Why not? Even if we're not able to provide messages in the native
language of the user, it's still _very_ useful for the user to be able
to type mails in his own language.

This is not how the reasoning was made all along D-I early development
and not how console-data was maintained.

Keymaps were added to the udeb of console-data only when the given
language was supported. And, as of now, there has been no deep
complaint that it should be done otherwise.

I think anyway we should be in some way selective about what keymaps
are proposed and not add any random keymap because it's added to
xkeyboard-config and that's the first one for Klingon. The world of
keymaps is a big mess (and, indeed, xkeyboard-config does not make it
bettersee the number of variants for some keymaps)and the
point of keymap selection in D-I is more providing with a good general
support for users

Still, that's quite a minor issue (whether we have 68 or 107 proposed
keymaps). I would more like to have an idea whether a scheme with a
reduced number of possibilities is accepted or not before we start
hacking on this (that requires debconf templates that would be
specific to the udeb as well as a specific .conf script...which would
be much much smaller).

Ok.

I fear that users who need the support just do not dare asking for it,
used to having poor support from Microsoft for instance.

Still, that's quite a minor issue (whether we have 68 or 107 proposed

Well, a menu with a hundred entries is maybe not so convenient. My
point was that there are a lot of different keyboards for the various
languages (please note that my script doesn't show any variant) and at
some point we could want to support them all, so we have to wonder how
to present the choice among a hundred of them.

something is premature, but the previous situation was just a deadlock.

I also feel it is rather inconsistent to have tasksel install Recommends
while debootstrap and base-installer do not.

debootstrap is a slightly odd case (because it's also used to construct
explicitly minimal systems, in which case the rules seem different) and
I've long been unsure about how it should behave. Maybe it just needs an
option for it.

I think it's more important for tasksel to be consistent with the
default configuration of apt than with how the base system is installed,
though.

Bug#532515: handling of Recommends (was: on making decisions vs letting things happen)

On Monday 06 July 2009, Colin Watson wrote:
So does that mean you feel that the policy manual's description of

I don't think policy for Recommends is wrong, but I do feel it results to
a hell of a lot of packages getting installed that are not actually
needed/wanted in practice. IMO the special handling of Recommends in D-I
so far was justified, especially as we did consciously compensate for not
installing Recommends by default by adding them to the task definitions
in cases where they were really needed/wanted.

Realistically, either (a) the Recommends were correct or (b) nobody was
going to bother fixing them until they started being installed by
default as policy says they should be.

I feel that the change could have been discussed more before being
implemented in tasksel, possibly with some coordinated effort to check
the impact on _all_ tasks instead of just the Gnome desktop task and
maybe filing bugs to fix the most problematic Recommends.

At the very least the impact on or consequences for debian-cd should have
been discussed *before* the change was made.

It's one thing to say that something is premature, but the previous
 situation was just a deadlock.

There have been improvements of the use of Recommends during Lenny. Maybe
not as many as needed, but still.

debootstrap is a slightly odd case (because it's also used to construct
explicitly minimal systems, in which case the rules seem different) and
I've long been unsure about how it should behave. Maybe it just needs
 an option for it.

I can agree to some extend with debootstrap although you could also argue
that we should be consistent, maybe with an expert option to
_consistently_ ignore Recommends for those who want a bare minimal
install.

IMO there is no justification to treat packages installed by
base-installer or other components using apt-install differently from
those installed by tasksel.

Yes, this is not clear. Configuration program means the Debconf part
of console-setup.

Typing yes keeps the config, but every update it complains (this is
the second time, before it was with 1.37).

This is not intentional behaviour and it needs to be fixed.

So adding support for such new function would be nice. Thanks.

Thanks for reporting these three problems. :)

cdebconf needs a package split (or possibly more than one) so that the
gtk+ frontend is optional, along with it's dependencies.

The package split has happened but the default package still depends on
GTK+ as it still contains the gtk frontend which needs to be optional
to allow use of cdebconf within a buildd chroot.

libglib2.0-0, libcairo2, libfontconfig1, libfreetype6, libgtk2.0-0 and
libatk1.0-0 are all unwanted for a debconf replacement. Currently,
cdebconf-gtk cannot be installed alongside cdebconf anyway
because ./usr/lib/cdebconf/frontend/gtk.so exists in both and Replaces
is not used (hence the bump in severity). (libglib2.0-0 itself isn't
that bad though, overall, as pkg-config and gettext both use it.)

Bug#535784: Bug seems to be more general

2009-07-06 Thread Andreas Schlager
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

After trying out some more configurations I think this issue is more
general than only related to encrypted fs.

Actual I've following partitions:
Disk /dev/hdb: 32.0 GB, 32078036992 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3899 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x12641263

/dev/hdb31242270011719417+ 5 Extended
/dev/hdb51242270011719386 8e Linux LVM

Here the according fstab:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# file system mount point type options dump pass
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
/dev/hdb2 / xfs defaults0 1

/dev/mapper/rootvg-swaplv_crypt noneswapsw
0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

The / filesystem is now located on /dev/hdb2 and is not a encrypted
filesystem any more.

When I try to boot the kernel-panic message I get is exactly the same,
only the major/minor number of the filsystem has changed in the output.

So I think the problem is not related with encrypted filesystems - it
seems to be of a more general nature.

Kind regards,

OK. I think we need to make a new round of checks to see whether there

consider them. I can start with a list of things in meta-gnome2, but
there are also some indirect recommends.

   * gnome-games-extra-data : 4 MB download, its utility is purely
visual. Nothing more, nothing less. I don’t know if it’s worth
the deal, but it’s not as if disk space was expensive these
 days.

My opinion of this has not changed since last time.

   * epiphany-extensions-more : small and really nice to have.

There are some useful things in there; I am never sure about the real
value of adding extensions which still have to be manually enabled to the
default install; it does ease discovery some. I suspect a lot of people
who want to use extensions will use iceweasel though.

   * gnome-office (abiword, gimp, gnumeric, xsane, inkscape,
planner) : the main problem with this one is that we get to ship
two word processors and two spreadsheets. I’m already not fond
of shipping two browsers. OTOH they both have some features and
GNOME integration that OOo doesn’t have.

I think it's bad enough we install two browsers and we should avoid two
office suites.

Note that xsane and inkscape are already included in the gnome-desktop task;
gimp is in the desktop task.

   * gnome-accessibility (at-spi, dasher, gnome-mag, gok, gnome-orca,
 mousetweaks, gnome-accessibility-themes) : I think it’s better
to have this by default, but the size impact is not negligible.

It is in fact already included in the gnome-desktop task.

You may also want to pick at this list from the task:

# The complete gnome environment, with selected extras.
# TODO: Everything in list below should be moved to its Depends/Recommends.

# add gnome support for iceweasel, which is pulled in via the main desktop task

Bug#532515: handling of Recommends (was: on making decisions vs letting things happen)

We have a whole release cycle to sort this out now.

IMO the special handling of Recommends in D-I
so far was justified, especially as we did consciously compensate for not
installing Recommends by default by adding them to the task definitions
in cases where they were really needed/wanted.

I seemed to be approximatly the only one doing that, and am inactive though..

I feel that the change could have been discussed more before being
implemented in tasksel, possibly with some coordinated effort to check
the impact on _all_ tasks instead of just the Gnome desktop task and
maybe filing bugs to fix the most problematic Recommends.

Yes, a non-inactive person to handle this in tasksel would have done
much better than me.

The problem is that I doubt this will happen as ATM basically nothing is

in bugs or regressions for which nobody is taking any responsibility.

Yes, a non-inactive person to handle this in tasksel would have done

As a general comment, not as a personal attack: IMHO this kind of change
really should not be made unless one is willing to follow up on it.

The same goes for the switch to c-s and the switch to grub2. Pushing for
implementing changes just because they are on some ToDo or release goals
list without being willing to take any responsibility for the change and
even do a basic review and testing is a sure way to lower the quality of
D-I.

The same also goes for proposing patches: if you're not even willing to
test your own patches, then don't start on them.

[patch] netcfg get_all_ifs()

2009-07-06 Thread Luca Favatella
This patch substitutes Linux-specific code in get_all_ifs() using getifaddrs().

I tested this patch on (linux-)i386 trunk monolithic.
It builds and seems to work without regressions.
I only tested on default qemu, and the network seems to behave as
usual (I didn't complete the installation, but it seems to
download/unpack/configure downloaded packages).

I tested this patch in a draft hackish port of netcfg on kfreebsd-i386
(see d-i kfreebsd branch), and it builds.
netcfg is not working on kfreebsd-i386, but at least now it creates a
saner /etc/network/interfaces (i.e. with ed0, not eth0).

Cheers,
Luca Favatella

P.S.
At the moment I'm trying to port netcfg on GNU/kFreeBSD.
If reading the code of netcfg you find some Linux-specific code that
could be easily rewritten to be more portable (at least on GNU/k*BSD),
please try to get it in trunk or drop me a patch.

[D-I] Please test Debian Installer with console-setup (2nd version)

2009-07-06 Thread Christian Perrier
A *second version* of test D-I images with console-setup replacing
kbdchooser has been built.

It includes several recent fixes and evolutions for console-setup
udebbased on the invaluable contributions by testers, particularly
Frans Pop.

I would appreciate if these images could be tested, particularly in
various languages. It is suggested to test localized installations of
a standard system, not necessarily with X, and check whether things
work as expected on the installed system (particularly display at the
console as well as the keymap used in the console).

Please note that there have been *very few* tests of all this and it
is then expected that you find bugs..:-)

If you provide feeback, please do so by answering to this mail,
keeping both lists CC'ed (but *don't* CC me as I read both lists!).

[patch] installer ufs initrd support (how to create a ufs filesystem as a normal user?)

2009-07-06 Thread Luca Favatella
This patch adds ufs initrd support.
It was in the previous d-i kfreebsd branch, so thanks to Robert Millan.

This code has the bad thing that mkfs.ufs must be executed as root,
and I don't know how to create a ufs filesystem on kfreebsd without
being root.
Comments on how to create a ufs filesystem as a normal user?

I use this on kfreebsd-i386.

Cheers,
Luca Favatella
