Comments/Problems:

Everything seems OK. Random notes:
- Installation used Ethernet
- Bluetooth can see another device
- I did try a graphical install with an ISO from a few days previous, which was
OK other than the resolution seeming to be set at 800x600 (a guess)
- Installing the desktop task filled up the 4G disk with the root filesystem.
The installer said that the select and install step had failed, but it would
have been nice to say why

Thank you all for the work put into this.

I booted from usb stick (which was presented as /dev/sda) on a hardware
raid (/dev/sdb). After the system was successfully installed, the
bootloader was installed to the mbr of /dev/sda (the usb stick), not my
hard disc (/dev/sdb).

Of course the system didn't booted, when the usb stick was removed, also,
it didn't boot, when I inserted the stick again, just displaying GRUB
(IIRC). When I prepared d-i again on the stick, booted again into rescue
mode and installed grub into /dev/sdb the system boots as expected.

Can you please recheck with a current daily image. I believe this

It would be nice to have a confirmation from you that the issue is
indeed fixed as it does not happen on all systems and is therefore
quite hard to test. Please reopen the bug if it's not fixed on your
hardware.

You can boot into rescue mode and reinstall grub. But this does not do
100% the same thing as if grub-installer is run during a normal
installation.

Running expert mode won't help as it does not let you run the
bootloader step before you install the system. If you don't mind
fiddling with the installer state you can boot the installer and
manually set bootstrap base to the configured state, mount the
partitions at the right place and then you should be able to run
grub-installer again.

The most reliable test is to do a complete reinstall to an empty
partition. This would leave your existing installation intact.

Bug#605579: Use mirror as a default hostname for a manually-chosen mirror?

2010-12-01 Thread Steve McIntyre
Package: choose-mirror
Severity: wishlist
Tags: d-i

Hi guys,

On my network (and many others I've used), if there is a local mirror
it will often be called mirror. Any chance we could change the
default for a local mirror hostname from to mirror please?

Yes, I'm lazy and want to reduce the typing effort when I'm testing CD
releases... :-)

Bug#605581: installation-reports: Successfull install, some problems after booting

2010-12-01 Thread System Manager
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

At end of installation other operation systems found on the host showed Ubuntu
10.04, that is
indeed installed. But at boot GRUB menu did not show it, only the normal and
recovery boot
choises for Debian just installed.

When using the installed system interactive use, like writing this report in
nano editor or writing
on bash command line is unresponsive. Most of the time all is fine but quite
often a slight delay
appears and I type two or three keypresses which do not show immediately, but
come as a burst
after about 1-2 seconds. I can not see any load on the machine, can not guess
where this annoying
delay comes from. Happened about ten times when typing this paragraph.

The existing Ubuntu install is on disk partition /dev/sda2. It is a primary

bootable, so it is an error that Debian Installer did not add it to boot menu.

Okay, I'll try to do that tomorrow, when I got a new disc.

Bug#605401: debian-installer-launcher: d-i window does not account for GNOME pannels and window decoration

I have built a live-cd with an installer included, but
whenever I start debian installer I cannot see any buttons,
since d-i window is intended to be ran in fullscreen mode
with no gnome pannels (e.g. taskbar), nor window decoration present.

As such it becomes impossible to progress forward through the installation
unless I manage to position the d-i window to hide window decoration
 and pannels.

It will be easier to understand the issue with an image. Can you attach an
image that shows what is happening?

Debian squeeze testing install fails with undefined video mode number 314.
I noticed that the boot parameter vga is set to vga=788.
On debian 5.0, this variable is set to vga=normal, and the install works
fine. When I press tab and set vga to vga=normal on debian squeeze, the
 install works fine.
Perhaps vga should be set to vga=normal by default instead of vga=788?

vga=788 is 800x600 16bit color.

In the BIOS setup in the menu Intergrated Devices (LegacySelect Options)
Please check on Onboard Video Buffer if you have only 1 MB, if so change it
to 8 MB.

Hi,

I'm the maintainer of pm-utils.

With KMS being available for all major drivers, radeontool and vbetool
have become mostly obsolete. Besides, that pm-utils uses those tools is an
implementation detail and it should be up to the pm-utils package to
depend on those packages (it currently still recommends vbetool, and d-i
installs recommends by default)

Please consider removing vbetool and radeontool from the laptop task.

Michael

Package: debian-installer-manual
Severity: normal

The recommended size for the root partition in Appendix C.2 (150-250
MB) should probably be reassessed in light of the fact that current
Linux kernel packages are quite large (around 44 MB for
linux-image-2.6.15-1-686).

When upgrading to a newer kernel version it may be necessary to have
at least two kernels installed simultaneously, so this alone takes up
90 MB on the root filesystem.

This exact problem has been reported by a user with a 200 MB root
partition:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-swedish/2006/01/msg00043.html (in
Swedish).

Very likely, thanks for the pointer. However, this should be solved with

Can you try again?

Thanks for your report.

I would like to be able to configure debian-installer to log messages to a

installation is complete but it would be convenient for me to be able to

Bug#605640: apt-setup: Using squeeze-updates for volatile

2010-12-01 Thread Adam D. Barratt
Package: apt-setup
Version: 0.49
Tags: patch

Hi,

Starting with the squeeze release, the volatile repository will be
replaced by the $dist-updates suite, which will be carried on the
standard ftp.d.o mirrors instead of residing on volatile.d.o.

As discussed on IRC, please find attached a patch that adds support for
this to apt-setup. This has been tested using the November 29th weekly
d-i ISO with the updated udebs for apt-setup injected in to it (and
generators/90services-select hacked so that volatile was selectable for
an install of testing) and a standard (i.e. non-expert mode) install.

Also as discussed, I've not touched the debconf templates whilst
preparing the patch. This does mean that the on-screen text does not
quite match what actually happens, but that's preferable to Christian
hunting me down. :-)

There is an issue with the patch, in that it doesn't handle installs
where no network mirror has been selected; I thought it was better to
have the patch available as-is though. Suggestions for how to handle
that case welcome.

Regards,

Adam

Squeeze RC1, amd64, XTS

2010-12-01 Thread Ryan C. Underwood

Is there a specific reason why XTS encryption is not enabled in the
kernel on the amd64 RC1 squeeze netinst CD? Please Cc:, not subscribed.

At first I made / too small and it failed much later during the
installation of the kernel image. Debian kernels are HUGE
compared to my usual build-to-fit custom kernel.
It would be good if the installer would know the size requirement
for all the usual mountpoints people use and check if the defined
partitions have sufficient space. The numbers should be known for at
least the standard task, more would be better.

This may also be a wishlist.

 Why against base-installer?

I would have thought partman and/or tasksel would have to do this.

This wishlist is a chimera, imho. The best (or less worse) we can do
is in partman-auto and have reasonable decent sizes there. Everything
else is too dependent on user choices (or even the current
*installation languages*, or the architecture...or the installation
media... that imagining we'll find a solution to warn users when they
create too small partitionsfor something they don't even have
chosen already (what to install) is just science-fiction.

You can warn during partitioning if there isn't even space for the
standard task. As for size differences for each architecture you can
know those. Install media should not matter. Filesystem type and
blocksize might to some degree but you can add some safety margin to the
warning. As to the users choices, like later selecting gnome or kde, you
can then give a warning.

The important point is to prevent the download of all the debs just to
fail at 90%.

It is enough if it covers the basic mountpoints like /usr and /var the
installer already knows as common mountpoints. If the user does
something too complicated, like having /usr/lib or /usr/share seperate
then he probably knows what he is doing. The check doesn't need to be
perfect. It just needs to catch the obvious cases.
