This should fix itself once both tasksel 2.88 and gnome-core 1:2.30+7
reach testing. Should happen by monday, would appreciate any testing you
 can do.

Both migrated during yesterday's britney run, fwiw.

Hi,

I moved a bit again.

using fakeroot fakechroot make build_monolithic the error turns into

Is it possible that it is because of missing bin/bash in chrooted dir

Bug#581687: Device naming scheme changed from GRUB to GRUB2

I noticed that, as of installer beta2, this bug is still not fixed.
I am not an expert, but yet I would like to draw your attention to
the fact that from lenny to squeeze Debian switched from using GRUB
to using GRUB2. GRUB2 now uses a different device numbering scheme
than GRUB used. It seems to me that the explanation in the
installer was written for GRUB and was forgotten to be rewritten in
order to reflect the different device numbering scheme of GRUB2.

Grub2 uses a different numbering scheme for partitions, not devices.
See:
http://grub.enbug.org/Manual#head-db861a16884db1252847a6ce554b625974134d7e

 The template is:

 Template: grub-installer/bootdev
 Type: string
 # :sl2:
_Description: Device for boot loader installation:
You need to make the newly installed system bootable, by installing
the GRUB boot loader on a bootable device. The usual way to do this
is to install GRUB on the master boot record of your first hard
drive. If you prefer, you can install GRUB elsewhere on the drive, or
to another drive, or even to a floppy.
  .
The device can be specified using GRUB's (hdn,m) notation, or as a
device in /dev. Below are some examples:
   - (hd0) or /dev/hda will install GRUB to the master boot record
 of your first hard drive (IDE);
   - (hd0,1) or /dev/hda2 will use the second partition of your
 first IDE drive;
   - (hd2,4) or /dev/sdc5 will use the first extended partition of
 your third drive (SCSI here);
   - (fd0) or /dev/fd0 will install GRUB to a floppy.

I'm not 100% sure of what should be changedpreferrably in a way
that doesn't affect translations. My understanding is that we should
replace (hd0,1) by (hd0,2) and (hd2,4) by (hd2,5) as only partitions
 numbering changed. Am I right?

So, I would say yes, you're right.

Bug#606976: Kernel panic with Squeeze (AMD64) d-i beta 2

2010-12-16 Thread Ferenc Wagner
tag 606976 +moreinfo
thanks

Taro Sato ubu...@gmail.com writes:

I've tried d-i beta 2 on Dell XPS 630i. I first tried creating a USB
memory stick with the installer .iso on it (following a standard
procedure); the install USB stick works on my other computer (Lenovo
T410s). However, on 630i it always fails at the beginning of the
install process. The message, when kernel panics, typically goes like
 this:

... (no apparent error messages thru this point) ...
 [0.597991] List of all partitions:
[0.600310] No filesystem could mount root, tried:
[0.602749] Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
 unknown-block(8,3)
... (call trace output after this) ...

(This output is from an attempt to use CD install medium.)

Hi,

I have to say that all of this looks very much out of place. First of
all, the boot menu should start the kernel with the quiet parameter,
so you should see no messages before the kernel panic.

 1. Did you edit the command line in the boot loader or by any other
means?

 2. What was your exact sequence of actions after powering on your
computer with the CD in the drive?

The above message indicates that no initramfs was loaded with the
kernel, or maybe it was corrupt. If you didn't remove the quiet
parameter from the kernel command line, you'd see the message

Initramfs unpacking failed: junk in compressed archive

in the latter case.

 3. What messages do you get with the quiet parameter?

You could also try writing the mini.iso downloaded from
http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/mini.iso
to a pendrive and test that. If you pendrive (the full device) is
/dev/sdb, then just do

cat mini.iso /dev/sdb

and try to boot from the pendrive. This is very similar to the method
used for HD media, except that boot.img.gz is compressed.

Is there any way to get Squeeze d-i to work on this machine?

There should be. Please do the above tests and report back to help us
find out how.

Feri.

Hi,

Thanks for the detailed but to-the-point report. This may be a kernel,
a udev or a partman issue. Could you please try backing out of the
partitioning menu to the main menu, start a shell in the installer
environment with the appropriate menu item and do the partitioning
yourself by fdasd or whatever's needed? Then please check if the new
partitions show up in /proc/partitions and under /dev. This would help
us narrowing down the case.

All grub iso disk images I obtained, are from I believe to be the
original source Uri's and I MD5SUM checked.

The Boot Sector Virus Protection has been enabled during 'Debian
Squeeze di Beta2' install
and has been disabled during my latest install attempts. Transguard v?
I think. I will check.
BSVP is currently OFF (disabled) with no difference to the symptom.
Yes, I know I must and want to, enable protection eventually.
I will look deeper into this separate BSVP issue later. I have no data
on this machine.

Partitions: During a successful squeeze-di-Beta2-i386 install up until
the auto re boot.

begining of disk space)
sda # 3 primary 99.5gb Bootable Format ext3/boot (
end of disk space)

I believe swap space should come first (quickest to get to) especially
on a small RAM machine.
if it starts swapping you want swap to be quick to get to. Thrash me
if I am wrong.

This should fix itself once both tasksel 2.88 and gnome-core 1:2.30+7
reach testing. Should happen by monday, would appreciate any testing you
  can do.

Both migrated during yesterday's britney run, fwiw.

tasksel 2.88 with gnome-core 1:2.30+7 still wants to install ~2.5GiB
packages. But maybe that includes things that tasksel would be happy not
to install if it wasn't available on CD1?

Please approve (udeb) and unblock package kbd:

As discussed in #606186, users are currently asked for their keyboard
layout twice during the installation process; this is particularly
annoying considering that the second question, in general, has no effect
 on the installed system.

Unblocked after an ack from Otavio on #debian-release; thanks.

Bug#605983: installation-report: PXE installation of HP Mini fails in partman step because network setup is lost

2010-12-16 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Joey Hess]
Attached patch implements that. Please test.

I managed to get hold of the HP Mini again, and tested the svn version
of check-missing-firmware.sh. The version solved the problem, and the
PXE installation no longer failed because the network settings were
lost. :)

Now it failed because of an Invalid Release siganture (key id
9AA38DCD55BE302B) when running debootstrap. Might be caused by old
boot images, or something else. Do not have time to investigate
today.

Vennlig hilsen,

Comments/Problems:

Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.
When I booted the installation from the CD I had set debconf/priority to low
and after the base system I went into console two and chrooted into /target and
set debconf/priority to low and also changed the adduser to not have system
wide readible home directories. When I tried to install X windows as well as
the standard system I got the selection of what pam modules needed to be chosen
and no matter which one or ones I selected the installation would not let me
continue saying no pam profiles could be selected I put spaces in front of the
numbers like with all of the other installation prompts that can be handled
this way. After the installation when running tasksel and installing all tasks
on the system I still got this same issue and had to boot into single user mode
as booting into normal mode caused the system to freeze as I could not just
kill aptitude as there was a lock that would not go away. When I rebooted into
single user mode I ran dpkg --reconfigure -a and se
lected unix authentication when the pam prompt came up and everything worked
fine but still this should be fixed as I would have liked to install X windows
as well as all other tasks during the initial installation and not have to
reboot more then once to finish the installation.
