Re: speakup enabled d-i?
Contributors from the debian-accessibility group may be able to complete my answer Original mail to -boot: Quoting Terry D. Cudney ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Hello, I'm new to this list, so please bear with me. I have been using debian for several years now, with speakup (a text-only (cli) screen-review system for blind/visually-impaired users) The last system I installed using a CD netinst image from Shane ??. It installed etch and then I've had to do editing of the sources.list, to upgrade to sid and lenny. Then compiling a custom kernel to include the speakup patches. New releases of debian, I understand, have the necessary hooks in the kernel to permit speakup to loaded as modules without a custom kernel.. that's great, but... Here's my question: Is there a plan to include speakup in the d-i? wit current kernel and installing lenny? I am reluctant to go through the arduous process of installing etch/upgrading to sid then to lenny, etc. Hoping that speakup can be included in the d-i so that we blind/visually-impaired users can install an up-to-date system with speech from the beginning. Please advise if/when this might be included in the d-i. Thannks in advance, There has been recent work to integrate work specifically aimed for the blind and visually-impaired people. Not only speakup but also support for Braille devices. I'm personnally not completely sure about the status of this work, so I prefer leaving others to answer. I mostly didn't want your mail to remain unanswered (the D-I team is currently preparing the release of D-I for lenny which may explain why noone answered as of now). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Reason is that Lenny images are already seriously bigger than Etch images and IMO we really do not want any more size increase if we want to keep lowmem installs working. $ du mini.* 5856mini.etch 7992mini.daily That's the mini.iso for i386. Those are big already and already have a higher memory requirement. An extra increase there is a lot less harmful than for the regular images. I would also seriously suggest to limit speakup to x86 and possibly powerpc (if someone will test it!). The increase of the netboot images is actually fairly easy to explain. Uncompressed the initrd in 3800kB bigger. -5544 ./lib/modules +8496 ./lib/modules So, 2950 of that is kernel modules and can be explained mostly by the addition of USB and wireless NIC drivers. The size increase of the initrd for cdrom images is less dramatic: etch: 3835432 daily: 4309551 So, 0.45MB compressed. I would still argue for adding speakup only to the G-I images and would even suggest removing brltty from the regular images. That would make the G-I images the graphical+accessibility installer. We could combine that with making the graphical installer the default version of the installer for Lenny (i.e: the top choice in cases where both are available). I think all issues that blocked that switch have been solved now. For Squeeze we could even consider changing the current regular images to special lowmem images. After all, we can also offer D-I with the newt frontend by booting the *G-I initrd* with the DEBIAN_FRONTEND=newt option. After several unsucessful tries I found vanilla kernel 2.6.26.5 SMP able to netboot on V480 and V880 and stable enough to execute the installer. Fiddling with the modules now. You probably have copied the firmware file as a non-root user before recreating the initrd. - the firmware-bnx2 package is not installed, those files are not claimed by any package. I wonder how they will get updated, if needed? You will need to install the package manually (but this can be automated by a simple preseeding file).
