Please note, that that menu is not existing on all CDs.
netboot or netinst CD for example does not have it.

Sure it has USB (or can have it). Maybe QEMU doesn't emulate that
properly.

I would expect this to be acceptable, but will await approval from the

Let's stop adding crap like this to new architectures/flavours.

Bug#691060: /etc/console-setup is not writable. No files will be saved there: saving stuff to /etc

2012-10-20 Thread Michael Tokarev
Package: console-setup
Version: 1.82
Severity: normal

During system startup, when /etc/init.d/console-setup script is run,
the above message is printed on the console if root filesystem (and
hence /etc directory) is mounted read-only.

It is not clear why setupcon is run with parameter --save from the
initscript, -- according to the manpage, setupcon --save is neeedd
if /usr is suspected to be unavailable during next reboot, so --save
is used in order to prepare all needed maps/fonts/etc in /etc for
the next reboot -- if I got it right. So, there's no need to use
--save again on that next reboot, yet it is used.

Maybe this --save can be removed from /etc/init.d/console-setup?

This is more or less cosmetic ofcourse, but it looks rather ugly when
such messages are printed during every system startup.

Thanks,

/mjt

d-i Manual: 5.1.7. The Boot Screen - alternative DEs

2012-10-20 Thread Brian Potkin
The attached patch is a description of an option which does not appear
to be mentioned in any detail in the Guide, (Thinking on, it is almost a
hidden option. Why can it not be in the top level menu?)

It also occured to me that users might want to see what the sub-menus
contain. At present only the main menu is shown in this section. A patch
is available if required,

Also. Would there be any benefit to having a paragraph or two linking
the menu items to other sections of the Guide.? For example, Linking
'Install with speech synthesis' to section 5.2. or 'Automated install'
to Appendix B. Easily done if wanted. A user reading this section might
want to know what they are in for.

Brian.

Bug#690889: udhcpc always returns a domain of "bad" when receiving a valid dhcp ack packet

2012-10-20 Thread Dave Rawks

On 10/19/2012 12:20 PM, Michael Tokarev wrote:

The new function to verify name validity introduced to fix CVE-2011-0997
disallows names with trailing dots. So any domain name ending in a dot
is rejected and is substituted with "bad" as subject says.

This is questionable - both the usage of names with trailing dot in this
context (it is not entirely DNS anymore, where trailing dot is obviously
allowed and perfectly valid), and rejecting of such names.

I think that rejecting valid and allowed values seems an overreach
especially when there is no consistency with the intention of the
"validation" as is mentioned in the code comment. IMHO, It seems not so
much a questionable behavior as an incorrect one.

On one hand, we should not use such name (with trailing dot) without stripping
the dot first, since, I guess, other components of the system (or installer)
may break not expecting this trailing dot. Currently, udhcpc does not do
this.

This reasoning seems strongly speculative. If the value in the dhcpd
config is valid and the protocol allows for setting the value to a
domain which has the root explicitly included then it seems like the
validation as to the usability of the domain for any particular end
consumer should be left to that end consuming software. In this case,
the previous behavior of the config resulted in perfectly usable
debian-installer execution and a functional system.

On another hand, modifying options does not sound good.

The comment in the change says:

+/* We don't need to be particularly anal. For example, allowing _, hyphen
+ * at the end, or leading and trailing dots would be ok, since it
+ * can't be used for attacks. [...]

but actually it does NOT allow neither leading nor trailing dots.
I disagree, to me neither of these is good since it can lead to,
at least, surprizes, -- in other software which is not expected
to see these dots. And this is exactly what this issue is about:
CVE-2011-0997 says about surprizes when malicious DHCP server is
sending not entirely correct replies.

If the worry is about "suprizes" I think it may be worth noting that
this new "validation" behavior was quite a surprise to me in that the
action taken by udhcpc is not described in any documentation that I have
seen nor is the action reported as a syslog event nor is a message sent
to stderr nor is a non-zero return value emitted at execution denoting
any failure in the normal execution of the program. I fail to see how
summary judgment about how I should configure my dhcpd daemon by
unrelated parties should break a previously working and still provably
valid configuration.

I'd say, for now at least, -- fix your DHCP once and for all and
be done with this issue.

My dhcp isn't broken (with regard to this issue) as long as it sends a
valid domain as the argument to the DOMAIN_NAME field.

Thanks,

/mjt

Testing with isc-dhcp-client also yields a successful lease with the correct
domain name set.

So the fix in busybox is different than implementd in isc-dhcp.

The result is a basic change in the functionality of debian-installer
and seems something that *at a minimum should be clearly documented*.

Another one: Please update d-i manual translations for Wheezy

2012-10-20 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello all,

[Sorry for cross list posting]

--- Another call to update translations for d-i manual ---

unfortunately there were several last minute changes in the d-i manual
(or let's say fortunately, since they are bringing the d-i manual on an
up-to-date status regarding actual hardware), so it would be fine, if you
could take time and update your translation.

Since there will be at least one more debian-installer release in preparation
for Wheezy, we still have chances to get updated translations for the
manual in.

If you have questions, ask on debian-boot@lists.debian.org.

Thanks for your time

In behalf of the debian-installer team

Holger

Comments/Problems:

Works great, nicely done.

Initially installed grub to /dev/sda by default , so I had to Go Back and
install grub to the mbr of /dev/sdb
where I wanted it.
GDM3 throw up an error at login and gnome started in fallback mode. Nothing
unexpected here.
