So, now, we're officially listed as the lenny release blockers..:-)

From what I've collected, all missing bits for D-I RC2 to happen have
been achieved and we just need to put our own set of puzzle pieces
together.

Otavio, do you have a release timeline?

I guess that now, someone needs to build d-i, ask for the remaining
udebs to enter testing (rootskel, rescue, cdebconf...), have the RC2
images built and do some testing.

Having this happening before the upcoming week-end would be good
though the time frame does not make it easy (many ppl wandering around
for Christian Christmas holidays), so that tests can happen during the
week-end (this is what we did for RC1).

Please note that I'll be personnally unavailable from Dec 27th to Jan
2nd though my own contribution in that work can be mostly testing and
that's "all".

When D-I RC2 is released, I personnaly plan to focus on install
reports so that we have a well-documented errata file (I suspect we
might discover new errata entries) and maybe document some issues in
the general release notes.

We also probably need to contribute something for the upcoming lenny
release announcement in order to give some focus on the Lenny
installer new features when compared to the etch installer.

Creating usb boot pendrives

2008-12-14 Thread Frank Lin PIAT
Hi,

For the record, there's a windows frontend to assist creating usb
bootable pendrives. it's looks nice, probably compatible with our images
(not tested), and it's GPL.

Thanks for the anonymous who posted that on the wiki.

Better to instruct to not add ahci in blacklist but just use:

modprobe -r ahci; modprobe pata_marvel ; modprobe ahci

Rest looks OK

Bug#494293: Reinstalling...

2008-12-14 Thread Henk Koster
OK, I reinstalled from the daily debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso dated
13 December 2008 on my MacBook Pro 4,1 (Penryn), dual-booting with Mac
OS X Leopard, using partitions /dev/sda3 and /dev/sda4 for root and
swap, respectively. As before, installation went without any problem,
with again the installer correctly detecting EFI/GPT and automatically
installing Grub-2 (grub-pc): I opted for installing it to the MBR.

Upon reboot, the rEFIt boot manager showed both Mac OS X and GNU/Linux
icons, but selecting the latter gave a "boot media not found" message
--- a known problem, since the MBR partition table must first be
synchronized with GPT. On my wish-list is to have the installer do this
(e.g. with the gptsync utility). In the event, I rebooted and used the
Partition tool in the rEFIt menu, then rebooted once more, chose the
GNU/Linux icon and lo! the Grub menu appeared and few seconds later the
familiar Debian login screen.

So, it appears that my earlier Grub problem has been solved, for which I
thank the developers.

Preparation of the release announcement

2008-12-14 Thread Christian Perrier
The proposed release announcement is available at:

http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/ReleaseAnnounce

Please comment/edit/etc.

I tried to sort out bug fixes and improvements (which were tracked in
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/LennyRC2Prep) as well as put in
light the most annoying issue (RC bug on rescue about auto-assembling
RAID arrays).

Updates to the home page

2008-12-14 Thread Christian Perrier
When the time will come, the D-I home page
(http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer) will need changes to
reflect the publication of RC2.

Please find the proposed changes and the new page attached to this
mail.

This is basically s/RC1/RC2, that's all.

Please comment about possible additions, removals, etc.

Installing with the Debian-Installer

For official Debian installation media and
information, see
the etch page.

To install Debian testing, we recommend you use
the lenny RC2 release of the installer, after checking its
errata. The following images are available for
lenny RC2:

netinst (generally 135-175 MB) CD images

businesscard (generally 20-50 MB) CD images

	full CD/DVD sets

		CD:
		DVD:

	full CD/DVD sets (via bittorrent)

		CD:
		DVD:

	full CD/DVD sets (via jigdo)

		CD:
		DVD:

other images (netboot, USB stick, etc)

Or install the current weekly snapshot of Debian testing
which uses the same version of the installer as the last release:

	full CD/DVD sets

		CD:
		DVD:

	full CD/DVD sets (via bittorrent)
	— only sufficiently seeded images are listed

		CD:
# Not really enough time to get these seeded properly
# DVD:

	full CD/DVD sets (via jigdo)

If you'd like something newer to help us test a future release of the
installer, or because of hardware problems or other issues, try one of these
daily built images which contain the latest available version of
installer components.

netinst (generally 135-175 MB) and businesscard (generally 20-50 MB) CD images

netinst and businesscard CD images (via jigdo)

	multi-arch CD images

other images (netboot, usb stick, floppy, etc)

If any of the hardware in your system requires firmware to be
loaded with the device driver, you can use one of the
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/firmware/";>\
tarballs of common firmware packages. Instructions how to use the tarballs
and general information about loading firmware during an installation can
be found in the Installation Guide (see Documentation below).

Notes

Before you download the daily built images, we suggest you check for
	http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Today";>known issues.
For CD and DVD images, an MD5SUMS file is available in the
	same directory as the images.
For downloading full CD and DVD images the use of bittorrent or jigdo
	is recommended.
The multi-arch CD images support i386/amd64/powerpc and
alpha/hppa/ia64; the installation is similar to installing
from a single architecture netinst image.
The multi-arch DVD image supports i386/amd64/powerpc; the
installation is similar to installing from a single architecture full
CD image; the DVD also includes the source for all included packages.
As m68k is currently not included in the testing suite, there
are no weekly snapshots for m68k.

After using the Debian-Installer, please send us an
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch05s03.html#submit-bug";>installation report,
even if there weren't any problems.

Proposed errata page

2008-12-14 Thread Christian Perrier
In preparation for the RC2 release, please find attached the proposed
errata page.

One should note that the Dzongkha display issue is still mentioned as
we got no ACK from translators that using a 9pt. font size would be OK
for them.

Errata for lenny release RC2

This is a list of known problems in the lenny RC2 release of
Debian Installer. If you do not see your problem listed here,
please send us an installation report
describing the problem.

Auto-assembly of RAID arrays in rescue mode can corrupt data

Rescue mode should be used with great care when software RAID
arrays were in use on the system to rescue. The rescue mode scripts
automatically assemble arrays, which could lead to data corruption in
the presence of invalid or obsolete RAID superblocks.

Marvell disk controllers not fully supported

Due to a pata_marwell module not begin properly autoloaded
on i386 and amd64 media,
peripherals driven by Marvell disk controllers are not detected. If
IDE is used in legacy mode with these controllers, it is needed
to pass 'ahci.blacklist=yes' to have the CD reader properly detected.
Then, when the installer boots, switch to console 2 (Alt+F2) and
run 'rmmod ahci; modprobe pata_marvel; modprobe ahci' before
	continuing.

Corrupted display of messages in Dzongkha installs

When the password chosen for root and its confirmations do not
match, the display of screens that follow is garbled, during
installs in Dzongkha language (broken display of italic
font).

Disk devices may change on reboot

On systems with multiple disk controllers, the kernel/udev may assign
a different device node on reboot of the system than was used during
installation due to difference in load order of drivers.
This can lead to failure to boot the system. In most cases this can be
corrected by changing the bootloader configuration and /etc/fstab,
possibly using the rescue mode of the installer.
Note however that this problem may occur again on subsequent boots.

Reboot problems when installing from a USB stick

The former problem may also happen when installing from a USB stick.
Temporarily keeping the USB stick in place will allow you
to boot the installed system and correct the bootloader
	configuration file. See
	http://bugs.debian.org/506263";>#506263
	for details about such workaround.

Buggy routers may cause network problems

If you experience network problems during the installation, this may be
caused by a router somewhere between you and the Debian mirror that
	doesn't correctly handle window scaling.
	See http://bugs.debian.org/401435";>#401435 and this
	http://kerneltrap.org/node/6723";>kerneltrap article for
	details.
You can work around this issue by disabling TCP window scaling. Activate
a shell and enter the following command:
	echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling
For the installed system you should probably not completely disable TCP
window scaling. The following command will set ranges for reading and
writing that should work with almost any router:
	echo 4096 65536 65536 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rmem
	echo 4096 65536 65536 >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_wmem

i386: no installation from floppy disk

Due to an increase in the size of the 2.6.24 kernel, we are unable
to provide installation images for installs from floppy disk. We
expect to be able to support floppy installs again when the installer
switches to the next kernel version.

	PowerPC: various issues

The PowerPC port has several issues in this release:

installation from floppy on OldWorld PowerMac is broken
because no device node is created for the swim3 module
and as miboot is not included
the snd-powermac module is no longer loaded by default as
it will lock up some systems; you will need to add it to
		/etc/modules manually

	Sparc: various issues

The Sparc port has several issues in this release:

Broken serial console support. In some situations
	(see http://bugs.debian.org/504721";>bug #504721
for details), the serial console used may not
be properly re-opened and therefore become non
responding. Passing 'console=ttyS0' (or whichever
device the console is attached to) may we used
as a workaround.
fails to recognize ESP/FAS SCSI controller:
installer images are missing the sun_esp
kernel module which is needed to support CD and disc
drives connected to an ESP or FAS controller.

	s390: unsupported features

support for the DASD DIAG discipline is currently not
		available
support for LCS network interfaces is no longer available
