This new upstream version brings a lot of new changes, from the former

this fixes some issues we know for g-i

this is really a _great_ news: this gives us a lot of more freedom.
I filed #356036 and #357431 against the package and they both should be
fixed; expecially the second bug is really important since it makes it
possible to display Kazakh text.

Given the wide range of glyphs available we might consider switching to
Dejavu as default font for G-I.

don't worry! I just select the longest lines of text from the po file
so that native speakers (i.e. you) have a better idea of how glyphs look
like.

It's difficult to give detailed feedback on the font, because the

nice: last time you pointed out it was almost unreadable because of
missing glyphs.
As for the fontsize we can increase it, so it would not be a problem.

Some of the accents are not positioned correctly when combined:
should I give that detailed feedback here, or should I do that to the
freefont authors? (It doesn't affect meaning, but it will have users

Perhaps you should file a bug for the freefont authors; consider the
following though:

1) I'd like to have the new freefont as default version of freefont
for g-i (we're still in the process of switching)

2) Christian is about to upload the new version of Dejavu fonts, and
we might use those to render Vietnamese

Our language is a challenge to font-creators, so the freefont people
have done well to get the glyphs represented readably.

I have screenshots of the Verajja font compared with Lucida Grande,

Verajja been integrated into Dejavu yet? I have tested the Verajja

I'll let you have a screenshot of Vietnamese text rendered with Dejavu
as soon as the package reaches the mirrors.

But, I'd suggest: I add pa and keep pa_IN for a week or two, then

Added you to the project..

I'm not convinced about partman-auto filling out /var/lib/partman with
the details about which devices to RAID together. Where would this sit
naturally given it (by definition really) affects more than one device?

Yeah, it might just set up the raid and then fill out /var/lib/partman
for the filesystems on top of the raid.

It could be written to /var/lib/partman/partman-auto-raid-recipes or
some such and that could be the trigger so you'd only preseed
partman-auto instead of all of it.

Would be good yeah..

Just give me a quick GO.

GO..:-)

All files are renamed. I'm just left with newt which is the only SVN
or CVS I don't have access to.

I've just changed all the references for the spellchecker; next run is scheduled
for tomorrow at 11:00 utc and if Dennis has renamed the files which go in the
tarball by then, everything should be fine.

Ciao,

Semantic HTML of devel/debian-installer/errata

2006-03-18 Thread Jutta Wrage

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi!

I am planning to change the errate page to make the list of known
problems a definition list instead of an unordered list. Semantical
it is a definitions list: term: error, definition: meaning of that
error.

Any objections?

greetings

Jutta

plip (and parport_pc) is a network module which needs parameters before
loading. I think it is not the only one.

But during last install for testing d-i, i made a mistake in parameters
= impossible to go back and succeed to display another time the module
parameters window a second time and modify them.

same in console 2 because there is no rmmod command

   * Remove most code that prompted for module parameters. The new model d-i
uses for module parameters is that the user should enter them on the
kernel command line at boot, using the form module.param=value. This
allows module parameters to be specified before udev loads modules during
 boot. Closes: #271065

render Vietnamese.

Thanks for the screenshot, Davide. I hope it doesn't show any
functional part of the installer, because it's all fragments of
strings, not complete strings. ;)

don't worry! I just select the longest lines of text from the po file
so that native speakers (i.e. you) have a better idea of how glyphs
look

like.

phew I was a bit worried, there. ;)

It's difficult to give detailed feedback on the font, because the
text in the screenshot is so small. I can say that the right accents
are on the right characters, so the text (when it makes sense ;) ) is
readable. That's the key thing. It seems to show all our glyphs.

nice: last time you pointed out it was almost unreadable because of
missing glyphs.

It is great progress. :)) Thankyou for all your work.

It would be a big loss of face for Debian if we weren't able to
support Vietnamese in this Installer: originally, I was told it would
be out in June 2005, so I passed that on to our community, and there
was great interest. Not being able to deliver then, damaged our
credibility. Not being able to deliver even now, would lose us our
remaining partisans.

As for the fontsize we can increase it, so it would not be a problem.

Great. I'd like to have a more detailed look at the font.

The user will be able to choose font-size for the installer, won't
they? If not, I suggest a slightly larger size than normal for
Vietnamese, because we have to distinguish all the accents, and some
of them do blend in to each other at smaller sizes.

Some of the accents are not positioned correctly when combined:
should I give that detailed feedback here, or should I do that to the
freefont authors? (It doesn't affect meaning, but it will have users
in my community thinking, Yuk, what's wrong with this font?)

Perhaps you should file a bug for the freefont authors;

I shall: I know they want to know these things.

consider the
following though:

1) I'd like to have the new freefont as default version of freefont
for g-i (we're still in the process of switching)

If we have no other choices, freefont would be fine for simply
getting the information across. However, if you want to look good the
users, it's better not to use a font that doesn't show the accents in
the correct positions. It'd be a bit like installing Debian in
English with all the dots from the is underneath them instead, and
the crosses on the ts up above the t, you wouldn't have a lot of
respect for that project, would you?

2) Christian is about to upload the new version of Dejavu fonts, and
we might use those to render Vietnamese

If they've integrated Verajja, the latest version (which has been
adjusted after my feedback on, unsurprisingly, accent position), that
would definitely be a better choice. I was following up Verajja-
Dejavu myself (didn't know about freefont), and have had time to get
that font thoroughly analyzed by several people.

Our language is a challenge to font-creators, so the freefont people
have done well to get the glyphs represented readably.

I have screenshots of the Verajja font compared with Lucida Grande,
the general-purpose Unicode font on my system, and a font created
especially for Vietnamese, if you would find those useful. Has
Verajja been integrated into Dejavu yet? I have tested the Verajja
font with Vietnamese, for its creator.

I'll let you have a screenshot of Vietnamese text rendered with Dejavu
as soon as the package reaches the mirrors.

Thanks, Davide. :)

Good luck with everything! These are exciting times. :))

Comments/Problems:
Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.

The install went perfectly (but I do miss full-screen ncurses-style menus).

I booted boot.img in expert mode, mounted root.img, loaded net-drivers.img for the SiS900, configured static IP, then downloaded the rest from a mirror without a problem.

I chose Standard System and Desktop/Workstation for software.

However, while the app software was installed to the correct partition (hda4), the OS was not installed, and grub did not add hda4 as a menu choice.

Background: I have 1 hardisk, hda, with 4 partitions:
hda1 ntfs for Windows, should I need to do something with that thing.
hda2 linux paging
hda3 reiserfs for my normal GNU/Debian boot device and root (been working fine with 'testing' for a long time)
hda4 an empty partition on which I was trying to install afresh the lastest GNU/Debian

Prior to this install, grub would offer hda1 (Windows) and hda3 (2.6.15) as boot choices from the MBR.

My goal was to keep hda1 and hda3 intact, and try a fresh install on hda4, with safe fallback to hda3 or even hda1 (ugh!).
After the install, I expected grub to offer hda1, hda3, and also hda4 (the new fresh install) as well.
But it offered only hda3, zapped hda1 (as a menu choice; I can still mount ntfs, so it's alive), and never added hda4, the new install.

After rebooting, the system booted up as usual on hda3 (with a different grub timeout), and I mounted hda4 to take a look-see.
All of the /usr/* stuff was installed as well as /etc and so on, but 'boot was empty, except for the grub subdir and its file, including menu.lst.

So it seems that something went wrong when the configure grub stage ran. The install process changed grub stuff on hda3 as well as creating the /boot/grub dir on hda4. Odd.

I performed the whole install twice because I thought that I might have chose the wrong menu number somewhere

I'm alays puzzled by people wanting to hide their mail address. Do you
really want to communicate? :-)

You don't explain us what you exactly did at the GRUB installation
step. Did you leave the default choices or did you something weird
like asking to install GRUB on hda4?

If you did the latter, then what you see is expectedthe
grub-installer did not touch the GRUB install on the MBR, which is
still the one you see booting. This GRUB points to /dev/hda3 as
root...which hasn't been touched by the installer and of course does
not offer hda4 as an option.

If you leave the *default* GRUB option to install on /dev/hda (ie the
MBR), then a new GRUB will be installed on the MBR and it will use
/dev/hda4 as rootand will offer the 3 choices, I guess.
