Re: debian-7.1.0-i386-netinst included installer can not detect network hardware

You may be thinking of the Broadcom Netxtreme II and IIx controllers
supported by the bnx2 and bnx2x drivers. Those are mostly found in
 servers.

Hmm, you may be right. I forgot there was a '2' in the one that required
the firmware to work at all. It has been a while since I installed
those machines.

debian-7.1.0-i386-netinst included installer can not detect network hardware

2013-07-09 Thread Mgr. Janusz Chmiel

Dear core developers,
I would like to express my deepest possible endorsement related to
Yours voluntary complex programmers work. I Am very empathic human being
and i know, how much time and how much intelectual work was been given
to The Debian installer development.
I like Debian distribution very, very much. The founder of The Debian
have loven his woman so much, deep and strong, that The name of The
distribution is containing The Deb characters. Because The name of The
girlfriend of The Debian founder was Debra.
I like The philosophy of Thee whole project. I like The freedom and
constructive developers discussions on The various mailing lists related
to The Debian operating system development.
I have very big constructive plea to You, like a team of experienced
developers.
I Am helpless to install Debian Squeeze by using official provided
installers.

I have tried The .iso images from The following direct links.

http://caesar.acc.umu.se/debian-cd/7.1.0/i386/iso-cd/debian-7.1.0-i386-netinst.iso

http://napoleon.acc.umu.se/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/7.1.0/i386/iso-cd/firmware-7.1.0-i386-netinst.iso

Installer is having The issues with my network integrated vireless chip,
Intel vireless.
Would some body of us give me The commands, which would enable me to
install Debian Squeeze to my empty harddrive? With no need to use
official installer?
Because live installer and official installer is suffering because of
detecting network hardware, even firmware .iso image with net installer
can not help me.

But remastersys can not install The Debian Squeeze to The usable form.
I AM getting The error message shadow passwords can not be enabled.
So i can not login to The system, because non root and also The root
user passwords can not be accessed.

Any help is strongly welcomed.
I would like to install Debian Squeeze live CD gnome to my empty
harddisk. The .iso image can be downloaded by using this direct link.

http://live.debian.net/cdimage/release/oldstable/i386/iso-hybrid/debian-live-6.0.7-i386-gnome-desktop.iso

My network carts are perfectly supported from The live Debian system, i
did not test The vireless network device, but i do not use it at all.
Broadcomm device is working for me so i can use The Internet perfectly
from The running live system.

Thank You for Yours programmers work.

I would use The kernel module to mount The squashfs image with Debian
Squeeze and i would copy it from other live distro, but this will not
allow me to login to The installed system.

Bug#712675: Possibly the same problem in wheezy

2013-07-09 Thread H:S

Hi,

I've encountered a very similar problem, but in the stable (wheezy) release (installer build
20130613). I'm not even able to go through the iso-scan step, so I consider the severity to be a
little bit higher than normal, as I'm effectively unable to install the stable version
of Debian by the boot from hard drive method.

The steps to reproduce the problem on my machine are as follows:
(replace /dev/sda3 and (hd0,2) with paths to a free, bootable 1 GB partition)

wget
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/wheezy/main/installer-i386/current/images/hd-media/boot.img.gz
wget
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/7.1.0/i386/iso-cd/debian-7.1.0-i386-netinst.iso
gunzip -c boot.img.gz /dev/sda3
mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/bootdisk
cp debian-7.1.0-i386-netinst.iso /mnt/bootdisk/
umount /mnt/bootdisk
shutdown -r now

Next, using grub, boot to the installer:
 root (hd0,2)
 chainloader +1
 boot

First problem:
As was reported before, the installer fails to find the iso image. The image
was copied to the partition containing the installer, just as I was told by the
last paragraph of http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch04s03.html.en. I
noticed that there are no sd* or hd* files in the /dev directory (on a computer
with 2 PATA hard drives), so in my case, something went obviously wrong in
hardware detection, causing the search to fail. Log does not seem to be very
useful -- however, there appears to be an issue with modprobe:
...
Jul 10 04:32:44 kernel: [ 16.257007] loop: module loaded
Jul 10 04:32:45 iso-scan: devices found: ''
Jul 10 04:32:45 iso-scan: selected_device(s)=''
Jul 10 04:32:45 iso-scan: ISOS_FOUND=''
Jul 10 04:32:45 iso-scan: MOUNTABLE_DEVS_COUNT='0'
Jul 10 04:49:59 main-menu[213]: (process:1243): modprobe: invalid option -- 'l'
Jul 10 04:49:59 main-menu[213]: WARNING **: Configuring 'iso-scan' failed with
error code 1
Jul 10 04:49:59 main-menu[213]: WARNING **: Menu item 'iso-scan' failed.

Second problem:
The first problem can be simply solved by using a USB flash drive containing
the iso image. The flash drive is correctly detected and the image found, yet
the installer fails again with basically the same (general) message. Debug log
shows that the image was indeed correctly detected, so I suppose the modprobe
issue must be the cause of all problems:
...
Jul 10 04:51:52 iso-scan: Found ISO ./debian-7.1.0-i386-netinst.iso on /dev/sda1
Jul 10 04:51:52 kernel: [ 1164.000596] ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet
Level 3
Jul 10 04:51:52 kernel: [ 1164.004590] ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A
Jul 10 04:51:52 iso-scan: Detected ISO with 'stable' (wheezy) distribution
Jul 10 04:51:52 iso-scan: Detected ISO with distribution 'stable' (wheezy)
Jul 10 04:51:52 iso-scan: Debian ISO ./debian-7.1.0-i386-netinst.iso usable
Jul 10 04:51:52 main-menu[213]: (process:1626): modprobe: invalid option -- 'l'
Jul 10 04:51:52 main-menu[213]: WARNING **: Configuring 'iso-scan' failed with
error code 1
Jul 10 04:51:52 main-menu[213]: WARNING **: Menu item 'iso-scan' failed.

As I'm not even able to start the installation process, I cannot comment on the
other two issues reported.

Thanks,

Martin Pavelek
