console-data 2:1.06-2: Please update debconf PO translation for the package console-data

2008-03-18 Thread Christian Perrier
Hi,

You are noted as the last translator of the debconf translation for
console-data. The English template has been changed, and now some messages
are marked \"fuzzy\" in your translation or are missing.
I would be grateful if you could take the time and update it.
Please send the updated file as a wishlist bug
against console-data.

For nearly all of you, the change is an extra string "ca-multi". You MUST
translate this to the equivalent of "Canadian multilingual" in your
language. The relevant keymap is a keymap that's normalized in Canada and
allows writing in English, French, Spanish, etcwhile keeping as much as
possible of the traditional "US" QWERTY keymap.

Thanks,

Thank you. I have added the translation, but had to copy and paste it and
make some minor changes (mainly joining the translated lines into a single
line).

Could you please check that the committed result is correct?
It can be seen at:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/d-i/trunk/packages/localechooser/debian/localechooser.templates-zh_CN?op=file&rev=51985&sc=1

Or, if you have a checkout of the D-I SVN repository, you can just do
an 'svn up' and check the file itself:
packages/localechooser/debian/localechooser.templates-zh_CN

Cheers,

I'm also interessted to push any other udeb-generating package that sits
in unstable now. Looking at the RC graph, we're having more and more
packages waiting for transition since some time, and we need to resolve
that soon.

Any reason to not unblock:

This is not, as far as I know, used by d-i. It generates a udeb at the
request of Ubuntu, IIRC. If it makes these transitions easier, I can
drop it or try to remember to mention it more often.

You intend to force those packages to go to testing? Many of them are

Don't unblock that one, please. 1.06 introduced a new keymap but
inadvertently removed the 'cf' keymap which could be a problem for
French-speaking canadian users. It also needs a big translation update
round.

This is the only change in 1.06 so 1.05 is OK for D-I lenny beta2.

Basically:

Until we update to newer kernel, we can't be sure it has been fixed

May i be so bold as to suggest it?

It seems that the problem is somewhere in the kernel and there is no
known fix for it.

IMO that should not be a problem. Depending on the size of the size of the
module we may not be able to add it to floppy images for example, but CD
images and possibly netboot should not be a problem.

The module will first need to be included in the regular Debian kernel image

It seems to be a problem with the kernel, not the installer, though
it was initially raised as part of an installer bug report.

You'll need to discuss that with the kernel team. From an installer PoV life
would be slightly easier if it were included in the regular kernel images.
And if it is part of the upstream kernel source, I personally see no reason
why it should not be.

It is 80KB for the core + ~8KB per driver (there are 15), so about 200KB.

Not having it on a floppy image may not so much be a problem if it is on
the regular USB/CD images.

Bug#471323: support powers of 1024 when parsing user input (kiB, MiB, ...)

2008-03-18 Thread Frans Pop
tags 471323 - patch
thanks

On Monday 17 March 2008, Robert Millan wrote:
> This patch allows partman to accept kiB / MiB / etc suffixes that
> represent powers of 1024.

The problem ATM is that some dialogs already take input in *iB without
making it explicit. A related problem is probably that some utilities
expect different units than others.

Note that multiplying by 1024 is completely wrong if an underlying utility
already expects its input to be in *iB!

I personally also find the usage of *iB confusing. IMO we'd need to
carefully explain what the units actually are.

Before a patch like this could even be considered, we'd have to
- check what type of units each utility expects
- decide how we want to communicate with users: in the units used by the
underlying utilities, or in standardized units; the first would have
the advantage that input matches manual setup and output in the syslog
- check what's needed to correctly display defaults
- and only _then_ make changes in the code

Because of these issues, I'm removing the patch tag.

I've attached the screenshot with the label.I think it was included in the first

I think this is the only explanation that makes sense. On all other
partitions I've
used labels, but on all of them I used single words, no spaces, just low-case
letters: home, opt, familie, filme, muzica, torenti, tmp, usr, var.

Then use dmidecode, or check /proc, or whatever.

The point is that tasks should avoid installing hardware-specific packages
as much as possible and delegate that to something that can detect that
they are actually needed. IIUC discover is intended to fill that gap.

Hmm, yes could be. I don't remember seeing that in your screenshot.
Either the space or the "/" could be the problem. I suspect the space as we
don't quote the parameter.
Maybe we need to either quote the label or add some input checks.

Could you check if any of these commands produce the same (or other) errors:
- mkfs.reiserfs -l Debian GNU/Linux -f -q /dev/sdaX
- mkfs.reiserfs -l "Debian GNU/Linux" -f -q /dev/sdaX

Great. If the first command above reproduces the error, a full install would
not be needed.

Bug#471505: fb=false required on HP Compaq 2510p notebook

2008-03-18 Thread Martin Michlmayr
Package: installation-reports

I tested etch r0 and lenny beta1 on a HP Compaq 2510p notebook.

With etch, I saw the following issues:

 - Nothing shows up when you boot the installer. fb=false is required
 - netcfg shows the firewire device as eth0 and for the real Ethernet
device it only shows "eth1: Intel Corporation Unknown device 1049"
(The device itself works, so it's only the description that's
   missing.)

With lenny:

 - fb=false is still required. Any idea why this might be and who
   to talk to about this?
 - firewire support is currently not included, so there's only one
network device. I plugged in an USB Ethernet dongle because I
wanted to make sure the "Intel Corporation Unknown device" message
is gone. However, I found that the amd64 PXE image does not include
   nic-usb-modules. That's kinda strange. Anyway, I downloaded
the default udebs with the built-in Ethernet and then ran netcfg
again, and a proper description for my Intel card is now shown.

So the remaining issues are:

 - fb=false required.
 - nic-usb-modules not on the PXE netboot image.
