Bug#394744: Package: installation-reports
2006/10/22, Frans Pop <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: I'm going to have to close this installation report as a "successful install" because AFAICT the installer did everything right. If a device is not supported in the kernel, there is very little we can do. Sure. My intention was to announce a "success so far as you can do". The additional hint I wanted to give is that there should be some easily detectable information for newbies if something like that happens. I would think the following would be helpful (for instance in the case of a not detected NIC): Your computer contains a network card `output of lspci | grep Ethernet` This is card seems not to be supported by the current installation kernel of Debian GNU/Linux. (Don't know whether this is a reasonable guess because there might be other types of failure.) You might try to ask your favourite Search Engine to browse the internet for "Debian Linux `string from above`" or ask debian-user for further help. The problem is that I wanted to demonstrate a newbie how easy it is to install Debian on his fresh box, but failed and there was no clue given what to do next. I do not want to blame the installer for failing where it has no chance to success but we could try to give at least some information how to proceed now. I admit I have not read the installation manual and perhaps some information is given there. But even then my suggestion above should be turned into: Please read installation manual topic "Trouble shooting (or whatever)". Kind regards Andreas. -- http://fam-tille.de -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The ppc64 patches for the 'debian-installer', 'linux-kernel-di-powerpc-2.6', 'base-installer' and 'partman-base' packages were not filed to the BTS because I waited for the release of Beta 3. The revised ppc64 patch for 'debian-installer' which should apply to the current SVN is attached below. This patch adds 'ppc64' to the Build-Depends in debian/control where necessary and it creates the ppc64 related files in the build/config and build/pkg-lists directories. The remaining ppc64 patches for the other d-i packages will follow soon. Thank you again for your help with the integration of the ppc64 port! I tried copying the image boot.img from my current Debian box using the command "dd ..." as specified on to four different floppies. I tried .../floppy and .../floppy-2.4 and put the floppy in the system and as soon as it booted up, it spit the disk out of the system. The screen showed a floppy disk with an x in it. I cleaned the floppy disk out good with compressed air, and used rubbing alcohol on a q-tip on the heads and no improvement. It might be a bad floppy drive I guess, but I have no way to test it as I have only one macintosh floppy drive. Is there any way to take the hard drive out of the system, install some files somewhere else and then try booting Debian? I also admit I have no SCSI card, and no hard drive with any MAC OS on it to setup files like this on it. For example First I zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sda (as from documentaion in the manual) the image is in the built "superfloppy" 256MB size format. Then I copied a debian.iso to the stick. It works fine with a 256MB and 1GB stick but with a corsair 2GB it wont work. The reason is that iso-scan errors out. When tracing backwards I found in iso-scan.postinst At the line DEVS="$(list-devices disk; list-devices partition)" the reason it misses the 2GB stick (which is at /sys/block/sda) is that udev thinks its a floppy. udevinfo -q env -p /block/sda gives ID_TYPE=floppy and udevinfo -q name -p /block/sda gives the name in devfs format, but its a disk (dont remember exactly). So it misses a disk because of the ID_TYPE, I added list-devices floppy in the line above and that makes it work. But maybe the udev (d-i) should detect it as a disk ? regards Peter -- bitrunner 0708-460260 Andra Långgatan 28 41327 Göteborg Sweden --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Version: 1.17 On Monday 23 October 2006 00:30, Peter Skogström wrote: > Comments/Problems: > At the line > > DEVS="$(list-devices disk; list-devices partition)" > > the reason it misses the 2GB stick (which is at /sys/block/sda) is that > udev thinks its a floppy. > > udevinfo -q env -p /block/sda gives ID_TYPE=floppy > and udevinfo -q name -p /block/sda g

A lot of stuff can be done from the installer and that's really great. Thanks for all. But I've been puzzled when I tried to setup an encrypted filesystem. When I chose to setup an encrypted filesystem, i was told it was not allowed to do it with a clear swap space. But creating an encrypted swap space requires to do all the stuff manually... Probably the installer should make it easier and propose to switch the swap to an encrypted swap instead. Sorry if the report lacks details, I did that several hours ago and don't remember the details. And I can't try the installer again right now to check. But maybe the udev (d-i) should detect it as a disk ? regards Peter -- bitrunner 0708-460260 Andra Långgatan 28 41327 Göteborg Sweden

It is _our_ job to read installation reports, even long ones, and respond, clone, or in general process as necessary. The only case where we can realistically ask users to do this job for us is when they have intimate knowledge of Debian, D-I and the BTS (as in the case of d-i team members and DDs). We can sometimes ask specifically to report one or more issues separately if they are completely unrelated to the installer, but we cannot totally dismiss an installation report as is done here. It was a little confusing that after I was asked to enter the passphrases for sda2, sda3 and sda6, there was no apparent way to "connect" which of those partitions corresponded to which of the encrypted volumes in the main partman menu. This might be related to the german language setting: The mountpoint column showed part of the string "Verschlüsseltes Volume (%s)" (translation for: "Encrypted volume (%s)"), but the string was cut in the middle of "Volume" IIRC, so that the part that includes the name of the actual encrypted device was not visible. Problems: 2. For the encrypted device crypt1 on /dev/sda3 I entered a passphrase that included two umlauts. The first odd thing was that the asterisk usually shown in the passphrase entry field was shown differently: The asterisk appeared, but the cursor was not advanced to the next character. I continued through the installation, but found that entering the same passphrase during boot did not work. I tried unsetting LANG, calling unicode_start/_stop before running /etc/init.d/cryptdisks start once the system had booted, but none of those c

Re: Debian Installer - Call for testing *this week*
Hi, I finally probe the new installer GUI amd64 and it work great... I probe the installation also in spanish and there is acouple of messages still in english.. . 1 in the partition assistant the description message... when download the packages to install 2 I could read retrieving... 3 in the time zone configuration I robed Mexico and if in english say... Mountain, Central, Pacific and in spanish say something similar... tzconfig have other labels i suppose should be the same... This is not the usual GREAT WORK On 10/17/06, Frans Pop <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: (Please reply to the debian-boot list.) Preparations for Release Candidate 1 of the installer have now really started. All important functional changes are now included in the daily images. In order improve the quality of the release and reduce the number of nasty surprises afterwards, it would be great if we could get some help testing the installer during *this week*. Please make sure you use one of the _daily built_ images available from: http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ or http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/ and file an installation report with your findings: http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch05s03.html#submit-bug See this wiki page for a general overview of the planned release, including known issues: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/EtchRC1Prep Testing the installer for your favorite architecture(s) === This is the main focus for this call for testing. Please let us know if there are any important issues, especially regressions from previous releases. If you can, try different installation methods. Note that the installer still uses 2.6.17. Main reason is that 2.6.18 is not yet ready to migrate to testing and switching to 2.6.18 would therefore block RC1 of d-i. Depending on the kernel team and RMs, we may still switch to 2.6.18 before RC1, but switching immediately afterwards looks more likely. Other things to test There is a number of other things that could be tested, mostly new functionality that was added recently: - graphical installer, especially whether your mouse and touchpad work correctly - crypto support in partman: the installer now has crypto support both for guided [1] and manual [2] partitioning; thorough tests, including of the actual security of the installed system, very, very welcome - automatic raid partitioning (preseeded only [1]) - 2.6 based installation floppies for i386 - support for non-standard filesystems (i.e. anything other than ext3) - if you speak a language other than English, consider installing in that language; note that one last round of translation updates is still planned, but reports of issues are still appreciated TIA, Frans Pop [1]http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch06s03.html#di-partition [2]http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch06s03.html#partman-crypto [3]http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/apbs04.html#preseed-partman-raid -- Engañarse por amor es el engaño más terrible; es una pérdida eterna para la que no hay compensación ni en el tiempo ni en la eternidad. Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: partman-crypto Version: 15 Severity: minor Currently the same string is used for both listing encrypted partitions as devices and as a short description after the encrypted partition itself. For the short description the current string is too long which leads to it being cut off as can be seen in: http://people.debian.org/~fjp/d-i/partman-crypto_cut-string.png on the line for "SCSI1 (0,0,0); #5". It would be good to use a separate string for the short description, maybe just "crypto", just like is done for swap. You can have a look at the screenshots here: http://syslinux.zytor.com/screenshots.php There is still the old menu we all know, and two additional modes: * Graphical (looks like grub and supports a splash-image) * Extended (looks like a DOS-program, has many configurable and selectable options regarding to boot parameters) I noticed that the current debian cds are not pulling syslinux out of the archive. Are there any undertakings to let debiancd pulling newer syslinux, and, is there any objections about using one of the new menu modes? Regards, Daniel I just discover that http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso is still using ISOLINUX 2.04 2003-04-16. Any good technical reason why you didn't migrate to the 3.x branch ?? @+, Fab -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Could you check if there are any (relevant) differences between the kernel configurations used by Fedora and Debian? If you find any, could you try compiling a custom Debian kernel to see if that indeed fixes things? If not, then it looks as if Fedora has a patch that is not yet in the upstream kernel (or at least not in 2.6.18) and that Debian therefore misses. Could you try to find that in their changelog or maybe by diff'ing the kernel sources? Could you also try the new 2.6.18 that was uploaded yesterday? AFAIK is the package module-assistant made for such things. This is it's (long) description: Description: tool to make module package creation easier The module-assistant tool helps users and maintainers with managing external kernel modules packaged for Debian. It can do: . - automated preparation of build environment for modules compilation (eg. automatical detection and installation of required kernel source/headers) - automated module source downloads - configuring and keeping track of external and localy built modules packages - semi-automated multiple builds for multiple kernel versions . It also contains some framework to be used by the build-scripts in the accompanying modules-source packages in Debian. HtH GSt [1] Ask it in the computer shop or in the next computer shop. Hi, Thank you very much for your comments. Looks like there are indeed some bugs. However, it is very hard to follow up on the issues you mention based on a regular mail. Could you please file a full installation report [1], so we can use our bug tracking system to assign the different issues to the proper packages. Testing d-i and maybe a bug in preseed
Hi I have done some testing with preseeding with the latest d-i. Netboot works fine. Usbsticks, trouble with getting the preseed file from the sticks and some other strange behaviours. 1. With the kernel commandline file=/hd-media/preseed2.cfg When getting the preseedfile I get this error "Failed to retrieve the preconfiguration file" file://floppy:///hd-media/preseed2.cfg I think the errormessage is a little bit stange, seems somehow that the floppy part doesnt belong... I have looked at the code and succesfully used preseed_fetch from a shell like preseed_fetch file:///hd-media/preseed2.cfg /foo (made /foo for testing) and that works fine. Anyhow I made numerous different setups and just cant get it to work, but possible I missed something or its a bug. 2. Also I found that when using the hd-media usb bootimage theres trouble with som usbsticks. Shall I file a bug against some package ? 3. Once and a while the iso-scan doesnt work, but always when doing it again (from the menu) it succesfully finds the iso. (Different sticks), seems like some function is too quick maybe ? regards //Peter -- bitrunner 0708-460260 Andra Långgatan 28 41327 Göteborg Sweden -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Yes, but that should work anyway...:) Indeed, looking at last console-data build, this is a bug in console-data build system. It uses /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED but the package doesn't Build-Depend on locales which provides it. And, "unfortunately", the last build of console-data has been made with pbuilder which makes this bug appear, while earlier versions were built on a live system with locales signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I'd like to make one other change to partman-crypto before you upload the new version and that is to make it ask the passphrase question in one "db_go". Bug#394700: syslinux failed to boot on external USB (epia 800 board)
Package: installation-reports severity: normal [cc-ing [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello all, I just gave a go at the last version of debian-installer (etch) on an epia 800 box and the cdrom failed to boot through an external USB cdrom player. The media used is the netinst iso has been grabed at http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd. This iso is dated : 20061021. As I was pretty sure to have booted some linuxcdrom on this box in the past, I played a bit with my stack of cds and here are my finding : Any cd using a version of isolinux anterior to 2.00 is booting (ZoneCD-1.2-7 which is using isolinux 2.0.0: 2002-10-25, is the last booting cdrom I have). debian-sarge cdrom is not booting (ISOLINUX 2.04 2003-04-16) and neither does any cdrom using a version of syslinux > 2.04 (incuded the 3.x branch). @+, Fab -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". This is expected, or could be a bug, depending on whether I understood your description correctly. :-) partman creates what looks like a single partition inside the encrypted device. This is really a "virtual" partition though, because it is not possible to create partitions on a dm-crypt or loop-AES encrypted device (it can be done with LVM). If one deletes that partition and creates a smaller one in it's place, partman should show the remaining space as "unusable" like in this screenshot: http://nusquama.org/~max/scratch/unusable.png Does this match what you saw? If not, could you describe in more detail what the screen looked like? Thanks. cheers, Max -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? So the actual gain is exactly zero. Yes, this is also what I experienced in german locale. I meant "at least a chance to associate" in that works at least for languages where the translation is not as long as for dutch or german, whereas replacing it with "crypto" would make it impossible in any case. > If you want to make sure some mapping info is visible, then we > should make sure the string is short enough so that it actually > _will_ be useful. For example by _only_ listing "sda5_crypt", > without the "Encrypted volume" bit. Using just the device name as you described seems very practical and I think actually solves this problem. The device name is mentioned in the humandev string of the encrypted device, so it can be asso- ciated easily. I'm currently testing a patch like the attached which puts string like "loop0" or "sda5_crypt" in the last column. Will followup once I've confirmed that it works. cheers, Max Index: update.d/crypto_visuals === --- update.d/crypto_visuals (Revision 41879) +++ update.d/crypto_visuals (Arbeitskopie) @@ -20,12 +20,29 @@ [ -f $id/method ] || exit 0 method=$(cat $id/method) +cryptdev_shortname () +{ + case "$1" in + /dev/loop*) + n=${1#/dev/loop} + n=${n#/} + echo "loop${n}" + ;; + /dev/mapper/*) + echo "${1#/dev/mapper}" + ;; + *) + echo "$1" + ;; + esac +} + if [ $method = crypto ]; then db_metaget partman/method_short/$method description || RET='' echo ${RET:-crypto} >$id/visual_filesystem if [ -f $id/crypt_active ]; then - RET=$(humandev $(cat $id/crypt_active)) + RET=$(cryptdev_shortname $(cat $id/crypt_active)) else db_metaget partman-crypto/text/not_active description || RET='' fi
Bug#393795: installation-report: PowerMac G4
The other problem was the configuration of xserver-xorg (I agreed to install Desktop task). It kept asking and asking the sam question of what video modes I would like to use, from 640x40 to 1900x Whatever I chose (all/nothing/different sensible subsets in lower resolutions) it asked the same question again, and choosing the back button also asked it again. The only way was to kill it from another terminal. Second time it could configure itself fine. I've seen this mentioned before. IMO it is an important issue. Could you please check if this is resolved or still present in the version of X currently in unstable? This should be possible by installing in Installed etch without desktop task, upgraded to unstable & 2.6.18-1-powerpc by hand. Ran tasksel, selected desktop, xserver-xorg asked the resolution question only once and then worked fine. So this too seems to be fixed in unstable. -- Meelis Roos ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You should be able to select this keymap by booting the installer in expert mode and selecting "AT keymaps" after selecting the keyboard configuration menu option. However, what really seems to be needed is a usb-mac keyboard variant that matches the modern layout. Apparently no one has ever defined one. Reassigning this report to console-data. Bug#393795: installation-report: PowerMac G4
The first is that hwclock could not be accessed with any known method (error -22) and so the year was in the beginning on 19xx. This caused secondary errors later. That sounds like a kernel issue again. Would you agree with that? In 2.6.18-1-powerpc this is issue is not present and everything is OK. -- Meelis Roos ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? The only problem is that in the screenshot I gave as example, _all_ the really usefull info is cut off. So the actual gain is exactly zero. I don't feel your reasoning is valid. If you want to make sure some mapping info is visible, then we should make sure the string is short enough so that it actually _will_ be useful. For example by _only_ listing "sda5_crypt", without the "Encrypted volume" bit. pgpGANDkuGfBz.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#393795: installation-report: PowerMac G4
Could you please check if this is resolved or still present in the version of X currently in unstable? This should be possible by installing in expert mode using a businesscard image and selecting "unstable" during mirror selection. Finally found some time for installation testing again. Downloaded 20061022 daily powerpc businesscard iso and selected unstable. It failed to install the kernel. Handcopied from tty4: Setting up linux-image-2.6.18-1-powerpc (2.6.18-3) ... [...] Using mkinitramfs-kpkg to build the ramdisk. Missing Required parameter 'Old' at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.18-1-powerpc.postinst line 393. dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.18-1-powerpc (--configure): subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2 Some debugging: this error comes from spath subrouteing that is given an empty string as the 'Old' parameter. Further investigation shows that the error comes from the last pair of spath invocations before the declaration of sub handle_non_symlinks (7th and 8th invocation of spath - I do not know the line numbers since I have inserted numerous debug statements). 7th invocation of spath gets Old=New="/boot/" and returns an empty string that is assinged to $Old and this is given to the 8th spath and spath errors out. So it's ! $no_symlink && $do_symlink =~ /Yes/i && ! $reverse_symlink. $realimageloc = "/boot/", $image_dest = "/boot/". It's in handle_missing_link, kimage="initrd.img", image_dest="/boot/", image_name="initrd.img-2.6.18-1-powerpc", src_dir="/boot", and image_magic has the same variables. So nothing seems wrong, spath 8 is just for this special case. Maybe spath should not complain? I commented out the die clauses in spath and it seemed to set up the symlinks well in /boot. Well, I could not catch the moment when linux-image has been unpacked but not yet configured to stop apt and fix the script and continue apt so I could not complete the install today. Is there a way to tell main-menu that I have completed a step and it can continue liks it did complete it? -- Meelis Roos ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#393786: [sparc] CD-ROM support broken in esp driver
The try with serial console did detect both SCSI devices fine but failed to mount CD. Digging around showed that iso 9660 filesystem was not available in /proc/filesystems and could not be modprobed either. The isofs module should be available in the initrd. Is it not? No. It is only present for sparc64 but missing for sparc32 (again with 17. This can be done *after* the install: dpkg-reconfigure console-data And we will not do what you suggest as this would lead to a very confusing list of dozens of keymaps. For sure, the console-keymaps-usb lists "mac-usb-it" as defatul keymap for Italian, so I guess that this explains what you see. What I'm unsure of is: are *default* Italian keyboard for PPC machines QWERTY ones ? Or do *you* happen to use a QWERTY keyboard, that is an US keyboard ? Bug#394615: graphical installer fail on intel i810 chipset
Package: installation-reports severity: normal Hello, First round on testing hetch installer... And kudos to the d-i team. The graphical installer is really nice. The media used is the netinst iso has been grabed at http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd. This iso is dated : 20061021. I tested a bunch of Dell Optiplex boxen and things went fluently (french install, text and graphical d-i, mix of usb & ps2 keyboard/mouse) I had a failling on one of the box I tested, though. D-I-classic (text) works find but d-i-graphical doesn't work. The box is a Dell Optiplex GX110. $ lspci | grep -i vga 00:01.1 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82810E DC-133 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 03) After the kernel boot, the swap to directfb failed with the following cyclingly spit on he screen : (*) DirectFB/Config: Parsing config file '/etc/directfbrc'. Re: [Pkg-kbd-devel] Why console-setup is not migrating to testing

However regardless of whether I will be able to participate actively in the d-i development or not, I'd prefer to see other developers willing to participate in the maintenance of the udebs before they are used by d-i by default. This shouldn't be a difficult task because in these udebs there are no more than 10 program lines that do not exist in the regular packages console-setup or console-setup-mini. On the other hand for currently unsupported languages it would be nice to use console-setup even for etch. The required changes in localechooser are extremely simple. If the locale is unsupported on the console then: 1. install console-setup 2. unset the debconf value of debian-installer/keymap (otherwise the question for the keyboard layout will be asked only with medium priority). Instead of unsetting debian-installer/keymap you can implement some other way to tell console-setup that the question has to be asked with higher priority.
