I have to say in my defense that I did check for changes in udeb
output. However these changes don't happen on my arch
(kfreebsd-amd64), as they're i386-specific.  I admit I should have
checked both.

Actually, the problem is not presence of acpi.ko itself, but the fact
that a symlink to this file exists in /boot/. This is due to an old
postinst kludge from pre-GRUB time.

Attached patch should fix the problem. I can upload a fixed
kfreebsd-8 this evening (feel free to NMU if someone has time to
verify earlier than that).

Running cdebconf. Status and RFC

2011-10-05 Thread Regis Boudin
Hi guys,

So, unfortunately for you, I'm still working on cdebconf. I've fixed a
couple of issues, though I would like some feedback before pushing some
other changes I have.

 * debconf/frontend: debconf and cdebconf have different names for the
frontends (Readline, Dialog, Gnome, versus text, newt, gtk), which causes
all sorts of issues for the transition. Any objection to using
cdebconf/frontend instead ?
 * When switching from debconf to cdebconf, there is the problem of the
database. One uses /var/cache/debconf, the other /var/lib/cdebconf by
default, meaning either it has to be migrated, or cdebconf will have to
use /var/cache/debconf. The main issue of migrating the database is in
the case of a system wide upgrade where cdebconf would actually replace
debconf. Between the package being unpacked and the postinst script being
run, the database will be unconfigured ; so any other package trying to
use debconf in this interval won't have access to the previously set
values. This includes triggers, e.g. in the man-db postinst.
Do you have any opinion in the long term ? In the short term, I could
include the migration script for people willing to test, but I would like
someone else's view on it before I do it.

I'm considering an upload soon-ish, after I have feedback on these 2
subjects. Again, any objection ?

Thanks,
Regis

I think in the worst case we can just keep the current (as in
non-point release version) of d-i on kfreebsd-* for the next point
release and don't update to the binNMU. It's actually from the same
source, so there are no issues with introducing out-of-dates.

It's not that we'd need any urgent fixes in d-i on kfreebsd.

That said, this needs to be fixed, and we're all not very happy, given
the fact that we actually did ask before if something changes in the
udeb output.

debian-installer was binNMUed earlier today in preparation for the point
release, and FTBFS on kfreebsd-i386. The log finishes with:

# Move the kernel image out of the way.
mv -f ./tmp/cdrom/tree/boot/kfreebsd.gz ./tmp/cdrom/kfreebsd.gz;
test -e ./tmp/cdrom/tree/boot/zfs || rmdir ./tmp/cdrom/tree/boot/
rmdir: failed to remove `./tmp/cdrom/tree/boot/': Directory not empty
make[7]: *** [stamps/tree-unpack-cdrom-stamp] Error 1

The problem appears to be that the contents of the kernel udeb have
changed:

$ debdiff kernel-image-8.1-1-486-di_0.6_kfreebsd-i386.udeb
kernel-image-8.1-1-486-di_0.6+b1_kfreebsd-i386.udeb
[...]
Files in second .deb but not in first
-
-rw-r--r--  root/root   /boot/acpi.ko

This appears to be due to the fact that the new kfreebsd-8 +squeeze1
kernel on -i386 builds acpi.ko as a module, which is then picked up by
existing "install this module if it exists" rules in kernel-wedge.

A quick fix would be appreciated, whether from the kfreebsd or d-i side,
given the increasingly short period of time we have remaining until the
point release is scheduled.

Regards,

Adam

Partly the same here, I also looked into the wrong one.
I looked into the one of the udeb.

Yes this look secure. What about the udeb script?
/debian/tree/busybox-udeb/usr/share/udhcpc/default.script:
do_resolv_conf() {
local cfg=/etc/resolv.conf

if [ -n "$domain" ] || [ -n "$dns" ]; then
echo -n > $cfg
if [ -n "$domain" ]; then
echo search $domain >> $cfg
fi

for i in $dns ; do
echo nameserver $i >> $cfg
done
fi
}

Not quoted in thsi case.

I think it's no big problem. Even if this could be a DoS scenario it would be a
rather obscure one.

In this case even an unquoted $domain is probably no problem.
E.g.:
$ domain='`id`'
$ echo $domain
`id`

Actually it was me who looked into the wrong script - I looked into the
version installed on my system, which is modified by me long ago. That
version does not use any of the "bad" variables at all.

You're right, the actual script in the dhcpc package refers to $domain
variable - the only variable referenced in this script which may be
insecure.

But you're not correct that the variable is used unquoted. Here's the
actual code:

# Update resolver configuration file
R=""
[ -n "$domain" ] && R="domain $domain
"
for i in $dns; do
echo "$0: Adding DNS $i"
R="${R}nameserver $i
"
done

if [ -x /sbin/resolvconf ]; then
echo -n "$R" | resolvconf -a "${interface}.udhcpc"
else
echo -n "$R" > "$RESOLV_CONF"
fi
;;

So, in all cases the variable is enclosed in double quotes.

There's just one possible problem with this: it is possible to
inject bad - eg, syntactically incorrect - content into /etc/resolv.conf.
I'm not really sure if glibc's resolver will cope with any and all
garbage found in /etc/resolv.conf, but its parser is very simple and
just ignores everything that it does not understand.

It is definitely not possible to execute (shell) code "embedded" in
${domain} variable - at least not from the udhcpc script quoted above.
Also, the only place where content of a single "insecure" variable is
used is /etc/resolv.conf (which is already controlled by an rogue dhcp
server anyway, to a large extent) - eg, the default script does not set
system hostname to the string supplied by dhcp server.

> inner workings of the dhcpc in combination with the surrounded scripts very
> well so please bear with me :)

There's nothing to know about really: dhcpcd converts every known option
found in dhcp reply packet into an environment variable, without any
content checking/filtering whatsoever. There are 2 most common types
of options: it is either a (list of) IP address(es), which are passed as
4-byte binaries and hence cannot contain bad strings at all (they're
converted into 1.2.3.4 - octet - form by udhcpc) - these are $broadcast,
$subnet, $router, $dns. And the other common type is string - a sequence
of any characters. One of these is $domain, there are others like
$hostname.

And all this stuff gets passed to the script, which may deal with them
in any way.

Note that in theory it is possible to have some other script - e.g. a
script executed by resolvconf from /etc/resolv.d/* directories - which
uses the same variables without clearing their contents. But this is
a different story, and that'd be a definitive bug in these scripts,
with or without a rogue dhcp server.

So, the only problem is when the default script is replaced/modified
locally and in insecure way.

Note that current udhcpc script is in /usr/share, so it is not possible
to replace it locally in debian (well, without diverting it) - it's a
bug in dhcpcd, a file intended to be modified should be a conffile and
placed into /etc. But this is, again, a different story ;)

Thanks,

/mjt
