As both issues are covered, either by the errata or the installation
guide, I propose closing the bug report. Frans, given that you did
comments without closing the bug, I think it's better if you do
it.unless of course you think it should be kept opened.

Still, we could maybe enhance the errata entry and mention this "USB
stick" case as it's probably not obvious for someone installing with a
USB stick that "Disk devices may change on reboot" could apply on
his|her case (as it says "On systems with multiple disk controllers,
blah blah blah").

Devin, don't waste your time - nothing has changed in the kernel in

Longstanding known issue I'm afraid. See:

Well, users are supposed to be able to find the installation guide and
hardcoding such stuff in the installer itself would make it less useful
for derived distributions. In our opinion the website has sufficient
links, which will of course be further improved when Lenny is released.

Cheers,

Hello Devin,

Could you give a try in current daily installer since it has a new
kernel version and see if RTC looks OK? If it doesn't it looks like a
kernel issue to me.

Not really; desired if possible. In case a build fails he/she is one

Clock/timezone setup: [O]
User/password setup:[O]
Install tasks: [O]
Install boot loader:[E]
Overall install:[O]

Comments/Problems:

GRUB 1.x fails to boot from hard drive after installer reboots;
hangs after the BIOS prints "Booting from hard drive" (absolutely no
GRUB messages or anything).

Re-inserting the USB stick with the installer and rebooting
causes the machine to boot successfully from HD. (HD has higher boot
priority than USB memory stick, so the contents of the USB stick is
probably irrelevant).

It appears that the presence of an USB stick during GRUB install
confuses GRUB about its whereabouts. I believe the contents of
/boot/grub/device.map was something like this:
  /dev/sda (hd0)
  /dev/cciss/c0d0 (hd1)
  /dev/cciss/c0d1 (hd2)

(unsure about the last two lines as this is from memory, but they
definitively listed something about /dev/cciss)

also /boot/grub/menu.lst had an entry "root (hd1,0)"

/dev/sda is of course the USB memory stick.

So, the first stage grub loader looks for itself on the second
"hard drive" (hd1), which only works when there's an USB stick present
during boot to take up the (hd0) slot.

To get the machine booting without requiring the memory stick being left
in an USB port, I edited /boot/grub/device.map and removed the
"/dev/sda" entry, and corrected the /dev/cciss entries to start with
(hd0...something?) Also changed /boot/grub/menu.lst to contain "root
(hd0,0)", then ran update-grub, and finally 'grub-install (hd0)', IIRC.

Sorry for not having the exact details about everything, but as I
mentioned I don't have access to the machine at this moment.

Also, the network cards required bnx2 firmware debs on the memory stick.
It'd be helpful if the installer could include an URL to the
firmware.tar.gz and/or pointers to the appropriate section of the
installation manual for how to include those files, when it puts up the
error message about missing firmware.

Comments/Problems:

Timezone setup was fine, but the system RTC does not appear to be running,
so attempts to write to the hardware clock (which require an RTC poll)
failed, causing a brief (but properly detected by the installer) hang.
Installed files were timestamped correctly, but on post-install reboot the
clock was wrong (also if the clock isn't running the hwclock access on boot
will stall, taking hours for the first boot, but I'd disabled that before
the reboot.)

I let tasksel proceed with the default "Standard system" task, which was
a mistake -- it took over an hour to install those packages, most of which
I then had to remove manually.

Ok. The advantage of interactive is that you can unselect what you don't
want :-)

Anyway, this has notthing to do with D-I itself. You'll need to report the
problem to the individual packages involved. Their maintainers will
probably need to coordinate on (alternative) dependencies. Suggest you
file bugs against the xfce packages as their maintainers are most likely
to be motivated to look into this.

I closed the BR because the task selection is fine and this was only a
side issue. You're better off filing a "clean" new bug report on this.

Cheers,
FJP

Interactive aptitude is where I first experienced the issue with the
pulling in of gnome. I have to manually deselect those items after
selecting the xfce-desktop(sp?) task in order to not get them.

Comments/Problems:

Installation was successfully.
But, the hostname is not set.

Here is a part of the isolinux.cfg:

label lenny_rbg-nb
kernel /install.386/vmlinuz
append vga=normal initrd=/install.386/initrd.gz locale=de_DE
hostname=RBG-NB console-keymaps-at/keymap=de-latin1-nodeadkeys
file=/cdrom/preseed/lenny_rbg-nb.preseed -- quiet

the hostname has to be "RBG-NB", but the hostname is "noname".

During installation, the installer don't asks for a hostname.

If you need further informations, please let me know.

If you are using DHCP, you cannot set the hostname. It will always be
taken from what the DHCP server provides (which must be "noname" in your
case.

Closing your report as that was the only issue.

Thanks for submitting your report and good luck with the new system.

Bug#505243: Multiarch CD directly boots in the amd64 installer

2008-11-19 Thread Frans Pop
On Tuesday 18 November 2008, Frans Pop wrote:

The idea was to include the default and default64 options only in
prompt.cfg so they would only be "seen" when the help screens are
displayed. However, the result is that default64 is ignored and isolinux
always boots i386 when hitting enter at a help screen.

So I've decided to stick with the workaround using ifcpu64.c32 and that
patch is now committed for debian-cd.

When the bug in syslinux is fixed or some alternative solution is found,
the workaround in debian-cd should be reverted (or possibly changed so it
does not apply to images having the fix).
