Bug#552584: file-in-usr-local /usr/local/etc

2009-10-27 Thread Manoj Srivastava
Package: rootskel-gtk
Version: 1.16
Severity: serious
User: lintian-ma...@debian.org
Usertags: file-in-usr-local

Justification: The package installs a file in /usr/local/... which is not
allowed.

The package should not be looking into /usr/loca/etc, anyway. The site admin
already has a location to add site specific configuration: /etc.

Refer to Debian Policy Manual section 9.1.2 (Site-specific programs) for
details.

,[ 9.1.2 Site-specific programs ]
| As mandated by the FHS, packages must not place any files in /usr/local,
either
| by putting them in the file system archive to be unpacked by dpkg or by
| manipulating them in their maintainer scripts.
|
| However, the package may create empty directories below /usr/local so that the
| system administrator knows where to place site-specific files. These are not
| directories in /usr/local, but are children of directories in /usr/local.
These
| directories (/usr/local/*/dir/) should be removed on package removal if they
are
| empty.

Bug#552576: live-installer: should have a Standards-Version field

2009-10-27 Thread Frans Pop
Package: live-installer
Version: 13
Severity: serious

The live-installer source package not only has a udeb, but also a deb. This
means that it must also have a Standards-Version field in debian/control.
Only source packages that have *only* udebs are allowed to omit that field.

Bug#552563: auto-create preseed.cfg file

2009-10-27 Thread martin f krafft
Package: debian-installer
Version: 20091026-1
Severity: wishlist
Usertags: debianbook

Since debconf-get-selections is not the appropriate way to create
preseed.cfg files, but d-i should know what keys to save (or not to
save), why not extend d-i so that it automatically drops
a preseed.cfg file into /root (next to the installation-report
template), just in case the user is interested or would like to use
that file?

Thanks,

Bug#552560: locale selection incomplete

2009-10-27 Thread martin f krafft
Package: debian-installer
Version: 20091026-1
Severity: wishlist
Usertags: debianbook

I chose English/Switzerland in the language & country selection
dialogs, and d-i then offered only the en_US locales. Arguably,
there should be en_CH, given the international orientation of
Switzerland, but while that does not exist, en_GB would be a better
match for Switzerland.

Next upstream release of GRUB (1.97~beta5) will have its kFreeBSD loader
renamed (from "freebsd" to "kfreebsd") to reflect that it is loading the
kernel of FreeBSD rather than FreeBSD itself. Since GRUB 1.96 didn't
include a kFreeBSD loader at all, there's no backward compatibility in
this change.

Attached patch modifies build/boot/kfreebsd/grub-kfreebsd-*.cfg to use
the new interface. Please let us know when it is appropiate for us to
upload the new version. We can coordinate through IRC or whichever way
you prefer.

Ah, it seems a test for this was indeed added in Lintian in the not too
distant past. That also explains why [1] shows "unused override" for many
of our packages for that tag.

Note that both live-installer and userdevfs are listed on the page and
*are* D-I packages.

live-installer also has a deb, and thus _should_ have a standards version.
I'll file a BR.

userdevfs only has a udeb, so that looks like a bug somewhere.
Ah, I see the reason. Current version in the archive uses XB-Package-Type
instead of XC-Package-Type. But that has already been corrected in SVN, so
should get resolved with the next upload.

Thanks for the reply Joerg. Guess I'll also drop all the no longer needed
overrides for our packages.

Cheers,
FJP

Thats just because I didnt copy the very latest version of it over to

Frank, as our lintian interface :), said that lintian should detect it
runs on/with udebs and then disable checks that make no sense for udebs.
So if lintian warns for such packages as udebs about things udebs dont
actually have to follow, that should probably adapted there, though we
can easily move tags if its not possible to detect in lintian.

Now, in this case there is no need to move it, as looking at
http://lintian.debian.org/tags/no-standards-version-field.html shows
that we do not see any of the D-I packages, so I assume lintian is
detecting it properly nd we do not need to move it.

Should an upload fail because of this and/or lintian behaving funnily we
can still look at it then, but I assume it wont.

Looks like it's named "nowayout".

Please move "no-standards-version-field" to "wayout".

Because udebs don't follow loads of policy requirements (which is allowed
because of their nature), and because that makes blindly updating the
standards version with policy updates a rather meaningless job, the D-I
team has removed the standards version fields from most source packages
that produce only udebs; they include a lintian override for that.

So having that tag in nowayout would mean that uploads of udebs will start
failing massively.

I have worked on some patch to clean-up the code, and fix buggy
package removal behaviour. I'll merge them by tomorrow evening.

I have two feature request that are pending, and I need your help:

Using local repository (requested by fjp)

I wondered how to address this. I now think it would be possible if
the images where structured like this (we can switch arch and dist
folder hierarchy):

 .
 |`-i386
 ||`-lenny
 ||  |`netboot.tar.gz
 ||  ` MD5SUMS
 ||`-daily-2009-10-28
 ||  |`netboot.tar.gz
 ||  ` MD5SUMS
 | `-daily-2009-10-28
 | |`netboot.tar.gz
 | ` MD5SUMS
  `-amd64
  |`-lenny
  | |`netboot.tar.gz
  | ` MD5SUMS
   `-daily-2009-10-28
 |`netboot.tar.gz
 ` MD5SUMS

Does it suite your needs?
(That could be used to ship netboot in Debian-Live CDs)

Allow preseeding using TFTP (reqested by Otavio)
---
1. Is it possible to simply concatenate multiple tar.gz files?
2. Is it possible to simply concatenate multiple tar in one .gz files?
3. Or is it possible to pass multiple "initrd=" to a given Kernel?
4. Or Do I have to modify the tar.gz files.

The above scheme could also be used to include/embedded firmware

Installation Guide: please commit pending changes

2009-10-27 Thread Frans Pop
Hi,

I'm currently preparing the patches to drop the arches alpha and m68k from
the Installation Guide. The plan is to update both the English version and
all translations. The changes are not huge, but they affect a fairly large
number of files.

If you have pending changes, then please commit them ASAP to avoid
conflicts after I commit my changes.

If you do not have any pending changes, then I would suggest to postpone
doing translation updates until after I have committed my changes.

Cheers,
FJP

Note that the powerpc issue is not for the buildd admin (although it's
possible that needs updating too).
