Creating custom CDs
Hi! I downloaded and used Debian Etch beta 3 release to compile my own system from scratch i a new partition of my hd. The hard disk is partitioned like that: hda1 swap hda2 / (Debian Etch beta 3 release) hda3 / (My own system) I would like to create an installation cd or a set of installation cds or a dvd for my own system. It was built entirely from sources and so I would like to ask if it is possible to use debian-installer to create a cd which includes the source packages plus patches and to build it from *.tar.gz , *.tar.bz2 etc... instead of using .deb packages following a specific build order and for example adding support for reiser4 file system. The idea was to unpack the source package in ram, apply the needed patches, running the configure script (plus the various options), make, make install and ldconfig normal way to compile packages so to install it directly to hd. miboot net-install floppies too big
Hi, I have a powerpc 6500/275 and am trying to install debian etch with the floppy images from ~wouter, or the beta3 from debian for that matter. Everything works fine until I insert the net-install.img. Through mail contact with piotras, after "erroneously" posting on the debootloaders-miboot list, i found out that all the recent net-install images are too big for a floppy. I also found the following post which makes reference to this fact: http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/09/msg00823.html Is anybody looking into this? The boot loader works otherwise up to the net-install part and it's a shame if the floppies won't work since the only other way is with a harddisk install which is a more complicated. truly, rob -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I couldn't reproduce the double free under valgrind and the X11 backend. I currently patch the source tree only one time, and I only have one source tree (I just got rid of the tar-in-tar orig.tar.gz), so I can't apply your patch to the directfb build only. Since your patch adds a mem leak, I don't want to include it right now. I'm willing to try to fix the underlying bug though, or else I will try to change the patch to only be effective when building the DFB flavor. I expect that we can determine in hw-detect if we are installing on an Intel Mac and only in that case anna-install that udeb. This would be royally in time for bootloader installation which AIUI is the first time the info is actually needed. pgpY3gIErQHeJ.pgp Description: PGP signature

Frans Pop wrote: Hi Attilio, With the new GTK 2.8 upload by Loïc [1] and the changes in keymap support, we now have only one RC problem remaining in G-I: the disappearing text on the current line in multi-select lists. I do not think that 2.10 will be in unstable in time for the RC1 release, so it would be great if this issue could be solved in the current 2.8 libs. Is there any way that you could backport the fix for this from 2.10? Yesterday i attempted a backport from HEAD dfb backend to 2.8.20, but i failed as many parts of code have changed since may and the backport is now much more complicated. In the case of an update to the old backport i still need to understand where to look to fix the missing lines bug. We test for [ -x $tool ] further down in crypto_check_required_tools(). I think we'd need to change the test to [ -e .. ] or test separately for libs. Somehow I feel we should find a better way to test for required libraries though. Perhaps changing the error reporting in anna-install so that we could tell if a dependency couldn't be loaded? cheers, Max

Quoting Jens Seidel ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): > Josip, did you noticed this? It's very well possible that existing languages > such as your one will be dropped ... No other Open Source project I know about > has such an ugly and user unfriendly policy. He certainly did notice this, as the mail I sent to -i18n was BCC'ed to him. Indeed the recent activity developed by Josip on Croatian translation is without any doubt the consequence of the mail I sent. Josip was listed as the backup translator for Croatian. He's unfortunately the backup of a ghostso, now, he is the official translation coordinator (and, indeed, the only translator so far) for a language whose chance to be de-activated are lower and lower each dayprecisely because of his hard work. Again, grep in hwdetect for examples. Adding a 'depmod -a' does fix the problem. Ok, I've fixed this in p-a-c. update-dev is not necessary since the crypto modules create no devices. Note that there is this issue too. As I've said earlier in this BR, anna-install will likely not return an error if not all dependencies can be met (my logs attached earlier confirm this), so this needs to be checked in a different way. The on-demand-loaded packages are (from your previous mail): - cdebconf-newt-entropy - crypto-modules-$kvers - cryptsetup-udeb - dmsetup-udeb - libpopt0-udeb - partman-crypto-dm cryptsetup and dmsetup are checked in crypto_check_required_tools partman-crypto-dm is the argument to anna-install and I'd assume that anna-install returns an error if the primary target is not downloaded correctly crypto-modules-$kvers is checked in crypto_load_modules crypto_load_modules and crypto_check_required_tools are called from crypto_prepare_method which is called from p-a-c and partman-crypto where appropriate This leaves libpopt0 and cdebconf-newt-entropy I've committed a preliminary test for the presence of those two libs to crypto_check_required_tools. Bug#389570: Incomplete patch to add dmraid support
Package: partman-base Version: 94 Severity: wishlist Hi! I have tried to improve dmraid support in d-i during the last few days. What has been done until now: * improve the dmraid package [1] to fix #374480 and #375413, * add dmraid support in disk-detect (see #338719). Attached is a patch that is a small improvement of partman-base support for dmraid. It only modify definitions.sh:humandev() to add support for "mirror" devmapper devices. Other needed changes in partman-base seems mostly related to device detection (in init.d/parted) where disks under dmraid should be filtered out of the listed devices. Other missing changes in the debian-installer are: * debian-installer-utils/list-devices (and maybe udevinfo) Detection for disks and partitions should be added + filtering of devices under dmraid. * grub-installer (and possibly lilo-installer). It is a frequently requested feature. The main blocker so far has been that it needs someone with the hardware to work on this. Proposal to remove gfxdrivers directory from libdirectfb udeb
Hi Yesterday i posted [1] on directfb-user to get help about crashes we experience with PPC machines, and Claudio Ciccani suggested to remove the gfxdrivers directory to disable device initialization by chip-specific modules. This not only should give us better reliability, but should also allow us to save ~500KB in the ISO. Would it be possible removing the gfxdrivers directory from the udeb and preserving it in the regular deb? The S/390 images do not include localechooser and thus language selection is missing. This results in the country selection in mirror-chooser showing the country codes instead of country names. Setting LANGUAGE to "en" solves this. In general, IMO the installer should ensure a good default language setting (C/English), even if localechooser is not run. Yesterday I tried a different implementation: setting debconf/language=en in debian-installer-startup.d instead of setting LANGUAGE. However, that did not result in country names being displayed for S/390. Suggestions for alternative solutions are very welcome. pgpG8xnO4T1kM.pgp Description: PGP signature

Adding a 'depmod -a' does fix the problem. Note that there is this issue too. As I've said earlier in this BR, anna-install will likely not return an error if not all dependencies can be met (my logs attached earlier confirm this), so this needs to be checked in a different way. pgpBWBlNFZXw7.pgp Description: PGP signature

If this was a sarge image, you maybe went into one of the various SATA support problem we had in sarge. In such case, you might need to test the development versions of Debian Installer which you'll find at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer signature.asc Description: Digital signature

See my mail to d-vote [1] for background. Actually, this patch is trivial, although the presentation hides that pretty well. There are 2 new lines of code and a lot of lines of code shuffled around. However, there's no point in applying it until there's actually something that usefully uses it. I don't actually understand how this patch could lay useful groundwork for anything, but I guess I'll try to keep an open mind on that score. > 3) This general approach has not been discussed on the debian-boot list >and thus will need review and consideration by the team before we can >consider applying patches. Yes, depmod definitely needs to be called after new modules are loaded. (AFAIK depmod -a should be enough.) Grep on depmod in hw-detect for examples. Also, if loading modules can result in new devices, update-dev (from di-utils) needs to be called. Again, grep in hwdetect for examples. pgpV9fp0XcIFN.pgp Description: PGP signature

As far as I known, there doesn't be difference. However I can picture a difference: Say, zlib1g is the last validate package and other task is started, but the screen isn't yet updated, that results in seeing validation of zlib1g taking a long time. Bug#381142: tasksel: Tasks names aren't translated
Frans Pop wrote: > I'm not quite sure if letting LANGUAGE overrule debconf/language is not a > bug in tasksel, but at least we have tasks translated now. tasksel uses standard gettext for translations of the tasks menu, since that menu is generated on the fly and so cannot be translated using debconf. So this problem actually affects anything else that d-i might happen to run in the chroot that uses gettext. Perhaps "depmod -ae" needs to be executed after the crypto-modules-$kvers module has been downloaded and unpacked? -- David Härdeman -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Important: some Debian Installer translations are in great danger
I'm happy to announce that this rather alarming message alerady had a few effects: > Croatian | 2005-04-03 | 1091t 256f 173u Translation deeply corrected and completed by Josip Rodin. It now needs more testing and keep the maintenance level and that will be perfect. Josip, do you want me to add your mail to the mini robot that warns translators when something changes in level 1 to 5 files? It's probably much better to keep a constant effort than having to do big rushes. Moreover, the new translations will then flow more smoothly in the various D-I components. > Hindi | 2005-10-29 | 713t 138f 669u Nishant Sharma promised to revive the l10n effort. It is mostly managed in the indlinux entrans server. It probably needs to be synchronized more often than now. Karunakar conducted some testing during the time he was in Extremadura or at the OOo conference. In short, these two languages now have more chances to be keptbut no promise is made yet..:-) signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I did, (Sven knows), it didn't work for me. I added by hand in the directfbrc file the option. Neither did "video=ofonly" At Sven's suggestion, I have ran the installer with disable-module=radeon in directfbrc.
