Re: help with busybox packaging
Quoting Matthew Palmer (mpal...@debian.org): Hope my proposal will be appreciated. I'm sure everyone would love if you were to get into the buglist and triage things. +1 Cristian, please feel free to provide patches, bug triage and new upstream version integration. If you're familiar with git, I think you can create your own branch and work in it (particularly when it comes at new upstream integration). subscribing to -boot is more or less mandatory, of course, as the package is team-maintained under the D-I hat. /me happy to see new people jumping in various areas of D-I. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Re: help with busybox packaging
Quoting Michael Tokarev (m...@tls.msk.ru): I asked about busybox several times, last [1] was in December after I tried to sort out some old bugs which were in BTS for years. I had two questions: how to proceed further (giving some examples) and one very small, is the work I'm doing (closing old bugs) okay. So far, I've got lots of silence, which apparently is supposed to be large enough to deal with :( We were probably more focused on the release Since that, the release happenedand busybox maintenance went under git, so I think that the situation changed significantly enough for you guys to be able to jump in. As I just wrote, starting by proposing patches, bug triage, etc. is cerainly OK to do. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Here's my 2 cents contribution: I would like to propose the use of apt-spy to automatically determine the fastest source for network installs. This has been discussed on debian-boot before in July 2001. Maybe the time has finally come... ;-) The -a option should be used to recycle location information collected before for the timezone. (I volunteer for the boring task of writing the mapping table if someone else does the exciting task of specifying the format. ;-) e.g. timezone: Australia - apt-spy: Oceania.) apt-spy appears to be in good shape, no bugs, only wishlist items. I use it, and it works well. Install methods 'http' and 'ftp' should then be consolidated into one install method 'Internet' (apt-spy will notice if one or the other is not available, e.g. firewall), bringing the number of choices to be made down by one. Choices under the former installation methods 'ftp' and 'http' would be obsolete in the first place. I've done some testing to figure out how long it would take. I've used apt-spy -a Oceania -t [15s (default), 10s, 5s] with pretty much identical outcome, so 5s is probably fine. Here are the results: -t 15: 6:35 minutes -t 10: 3:45 minutes -t 05: 2:00 minutes Note that this could go down if apt-spy's areas would match the timezone areas. Note also that this was measured via cable modem. However, as it is _time_ based, I would assume it to be pretty much the same for analog modem. This would allow users to just choose which source method (cdrom, http, ftp, etc) and get a reasonably fast sources.list. netselect-apt, unlike apt-spy, is pretty fast at searching through the list of mirrors. In the event that even this is too slow, one could have it only select from mirrors in the same country the machine is in. Bug#591756: udeb size increase for vconfig support in busybox

Given that I am planning on putting vlan support into wheezy, if someone wanted to make an appropriate commit... grin And for a bit more information.. vconfig (vlan package) is kinda obsolete these days, iproute package took its role and extended functionality to match current kernels. What I'm trying to say is that it's probably a good idea to use more appropriate tools to start with, if the talk is not about compatibility with some old code. Busybox has iproute built-in, but its functionality is not sufficient for configuring vlan interfaces (not even 1.18). [2nd try] busybox: config options and purpose of subpackages
[Resending my email from Dec-2010. What I'd want to get is some unification and review of config options enabled, but the main question actually is: who maintains busybox nowadays? Thanks!] Hello. I wonder who/how decides to enable/disable various config options in the 3 different flavours of busybox packages. There are a lot of differences between the configs which - in my opinion - should not be there. For example: md5sum -c (check) is enabled for udeb flavour, but not for regular deb or static flavour. Udeb is supposed to be smaller, yet it contains extra feature like this, and there's no reason this particular feature should not be enabled in 2 regular flavours. Another example, -m option for tar (FEATURE_TAR_NOPRESERVE_TIME) is enabled for deb and udeb flavours but is not enabled for static flavour. Why? Long time ago modutils implementation were disabled in busybox, mostly due to their brokeness. People hoped that for etch or lenny it will come back, but it was quite some years ago. Nowadays, busybox module support is mature enough to go on-par with module-init-tools, but the applets are still disabled. Is there any particular reason for this? Debian BTS has lots of wishlist items about enabling various features, especially for the udeb flavour. And now I come to my second question: what's the purpose of busybox and 3 different flavours of the package? Should it enable all features as is done for most other packages, or just a few selected (by whom? for what?) applets/features? How the udeb is used? Is it supposed to contain some rescue tools so that one can boot from an installer CD (or even from a netboot image) and the included busybox is useful for some system maintenance? How really small it should be nowadays, when even the kernel does not fit in a floppy anymore - is there a reason to try hard to keep it small? How the static flavour is used? Is it supposed to contain everything that regular deb contains? If not, why? Regular deb and static flavours are linked against libm - for two applets, awk and dc (FEATURE_AWK_LIBM and FEATURE_DC_LIBM). Is this really necessary for something? Where dc and awk are used _and_ math support is required? I'd like to make the set of enabled features/options to be more or less the same, at least between the two regular debs (since udeb is really special as it's used by d-i only), and enable some more applets. Nowadays, busybox is almost enough to act as a complete rescue system in initramfs - everything from module loading to mounting the root filesystem is implemented and works, including nfs root, live CD and other fun stuff. Some subsystems need their own tools, for example mdadm and lvm, iscsi and similar. I even used busybox-only initramfs to fix/rescue boot problems on remote machines - boot into initramfs, bring up the network (not normally done), run nc -l -e sh and connect to this port from remote machine to perform diagnostics and to fix boot issues. All this with a busybox binary which is just a bit larger than the one currently used in Debian, but without libm (so the resulting initramfs image is smaller). I'd like to bring this functionality and flexibility to Debian. Thanks! /mjt -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? As I think I've mentioned before, changes which might affect what ends up on CD1 for any given CD set worry me, particularly given the last minute problems we had for 6.0.0 with getting the release notes on to the CDs and trying to get all of the packages required for KDE CD1 to fit on a single CD for some architectures. It is sad but I will agree with you. I will drop the branch :-( cdebconf debootstrap kernel-wedge Please include debian-installer as well, I've committed a patch targeting 6.0.1. I'd imagine this would want to be uploaded closer to the point release, or at least we'll need to rebuild it later on to pick up any further builds of lkdi-* or other udebs. cdebconf and debootstrap can go soon. installer itself neeeds lkdi. kernel-wedge I will wait a bit more to see if nothing important shows up to avoid doing another upload in a roll. -- Otavio Salvador O.S. Re: [2nd try] busybox: config options and purpose of subpackages
On Mon, Feb 14, 2011 at 11:37, Michael Tokarev m...@tls.msk.ru wrote: [Resending my email from Dec-2010. What I'd want to get is some unification and review of config options enabled, but the main question actually is: who maintains busybox nowadays? Thanks!] Debian Installer Team. Obviously there're people that usually care about the package and thus are the 'maintainers' on team. Currently those are Colin, Bastian and I. I wonder who/how decides to enable/disable various config options in the 3 different flavours of busybox packages. There are a lot of differences between the configs which - in my opinion - should not be there. Surely there's many wrong assumptions on the config handling but at same time we weren't much focused on non-d-i usage. More bellow. For example: md5sum -c (check) is enabled for udeb flavour, but not for regular deb or static flavour. Udeb is supposed to be smaller, yet it contains extra feature like this, and there's no reason this particular feature should not be enabled in 2 regular flavours. Indeed. Please enable it for them all. Another example, -m option for tar (FEATURE_TAR_NOPRESERVE_TIME) is enabled for deb and udeb flavours but is not enabled for static flavour. Why? Enable it. I agree and it would be good to 'use it' on d-i but this needs more testing and integration (probably) then just enabling it. We could leave it for a second moment after we get busybox in a better shape and you guys get used to d-i. For regular and static I'd say we could provide as most as possible but udeb is the opposite. How the udeb is used? Is it supposed to contain some rescue tools so that one can boot from an installer CD (or even from a netboot image) and the included busybox is useful for some system maintenance? How really small it should be nowadays, when even the kernel does not fit in a floppy anymore - is there a reason to try hard to keep it small? busybox is a core of d-i and provides all the coreutils used on d-i as a whole. We try to keep d-i as small as possible and that is important since we boost the installation requirements due changes on d-i. So we try to have it as small as possible. How the static flavour is used? Is it supposed to contain everything that regular deb contains? If not, why? as regular deb. Regular deb and static flavours are linked against libm - for two applets, awk and dc (FEATURE_AWK_LIBM and FEATURE_DC_LIBM). Is this really necessary for something? Where dc and awk are used _and_ math support is required? Not sure. Maks, do you know if initramfs-tools depends on those? Agreed. I'd like to bring this functionality and flexibility to Debian. Sure. So let's work torvalds this direction. IMO the best way of starting is you proposing a branch with the thing you'd like to change for merging and we review it together. Cheers, -- Otavio Salvador O.S. [PATCH 0/3] [first try] tiny busybox build system changes
Here's a very start of my attempts with busybox, in order to verify everything is set up correctly, to introduce myself, and to establish some sort of workflow. I installed a git repository on our DMZ machine (dunno if that's what meant as git branch -- since I'm - still - not a DD, I don't have access to main git.debian.org repositories), and prepared first small batch of changes (below). The repository is available as git://git.corpit.ru/debian-busybox.git , and all the changes are currently in master branch (will change if needed). I'm sending changes as patches and making them available in a git tree. As mentioned, first batch is trivial: Michael Tokarev (3): [buildsys] don't copy .dotfiles from main source to the build directories [buildsys] don't copy but link source files into build directories [buildsys] remove trailing whitespaces from debian/rules debian/rules |8 1 files changed, 4 insertions(+), 4 deletions(-) Now, I've a quite large plan to deal with current situation in busybox. For the next step, I'll prepare an annotated list of config differences between static and deb builds with suggestions of how to resolve each difference - first for stuff present in static but not present in deb, next for the reverse. This is instead of actually making config changes directly, because each change may be discussed and accepted/rejected separately, and each change is just a one-liner - easier to review as a single list than a set of suggested differences. Once the differences will be agreed upon, it will be possible to commit them and work further. After each such batched change, the state of package will not be ideal (for example, some unnecessary applets may be left enabled), but I think it's easier to bring the configurations as closer together as posible first, and decide what to trim (if anything at all) later. Thanks! -- 1.7.2.3 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? [PATCH 1/3] [buildsys] don't copy .dotfiles from main source to the build directories
The .dotfiles present in the top-level directory are various stuff not really needed for compilation. Original source includes .gitignore and .ident.pro, debian build system adds .pc/ (from quilt) - and the latter even breaks compile since some files (newly created by patches) can't be read (quilt creates them in .pc/ with mode 000), and the source copy procedure fails. So just skip these and start with more or less clean build directory. [PATCH 2/3] [buildsys] don't copy but link source files into build directories
Not really large difference, but linking lots of files is more efficient than copying. Source files aren't changed during build. This change depends on the previous (don't copy .dotfiles), since one of possible .dotfiles to be found in (unclean) top source dir is .config, which should not be linked. But we don't include .dotfiles into the list of files to be linked/copied anymore. differences in busybox configurations, part1 (longish)
Part one of the discussion series. Config options which are enabled in udeb and static builds but not enabled in regular build. I assume two things: 1) regular build should include at least all options (with very few exceptions, see below) as udeb and static builds does. 2) generally, we want to ship all available utilities in regular build, and probably the same (maybe minus few exceptions which makes the binary extra-large) for static. This is just a beginning of the list of differences. If the assumptions above are correct, and the changes below look sane, and we agree with something. ;) Just for the record, non-static allyesconfig for i386 produces the following: textdata bss dec hex filename 40344917908988 414227 65213 busybox-1.17.1-9 133195429019180 1344035 148223 busybox-1.18.3-allyesconfig-shared I'm not sure we really need such a monster, so actual good question I'm still unsure about is: what's the intended usage for this tool? The config I use here does not include everything but only the most important utils, especially the ones which can't be easily substituted with shell code fragments. Most important: what's the usage for the static build? DPKG and DPKG_DEB (dpkg applet) Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: enable for deb, keep disabled for udeb Discussion: small dpkg can be useful, especially in a static build indeed (for repair purposes when nothing else can be run). Just keeping two configs in sync for regular build. For udeb it isn't needed, -- can be enabled but we've size constraints. See next option. AR (ar applet) Current: deb n static y udeb y Proposed action: drop from static and udeb Discussion: I'm not sure why it's used for udeb. May be obsolete dpkg applet. Since .deb file is an ar archive, only one of these tools can be built. I prefer to keep dpkg since it is more debian-friendly. FEATURE_NON_POSIX_CP With this option, cp file symlink will delete symlink and create a regular file. This does not conform to POSIX, but prevents a symlink attack. Similarly, cp file device will not send file's data to the device. Current: deb y static n udeb n Proposed action: disable for deb. This is a good one. From one side we're trying to be POSIX-compatible, from another the standard behavour is a somewhat unsafe, and from 3rd side, this busybox feature appears to be unexpected. Anyway, current cp from coreutils behaves as if this feature is turned off, so let's match coreutils here. --- autentification, login utils --- FEATURE_SHADOWPASSWDS support for getspent() and friends. Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: enable for deb Discussion: It is quite unexpected that busybox can't use shadow passwords. On the other hand, there's just a few applets which actually deals with passwords, and most of them are disabled for deb build. ADDUSER, DELUSER, ADDGROUP, DELGROUP Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: remove from static. Discussion: can be trivially done using some editor or sed magic or just 'echo'. PASSWD Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: enable for deb Discussion: probably needs to be setuid to work well, but good for root-only. Can be used from within an initrd to (re)set system password (alternative is to use editor to set it to empty string). CHPASSWD or CRYPTPW (not really a difference, but suggested to be enabled in context of passwd utility, currently disabled) FEATURE_PASSWD_WEAK_CHECK Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: drop for static Discussion: most likely irrelevant option, since the checks it performs are very basic. GETTY, LOGIN, NOLOGIN, SU, SULOGIN, VLOCK Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: disable static Discussion: I'm not actually sure why all this is enabled for static build, it makes very little sense unless we really need full system in a single executable. --- init --- INIT (init applet) Current: deb n static y udeb y Proposed action: enable for deb Discussion: small init is actually useful at times, I use it on our diskless workstations (which runs Debian). FEATURE_INIT_SYSLOG this lets init to perform syslog logging. Current: static n udeb y Proposed action: set to n for deb after enabling init (by default it is enabled upstream). RFC. FEATURE_INITRD Legacy support for running init under the old-style initrd. Allows the name linuxrc to act as init, and it doesn't assume init is PID 1. Current: static y udeb n Proposed action: enable for deb Discussion: Is it actually needed? The feature itself is still supported by current kernel, so it's probably a good idea to support it. The code size is very small. PIVOT_ROOT and FREERAMDISK goes together and near INITRD, since most usage is around initrd. Note that pivot_root is used nowadays for lxc Current: deb n static y udeb y Proposed action: enable for deb Discussion: tools for initrd (legacy but may be useful) HALT Current: deb n static n

Move g_ether detection from hw-detect.sh to ethdetect.sh?
Hi, I was wondering why g_ether (USB gadget module) detection/loading is done in hw-detect.sh, and whether ethdetect.sh would be better suited for that. g_ether is a USB gadget module, meaning that when it's loaded, the USB port behaves like an ethernet adaptator and cannot be used to do anything else. It is currently used as the primary network interface of the FreeRunner, and it is loaded in hw-detect.sh so that the installation can be done using network-console. Re: differences in busybox configurations, part1 (longish)
First I'd like to thank you for doing that but I'd also want to make clear that we need to be conservative on udeb flavour since the installer heavily depends on it. More bellow... On Mon, Feb 14, 2011 at 22:06, Michael Tokarev m...@tls.msk.ru wrote: ... Just for the record, non-static allyesconfig for i386 produces the following: text data bss dec hex filename 403449 1790 8988 414227 65213 busybox-1.17.1-9 1331954 2901 9180 1344035 148223 busybox-1.18.3-allyesconfig-shared I'm not sure we really need such a monster, so actual good question I'm still unsure about is: what's the We surely not! intended usage for this tool? The config I use here does not include everything but only the most important utils, especially the ones which can't be easily substituted with shell code fragments. Personally I agree that all-yes is a no-go. We ought to use some common-sense when thinking about enabling or not something. Personally I think it shouldn't be enable in any flavour since a deb package can be extracted with ar and tar. So easily done in case of need. AR (ar applet) Current: deb n static y udeb y Proposed action: drop from static and udeb Discussion: I'm not sure why it's used for udeb. May be obsolete dpkg applet. Since .deb file is an ar archive, only one of these tools can be built. I prefer to keep dpkg since it is more debian-friendly. deb=y It is used on d-i since udpkg rely on it to work. FEATURE_NON_POSIX_CP With this option, cp file symlink will delete symlink and create a regular file. This does not conform to POSIX, but prevents a symlink attack. Similarly, cp file device will not send file's data to the device. Current: deb y static n udeb n Proposed action: disable for deb. ... Agreed. I'd say to enable it on deb since it can be an important applet for embedded people to rely on. ADDUSER, DELUSER, ADDGROUP, DELGROUP Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: remove from static. Discussion: can be trivially done using some editor or sed magic or just 'echo'. Agreed. At least for now it can be dropped. PASSWD Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: enable for deb Discussion: probably needs to be setuid to work well, but good for root-only. Can be used from within an initrd to (re)set system password (alternative is to use editor to set it to empty string). Fully agree. CHPASSWD or CRYPTPW (not really a difference, but suggested to be enabled in context of passwd utility, currently disabled) IMO this shouldn't be enabled. FEATURE_PASSWD_WEAK_CHECK Current: deb n static y udeb n Proposed action: drop for static Discussion: most likely irrelevant option, since the checks it performs are very basic. Agreed. This can hurt embedded people. I am adding Hector so he can comment on it. INIT (init applet) Current: deb n static y udeb y Proposed action: enable for deb Discussion: small init is actually useful at times, I use it on our diskless workstations (which runs Debian). Agreed. FEATURE_INIT_SYSLOG this lets init to perform syslog logging. Current: static n udeb y Proposed action: set to n for deb after enabling init (by default it is enabled upstream). RFC. We have a busybox-syslog that depends on it, no? For udeb please let it as is. IMO it could be disabled. It is difficult to think someone is using a such old way of booting for wheezy based systems. PIVOT_ROOT and FREERAMDISK

I have the gut feeling that static busybox was mostly used for testing cross-built system images under Qemu user-mode emulation. I can't serve with references now, but a web search would surely give you relevant hits. That's why the current static config is so much different from the other two: all three serve rather different purposes (deb: initramfs and rescue, udeb: d-i, static: full system testing). However, maybe the emulation use case isn't present anymore, since qemu-user gained the -L option... I hope embedded people can report on the current practices. I am not sure it ought to be enabled on udeb. Comments? I often find it easier to keep the server end on the machine being installed to avoid reconfiguration of the firewall on production machines (which block incoming connections to all unused ports). -- Cheers, Feri. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Quoting Michael Tokarev (m...@tls.msk.ru): Part one of the discussion series. Config options which are enabled in udeb and static builds but not enabled in regular build. I won't comment myself (as said already, this is out of my field of expertise), but I'd suggest to also wait for Joey Hess input. Joey is our history memory in D-I and, for anything that deals with what we need in D-I (so for the udeb), his advice is more or less mandatory... Input by Bastian Blank would be great as well, though Bastian uses to be quite scarce when he comments things (but he nearly always has a point..;:-)) signature.asc Description: Digital signature
