Creating custom CDs

2006-09-26 Thread Luca
Hi!

I downloaded and used Debian Etch beta 3 release to compile my own
system from scratch i a new partition of my hd. The hard disk is
partitioned like that:
hda1 swap
hda2 / (Debian Etch beta 3 release)
hda3 / (My own system)

I would like to create an installation cd or a set of installation cds
or a dvd for my own system.
It was built entirely from sources and so I would like to ask if it is
possible to use debian-installer to create a cd which includes the
source packages plus patches and to build it from *.tar.gz , *.tar.bz2
etc... instead of using .deb packages following a specific build order
and for example adding support for reiser4 file system.
The idea was to unpack the source package in ram, apply the needed
patches, running the configure script (plus the various options), make,
make install and ldconfig normal way to compile packages so to install
it directly to hd.

Thanks in advance,
Luca

accidentally sent email directly to developer - I apologize. here's the
copy for the bug archive:

not really, no. the installer didn't let me choose anything [packages].
it just downloaded everything it wanted from the repos [during
installation] and set it up (netinst) itself [except exim4]].

Calculation of the fastest mirror is very though.
( I don't dare to say it can't be done )

As far as I'm concerned, is the current approach the best one:

   Assume a smart user.

It also allows an user to learn and a local apt archive which won't be
in list of archives to be probe for the fastest, but _is_ the fastest.

The installer has the boot option "rescue" that can (re)install grub.

Bug#389456: p-a-c: Fails to configure encrypted volumes

This won't work, I think? We test for [ -x $tool ] further down
in crypto_check_required_tools(). I think we'd need to change the
test to [ -e .. ] or test separately for libs. Somehow I feel we
should find a better way to test for required libraries though.
Perhaps changing the error reporting in anna-install so that we
could tell if a dependency couldn't be loaded?

Oh, right...I've changed the test to [ -e ] for now and we can always do
this in a different way if/when anna-install allows for dependency
download error checking.

There is only an iso. Look for gtk-miniiso under powerpc/powerpc64:

So I went there and found

miboot net-install floppies too big

2006-09-26 Thread rob rob

Hi,
I have a powerpc 6500/275 and am trying to install debian etch with the
floppy images from ~wouter, or the beta3 from debian for that matter.
Everything works fine until I insert the net-install.img. Through mail
contact with piotras, after "erroneously" posting on the
debootloaders-miboot list, i found out that all the recent net-install
images are too big for a floppy. I also found the following post which
makes reference to this fact:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2006/09/msg00823.html
Is anybody looking into this?
The boot loader works otherwise up to the net-install part and it's a shame
if the floppies won't work since the only other way is with a harddisk
install which is a more complicated.

truly, rob

I couldn't reproduce the double free under valgrind and the X11
backend. I currently patch the source tree only one time, and I only
have one source tree (I just got rid of the tar-in-tar orig.tar.gz), so
I can't apply your patch to the directfb build only. Since your patch
adds a mem leak, I don't want to include it right now.

I'm willing to try to fix the underlying bug though, or else I will try
to change the patch to only be effective when building the DFB flavor.

I would suggest a separate udeb. I expect that we can determine in
hw-detect if we are installing on an Intel Mac and only in that case
anna-install that udeb. This would be royally in time for bootloader
installation which AIUI is the first time the info is actually needed.

Hi Attilio,

With the new GTK 2.8 upload by Loïc [1] and the changes in keymap support,
we now have only one RC problem remaining in G-I: the disappearing text

I do not think that 2.10 will be in unstable in time for the RC1 release,
so it would be great if this issue could be solved in the current 2.8
libs.

Is there any way that you could backport the fix for this from 2.10?

Yesterday i attempted a backport from HEAD dfb backend to 2.8.20, but i
failed as many parts of code have changed since may and the backport is
now much more complicated.
In the case of an update to the old backport i still need to understand
where to look to fix the missing lines bug.
Anyway, yesterday i eventually found the root of the "boom" bug [1]
(it's in GTK or GLib) and, while waiting for someone to fix it, the
below patch seems to workaround this issue in most cases.
Loic, do you feel to try building a patched GTK 2.10.4 udeb so that
frans can test if the "boom" bug is fixed?

Package: debian-installer
Version: no idea. Netinstall image was DL'ed on 22-Sep-2006

During the installation step "Select and install software", progress
ground to a halt. It said "running tasksel", the progress bar remained
at 1% for several minutes.

A motionless progress bar doesn't convey much information; there is no
hint as to what actually went wrong.

Even if I knew, there is no way to abort / go back at this point (short
of switching to another console and applyig some l33t linux skillz. Due
to insufficient knowledge of what I was doing, this only raised even
more issues).

So much for the actual complaint. Here's what I was doing:

According to ALT-F4, it was trying to download the popularity-contest
package at that time. After killing apt-get, the log said "Failed to
fetch
http://zwerg:/main/pool/main/p/popularity-contest/popularity-contest_1.34_all.deb
 Connection failed"

zwerg happens to be the local apt-proxy machine; a subsequent attempt to
retrieve that file from another box on the network was sucessful, so I
don't think it's he proxy's fault.

---snap---

Or maybe it was the proxy's fault, after all, because currently the
restarted installer is busy downloading stuff from ftp.de.debian.org --
but that's beside the point. I'm filing a bug report because I couldn't
abort the stalled installation and just go back to selecting another
mirror. I had to reboot the box and start over from scratch.

Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

I tried to install debian behind an apt-proxy and the installations
hangs when fetching packages during installation (Errormsg on ALT-F4).
See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=388769 .

It seems that all Debian etch installations behind a sarge apt-proxy
fail because of apt-proxy bug 374405:
> Incompatible with full URL HTTP requests from recent apt versions
> http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=374405

Upgrading the apt-proxy from sarge to backports.org solved the
installation-problem.

IMHO it would be nice to have a hint / warning about sarge apt-proxy
when manually selecting a mirror. Otherwise many people may stumble over
this incompatibility.

Bye,
Wolfgang

thanks for another fast response. unfortunately, it didn't come to me to
note the services, and I uninstalled all the services that I thought
might be related to the open ports. the ones I remember are

cupsys or lpd
samba
winbind
nfs
portmap

reason I suggested them to be closed is because I would imagine it is
easier to connect and exploit open ports of a freshly installed system.

not sure though.

second attempt worked :)

is there a way to not make it that way? the base installation succeeded,
so I think I had a working system minus grub. I am not sure at all, but
if the install CD had an option to "boot to existing install to recover"
I could have managed to finish the installation.

Again, I'm not sure if that could be done and I'm not sure if I'm asking
for too much :)

thanks again

cdebconf-newt-entropy is already taken care of through db_capb;
blockdev-keygen will return an error dialog if it needs but cannot

case $1 in
dm-crypt)
- tools="/bin/blockdev-keygen /sbin/dmsetup /sbin/cryptsetup"
+ tools="$tools /sbin/dmsetup /sbin/cryptsetup /lib/libpopt.so.0"

This won't work, I think? We test for [ -x $tool ] further down
in crypto_check_required_tools(). I think we'd need to change the
test to [ -e .. ] or test separately for libs. Somehow I feel we
should find a better way to test for required libraries though.
Perhaps changing the error reporting in anna-install so that we
could tell if a dependency couldn't be loaded?

cheers,

He certainly did notice this, as the mail I sent to -i18n was BCC'ed
to him. Indeed the recent activity developed by Josip on Croatian
translation is without any doubt the consequence of the mail I sent.

Josip was listed as the backup translator for Croatian. He's
unfortunately the backup of a ghostso, now, he is the official
translation coordinator (and, indeed, the only translator so far) for
a language whose chance to be de-activated are lower and lower each
dayprecisely because of his hard work.

This so-called unfriendly policy seems to have results after
all ;-)

Adding a 'depmod -a' does fix the problem.

Ok, I've fixed this in p-a-c. update-dev is not necessary since the
crypto modules create no devices.

Note that there is this issue too.
As I've said earlier in this BR, anna-install will likely not return an
error if not all dependencies can be met (my logs attached earlier
confirm this), so this needs to be checked in a different way.

The on-demand-loaded packages are (from your previous mail):

- cdebconf-newt-entropy
- crypto-modules-$kvers
- cryptsetup-udeb
- dmsetup-udeb
- libpopt0-udeb
- partman-crypto-dm

cryptsetup and dmsetup are checked in crypto_check_required_tools

partman-crypto-dm is the argument to anna-install and I'd assume that
anna-install returns an error if the primary target is not downloaded
correctly

crypto-modules-$kvers is checked in crypto_load_modules

crypto_load_modules and crypto_check_required_tools are called from
crypto_prepare_method which is called from p-a-c and partman-crypto
where appropriate

This leaves libpopt0 and cdebconf-newt-entropy

I've committed a preliminary test for the presence of those two libs to
crypto_check_required_tools.

(the above mentioned crypto_* methods are all in crypto_tools.sh from
partman-crypto)

I did, (Sven knows), it didn't work for me. I added by hand in the

At Sven's suggestion, I have ran the installer with
disable-module=radeon in directfbrc. This worked (well, only if the
linux_input module is deactivated, too).

what if you delete the ll /usr/lib/directfb-0.9.25/gfxdrivers/

A) disable linux_input in directfbrc
B) leave linux_input enabled in directfbrc

Bug#389570: Incomplete patch to add dmraid support

2006-09-26 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Package: partman-base
Version: 94
Severity: wishlist

Hi!

I have tried to improve dmraid support in d-i during the last few days.
What has been done until now:
  * improve the dmraid package [1] to fix #374480 and #375413,
  * add dmraid support in disk-detect (see #338719).

Attached is a patch that is a small improvement of partman-base support
for dmraid. It only modify definitions.sh:humandev() to add support for
"mirror" devmapper devices.

Other needed changes in partman-base seems mostly related to device
detection (in init.d/parted) where disks under dmraid should be
filtered out of the listed devices.

Other missing changes in the debian-installer are:
  * debian-installer-utils/list-devices (and maybe udevinfo)
Detection for disks and partitions should be added + filtering of
  devices under dmraid.
  * grub-installer (and possibly lilo-installer).

Thanks very much for your work on this. It is a frequently requested
feature. The main blocker so far has been that it needs someone with the
hardware to work on this.

I don't think we can apply this patch until the other pieces of the puzzle
become available as well, but it is great to have a start.

For others reading the list...
The dmraid-udeb package has been (or soon will be) improved to not require
selinux and will add a dependency on the kernel modules required to
activate dmraid devices.

Cheers,

Proposal to remove gfxdrivers directory from libdirectfb udeb

2006-09-26 Thread Attilio Fiandrotti

Hi

Yesterday i posted [1] on directfb-user to get help about crashes we
experience with PPC machines, and Claudio Ciccani suggested to remove
the gfxdrivers directory to disable device initialization by
chip-specific modules.
This not only should give us better reliability, but should also allow
us to save ~500KB in the ISO.
Would it be possible removing the gfxdrivers directory from the udeb and
preserving it in the regular deb?

Hi!

Attached is a patch modifying disk-detect to enable dmraid devices
detection.

This patch does not enable full support for dmraid devices in the whole
debian-installer. Other identified aspects needing work are:
 - debian-installer-utils/list-devices and mabye udevinfo
 for disk and partition detections ;
also need to hide disks involved in dmraid array
 - partman-base/definitions.sh
 humandev device name translation
 - partman-base/init.d/parted
 device detection and filtering
 - grub-installer, maybe lilo-installer
for grub, should be somehting like [1]:
   device (hd0,x) /dev/mapper/x+1
   device (hd0) /dev/mapper/
   root (hd0,x)
   setup (hd0)

Bug#381142: tasksel: Tasks names aren't translated

I'm still confused why the rest of tasksel _is_ translated correctly and
only the tasks are affected.

The problem this solves is the following. The S/390 images do not include
localechooser and thus language selection is missing. This results in the
country selection in mirror-chooser showing the country codes instead of
country names. Setting LANGUAGE to "en" solves this.

In general, IMO the installer should ensure a good default language
setting (C/English), even if localechooser is not run.

Yesterday I tried a different implementation: setting debconf/language=en
in debian-installer-startup.d instead of setting LANGUAGE. However, that
did not result in country names being displayed for S/390.

Suggestions for alternative solutions are very welcome.

Current versions of d-i are using 2.6.17 and .18 is work in progress.
( Debian-Installer version Beta 3 has a 2.6.16 kernel )

I don't known about the loading sequence, but do known that that
question/request is more appropriate at the kernel mailinglist.

Adding a 'depmod -a' does fix the problem.

Note that there is this issue too.
As I've said earlier in this BR, anna-install will likely not return an
error if not all dependencies can be met (my logs attached earlier
confirm this), so this needs to be checked in a different way.

Do you have more details about the way you got this one ? We don't

dvelopment versions of Debian Installer.

If this was a sarge image, you maybe went into one of the various SATA
support problem we had in sarge. In such case, you might need to test
the development versions of Debian Installer which you'll find at

Actually, this patch is trivial, although the presentation hides that
pretty well. There are 2 new lines of code and a lot of lines of code
shuffled around.

However, there's no point in applying it until there's actually
something that usefully uses it. I don't actually understand how
this patch could lay useful groundwork for anything, but I guess I'll
try to keep an open mind on that score.

You can say that again. Design first, then code?

Yes, depmod definitely needs to be called after new modules are loaded.
(AFAIK depmod -a should be enough.)
Grep on depmod in hw-detect for examples.

Also, if loading modules can result in new devices, update-dev (from
di-utils) needs to be called.
Again, grep in hwdetect for examples.

Your obsevervation is correct.
Emulation does take CPU power.

I never noticed a difference between zlib1g and other packages.
As far as I known, there doesn't be difference.
However I can picture a difference:
Say, zlib1g is the last validate package and other task is started,
but the screen isn't yet updated, that results in seeing validation of
 zlib1g taking a long time.
That would mean that an extra print to screen is needed (But I don't known
if it actual is ... )

Providing the user with information 'what is going on', is a good thing.
It is done at many places in the Debian Installer. Providing the user
with detailed information about what is going is less good. I you do
want the detailed progress information, then switch to virtual console
number four by pressing 'ALT-F4' ( switch back with 'ALT-F1' )

And which algoritme for calculation of the fastest mirror do you suggest?

Please do another install attempt. And give the installer time to
complete. I propose that you start the installation before lunch
and see after lunch if there is "Configuring apt 61%".
See also what is actual happing at vt4.

Infact I don't doubt the installer. I think it is just impatience at
your side. And I think we all wanna known what is going on ...

So please provide more information.

Yes, that is the consequence of the reboot before finnished install.

Frans Pop wrote:

tasksel uses standard gettext for translations of the tasks menu, since
that menu is generated on the fly and so cannot be translated using
debconf.

So this problem actually affects anything else that d-i might happen to
run in the chroot that uses gettext. Which suggests to me that this
LANGUAGE setting is bogus and wrong at root.

Hello,

Both arcboot-installer and yaboot-installer templates make reference to
"the next stage of the installation". As Debian Installer does no longer
have a second stage, that should be rephrased.

Hmmm...random idea of the day (which I can't test right now):

Using a crypto means that device-mapper calls crypto_alloc_tfm -->
crypto_alg_mod_lookup --> try_then_request_module --> request_module,
which does a modprobe of a module with the same name as the crypto.

Perhaps "depmod -ae" needs to be executed after the crypto-modules-$kvers
module has been downloaded and unpacked?

Translation deeply corrected and completed by Josip Rodin. It now
needs more testing and keep the maintenance level and that will be
perfect.

Josip, do you want me to add your mail to the mini robot that warns
translators when something changes in level 1 to 5 files? It's
probably much better to keep a constant effort than having to do big
rushes. Moreover, the new translations will then flow more smoothly in
the various D-I components.

Nishant Sharma promised to revive the l10n effort. It is mostly
managed in the indlinux entrans server. It probably needs to be
synchronized more often than now.

Karunakar conducted some testing during the time he was in Extremadura
or at the OOo conference.

In short, these two languages now have more chances to be keptbut
no promise is made yet..:-)

I did, (Sven knows), it didn't work for me. I added by hand in the
directfbrc file the option. Neither did "video=ofonly"

At Sven's suggestion, I have ran the installer with
disable-module=radeon in directfbrc. This worked (well, only if the
linux_input module is deactivated, too).
