installer logo change

2011-02-04 Thread adam balogh
Dear installer team,

Please do not use red stars resembling kommunism as logos in debian distros.
I hate kommunism, I do not want to hate Debian.
The starting screen of Squeze installer includes many red stars, removing which
is troublesome for a newbie.
Finally if I can manage removing it, can I still call it Debian Squeeze?

Regards,
Adam Balogh

ps.: I will send a copy of the edited image for you to change for it in the
distro

Bug#611951: Default GNOME desktop installation has both xsane *and* simple-scan

2011-02-04 Thread Christian PERRIER
Quoting Michael Biebl (bi...@debian.org):
 Package: tasksel
 Version: 2.88
 Severity: normal

 Hi,

I did a default GNOME desktop installation using the RC2 net installer.

The resulting GNOME desktop had bot xsane and simple-scan installed.

xsane is pulled in via tasksel, simple-scan is pulled in through the
 meta packages gnome and gnome-office:

 # aptitude why simple-scan
 i gnomeRecommends gnome-office (= 1:2.30+7)
 i A gnome-office Dependssimple-scan

According to Joss, meta-gnome2 is correct in this case and only
 simple-scan should be installed.

I would like to have xsane's maintainer advice on this issue. Should
we remove xsane from gnome-desktop?

(imho, if we keep it somewhere in tasksel, it more belongs to
desktop, indeed)

I'm under the feeling that xsane is kind of the reference when it
comes at image acquisition software...but installing it on each and
every default desktop install is maybe a too big hammer...

latest installer and .iso netinst image (from today 2011-02-04)
firmware on the USB stick for the RTL (firmware-realtek, 0.28)
 firmware loads fine
but dhcp is not working, no ip address

We have seen other such issues. This probably belongs to the firmware
itselfand given its non-freeness, has few chances to be fixed,
except by Realtek..:-)

Downgrading severity (the package is not unusable for everybody) and
reassigning.

Dear Webmaster,

I am a recently converted Linux user, and I have found your site
http://www.debian.org/releases/slink/i386/ch-hardware-req.en.html to be
very helpful with its informative Linux-related content.

I am writing because I wanted to let you know that you have a broken
link on the page. Try clicking on the text Linux Laptop Pages. It
leads to a page that doesn't exist anymore.

Since I use PDF a lot, I needed a tutorial on how to not only view them,
but also create and edit them in Linux. However, I could not find any
such links on your site.

In return for your helpful resource, I would like to suggest you this
page, _http://www.pdfconverter.com/resources/using-pdf-in-linux_ , which
gives excellent tips for Linux novices regarding basic PDF viewing and
creation in Linux.

Thanks again and I hope I have been able to help you out too.

XSane is complex to use and simple-scan will do for the vast majority of
desktop users.

So, do you also mean that real stars with a dominant colour that's red
should be shut down ?

Dear ${DEITY}, could you please shut down Antares, it's a communist
symbol

So, to make it clear:
- the Debian logo is a swirl
- the usually accepted symbol of communism is a hammer crossed with a
whatever it's called in English
- the Spacefun theme in Debian includes stars because it's space
- they are red because this is nice
- I don't think we'll be changing anything

It's called a sickle. The traditional symbol of communism is the
hammer and sickle, which represents the solidarity of factory
workers (the hammer) and farm workers (the sickle).

If the OP is talking about the space fun theme, I think he's off
base. I've been using it since it came out, and I never once thought
of communism.

updating 131 git repositories in ten seconds

2011-02-04 Thread Joey Hess
Noticed this trick KDE is using. Git can be configured to use
anonymous git instead of git+ssh for pulls, which allows updating
a lot of repos much faster. Pushing still happens over ssh.

To set it up:

git config --global 'url.git://git.debian.org.insteadOf'
'git+ssh://git.debian.org'
git config --global 'url.git+ssh://git.debian.org.pushInsteadOf'
'git+ssh://git.debian.org'

Now you can run `mr update` in a highly parallel mode, very quickly:

joey@gnu:~/src/d-i/packagestime mr -j30 update
9.84user 11.00system 0:10.08elapsed 206%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata
26144maxresident)k

Compare with 38 seconds using ssh with -j30, and many minutes using ssh
without -j. Ok, svn update did used to take only 2 seconds, but not bad. :)

Bonus 1: Also works for every other git repo on alioth. Probably.

Bonus 2: Those without ssh access to alioth can use this trick
to use mr without modifying d-i's .mrconfig.
