Re: Proposal: move win32-loader in SVN repository
(I follow up in the original proposal instead of the following thread, which I read, though) Quoting Frans Pop ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): win32-loader was included in the repository in packages/arch/i386, but IMO that is not correct. Reason I feel it is not correct is that, although it is definitely related to D-I, it is not a D-I component (does not produce udebs). I thought that the location was chosen so that translating it could be integrated, and I thought that was already the case. Yesterday I learned that this is not so. Frankly, I don't really remember whether the package was put there with the idea of integrating it in the translation infrastructure or not. I don't really think so because just like you: I also personally feel that translation of win32-loader should not be integrated in the level 1 infrastructure _because_ it isn't a D-I component. This is also my feeling. I agree that we had a brief exchange, Robert and I, two days ago, about possibly integrating it in master files (after all, it could go in one of the sublevels...). But, thinking deeper, this is not really a good idea, for the reasons you mentioned. I therefore propose to move win32-loader (and any tags) from its current location to directly under trunk, as is suitable for a basically independent package. This would also make it more clear that translations need to be committed separately and makes it easier for translators to do a separate checkout of just win32-loader if they like. For translation statistics win32-loader could be included in level2, together with other packages that are important for installations. Actually, when the package was introduced, I *briefly* added it as part of level 2. However, there's a problem: some languages are not supported in NSIS. So, as the comments in the win32-loader say: one has first to translate NSIS before working on win3é-loader. As NSIS is something we don't have control over, I thought it would be unfair for translators of those languages to include the language in level 2 while they practically *can't* really translate for their language. For this reason, adding win32-loader to level 2, which we try to get complete when we release, is IMHO too much. I would welcome any idea as this situation is indeed something that I don't really like. About the package move, I support Frans suggestion: keep the package in D-I SVN, but in a tree that would be parallel to packages. By the way, it could be interesting to talk about moving tasksel there as well. Having it separated is mostly historical but the package is D-I team maintained for ages and is closely related to D-I anyway. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

It would be more complicated to have some languages for which the target is not 100% but, say, 82%, because these languages do not have win32-loader support. Well, having it in any level will not help much there. It will help for translators who read docs or read mails in debian-i18n. BUt you'll still get some bug reports. Anyway, as there is no perfect solution, my best proposal currently is moving the package either directly under trunk/ or into an otherpkgs directory parallel to packages/ (in case we decide to put something else in D-I SVN. [RFC] entropy plugin rework + support for the graphical installer
On Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 11:42:24PM +0100, Max Vozeler wrote: The implementation looks fine from a quick glance. Please feel free to add integrate it into cdebconf-entropy when you are happy with it. Attached is a patchset which makes various changes to the current cdebconf-entropy package in order to support other frontends than newt, adds support for the GTK+ frontend, and update partman-crypto accordingly. If directives weren't available, I would probably have gone for a similar but slightly diffent solution - we could have partman-crypto provide a description fragment _Description: The encryption key for ${DEVICE} is now being created. The different 'entropy' type frontend plugins would take the fragment and integrate it with the appropriate frontend- specific text to form a complete dialog. I finally choose this route instead of the more convoluted one I have proposed earlier. More comments related to translations on the proposed patchset: * AFAIK, the string displayed after gathering enough entropy was not translated before, as partman-crypto/entropy-text-success was not defined anywhere. So please comment on the newly introduced partman-crypto/entropy-success. * debconf/entropy/success is the fallback template when SUCCESS has not been substituted to a more relevant template. As it should not normally appear in d-i, I have put it under sublevel 5. Please comment on the wording nevertheless. :) * No string changes actually happened, but as the previous partman-crypto/entropy-text content has been splitted between debconf/entropy/text/{action,help} and partman-crypto/entropy, I would be glad to know the best way to update po files directly instead of putting more burden on translators shoulders. * debconf/entropy/gtk/* are slights variations of debconf/entropy/text/* mentioning the mouse and might benefit from better wording as well. I have tested these changes by putting the affected udebs directly in netboot images, so I am unsure if the changes in dependencies and dynamic retrieval of crypto packages are correct. I would be glad if someone could test that. :) Cheers, -- Jérémy Bobbio.''`. Bug#472389: busybox: no longer falles back to busybox applets if no executable if found
Package: busybox Version: 1:1.9.1-3 Severity: important CC'ing initramfs-tools maintainer, as it directly affects hooks into initramfs-tools. BusyBox 1.1.3 implemented a fallback to its own applets in case no executable could be found: BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5) Built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. ~ $ printf foo\n foo ~ $ PATH= ~ $ export PATH ~ $ printf foo\n foo while BusyBox 1.9.1 just throws an error BusyBox v1.9.1 (2008-03-22 22:06:19 UTC) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. ~ $ printf foo\n foo ~ $ PATH= ~ $ export PATH ~ $ printf foo\n ash: printf: not found Even though this behaviour is understandable, it does break hooks into current initramfs-tools making use of functionality neither provided by klibc nor busybox built-ins (but only as applets for busybox), because initramfs-tools doesn't create {hard, sym}links to busybox (#338405). Potentially affected packages (not checked in depths): - bootcd-mkinitramfs (it seems to use grep) - cryptsetup (it does use basename #466240 and seems to use grep) - evms (it seems to use grep) - initramfs-tools (it does use printf and seems to use awk as well) - live-initramfs (it seems to use awk, basename, grep and printf) - loop-aes-utils (it seems to use grep) - ltsp-client-core (it seems to use grep - mdadm (it seems to use grep) - nbd-client (it seems to use grep) - splashy (it seems to use grep) - uswsusp (it seems to use grep) A workaround seems to be enabling CONFIG_FEATURE_PREFER_APPLETS=y CONFIG_FEATURE_SH_STANDALONE=y FEATURE_SH_STANDALONE was enabled in busybox 1.1.3, even though it prefers busybox applets in favour of shipped executables (unless called with full path names), it might be needed until a better long term solution can be found.
