Bug#687804: installation-reports: users are not able to review external documentation while stuck in the installer
Package: installation-reports Severity: wishlist Dear Maintainer, this is a feature request: It would be nice if users would have at least a web browser like lynx and an irc client available while they are using the installer. There has been/currently is a lengthy discussion about this on the debian-user mailing list starting with , | Message-ID: <928c0bda5efc0f17394b8f5f1d606ad3.squir...@fruiteater.riseup.net> | Date: Fri, 7 Sep 2012 13:37:55 -0700 | Subject: Installation | From: "Weaver" | To: debian-u...@lists.debian.org ` The discussion began with the suggestion to include an explanation into the D/i about what partitioning is when it comes to this stage. The feature request is like this (quoted from a post to debian-user I'm about to send): Wouldn't it be great if the D/i would present you at the partitioning step with something like: , |You can find detailed information that can | |help you to decide about partitioning at | |the following places: | | | |http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual| |http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_partitioning | |http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging| |[...] | | | `--- That could be a menu from which you select an URL and the corresponding page would be displayed in a web browser. You can read that with lynx just fine. Using a link to a wiki page that lists these pages would be better, though. The information could be updated without needing to change the installer. Make it a help feature, i. e. tell the users that they can press 'F1' or '?' any time and give them help through this related to whatever point in the installer they happen to be. The goal would be to give users a working system included on the installer CD/DVD that provides them at least with a (graphical) web browser, software to burn installation CDs/DVDs/bluerays, an irc client and other useful tools so that they can communicate and read web pages and are able to overcome problems that they may have during the installation. Including lynx and an irc client (and creating a wiki page) would be first steps which are probably much easier to do than extending the installer to a working system. *** End of the template - remove these lines *** -- Package-specific info: Boot method: CD Image version: don't remember Date: Machine: not relevant Partitions: Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [ ] Detect network card:[ ] Configure network: [ ] Detect CD: [ ] Load installer modules: [ ] Clock/timezone setup: [ ] User/password setup:[ ] Detect hard drives: [ ] Partition hard drives: [ ] Install base system:[ ] Install tasks: [ ] Install boot loader:[ ] Overall install:[ ] Comments/Problems: -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. Hello, Samuel Thibault, le Tue 24 Jul 2012 00:21:25 +0900, a écrit : > A solution to both problems would be to simply disable wrapping, Except that even if writing e.g. 100 characters to the console, the linux kernel still gives a '\n' to speakup after 80 characters, and thus it's split, which is even worse. I have instead added a DEBCONF_TEXT_HORIZ variable that enables horizontal display of choices. Samuel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#687454: Reassigning to installation-guide
retitle 687454 Mention that some drivers are functional without firmware reassign 687454 installation-guide thanks The problem of missing vio_type binary is already tracked in http://bugs.debian.org/678264, so no further action is required. Today I've received a report from another user who was confused by the tg3 driver prompting for firmware, so it looks like it would be beneficial to modify "Devices Requiring Firmware" section of the installation guide. In particular, We should include a note there that for some devices firmware may not be necessary, even though a firmware prompt is displayed. Broadcom devices using tg3 drivers may be mentioned as an example of such behavior. The pages http://wiki.debian.org/Firmware http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/NetbootFirmware also contain some useful firmware-related information and tricks, so might be worth mentioning. Bug#532852: Bug#619711: console-setup: breaks copying keymap to initramfs

As far as I can understand, this bug can be fixed in two ways - by code provided by console-setup, or by code provided by initramfs-tools. Almost all of the code required in order to fix this bug has been implemented in console-setup for quite some time. Unfortunately there are two problems: 1. I (as one of the maintainers of console-setup) can not guarantee that I will be able to maintain this code in future. Not because this will be too complex or too time consuming (no, it won't be...), but rather because I don't feel myself wanting to keep myself updated with any future changes in the initrd build process. 2. I suppose the maintainers of initramfs-tools can say something analogous... I am willing to provide any required development, education, whatever, the moment there appears a developer willing to maintain this. I'm not keen on this phrasing; it isn't a choice between me personally doing some manual configuring or me personally detecting network settings. I would prefer: Networking can be configured either by entering all the information manually, or by using DHCP (or a variety of IPv6-specific methods) to detect network settings automatically. If you choose to use [...] > Template: netcfg/get_ipaddress > Type: string > # IPv6 > # :sl6: > _Description: IP address: > The IP address is unique to your computer and is either: > . > * Four numbers separated by periods (IPv4); > * Blocks of hexadecimal characters separated by colons (IPv6). > . > You can also optionally specify a CIDR netmask. (Ah, here we go, dotted quads versus colonic octopoids.) I think if you're going to use an "either" it needs an "or", or to be a plain sentence rather than a two-bullet list... though on the other hand this layout does make it clearer that the part about CIDR notation is an optional extra rather than a third possibility. How about: The IP address is unique to your computer, and may be: . * four numbers separated by periods (IPv4); * blocks of hexadecimal characters separated by colons (IPv6). . You can also optionally append a CIDR netmask (such as "/24"). Meanwhile in the templates I'm not meant to be reviewing... there are some other trivial inconsistencies in spacing/commas/quotes. Plus: [...] > Template: netcfg/dhcp_hostname > Type: string > # :sl1: > _Description: DHCP hostname: > You may need to supply a DHCP host name. This package requires pump or dhcp-client. > . > The DHCP configuration process has been aborted. This *package*? What package? How can this happen, and what is the reader expected to do about it? Besides, "dhcp-client" is a virtual package provided by pump and a couple of others, so it's not "pump or dhcp-client". Maybe it should just say: No DHCP client was found. .
