Problems with installation from usb-stick / preseeding grub installation device
Hi! I'm preseeding d-i boot to install lenny on several (identical) boxes we just got. Since I'm still in the play with the preseed file and see what's possible-phase I'm often changing the preseeding file, so I boot from usb-stick. So far it works splendid, many thanks. However, I have a problem similar to #516280: During installation the usb stick is /dev/sda and the target hard disc /dev/sdb. grub get's installed to the mbr of /dev/sda; grub's menu.lst contains (hd1,0) and the generated fstab refer to /dev/sdb as well. So after the installation, the System is unbootable without the stick. Since I only want to install to identical systems, I tried to workaround the problem by running a script via preseed/late_command, to fixi fstab and menu.lst in /target. That works (well; it's a dirty hack, but it works), but I fail to get grub installed into the mbr of the hard disc. Grub always ended up in the boot record of the usb-stick (/dev/sda or (hd0)). I tried to preseed grub-installer/bootdev to enforce installation to the hard disc, but somehow it always get's ignored. So far I tried the following: d-i grub-installer/bootdev string (hd1) d-i grub-installer/bootdev string /dev/sdb d-i grub-installer/bootdev string (hd1,0) grub get's always installed to the usb-stick at (hd0) / /dev/sda. I can verify that by looking in /var/log/installer/syslog after the installation: Dec 2 12:56:19 grub-installer: info: Installing grub on '(hd0)' Dec 2 12:56:19 grub-installer: info: grub-install supports --no-floppy Dec 2 12:56:19 grub-installer: info: Running chroot /target grub-install --no-floppy --recheck (hd0) I also looked at /var/log/installer/cdebconf/questions.dat, which contains the following: Name: grub-installer/bootdev Template: grub-installer/bootdev Value: (hd1) Owners: d-i, grub-installer Flags: seen Variables: ID = grub-installer/bootdev So I guess, that I actually do preseed the variable, but for some reasons it get's ignored. Has someone an idea what I'm doing wrong? Beside the bootdev I only pressed a grub passwort hash and set grub-installer/only_debian to true (which as I understand only avoids the confirmation of the installation, right?) What needs to be done to get those drivers included? After some searching, I found this commit that seems it should add the drivers: http://svn.debian.org/viewsvn/d-i/trunk/packages/kernel/linux-kernel-di-powerpc-2.6/modules/powerpc-powerpc64/scsi-extra-modules?r1=48552r2=57888 That change doesn't seem to be in the daily build I tested though. Can anyone explain? -Goeff hello, while the changes may have not been committed to cd or dvd media, the changes are in place for the netboot images. I tried the netboot image anywhere between the 10th and 20th of november. I can't recall the exact date but It was a squeeze build. I had no problems with the installation execpt that it couldn't install or find the correct kernel to install. As a result, no kernel was installed. It should install the linux-2.6-powerpc64 kernel package. The installation completes successfully otherwise. After this, I have to revert to using kboot because I have to enter custom command to boot the newly installed system from usb stick. Then I can proceed to install the linux-image-2.6-powerpc64 package and create yaboot.conf to boot the system normally. I downloaded the dvd powerpc weekly build from nov 30 and see how that goes. The strangest thing about debian is that once it is installed, it runs very well better than ubuntu on the ps3 in my opinion. The thing is that ubuntu has support for the ps3 while debian doesn't officialy support installation on the ps3. _ Chat with Messenger straight from your Hotmail inbox. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowslive/hotmail_bl1/hotmail_bl1.aspx?ocid=PID23879::T:WLMTAGL:ON:WL:en-ww:WM_IMHM_4:092009

Debian 5.0.3 businesscard install with unstable/sid. 1. Partition hard drives, Clock/timezone setup, and User/password setup completed *without* problems. However, upon boot (see below) a _disk check_ (both volumes) was initiated due to a last mount time in the future. Indeed, the system clock is now one hour late (set time by ntp and clock *not* at GMT). This itself is a minor problem, but the _root account was disabled_, even though I allowed root logins and set a root password. My solution: $ fsck /dev/hdb1 $ reboot $ fsck /dev/hdc1 $ passwd -u root $ passwd root $ ^D 2. *grub2 install failed* during the install process. (Seems to be an incompatibility between debian-installer and a changed syntax in the grub package. I do not remember the exact text, but vt4 showed a command-line option error message.) In order to boot the system, I had to manually type at the grub prompt: grub insmod ext2 grub set root=(hd1,1) grub linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-1-686 root=/dev/hda1 ro single grub initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-1-686 grub boot To fix the system, after fixing the file systems and the root login (see above), I had to take the following steps: $ apt-get install os-prober (even though the installation process had indicated finding the dual boot) $ update-grub This, finally, gave me a working, installed system.
