Bug#615600: BOOTIF= kernel commandline option does not work
Howdy, I just came across this report in Debian's bug tracker. On Sun, 27 Feb 2011 16:22:28 -0400, Joey Hess wrote: > BOOTIF is a pxelinux boot parameter. It is supported by the Debian > initramfs when pxe booting, but it is not supported by the Debian > installer. > > Perhaps it should be. In the meantime, you can use the documented > preseeding interface of booting with interface=eth1. I don't think > netcfg allows specifying a interface by MAC though. Floris Bos mentioned that this is similar to an oldish bug (at least by Ubuntu standards) in Ubuntu's bug tracker against the netcfg package: provide a method to use a specified MAC-address as the installation device * https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/netcfg/+bug/56679 We have a proposed solution, in the attached script, S31pxedust. Adding 'ipappend 2' to the host's pxelinux config file makes PXELINUX append the mac address of that interface to the kernel options. * http://syslinux.zytor.com/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX#IPAPPEND_flag_val_.5BPXELINUX_only.5D This allows the initrd to access to the mac address of the interface which PXE booted and is probably the interface we want to use for DHCP. Executing from the debian-installer-startup.d directory of the initrd, this script reads the value of the 'BOOTIF' kernel option and looks to see if there is an interface name with this mac address. If so, it then uses 'db_set' to change the 'netcfg/choose_interface' option to this interface name. Would you be willing to consider this approach? We'd absolutely like to avoid diverging from Debian in support of a BOOTIF kernel option for installations, and we have a great need for a supported approach. I'm willing and able to modify and test the attached boot accordingly. Please advise. Thanks, -- :-Dustin Dustin Kirkland Ubuntu Core Developer S31pxedust Description: Binary data

I suggest you to use Debian 6.0.1 or the current daily images [1] and report any issues you find with it. On daily images it is available kernel linux 2.6.37 and from the wiki seems you will need at least linux kernel version 2.6.35. If you need to install firmware not available in Debian the installation guide [2] gives some guidance [3]. The firmware for your ethernet card seems to be tg3 [4]. I am closing this report as it was not used the official/current installer. It would be great if you take the time to try the current installer and send another report based on a current image. 1 - http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ 2 - http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/index.html 3 -http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch06s04.html 4 - http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/netxtreme_desktop.php -- Melhores cumprimentos/Best regards, Miguel Figueiredo http://www.DebianPT.org --- End Message ---

Sure. If I finally decide to go for a list of states and territories for AU, I'll look back at the ISO-3166-2 database and use the exact wording there (which, I confirm, doesn't use hyphens, you're right). > Why do you prefer that? Probably a feeling that maybe that, time being decided by states, it makes sense to refer to states. I agree this is somehow borderlineand I think it's at least worth taking time to think about this with the constant goal of keeping things as simple as possible (leaving "dpkg-reconfigure tzdata" to very very picky people). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#618929: Additional info
I have discovered, purely by accident, that if I have my Windows 98 O/S disc in the CD drive as the Linux system is powering up, a program on the Win98 disc will gain control and offer me the choices " Boot from Hard disc, or Boot from CD ROM". On selecting the Hard disc choice, the Linux systems boots. I briefly see the GRUB prompt on the screen as the process starts, but it quickly scrolls off as the other start-up messages are output. I would rather the system start without the need for a CD in the drive. Mike This message and any enclosures are intended only for the addressee. I noticed that there are packages (for example pm-utils) whose architecture is 'all' and nonetheless they are not installable on kFreeBSD because of unsatisfiable dependencies. Does this mean the architectures are not equal in rights - an 'all' package is allowed to be uninsallable on kFreeBSD but not on Linux? > Hence I would suggest to change the Architecture field of > console-setup-freebsd to "kfreebsd-any" (and to linux-any for c-s-linux, > obviously). This would require an unnecessary recompilation of the package for all architectures, something I'd like to avoid. On a slow machinke (like those used by build daemons on some architectures) the compilation of console-setup could take hours. If an 'all' package is not allowed to depend on kFreeBSD-only package, then I'd rather lower the dependencies of console-setup-{linux,freebsd} from strong Depends to merely recommends. There are enough checks in the scripts of console-setup to make sure it will work (with reduced functionality, of course), if some of its dependencies are not satisfied. In addition to this, it is possible to apply the distributive law of the propositional calculus and use the following in console-setup and console-setup-mini: Depends: kbd | console-tools | console-setup-freebsd, console-setup-linux | console-setup-freebsd, console-setup-linux | vidcontrol, console-setup-linux | kbdcontrol, kbd | console-tools | vidcontrol, kbd | console-tools | kbdcontrol Hopefully, the great APT will not get too much confused by this. :) Anton Zinoviev -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#619366: Squeeze install hangs (Mac mini)
Package: Installer I would like to install Squeeze on a Mac mini (Intel, mid-2010 model). As the normal i386 install does not recognize the Ethernet hardware, I'm using the special version from http://wiki.debian.org/MacMiniIntel. It starts out promisingly, but hangs at "Select and install software", with the indicator bar stuck at "1%". This will go on for hours. I can only stop the endless wait by switching the power off. I reported the problem on the user forum http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=61866 However, there have been no answers. This is caused by the way poll() reports end-of-file, which cannot be portably relied on. The attach patch uses feof() instead of POLLHUP to detect it. Though it's somewhat unrelated, it also disables short-circuiting doxygen on Hurd, which does not apply any more and makes the package fail to build because of missing files in debian/tmp/usr/share/doc. -- Jérémie Koenig http://jk.fr.eu.org/ Index: packages/libdebian-installer/debian/control === --- packages/libdebian-installer/debian/control (revision 63370) +++ packages/libdebian-installer/debian/control (working copy) @@ -3,7 +3,7 @@ Priority: optional Maintainer: Debian Install System Team Uploaders: Bastian Blank , Colin Watson -Build-Depends: dpkg-dev (>= 1.13.5), debhelper (>= 7.3.0~), autotools-dev, doxygen [!hurd-i386] +Build-Depends: dpkg-dev (>= 1.13.5), debhelper (>= 7.3.0~), autotools-dev, doxygen Standards-Version: 3.8.1 Vcs-Svn: svn://svn.debian.org/d-i/trunk/packages/libdebian-installer Index: packages/libdebian-installer/debian/rules === --- packages/libdebian-installer/debian/rules (revision 63370) +++ packages/libdebian-installer/debian/rules (working copy) @@ -21,9 +21,7 @@ override_dh_auto_build: dh_auto_build -ifneq ($(DEB_HOST_ARCH_OS),hurd) $(MAKE) -C build/doc doc -endif override_dh_clean: ifneq "$(wildcard /usr/share/misc/config.sub)" "" Index: packages/libdebian-installer/src/exec.c === --- packages/libdebian-installer/src/exec.c (revision 63370) +++ packages/libdebian-installer/src/exec.c (working copy) @@ -162,14 +162,12 @@ { bool exit = false; +/* Implementations of poll() deliver various combinations of POLLIN and + POLLHUP on EOF. fgets() detects it and we check with feof() below. + References: http://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/2001/06/poll.html */ for (i = 0; i < pipes; i++) { -/* References: http://www.greenend.org.uk/rjk/2001/06/poll.html */ -#if defined(__FreeBSD_kernel__) - if ((pollfds[i].revents & POLLIN) && (! Why do you prefer that? Australia is highly urbanised; we're accustomed to “Sydney” as a stand-in for “New South Wales”. Moreover, it's very common for time zones around the world to be described by the dominant city of the region (“Tokyo time”, “London time”, etc). On Mar 23, 2011, at 2:15 AM, Christian PERRIER wrote: I'm just not fond of "Australia/Sydney" presented as a choice, I'd rather have "New South-Wales". For what it's worth, the timezone database (as evidenced by, among other things, the output of the "tzselect" command) is organized mostly in terms of country/city rather than country/larger- geographical-area. Which is not to say that the larger geographical areas get completely short-shrift in the timezone database. Look at the directory structure under /usr/share/zoneinfo for example. As I understand it, the choice of a large city in the affected geographic area is practical in two ways: 1) Individual cities are fairly unlikely to be split into two or more timezones. Larger geographical units are more likely to be split than individual cities -- all depending on unpredictable future political squabbles. 2) Most people know what their nearest large city is. They may not know the fine distinctions of past and present political divisions as applied to timezones as applied to their present location. Just one point of view from somebody who occasionally lurks on the "tz" mailing list. Enjoy! Rick -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
