Just managed to check this. No, console=hvc0 doesn't skip the keymap
question, but looks like the kernels which have hvc don't throw and
error running kbd-chooser. At least that's the case under 2.6.25-xen,
which I tested a couple of minutes ago.

So let me raise the issue again (and risk some bikeshed effect):

 * Does kbd-chooser make any sense under Xen? (I guess not.)

 * Should we skip running it from a virtualized D-I? (I guess yes,
especially that it's so simple to achieve.)

 * Would a simple [ -d /sys/bus/xen ] check do?

Your mentioning testing of the incomplete warnings kind of implied before...

I have less problems with enabling ga after beta2 _if_ we get a commitment
that at least level 2 gets completed before RC1.

I should also have mentioned that, almost by definition, all users who
would choose Irish *will* understand English.

And of course, I meant "activate Irish after beta2", not for
beta2.but I should have mentioned that.

Bug#478591: cdebconf-entropy: Dialog texts and buttons

I had a look today, and due to newt current limitations, this would be
hard to do in a nice way. So I think this is pretty "wontfix".

The entropy plugins add a "Go Back" button when the "backup" capability
is set. This was not actually the case before version 29, where
cdebconf-newt-entropy was always adding the "Go Back" button.

So we have a regression here if it's not shown during the
installation. :D

Looks like have_entropy_plugin() uses "db_capb" instead of
"db_capb backup" in order to check for the "plugin-entropy" capability.
As I am currently on the go, I am unable to verify if this would fix the
problem…

If this is true, at least a clone of this bug should probably be
reassigned to partman-crypto.

Cheers,

This issue has been fixed in the current kernels in unstable and testing and
in daily built versions of the installer. I'm not sure whether or not it
will also be fixed in the next point release for Debian stable.

Dann: Could you take a look at that for 2.6.18?

The issue was fixed by Bastian in linux-2.6 (2.6.24-5) with the following
changelog entry (see also #468277):
 * [s390/s390-tape]: Override localversion correctly.

In fact I was surprised, how well this install ran, excellent work, folks!

The "desktop" task installs, if the installation is started the classic way

An "aptitude install kde kdm" solved it.

I chose spanish localization, but the options for Carribean or even other
countries others than European did not show up in the install with
win32-loader.

Install boot loader:
The dialogue asked me, if grub should be installed in the (hd0) disk, I said
no, "please install grub in (hd0,1)", but the MBR of the disk has been
overwritten.
I thought the initial bootloader would be left untouched, but no.

I got a user report saying that in a weird setup like:

  - WinXP in F:
  - Win98 in C:
  - boot.ini in C:

win32-loader fails to find boot.ini and aborts. Although boot.ini location
can be altered via expert mode, it'd be good if there was some fallback code
such that it would ask the user for boot.ini location when this file cannot
be found.

Well yes. I usually keep an in-target aptitude -y upgrade under
/usr/lib/finish-install.d... Surely it can (and probably should) be
done better.

Maybe, but you could (should? ;-) be aware of the flow of an install...
The kernel is installed during base system installation and at that point
apt-setup has not yet been run, so we don't _have_ any mirrors yet at that
point.

If you'd used a businesscard image instead of a netinst, it would still be
the same as during base system installation you have _only_ the regular
mirror. The security/volatile mirrors are only added during apt-setup.

I do not see it that way, for two reasons:

* I wouln't have chosen a netinst image if I was not willing to download most
stuff over the Internet; and even if I didn't use a netinst, the adding of a
mirror and security repositoriy to my sources.list also indicates that the
very next update I'm going to do is going to install those packages anyway,
so what do we gain with postponing that?

* I don't think there's a conflict between choosing a CD with packages and
downloading updates. I would choose a CD in the knowledge that the vast
majority of packages on it can be used directly, so that I would have to
download just those few packages that are newer.

Yes, indeed. I think the installer behaving this way is important for again
two reasons:

* From a security/stability standpoint: the packages that are to be upgraded
are expected to have changes you really want to have: security updates and
stable point updates. It makes sense to me to try and make the system as
secure and as stable as possible before we boot into it.

Everyone knows the Windows race condition where your system is infected before
you even have a chance to go to windowsupdate, and updates are only
downloaded after the system is running. Of course we're no where near such a
disaster, but if we have the opportunity to install critical updates before
we even start, we're proactively securing the system from the first second it
runs. That's a good feature to have.

* From a usability standpoint: I just booted into my new system, find out that
I have to upgrade the kernel, and then reboot it again, meaning I need two
reboots before I can properly start to use the system. If there is an
opportunity to make that just one, I believe it should be taken.

I'm unaware of D-I's internals, but from the viewpoint of a Debian user I'd
say: why upgade? Can't apt figure out the first time when it installs those
packages which need to come from cd and which from a mirror?

Thanks for considering this.

This should be discussed with the maintainer(s) of the responsible packages
(if it needs changing at all). it's outside the scope of the D-I team.

Not sure if this is really something the installer should do. It's somewhat
inherent in choosing a CD that contains packages IMO.
One issue might be that we could not limit it to security updates if the
user has also selected a mirror. An upgrade would include any package that
has a new version available. OTOH, if he did select a mirror, he probably
wants updates anyway.

If we do want to do this, I guess it would have to be a separate step in
pkgsel, preferably _before_ running tasksel. Maybe we should somehow check
if there are updates available and then run an
in-target aptitude --without-recommends safe-upgrade
possibly after prompting the user whether he wants to do the upgrade or not.

What do others think of this?

Here's a way to educate humandev about XEN virtual devices.
It's kind of a substitute for parted support not yet present
in libparted 1.7.1.

Thanks. That confirms what I've seen in an strace form another user with a
different command: the kernel returns -EBUSY on the mount attempt.

Cheers,

That does not require activation of Irish. We have plenty of inclomplete
languages already.

Given the fact that level2 is less than 1/4 translated and is pretty
essential for normal installs, I feel it is too early to activate ga,
especially so short before a release.

Bug#479473: debian-installer: DHCP client fails to assign address during install

2008-05-05 Thread Frans Pop
reassign 479473 dhcp3-client-udeb 3.1.0-3
thanks

General comments:
* please make sure that your normal text has a decent line width even
when you disable line wrapping because of the log
* when you replace values in a log, please make that explicit; currently
one could think that the invalid xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx MAC address could
be the source of your issue, but I'm going to assume you replaced it

I suspect that this is the root of your problem. Therefore reassigning to
the dhcp3-client package.

Andrew: a more complete log is available in the BR.

[l10n] Activate Irish?

2008-05-05 Thread Christian Perrier
Kevin Scannell, the Irish translator, completed the sublevel 1 file
for that language. Kevin is doing Debian l10n along with many other
major l10n work in FLOSS, which explains the slow pace.

On the other hand, he is very committed to this work and very
reliable.

That seems to be a good opportunity for us to "test" the new
localechooser feature that warns users about incomplete
translations. I therefore propose to activate Irish unless there is a
strong objection (which could come from Frans..:-)).

console-data status for Beta2

2008-05-05 Thread Christian Perrier
Console-data featured numerous changes in last releases and all these
have now got enough testing for it to be considered for testing.

Most of these changes are related to the udeb, thanks to Frans Pop's
invaluable help.

When compared to 2:1.05-1, the changes are:

- Added Canadian multilingual keymap. It is the default for French
Canadian users but not English Canadian
- uses Choices-C for debconf templates which makes the translators
  work more natural
- Bring back the "cf" keymap in the udeb for users of the
  old-style French-Canadian keymap (non multilingual)

I think this release is suitable for beta2.

Remaining work to do (post beta2):

- Overall consistency changes in keymap names

You need: BLK_DEV_INITRD

But the best general advise is to just start from the Debian kernel
configuration file and only disable options you are certain you don't need.

For i386 D-I uses the -486 kernel flavor. The config used for the udebs is
the same as the one used for the regular linux-image package.

After the beta2 release or after the lenny release? In the later case we
should add the multipath patch to 1.7.

Sure, that makes sense - there are other things like libvirt that would
benefit from a newer parted.

Which is of course something we're well aware off :-)
