It would have been nice to have a bit more time to comment on such a
 substantial patch, but well.

I didn't think it was actually very complicated or non-obvious, despite
the size, which is why I went ahead.

I would strongly suggest to at least not actually _show_ ext4 as an option
as long as not all blockers are fixed, i.e. not yet list it in
valid_filesystems (IIRC). That will allow us to upload partman-ext3 if
needed without having to worry about confusing users.

OK; done.

 Yes, it makes sense.

I do like the idea of meta bug since it makes really easy to spot what
is still missing. What people things about it?

I'm more comfortable with the wiki for relatively small things like
this; I added it to DebianInstaller/SqueezeGoals. Feel free to convert
it to a bug with dependencies if you want, though.

We could, in principle, do svnadmin dump | (human does some very careful
editing) | svnadmin load. We'd have to be very careful, and I'd
recommend not doing this until after Lenny is out.

I wonder if that will cause problems for Lenny installs. It is quite

 Looks like it is harmless.

As you say; nothing currently depends on cdebconf-terminal as far as I
know. (In future, we *should* depend on cdebconf-terminal and have
libdebian-installer be smart enough to notice an XB-Debian-Frontend
field and pick the right provider; all these 'anna-install
cdebconf-$DEBIAN_FRONTEND-terminal' hacks are unpleasant.)

Re: On installation media and firmware [Re: New section for firmware]

On Wednesday 24 December 2008, Don Armstrong wrote:
It would be nice if you (or someone else) would then explain[1] why
having a limited set of d-i images + cd images which contained the
non-free firmware necessary for certain hardware to boot would be an
intractable solution. From where I sit, the major issues with it would
 be:

The major issue is that it does not solve all use-cases where firmware is
needed. It does not solve the problem for netboot installations, nor for
 hd-media installations.

1) So you are saying the NIC can netboot without firmware just fine
but won't work under linux at all?

2) Also which hd-media installations need firmware to access udebs?

3) A d-i image which contained the non-free firmware would work just
fine for netboot or hd-media.

Also it does not have to solve all use-cases. It just has to solve
more than without this solution. Further not all install media have to
work all the time. So what if the netboot.iso won't work and you need
a non-free-businesscard.iso due to firmware udebs? As long as it
allows at least one method to work and allows more people to install
Debian than without that is a plus.

Also, D-I currently does not support switching CDs during early parts of
the installation. Implementing that would be a fairly major pain.

With a cd image which contains the firmware there is no need to switch
the CD to a second just firmware image.

We don't want to have users jump through hoops. Having to burn an
additional image just for firmware and having to switch to that image and
then switch back to the installation image is IMO a major hoop.

The hoops are for the debian-cd team to jump through, for them to
generate a 100% free and an actually usable image. Just like there was
cd1 and cd1+non-us a while back there would be cd1 and cd1+firmware.

It also does not really add anything to the option we already have to load
 firmware from removable media.

It would remove the need for the user to jump through hoops to create
and use a second removable media. Plus you said above CD switching
isn't possible early on.

 Cheers,
 FJP

You're the main person who follows all commits by mail, as far as I
know, so you're probably best-placed to comment on that.

I also still feel that having daily syncs is way too much and leads to way
too many commits which have the side effect of obscuring other changes. I
can see some point in having daily sync runs after a call for translation
updates when a release is being prepared, but at other times I feel that
e.g. 3 times per week would be more than enough.

I tend to agree, having been trying to look through 'svn log' for
various things recently and finding it hard to see anything else for all
the translation commits.

They are on IRC. But this is about the content of the commits, which you
obviously can only see in mails.

Yeah, and I would not like to have to delete them. I could just filter
them to /dev/null of course, but IMO it's better set things up on alioth
so they get routed just to people who _do_ want them.
(That could also be done by routing them to some other group address than
private mail addresses of course, but I'm not sure if that is worth
setting up.)

Having played with the -r option, I seem to have tracked down the
  revision it's stressed about:

p...@cold:~/src/debian-svn/d-i$ git svn fetch -r57093:57094
Checksum mismatch: trunk/packages/po/sublevel4/da.po
  c9893a6364a37460e7a8ee1676d7ac0c9e85f59e expected:
  2df48ca6c7a79d95b479c4f16eec44ba
 got: ec0b72182b31be69dcae734015d9e316

so it looks like the transition from 57093 to 57094 is where git
  chokes.

The cause of the git-svn failure is almost certainly the file size of
da.po. It also looks as if this is only a problem on 32-bits systems as
my own git-svn checkout (on an amd64 system) could handle the file
 without error.

Turns out the actual problem was merely a too small TEMP directory.
Seems like a bug that git-svn does not catch the out of space error
correctly though.

[18:26:00] fil fjp: just put a 2GB /tmp on the machine, and can now
clone the sublevel4 directory, which wasn't working before -- the problem
does seem to have trashed my main clone though :-(
[18:27:20] fil so looks like that's all it was -- while fixing it, tried
1GB, which didn't work, but actually threw an out-of-space error, which
would have been much more helpful

I do not understand, because the result of msgfmt was this:

$msgfmt -cvo /dev/null pt_BR.po
75 mensagens traduzidas.(75 translated messages)

And to ensure that the correct file I sent, i do diff and the result was
this:

$ diff -u pt_BR.po pt_BR_bts.po  pt_BR.diff

$ cat pt_BR.diff

The diff did not produce any results.

gtranslator also does not show any messages fuzzy

Christian,

I noticed that this is kept in D-I SVN, is this not
listed in packages/po/sublevel* ? Since I'm keeping the
SVN up-to-date based on packages/po/ I'm probably missing
packages that are not auto-synced, is there a list of such
packages?

If I knew that console-setup is not being listed as
a sublevel, I would probably have committed (or already
translated it). Probably, there are other PO files missing
pt_BR translation there that I was not aware of. :-(

Kind regards,

Yes, I can confirm that the daily built image (22-Jan-2009 04:13, netinst) is

Because console-setup is not used by d-i as of now (actually, it's

So, it wouldn't be fair to those who want to first work on d-i to add
