Not the most clear man page...
On the (Ubuntu) version I have on my desktop, it also says nodiscard is
the default?!

==
discard
Attempt to discard blocks at mkfs time (discarding blocks initially is
useful on solid
state devices and sparse / thin-provisioned storage). When the device
advertises that dis‐
card also zeroes data (any subsequent read after the discard and before
write returns
zero), then mark all not-yet-zeroed inode tables as zeroed. This
significantly speeds up

filesystem initialization. This is set as default.

nodiscard
Do not attempt to discard blocks at mkfs time. This is the default.

I'd be very surprised if any udebs know anything at all about
/usr/share/man.

However, there are numerous postinsts, starting with bash, that run
update-alternatives on files in /usr/share/man/, which is likely to
not work well if the directory is missing.

I had the impression that there was going to be some sort of automatic
detection in the kernel of appropriate devices and that trim would be
automatically enabled for them. Is it not going to play out that way?

I assume the patch only adds discard as mount option to /etc/fstab?

In addition to that, it would also be nice if the "-E discard" option is
passed to mkfs.ext4, so that it TRIMs the entire disk partition prior to
creating the file system structures.

Installing Windows Vista or Debain

2012-03-11 Thread BRIAN JOHNSON
I downloaded a live image from the following site
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/
debian-live-6.0.3-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso

When I booted the DVD I created I was surprised the be invited to
install/repair Windows Vista? The computer I was trying to install Debain on is
currently running  Windows XP Professional and Fedora 16.

This is a snap shot of the root directory of the mounted ISO image

boot  bootmgr  efi  sources  wimfiles

Am I misunderstanding something or has your site been hacked?

I used it for some years with the tuxbox project. But it needs patches

Another possibility would be linking libstdc++ statically into devd.
This would increase its size in ~91 kiB.

Reducing libstdc++ with mklibs is tricky, so only the unreduced lib can
be included into the boot image. C++ is controversial, because the

Proposal to get Wheezy Alpha1 done

2012-03-11 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello,

I'd like to propose following timeline for alpha1 of installer:

  * until 03/14 get all translation-only changed udebs uploaded
  * until 03/14 get pending fixes commited uploaded
  * on 03/17 try to get the packages migrated to testing
  * once the packages are migrated (depends on the item above) we do
the upload of installer

If it all does well, we could have it done in two weeks ... I'd like
to know if someone has any objection with the above otherwise I plan
to start following it.

Comments?

It's an Emdebian-specific problem, commonly dash because it's one of
the first preinst scripts run (if not the first).

Normally, in Debian, this won't happen because dash contains files
in /usr/share/man/man1 but these files are removed for Emdebian.

What I'm considering is that the existing grip-config package used in
Emdebian gets introduced into Debian and provides a udeb to create this
directory. It does seem like overkill though. (Currently, grip-config
just provides a few optimised tasksel tasks which take the reduced
package set of Emdebian Grip into account).

Bug#663484: debian-installer: a broken testing link on the server prevents installation

I tried installing debian unstable using the local mirror we have here.
Unfortunately the testing link in the dists directory points to squeeze and
there is no wheezy, yet. Sid is mostly current, though. Unfortunately d-i
doesn't get to selecting the suite to install because of the broken release
file in the testing directory.

Bug#654317: Needs creation of /usr/share/man/man1

2012-03-11 Thread Neil Williams
clone 654317 -1
reassign -1 buildd.emdebian.org
retitle -1 Debian installer needs /usr/share/man/man1 created
quit

Once it fails, get to the install menu and select "Execute a shell"
then create a single directory:

mkdir /target/usr/share/man/man1

Then exit the shell and continue the installation.

It might be possible for Debian installer to gain a bit of support for
this.

Emdebian doesn't include manpages and some packages (and some udebs
apparently) don't expect this directory to not exist.

The installer images are experimental, notably various kernel packages
are missing because most Emdebian devices need specialised or
customised kernels.

The most useful place to discuss issues like this is the
debian-embed...@lists.debian.org mailing list, so I've cloned this bug
to buildd.emdebian.org which goes to that list.

I was able to proceed without a kernel (virtual box test), then the
network mirror needs to be specified manually as: mirror hostname:
www.emdebian.org, Debian archive mirror directory: /grip

HTH

Package: debian-installer
Version: wheezy kirkwood
Severity: grave

The installer has been downloaded from here :
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/wheezy/main/installer-armel/current/images/kirkwood/netboot/marvell/sheevaplug/

When running installation, just after setting time zone, the installer try to
detect hardware and stop with mess "Error while running 'modprobe -v
usb-storage'".

So partman can't run and Wheezy installation is aborted.

Then I have tried Squeeze installer form here :
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-armel/current/images/kirkwood/netboot/marvell/sheevaplug/

The Installation go normally to the end and my USB key contain a valid and
bootable file system.

As there has been no answer, lets assume, it is fixed by newer d-i images.
Please, feel free to reopen if the issue persists.
