Bug#709436: debian-installer: too low memory requirement documented on the F2 boot screen

2013-05-23 Thread Ferenc Wágner
Package: debian-installer
Version: wheezy
Severity: minor

Hi,

Booting the Wheezy mini.iso, choosing Help from the menu, pressing F2 says:

You must have at least 44 megabytes of RAM to use this Debian installer.

Starting the installer with 64 MB of memory enters low memory mode, and
reports insufficient memory:

[...] At least 86 megabytes of memory are required.

Continuing the installation then runs into OOM situation.

The two memory requirement statements should be synchronized, 44 (or even
64) MB is clearly not enough.

Thanks,
Feri.

Indeed, the update hint was missing in the lowmem package. I have now
added that and updated the figures.

Severity: normal

Using the guided partition mode with LVM setup might fail if the
chosen hostname corresponds with an existing device name.

Example:

The hostname is set to vcs. The name of the automatically created
volume group is vcs as well then, though creation and use of it
fail because /dev/vcs is an existing character device already.

The *source* of the error isn't visible in the user interface but
just in the syslog.

Bug#694886: debootstrap: Creates available file w/o Description fields

Maybe Colin can shed some light on what's going on.

Oh wow, patch I wrote four years ago. Um. fx: reloads state

You can't create an empty available file because then dpkg
--predep-package won't have enough information to figure out which
pre-dependency to install next; and I don't think it makes sense to
attempt to reimplement the logic of --predep-package in the relatively
limited environment of debootstrap. The pre-dependency handling has
been working well apart from this bug, and it would be a shame to
destabilise it.

I tried to have a look at this, but I can't actually reproduce this
myself. Whether with the perl pkgdetails or the C one from
base-installer, debootstrap seems to create an available file with
Description fields, albeit only short ones without the extended values,
and I don't see any of these warnings from dpkg. Do I have to do a full
d-i install to reproduce this bug?

If somebody could provide a reproduction recipe, I can have a look.

I see it every time when I install using the norwegian bokmål locale.
Perhaps some non-english locale is needed?

Bug#709534: amd geode hardware netinst failure

2013-05-23 Thread daryl kuchay
Package: installation-reports

Boot method: How did you boot the installer? = network via USB
Image version: Full URL to image you downloaded is best

Processor: Geode LX800
Memory: 512MB RAM
Partitions: one root partition on a 4gb ide dom

Output of lspci -knn (or lspci -nn):

Comments/Problems: Looking at tty4 I see that the key pulled did not
match signature. Errors are every ten lines or so indicating libgcc1
was not found and it was needed to check the public key. debbootstrap
failed on generic description and the rest should be pretty easy as we
cant pass go until the public key resolved. Also see mentions that
apt-setup-udeb failed.

When downloading installer components I elected every single one. Not
sure if that is bad practice or not.

Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install. If libgcc1 and
apt-setup-udeb were accessible during the installer routines I feel
that this may have gone smoother.
