Bug#501367: installation-reports: various problem on an Apple iMac G3

2008-10-06 Thread Luca Capello
Package: installation-reports
Severity: important

Hi there!

The title is a bit stronger: the overall installation works flawlessly,
but two major problems (Debian CD image and X11 configuration) are
show-stoppers.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Comments/Problems:

1) boot

I usually download a multi-arch CD image and this time I did the same
(daily built 20081001-10:45, d-i 20081001-09:05). However, while the
same multi-arch CD boots fine on i386 and amd64, on powerpc machines
   gives the following errors:

   - [G3] /[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]:2,/install/powerpc/vmlinux:
  Unknown or corrupt filesystem

   - [G4] /[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]:2,/install/powerpc/vmlinux:
  Unknown or corrupt filesystem

   - [G5] /ht/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/ata-6/[EMAIL
PROTECTED]:2,/install/powerpc/vmlinux:
  Unknown or corrupt filesystem

The same problem happens with two other daily built multi-arch
netinst CDs (20080923-22:19 and 20080921-10:03), but not with
powerpc-only netinst CD (daily built 20081001-10:35).

2) clock

The following happened also with etch and randomly, thus I don't think
it's Debian-related, but it could be a symptom of hardware problems
   (like empty battery).

Sometime, after the first reboot and at GNOME login, the system
complained that the date was wrong (still set to something like
1903). However, if I performed another installation after this
"buggy" one, there was no date error.

3) X.Org

This is the main problem: after the first reboot, X11 starts, but the
screen remains black. After investigation, to have a "working"
screen I needed a single xorg.conf option for the "Monitor" section,
   taken from etch's xorg.conf:

 HorizSync 60-60

However, the screen resolution is set to 1280x968, which is not
wrong, but the font size is too small. I've never used this iMac
with Apple software, but according to the Apple site [1] (and
Wikipedia as well [2]) the correct resolution should be 1024x768,
which is obtained with another single xorg.conf option in the
"Monitor" section, again taken from etch's xorg.conf:

 VertRefresh 75-117

I can provide X.Org log files from etch and lenny as well as perform
other tests or even installations: this is still a playing machine,
thus no need to be careful with it :-)

Bug#488066: installation-reports

The DVD does not yet have the latest improvements, so the grub error can
be explained from that. You'll need to use one of the daily built images
to get the latest versions.

I forgot to mention that in my previous mail.

Yes, this dvd have been updated during the installation with a mirror
site, and at least two new "linux-headers" (a main update of the linux
system) have been done by the automatic update.

It's because of these main updates that the menu.lst file have been
upgraded too, and so I had to edit them again to replace
"*(nvidia*)*" (the name of the dmraid device created during the
installation) by *(hd0,1) *for I can reboot the server correctly.

Actually my Debian server is on a "online test", so I won't go for a
install' again (and I don't /need /to!), but I just tried to say that if
I have some more trouble with the GRUB after a new linux-headers update,
I'll probably answer to this note instead of creating a new.

If I can help with my experience wih dmraid, I'd be glad to do so, even
if I'm not an expert in informatics.

Thanks a lot for your attention (and patience with me horrible english)

Recently the support for dmraid in partman has been improved significantly
and some issues with grub installations have been fixed.

I expect this will have also fixed the problem you had.

Please see http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid for current
status and instructions for installing Debian on a Serial ATA RAID
device.

Hello.

I've just updated my Debian server today, and I've seen this update.

Actually, I've already installed Debian on a RAID with a most recent dvd.

The only problem I still have is the need to edit the default entry into
the grub menu.

(it shows nvidia and it must be replaced with hd0,1)

Editing the menu.lst file resolve that problem, untill a new
"linux-headers" is installed.

I'll send a new note if this trouble with GRUB continues with this
dmraid update.

cheers

please allow multipath-tool 0.4.8-13 into Lenny

2008-10-06 Thread Guido Günther
Hi,
the above release has these changes:

  * [5585feb] simplify udev dependency
  * [4cc8116] add a versioned dependency on dmsetup (Closes: #497686)
  * [9887760] blacklist cciss devices (Closes: #500991)

4cc8116 fixes an etch upgrade issue and 9887760 makes sure we don't try
to run multipath on cciss (which doesn't work in 0.4.8 or earlier
versions (so no regression)). If a user really wants to try it he can
whitelist the device. cc:'ing debian-boot since the package ships a udeb
but the it's not currently being used.

Indeed, I somehow managed to misread that. Not sure why, maybe
influenced by past practice... Btw. "loose firmware files" is a term
I've never encountered before, but the text made it sufficiently clear.

No, for the installed system it makes absolutely no difference which of
the two is used. (At least, if I read the code correctly.)

The tarball contains firware _packages_, not loose firmware files.

You discuss both the tarball and the package method clearly. The
first is simpler, I guess that's why it's mentioned first and is
preferred. But the second is cleaner on the installed system, thus
the work of selecting the relevant firmware package can't be avoided
anyway. I'm also not sure whether dpkg would silently overwrite the
copied firmware files if a firmware package is installed later.

These together make me think reversing the (implied) priorities would
be better.

As far as I understood the recommendation (e.g.
http://wiki.onmac.net/index.php/Triple_Boot_via_BootCamp and one other that I
do not remember), additional partitions may lead to problems with Windows.
However, I cannot (dis)prove it at present...

Anyway, thanks for the information.

Not an issue as long as the bootloader and kernel are available in one
of the first four partitions (excluding the EFI partition).

Comments/Problems:

Keeping in mind http://wiki.debian.org/MacBook, the installation proceeded
unexpectedly well. The partitioning has been done in MacOS X (entirely, i.e.
resizing and creating, with the graphical disk utility). The triple boot
layout is managed with rEFIt (http://refit.sourceforge.net/).

During "partition hard drives" I just have labeled the linux partition
correctly. Right after debootstrap (IIRC) I created a swap file (more than four
partitions are not recommended for GPT/MBR mix).

*suggestion*: support swap files in the debian installer

Grub2 has been successfully installed in /dev/sda3. Before rebooting I had to
synchronize MBR and GPT with
chroot /target
aptitude install refit
/sbin/gptsync /dev/sda

This is the only thing that is really *missing* in the debian installer.

Final adjustments:

* install 'pommed' so that the apple laptop hotkeys are recognized
* add 'options snd-hda-intel model=mbp3' so that the sound chip is detected
* correct the xorg keyboard options (for anyone who is used to the mac layout):
Option "XkbModel" "macbook79"
Option "XkbOptions" "apple:badmap"
* install 'gsynaptics' and configure the touchpad according to
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/README.Debian.gz
this would be easier if a 'ServerLayout' section and the 'Input Device'
section for the touchpad are present by default (like in Ubuntu)
* install 'lm-sensors' and add chip driver 'coretemp' to '/etc/modules'

Have not tried yet:

* bluetooth
* camera
* external monitor
* infrared receiver
* microphone
* wireless network

* map 2nd and 3rd mouse button to the keyboard
* use apple/cmd key as ctrl (so that apple-q quits application like in MacOS X)

Cheers, Jens

The debian-user or debian-kernel lists would have been more appropriate.
You question is rather off-topic for debian-boot.

> How do I make sure this new module gets loaded instead of the old one?

I don't think you can. You can only specify a full path if you use insmod
instead of modprobe. Only if the modules had different names you could
blacklist one and the other should be loaded automatically.

Why not? Seems like the simplest solution to me.

automatic loading of kernel modules

2008-10-06 Thread Philipp Hübner
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello,

I've got a question concerning automatic loading of kernel modules.
If there is a better mailing-list than this, please point me towards it,
I thought the people on this list would know best about kernel modules.

Okay, this is my scenario:
I'm using kernel 2.6.18 for xen, which ships the module bnx2 for the
broadcom network card.
Unfortunately this driver has a bug and doesn't work in bridging mode.

I have compiled the new driver from broadcom, now here's my question:

How do I make sure this new module gets loaded instead of the old one?
So far I've overwritten the kernel module with my own one, but that is
not a nice solution.

The kernel's bnx2 module is under
/lib/modules/2.6.18-6-xen-amd64/kernel/drivers/net.

If I place the new module (same name: bnx2) e.g. under
/lib/modules/2.6.18-6-xen-amd64/kernel/drivers/misc,
how do I tell the kernel to load this module instead of the old one?

Kind regards,

We should maybe consider an upload of tasksel now. It has a few "important"
pending changes:

- include popplper-data for CJK desktop tasks
- correct the welsh-kde-desktop task which was badly tagged because of
an old mistake of mine.
- include alsa stuff
