And i386 should FTBFS because i386/cdrom/isolinux.cfg still has a line

I tested it in amd64 only. If someone can test it in another arches
(i386 and powerpc) it would be nice.

You could easily test i386 yourself. Setting up a sid/i386 chroot in which
you can build D-I on your amd64 machine is trivial.

In an earlier mail you wrote:

But the changelog says:

There is a significant chance that fixing the backend will take more than
a very small period, so I still feel that disabling (commenting) things
would be a lot better than removing them.

Besides that you're being inconsistent as you do have:

Comments/Problems:

Used the USB image with the businesscard CD ISO. Only problem was
booting: I had to partition my USB stick, install an MBR, and then
i dd-ed the HD img over /dev/sda1, rather than starting at sector 0
of the ``physical device.'' Also ran syslinux -s for good measure

After that, installing using the copper ethernet went fine. (Wire-
less required installing a non-free firmware package.)

Very nice job; thanks

Comments/Problems:

1)
If I try to select no localization, continent--Europe, country--Germany,
then I end up in an endless menu loop. If I use America, USA instaed, then
I can select between en_US and C in the following menu (as expected).

Would it be possible to keep localization optional for _all_ countries? Its
apita, anyway.

2)
Due to wrong localization settings I am not allowed to select CET (or
Europe/Berlin) in tzdata setup, either. I just get a restricted list of
time zones to choose from (valid only in the US, as it seems). I would prefer
to simply enter CET on the keyboard, at least for expert mode.

3)
Aptitude shows that most packages were explicitly selected for install.
d-i should make use of package dependencies instead, esp. for the lib*
packages.

libunwind7-dev was installed by default. I would guess this is obsolete
for a base system.

4)
I would prefer if grub doesn't include os-prober by default.

Regards

Harri

This is a bad bug in the current version of localechooser. I'll fix it
ASAP.

 2)
Due to wrong localization settings I am not allowed to select CET (or
Europe/Berlin) in tzdata setup, either. I just get a restricted list
of time zones to choose from (valid only in the US, as it seems).

This is a consequence of the first issue, not a separate issue. You should
be able to select Germany and that would automatically result in the
correct timezone.

 3)
Aptitude shows that most packages were explicitly selected for install.
d-i should make use of package dependencies instead, esp. for the lib*
 packages.

This is a consequence of how debootstrap works and not an installer issue.
I'm not sure that it can be fixed in debootstrap as one of the core
attributes of debootstrap is that it sets up a base system *without* the
use of package management tools.

libunwind7-dev was installed by default. I would guess this is obsolete
 for a base system.

The problem seems to be that the package has Priority: standard and thus
gets installed automatically. Please file a separate bug report against
libunwind7-dev as this is not a D-I issue.

 4)
I would prefer if grub doesn't include os-prober by default.

This is a decision by the grub maintainers that is out of the hands of D-I
developers. Please discuss it with them (or on debian-devel).

Cheers,
FJP

Regards

Harri

Removal of cramfs support

2009-12-05 Thread Bastian Blank
Hi folks

I intent to remove the cramfs support from the kernel and the
cramfsprogs package. Current kernels supports squashfs, which is a far
more advanced replacement.

It is currently in use by the debian-installer for mips and the powerpc
floppies.

Re: [RFC] Patch to disable GTK in installer images

2009-12-05 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello all,

Here goes the patch for last review before I commit it.

After think about what Frans said, that it can take longer before we
have g-i working again, I followed his suggestion and went further and
redoing the patch commenting the stuff out instead of dropping it.

I got a machine with disk space to build cowbuilder chroots for amd64
and i386, so I tested both builds.

I also found a broken in my previous patch regarding hd-media for
amd64 (and as consequence for i386) that is fixed as well.

Cheers,

This is wrong: you're already building the cdrom target (and AFAIK
build_cdrom isn't even a valid target). The EXTRATARGETS line for gtk just
needs to be commented out.

Also, I now see a similar change for amd64/cdrom/isolinux.cfg is missing.

I'll try to test the patch later.

cramfsprogs is still used by some for embedded systems, and the kernel
module can still be useful when examining such an embedded image.

This isn't really about including any isolinux stuff, but simply about
referencing the closest newt-frontend equivalents of current gtk-frontend
references. That simply gives the smallest risk of breakage from disabling
the gtk targets. Maybe it's not strictly needed, but it is also least
likely to do harm.

If cramfs, won't removing it (cramfs) make those two installation

I downloaded debian-40r8-i386-businesscard.iso, but installation end
up with Lenny instead of Etch.

The problem is, that installer in expert mode gives me options
stable/testing/unstable
and even if i try to create /target/etc/apt/sources.list with etch references
i will end up with lenny.

I just wanted to play with Zimbra, which is supported only on Etch. So
thats the reason for oldstable. If this is not my fault i guess it's
not worth for fixing so wouldn't be better to remove all oldstable's
businesscard isos, so people wouldn't get confused and rather download
netinstall/CD1/DVD1?

 - improved support for mirror that only have codename directories, such as
   archive.debian.org;
 - support for mirrors that don't have codename directories (but use suite
   names as directories);
 - various code cleanups.
Many thanks to Jérémy Bobbio for reviewing the changes.
