Comments/Problems:

1. It only detected one of my network cards, with pcnet32 module.
The second one, smc_ultra (an ISA card) wasn't detected. After
the installation I had to add smc-ultra to /etc/modules.

2. Installer tried to use DHCP to configure network. It failed
because I use ADSL/PPPoE. It was far from obvious that I should
choose do not configure network at this time in my case (I was
honestly wondering what should I do). I guess many people have
PPPoE connections and at least some _hint_ would be nice.

3. After the reboot I had an option to Use PPP to install system.
I tried to use it, but it only allowed me to use PPP, not PPPoE.
Apparently it was not possible at all to install with PPPoE.

Having the root password already set up I switched to second console
where I found out that pppoe and pppoeconfig are already installed.
Why using them is not an available option during installation?

But the problems were not over yet. pppoeconfig utility failed
to communicate with concentrator and was unable to configure the
connection. This pretty much dumped me into editing /etc/ppp
files. Forunatelly I had my notes where to put what to make it work
and in 5 minutes I had my connection up and running.

I would not expect a regular user to do such things simply to
get his PPPoE connection (Actually it's ADSL or DSL from his POV)
to work.

Could PPPeE installation be made somewhat more straightforward?

Thansk guys for terrific installer anyway. *I* personally do not
complain at all, but a somewhat less experienced user would not
be able to use his Debian at all. How would he call for help w/o
network connectivity? ;-)

Cheers,

It is actually possible since Etch using the ppp-udeb module of the
debian-installer. As documented in the installation manual, specifying
module=ppp-udeb on the command-line allow to make a Debian
installation using PPPoE.

Connecting a USB printer to NSLU2

2008-07-27 Thread Mark Thommyppillai

Hi there,

I have nearly got my Debianslug to do exactly what I want it to do.
There's only one small thing which I can't get working so far. I am not
able to connect my Epson Stylus C66 printer to it via USB.

I have followed the usual instructions of installing such a printer by
firstly installing CUPS, then installing the driver (gutenprint for my
printer as advised by the webpage). The add printer menu on my local
CUPS webinterface detects that I have a printer attached via USB and
gutenprint allows me to select the new driver for it. After it is added,
I can not print test pages or even print a simple text file eg. lpr
text.txt. Looking in CUPS jobs list, I can see the job was sent but it
eventually says stopped.

I had a look at this webpage which seems to require more to be done to
add a USB printer. I haven't done this as I was confused as to whether
it applied to me. Also, I could find a match of kernel version on the
link it gives.

http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/DebianSlug/Printing

Would anyone know how to get a USB printer connected to debianslug and
printing first of all?

Thanking you in advance.

Mark.

pThe Debian project is pleased to announce the fourth update of its stable
distribution Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codename codename). In addition to
correcting several security problems and a few serious defects in the stable
release, for the first time in Debian's history an update for a stable
distrubtion also adds support for newer hardware by giving users the option to
install newer drivers./p

pExisting Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 installation CDs and DVDs can continue to be
used to install this update. After installation, upgrading via an up-to-date
Debian mirror will cause any out of date packages to be updated. However, users
of the network-console installation method are strongly encouraged to update
their media, see the Debian Installer portion of this announcement for
more information./p

 hello debian-release,

Hi

 I'd like to request a freeze exception for cryptsetup 1.0.6-4. I didn't

 tomorrow.

Cc-ing debian-boot as it contains a udeb... no objections from the RT.

Cheers

Luk

at least one change (to use askpass in the init script) is very likely
to fix several issues, among others a security bug (#477203).

please note that current cryptsetup in testing is 1.0.6-1 which is
rather outdated. according to grep-excuses, 1.0.6-2 was unblocked by Luk
but didn't migrate to testing due to a version mismatch (maybe -3 was
uploaded exactly at the time the unblock request was made).

it would be really sad to not have the many improvements since 1.0.6-1
 in lenny.

the exact changelog for -2 to -4 is attached below.

 greetings,
  jonas

 cryptsetup (2:1.0.6-4) unstable; urgency=low

   [ David Härdeman ]
   * Make sure $IGNORE is reset as necessary, patch by
Thomas Luzat [EMAIL PROTECTED] (closes: #490199)
   * Use askpass in init scripts as well (closes: #489033, #477203)

   [ Jonas Meurer ]
   * Don't copy_exec libgcc1 in cryptopensc initramfs hook, as it's already
copied by copy_exec /usr/sbin/pcscd automaticly. Thanks to Evgeni Golov
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]. (closes: #490300)
   * Remove the udev rules file again as the relevant rules are now provided
by dmsetup package which cryptsetup depends on.

 cryptsetup (2:1.0.6-3) unstable; urgency=low

   [ Jonas Meurer ]
   * Fix cryptdisks.functions to actually recognize the noauto option. Thanks
to Christian Pernegger [EMAIL PROTECTED] (closes: #483882)
   * Update patches/02_manpage.patch to fix two more typos, thanks to Bruno
Barrera Yever [EMAIL PROTECTED] (closes: #476624) and to remove a
 duplicate sentence.
   * Rephrase Enter password for $crypttarget to Enter password to unlock
 the disk $cryptsource ($crypttarget) in initramfs/cryptroot.script.
   * Bump Standards-Version to 3.8.0:
 - Add a README.source which references /usr/share/doc/quilt/README.source.
 - Add support for debian build option parallel=n to debian/rules.
   * Add a udev rules file to ignore temporary-cryptsetup-* devices, as
suggested in bug #467200. Thanks to Sam Morris [EMAIL PROTECTED].
   * Transform debian/copyright into machine-readable code as proposed in
 http://wiki.debian.org/Proposals/CopyrightFormat. Update and add several
 copyright notices.
   * Change reference to docbook xml v4.2 driver file from an online version
to a local one in the manpage files, as the build process should not
depend on internet access. Add docbook-xml to build-depends. Thanks to
Lucas Nussbaum [EMAIL PROTECTED]. (closes: #487056)

   [ David Härdeman ]
   * Hopefully fix askpass to properly handle console and usplash input
 (closes: #477203)
   * Clarify crypttab manpage (closes: #487246)
   * Make regex work if keyfile has extended attributes,
 https://launchpad.net/bugs/231339 (closes: #488131)
   * Support comments in options part of crypttab (closes: #488128)

  -- Jonas Meurer [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon, 07 Jul 2008 00:30:07 +0200

 cryptsetup (2:1.0.6-2) unstable; urgency=low

   [ Jonas Meurer ]
   * Taken from ubuntu:
 - debian/scripts/luksformat: Use 256 bit key size by default. (LP: #78508)
 - debian/patches/02_manpage.patch: Clarify default key sizes (128 for
luksFormat and 256 for create) in cryptsetup.8. (side-note in LP #78508)
   * Use 'shred -uz' instead of 'rm -r' to remove a tempfile that contains a
 key in gen-ssl-key example script.

   [ David Härdeman ]
   * Misc bugfixes to askpass, make sure it is installed to the correct
location and is built using pedantic mode.
   * Change the initramfs script to use askpass to prompt for
passphrases, this should hopefully fix #382375 and #465902 once it
is enabled in the init scripts as well.
   * Add a keyscript called passdev which allows a keyfile to be
retrieved from a device which is first mounted, mainly useful to get
 keyfiles off USB devices etc.
   * Unbreak MODULES=dep booting (closes: #478268)
   * Relax checks for suspend devices a bit (closes: #477658)
   * Convert man pages to docbook.

One minor bit; while dcc was also subject to security issues that were
not backportable, it was mostly removed as the outdated version was causing
harm to the DCC server network and a newer version couldn't be released
since upstream went non-free in later releases.

So this should rather say Incompatible with DCC network, security issues

So is either of these okay?

Hi folks,

I don't want to be annoying, but I really think this should be sorted out in
time for lenny. Not doing so will mean that boot will be less robust; for
example if one does:

  mkdir /tmp/boot
  mv /boot/* /tmp/boot/
  cp -a /tmp/boot/* /boot/

on a system where core.img was embedded, nothing will happen. OTOH if you do
the same on a system where core.img was referenced via blocklists, boot will
start crashing as soon as the (now free) blocks that held the old core.img
are overwritten.

Comments/Problems:

I succesfully installed debian copying firmware (isl3890) after
the reboot (previous to anything else after the rebbot e.g. root password).
However, in ubuntu this firmaware is included in the install CD
and you can configure the network right away from the beginning.

I think that, if the Debian policy does not allow to include this firmware,
it would be convenient to have the possibility to *manually* show it to the
installer e.g. in a floppy so that the network configuration could be easily
made.

For example, at the stage of configuring the network, a message should appear:
In order to work properly, a propietary firmare (isl3890) is needed. Please
copy this firmware in a floppy disc, insert it and press enter

I tried to look for the place where this firmware was in ubuntu in this early
stage and tried to do the same in Debian, but I could not access the floppy
where I had the firmware (could not mount the floppy drive: it said it was
a block device or something like that) and besides I would have had to
create some
directories: /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware and (perhaps)/lib/firmware.

When I tried to install etch or sid from a CD (testing and unofficial,
respectively), I could not pass this first stage, as the installer
encounterd dependencies that could not satisfy as the network was
not active.

I think this method (d-i asking for the firmware on ina floppy) would
be great also
for other firmwares (not only wireless cards').

This is now done since hw-detect 1.64 and will be in the
debian-installer for Lenny. Bonus: firmwares can also be loaded
from an USB stick.

Bug#492593: installation-report: pkgsel fails if etch-and-a-half is chosen

2008-07-27 Thread Kenshi Muto
Package: pkgsel
Version: 0.21
Severity: important

Hi,

Although I don't make sure the responsibility of this bug is pkgsel or
etch-and-a-half, pkgsel failed when I chose suite=etch.

pkgsel 0.21 calls aptitude safe-upgrade as default pkgsel/upgrade
debconf parameter. Unfortunately Etch's aptitude doesn't support this
method.

So it means current snapshot Lenny installer can't install
etch-and-a-half without a tweak.

Thanks,

To install etch-n-half users are supposed to use Beta2 versions of D-I
where this is not an issue. The etchnhalf installation instructions [1]
are very clear on that.

That said, this still should be fixed of course. The simplest fix is
probably to just skip the whole upgrate step when Etch is being
installed. I've committed a fix in pkgsel that does just that.

Re: Please review announcement of upcoming release of Debian 4.0r4 etch-and-a-half

2008-07-27 Thread Joey Hess
I'm sorry that this is late, but the announcement has a rather
disturbing number of problems. I'd suggest at least the following changes:

New CD and DVD images containing updated packages and the regular
installation
media accompanied with the package archive respectively will be available
soon
   at the regular locations.

This sentence is basically incomprehensible. How is installation media
accompanied by the package archive? respectively to what? I don't understand
what it's trying to say, so I can't even suggest a rewrite.

Etch and a half is Debian's desire

Poetical, but false. Suggest inserting the result of after is.

This marks the first time the Debian project updates several core packages
in its stable distribution without security implications and demonstrates its
   huge dedication for their users.

The above is perfectly well written, but it is also laughable puffery. If
we have a huge dedication to our users, why is this the first time we managed
to do this in over ten years? Suggest s/and demonstrates.*\.//

Components newer than the first release of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (etch) that
were not supported yet will be detected by an updated installation routine
which is able to install a newer Linux kernel (2.6.24) on the freshly
installed
   system.

While I suspect that there's a reading of the above that makes every word of it
true, it's not the obvious reading. I think that most people will read it to
suggest that d-i tries to figure out if the system needs 2.6.24 or can get by
with the old kernel and choses which to install, which, AFAIK is not true.
Suggest the following text, which comes from
etch/debian-installer/etchnhalf:

The etch-and-a-half release is essentially just the most recent
point release for etch, but with a more recent kernel (version
2.6.24). The main purpose of this release is to allow installation of
etch on systems not supported by the 2.6.18 kernel that is used in
   regular etch installs.

Bad English:
Dual-head setups are also supported rudimentary.
Replace:
There is also rudimentary support for dual-head setups.

Comma additions:

for the first time in Debian's history, an update for a stable distrubtion
also
^
adds support for newer hardware, by giving users the option to install newer
 ^
  drivers.

Note that in general I am disconcerted by the lack of review our press
announcements are getting, and the quality of their text.

Bug#492051: Lenny Beta 2 installer failure

2008-07-27 Thread Jérémy Bobbio
Hi!

Please keep the bug report CC'ed.

On Sun, Jul 27, 2008 at 10:55:32PM +0100, Jon Thackray wrote:
And yet further efforts. I rebooted using an Ubuntu CD, and checked what
modules were installed. It would appear that what is needed at least for
the PATA system on the 955 board (D955XBKLKR) is pata_marvell.
Unfortunately, this doesn't see the light of day until 2.6.25 kernels,
which is a shame given that it's needed for boards several years old now.
With this, and some other modules from 2.6.25 which I've been unable to
identify, I can see both PATA IDE discs and the CDROM on the same IDE
channel (although /dev/cdrom now points to /dev/scd0). I think this is
about as far as I want to go with this investigation, so unless someone is
prepared to produce a CDROM boot image (or a floppy boot image) that
contains the required modules, I shall be forced to use Ubuntu instead.

Most SATA drivers can be set (using the BIOS) to use a compatible mode
which would be supported, AFAIK, by the ide-generic driver which exists
in d-i beta2.

The current daily builds of the debian-installer uses the 2.6.25 kernel
and ships the pata_marvell driver in the pata-modules udeb. The
pata-modules is priority standard and is included on the CD-ROM but
not included in the cdrom initial ramdisk. Thus making it unavailable
until the content of the CD can be read (with a driver that would
support it, for example).

The ide-pci-generic module that is shipped in 2.6.25 has a command-line
option all_generic_ide that will make it claim all unknown PCI IDE
storage controller, which might fit your Marvell's.

Could you please try to start a daily build of the debian-installer,
specifiying on the boot command-line (use TAB to enter additional
paramaters), the following:
  all_generic_ide=1

I am leaving the rest of your email as it contains information that
have not been read by other followers of the debian-boot mailling-list.

 To summarise, the problems are:-

Lenny beta2 boot CDROM does not contain suitable CDROM drivers for this
 board
Lenny beta2 boot CDROM does not contain suitable ethernet drivers for this
 board
Lenny beta2 boot CDROM does not contain suitable ethernet drivers for an
 SMC network card
Lenny beta2 boot CDROM does not contain suitable floppy drivers for this
 board
because of this, it is impossible to save (and hence to forward) the
 installation failure debug logs

The same problems apply to the latest testing CDROM install

The floppy install does contain the missing ethernet drivers, both for the
 board and the SMC card
The floppy install does contain the missing floppy drivers
The floppy install does not contain the missing CDROM drivers

There is therefore the possibility of adding the missing CDROM drivers to
the driver set for the floppy install

 Further efforts.

I have now verified that the floppy drive is not faulty. The machine can
boot from it. I have since acquired the Debian floppy installation system
from http://linux.simple.be/debian/floppy and have been able to use it to
detect all the network cards in the system (one SMC card which the testing
latest and the lenny2 beta could not detect, and the on board Intel chip).
The cd-drivers from this site were still insufficient to detect the CDROM
 drive however.

So, one thing you will now be able to check is what network drivers are
available from the floppy installer that are missing from the testing
 latest and lenny2 beta.

One a system has been installed, I'll let you know what CDROM driver it
has chosen, assuming it does choose one.

Update of apt-setup needed for Etch+1/2 netinst CD

2008-07-27 Thread Frans Pop
Hi folks,

Testing by initially manty and later confirmed by me showed that the
option to use the etchnhalf netinst in combination with CD1 does not
work. Reason turns out to be that the CD remains mounted in /target
because the Etch version of apt-cdrom does not always unmount it; this
blocks being able to change the CD when asked to do so.

This must have gotten broken by the changes between beta1 and beta2 in
apt-setup, but I really cannot see how I've managed to miss it with all
the building and testing of the etchnhalf CDs that I have been doing :-(
Anyway, my bad.

Luckily the fix was not hard and I've just uploaded apt-setup 1:0.38 to
unstable which includes the fix [1].
I've tested the change for four installs: etchnhalf netinst only; netinst
+ mirror; netinst + 4.0r4 CD1; netinst + CD1 + CD2.

As this is a fairly fundamental feature of the etchnhalf netinst CD, the
best option seems to be to delay its build and publication until this new
version of apt-setup is in testing as the CD can then be built normally.
As apt-setup is an arch=all package this should be possible with minimal
delays. The only other change since apt-setup 1:0.37 which is currently
in testing is a trivial fix by Colin, so Beta2 should not suffer.

What still needs to happen now is the following:
- wait for apt-setup 1:0.38 to be accepted and hit the mirrors (should be
  with next dinstall/mirror sync)
- request release team to hint/sync to testing ASAP (I uploaded with
urgency=high, but that is not really relevant for udeb-only packages)
- wait for sync and check that the correct version is actually in testing
- build, test, publish etchnhalf netinst
- check and if needed correct link to netinst on website [2]; links are
  defined in releases/etch/debian-installer/etchnhalf-images.data (webwml)

As I'm going to be completely off-line for the next 3/4 days, I hope that
someone else on the d-i team can take care of the first few items and
coordinate with manty/sledge. If needed sledge can reach me by phone.

[1] Fix is to add 'umount /target/cdrom || true' in three places (r54615);
these are redundant for Lenny installs, but won't harm.

Bug#274695: not going to happen

2008-07-27 Thread Martin Michlmayr
FWIW, Netwinder support will be removed after etch, so I don't intend
to work on this bug.

Re: Please review announcement of upcoming release of Debian 4.0r4 etch-and-a-half

2008-07-27 Thread Frans Pop
On Sunday 27 July 2008, Joey Hess wrote:
I'm sorry that this is late, but the announcement has a rather
 disturbing number of problems.

There's also an issue with the D-I section. The fact that ssh was used
with network-console was the reason why d-i needed a rebuild, but the
announcement should also have mentioned that using older CDs will result
in vulnerable host keys being generated when openssh-client is initially
installed from CD [1] and that that is also fixed with the new release.

I also feel a reference to the relevant DSA would have been appropriate.

IMO with these omissions Joey's earlier suggestion [2] of a special DSA
about all this does make a lot of sense. Someone else will have to take
the initiative for that though.

I'm sorry that I wasn't available to comment this weekend, but the info I
had was (from #d-cd on Wednesday):
22:52:53 zobel: Sledge: planing for r4 is, that Ganneff and me are doing
it after 7:52pm install run on friday.
22:53:50 fjp: zobel: Did you add D-I stuff in you planning/ToDo list?
22:54:54 zobel: fjp: yes. i will contact you tomorrow evening about the
text for the press release.
22:55:20 zobel: need to clarify a few things first. eg. who is sending
out the announcement

I'd already reminded Martin of the need to coordinate the announcement
earlier (and it is in the SRM checklist [3]).

The first actual pings I got to review the RN were on Saturday (from
#d-boot):
14:39:54 Tolimar: fjp`: I got a first draft of the etch-and-a-half
announcement ready at http://people.debian.org/~tolimar/tmp/ . Could you
please have a look at it?

Given that the release was planned for Friday and Martin was going to
contact me on Thursday I really do not see how I should have known I
should have planned on being available on Saturday and Sunday as well.
As it happened I was not. Guess that's the risk when things are left until
the very last minute, especially if you _know_ you need input from
others.

I don't know how the communication between RT and d-publicity has been, so
I also don't know if/how things could have been started up sooner. From
my PoV it's primarily the job of the RT to make sure things get started
up early enough to allow for needed coordination/reviews/translation.

Cheers,
FJP

[1] If a security mirror is used this will almost immediately fixed, but
still.

Re: freeze exception for cryptsetup 1.0.6-4

  I'd like to request a freeze exception for cryptsetup 1.0.6-4. I didn't
upload it to unstable yet, but if no objections are raised, I'll do so

Cc-ing debian-boot as it contains a udeb... no objections from the RT.

Ok, I just uploaded cryptsetup 1.0.6-4 to unstable; with urgency=medium,
as important (#492451) and security (#477203) bugs get fixed.

I suggest to wait the full five days before unblock, so it gets at least
some testing in unstable before actually migrating to testing/lenny.

No changes relevant to debian-installer are made since 1.0.6-1, thus
debian-boot shouldn't have any objections.

The final changelog is attached. The changes since my initial post to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] are manly documentation improvements, and one
new feature (splashy support in askpass: #492451).

greetings,
 jonas

cryptsetup (2:1.0.6-4) unstable; urgency=medium

  [ David Härdeman ]
  * Make sure $IGNORE is reset as necessary, patch by Thomas Luzat
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (closes: #490199)
  * Use askpass in init scripts as well (closes: #489033, #477203)

  [ Jonas Meurer ]
  * Don't copy_exec libgcc1 in cryptopensc initramfs hook, as it's already
copied by copy_exec /usr/sbin/pcscd automaticly. Thanks to Evgeni Golov
[EMAIL PROTECTED]. (closes: #490300)
  * Remove the udev rules file again as the relevant rules are now provided
by dmsetup package which cryptsetup depends on.
  * Add splashy support to askpass, thanks to John Hughes [EMAIL PROTECTED]
for the patch. (closes: #492451) The support is limited to cryptroot
though, as splashy freezes for passphrase input dialogs from initscripts.
Document that in README.Debian.
  * Now that askpass is used as keyscript for interactive mode, it's not
necessary to set cryptsetup parameter '--tries=$TRIES' and TRIES=1 for
interactive mode anymore in cryptdisks.functions.
  * Implement special treatment for random passphrases now that we use
--key-file=- for all situations. Only necessary in do_noluks.
  * Fix the passphrase prompt string in initramfs/cryptroot.script to use
$cryptsource instead of $cryptsources.
  * Major documentation cleanup for lenny:
- Rewrite CryptoSwap.HowTo in README.Debian, remove CryptoSwap.HowTo.
- Refer to README.initramfs instead of CryptoRoot.HowTo for encrypted root
  filesystem in README.Debian.
- Remove outdated docs CryptoRoot.HowTo, usbcrypto.udev and gen-old-ssl-key
as well as the decrypt_old_ssl keyscript.
- Remove debian/TODO, didn't have any useful content anyway.
- Fix section ''9. The decrypt_derived keyscript'': Add swap option to
the example line for crypttab and other minor fixes. Thanks to
Helmut Grohne [EMAIL PROTECTED]. (closes: #491867)
  * urgency=medium since important (#492451) and security (#477203) bugs get
fixed by this upload.

cryptsetup (2:1.0.6-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * Bump Standards-Version to 3.8.0:

  * Support comments in options part of crypttab (closes: #488128)

cryptsetup (2:1.0.6-2) unstable; urgency=low

  * Taken from ubuntu:
- debian/scripts/luksformat: Use 256 bit key size by default. (LP: #78508)
- debian/patches/02_manpage.patch: Clarify default key sizes (128 for

2008-07-27 Thread Vincent McIntyre

Hi Jeremy

[ for some reason I did not get an email with your question, only the
bug did... Should I have gotten one if you sent mail just to the bug?
This may have been a transitory problem in our email system.
]

Is this also the last message you see when using Expert Installation?

Yes, this is.
I see
 loading linux.
 loading initrd.gz..
..ready.

Then I would normally see boot messages from the kernel, and (even with
the quiet option on) see a delay of a few seconds.

What happened instead is that the _instant_ the 'ready.' string appears,
the system went back to the start of the BIOS boot sequence.

I tried a more recent image,
http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/hd-media/boot.img.gz
md5: 355a9e6eee8abd27f6a5eb2e314622f7

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso
(dated Sat Jul 26 09:30:29 UTC 2008, not exactly the same as boot.img.gz)
md5: 7863f1046be6383363e50b61bfd01f49

This works correctly, ie the installer is able to boot and I get as
far as the network card configuration screen[1].
This is true whether I use the standard install item from the splash
screen, the graphical item, or the advanced options-expert install.

So I think this particular bug has been fixed and can be closed.

Thanks for your followup.
Vince

[1]
I still get stuck there, but it is sooo nice to have a sensible question
about loading the missing firmware! Great job!

Comments/Problems:

The installer couldn't mount its own partition - it seem that mount/the kernel
now by default tries to use iocharset=utf8 by default, but this charset isn't
available in the installer.
By changing iso-scan postinst to pass -o iocharset=iso8859-1 to the mount
command, it was able to succeed.

I guess it is related to the kernel changes recently described on devel:
