vesa framebuffer

2008-11-12 Thread Salvatore De Paolis
Hi all,
i'm new here and i'm learning about debian-installer.
At this time there's one behavior i still did not figure out.

I did this couple of tests:

1) make build_hd-media_gtk
2) make build_netboot_gtk

With the first i'm not able to enable the VESA framebuffer. I tried in
different ways but i couldn't achieve it.
I tested it both with
qemu -kernel linux -append video="vesa:ywrap,mtrr vga=788" -initrd
initrd.gz /dev/zero
and with grub on a usb stick.
With the second, since it creates the iso (but afaik this shouldn't
influence the result) i can successfully enable the VESA framebuffer
and see the GTK+ installer.
Otherwise, doing it manually with qemu do not works.
I still get the same error as the /proc/fb is not exported by the
kernel.

Could anybody tell to me what i'm missing?
I'm using the etch version of debian-installer

Regards
Salvatore

We also need to file a bug report about this, and record the problem
in the errata file.

I'm forwarding Walter's initial mail as a bug report. I'll assign this
initially to lilo-installer, then we'll see.

lilo.conf does not have that option. I booted a rescue disk, added
the option, reran lilo, and now it works. Yay!

Reinstall to a NSLU2?

2008-11-12 Thread Dean
The power died midway through a kernel update to an NSLU2, and now
it's stalling partway through the boot, without much of a clue that
I've seen in the /var/log files. I can either up the number of things
being logged, which might take a bit, or just take this shiny new 16
GB flash drive and do a clean install to it.

Simple question, I think; can you re-flash the device with Debian etch
after Debian etch has already been installed?

Thanks!
Dean

Could you take a look on the installed system and check if lilo.conf
has 'large-memory' option?

This issue looks to be a reincarnation of #479607. Mind to take a
look?

Debian Installer lenny release candidate 1

2008-11-12 Thread Otavio Salvador
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Debian Installer lenny release candidate 1
~~

The Debian Installer team[1] is proud to announce the first release
candidate of the installer for Debian GNU/Linux Lenny. Improvements
in this release of the installer

* Improved support for Live-CD installation media (much faster and
  more reliable than earlier releases);

* Support for some NAS devices based on Marvell's ARM-compatible
  Orion chip:
  o QNAP TS-109/TS-209 and TS-409;
  o HP Media Vault mv2120;
  o Buffalo Kurobox Pro;
* Installer images for Netwinder have been added again;
* Installer images for i386 Xen guests[2]
* Support for hardware speech synthesis (speakup) has been added;
* Upgrade of packages early in pkgsel, for example to get
  available security updates for base system packages;
* Support for loading firmware from (removable) media during the
  installation;
* i386/amd64: support for installing to and loading firmware from
  MMC/SD cards;
* New translations: Welsh, Irish, Northern Sami, Serbian (Amharic
  and Marathi were added in beta releases).

Known issues in this release

* i386: for this release, installation from floppy disk is not
  supported;
* PowerPC: the graphical installer should work on almost all
  systems with ATI graphics cards, but probably not others;
* touchpads should work with the graphical installer, but support
  may be suboptimal - if you experience problems, you should use
  an external mouse instead.

See the errata[3] for details and a full list of known issues.

We do need your help to find bugs and further improve the installer,
so please try it.

Installation CDs and DVDs, other media, errata, and everything else
you'll need are available from the Debian Installer web site[4].

The Debian Installer team thanks everybody who has contributed to this
release.

Bug#505496: syslinux: default64 doesn't work after after reloading "config" file.

2008-11-12 Thread Frank Lin PIAT
Package: syslinux
Version: 2:3.71+dfsg-5
Severity: normal

In the attached example (built with the script below), the idea is to
automatically
load vesamenu from isolinux.cfg. Then it is possible to quit the vesa menu (to
use
the F1 and F2 help screen. If one press "Enter", default or default64 should be
run.

The way we quit vesamenu is to invoke "config menu.cfg".

The problem it's that before vesamenu.c32, default64 is obeyed... but after we
quit
vesamenu.c32 the entry "default" is obeyed when a user press enter (even for
amd64).

Franklin

Note: As a work around, in the attached "menu.cfg", it is possible to use
"default run-autodetect" which uses ifcpu64.c32 for cpu detection.

The module ifcpu64.c32 doesn't work as expected under virtualbox.

If we build a simple test image with the script below.
 * virtualbox will always try to run the entry "a64", where as qemu and
qemu-system-x86_64 works as expected.
 * default/default64 does detects cpu correctly.

Can you grab the installer syslog and send it gzipped to us? We'd need
to indentify if it is a LILO issue or a xfsprogs issue (or kernel,

Bug#505477: partman hangs if you press "Go Back" after warning message

2008-11-12 Thread Knut Auvor Grythe
Package: partman-base
Severity: important

This might be a partman-lvm issue instead, I'm not quite sure.

When doing manual partitioning, selecting a physical lvm partition and pressing
Enter the following message is displayed with a red background:

"Partition in use
 No modifications can be made for the partition #6 of device IDE1 master (hda)
 for the following reasons:

 In use by LVM volume group vg1"

If you select "Go Back" in this dialog, an empty blue screen is displayed.
Killing partman did not seem to help (although I might have been killing the
wrong stuff).

Pressing "Contine" returns me to partman, like I expected "Go Back" would.

Sorry if I did not make it clear. I did test the i386 installer, and
XFS on "/" did work. It is only on amd64 that it does not. I tried
again with just the "standard system" task and I got the same problem.

That screen is already pretty full. We just don't have the space to

I just tested a fairly basic install in a VirtualBox machine: x86 and
a single XFS FS.

The installer used LILO as boot loader, as expected andeverything
ended up working OK at the end.

Maybe someone could try to reproduce this on an AMD64 system ?

Walter, maybe you (just doing a simple install, with the "standard

I agree that the cd builder scripts should have been modified so only
multiarch would haved used this new trick.
But:

That's confirmed: the arguments aren't passed.

I agree that if such solution were used, the trick should only be
present in multiarch CD (But I wasn't able to provide such improvement).

Especially since we are so close from the release, I completely agree.

I think we can now safely assume that this is delayed for squeeze and
to be moved in the "wished features" list (and probably the release
goals list).

[PROPOSAL] Identify tasks in the D-I team and "assign" them

2008-11-12 Thread Christian Perrier
Recent discussions around the release as well as during the release
preparation meetings we had these days lead to realize that our team
suffers from some misunderstandings/disagreements/whatever about the
"Who does what" topic.

We also suffer from low resources but sometimes have hard time telling
the people who contact us and want to help what they could help about.

In an attempt to try giving us opportunities to do all this better, I
imagined that I could collect a list of atomic "tasks" that have to be
done during D-I development cycles. The point would then be to put
along with these tasks, some names. Those would be the people
"responsible" for the said task(s), hopefully with a backup, for the
most critical tasks (we could also identifiy what tasks are
"critical").

Please find below a very first attempt to build such list. This is not
sorted at all, but more the way things came up to my mind and mostly
intended to give you an idea of what I'm thinking about, here.

Please feel free to comment, add suggested "tasks" (I probably omit
many of these, the former and current release managers can probably
tell more).

Don't be scared by the number of tasks and the low number of ppl we
can put in face of them. We know we are short in resources..:-)

Bug#505243: Multiarch CD directly boots in the amd64 installer

2008-11-12 Thread Frans Pop
On Tuesday 11 November 2008, Frank Lin PIAT wrote:

I'm afraid that IMO this patch is not a very good idea.

First of all, as it is, it is incomplete and breaks other installation
methods (in fact, I think the change in config/x86.cfg is wrong for CD).
But that could be fixed.

More importantly, I think it will break the addition of boot options by
the user, for example booting with 'install noapic'. Or are they
preserved somehow?
Even if they are preserved, are they preserved *correctly*? I.e. appended
(not prepended) to the append lines defined in the options you jump to,
and without adding any extra "--".

And last but not least I feel that it is a too elaborate patch to support
multi-arch, which is after all an exception, and makes the far more
common single-arch use case needlessly complicated.

I still feel that the basic problem is not in D-I, but in syslinux and the
best option for Lenny may still be to just comment out 'default64
amd64-install' and accept the resulting (minor) erratum.

The information that was gathered while tracking this issue down is very
valuable. We now have a much better understanding of the problem and what
does not work/could work. And I really like the option to jump back to
the menu from the help screens.

I'll try to do some testing myself today on this issue.

Cheers,
FJP

Hi,

is there any status update regarding dmraid=true boot parameters or your
settings option?

Giuseppe.
