Comments:

(1) The installer ought to offer a wider variety of keyboard maps.

For example. I am accustomed to the "dvorak-classic" layout, which
differs significantly from the "Dvorak" layout offered by the installer;
in particular, the numeric row of dvorak-classic is

 [ 7 5 3 1 9 0 2 4 6 8 ]

so entering network parameters and passwords is a bit awkward with the
"Dvorak" layout.

%%%

(2) The installer ought to allow the user to specify the GMT/UTC time
zone, irrespective of the country selection.

%%%

(3) The installer ought to allow the user to specify the drive to which
GRUB Legacy or GRUB2 is to be installed, as well as the drive to which
the GRUB Legacy or GRUB2 MBR is to be written.

%%

Problem:

(1) On the first installation attempt, I elected to install GRUB2 as the
boot loader, but the system would not boot.

I was able to boot using a "SuperGRUB" rescue CD which I created from an
ISO image I found with Google. But several attempts to re-write the MBR
and several attempts to reinstall GRUB did not remedy the problem.

%%%

(2) On the second installation attempt, I elected to install GRUB Legacy
as the boot loader, but the system would not boot.

Again, I was able to boot using a "SuperGRUB" rescue CD which I created
from an ISO image I found with Google. But (again) several attempts to
re-write the MBR and several attempts to reinstall GRUB did not remedy
the problem.

%%%

(3) For the third installation attempt, I replaced the PATA drive with
another PATA drive, assuming that perhaps the boot track of the original
PATA drive was defective.

I again elected to install GRUB Legacy as the boot loader, but the
system would not boot.

Again, I was able to boot using a "SuperGRUB" rescue CD which I created
from an ISO image I found with Google. But (again) several attempts to
re-write the MBR and several attempts to reinstall GRUB did not remedy
the problem.

%%%

(4) For the fourth installation attempt, I disconnected the SATA drive,
thinking that the installer was broken for the case in which both PATA
and SATA drives are present in a system.

Again, I elected to install GRUB Legacy as the boot loader. The system
booted properly. I did not attempt to upgrade to GRUB2.

The installer wont start, I've tried it in my two computers.
This morning I've tried it in an amd64 and it worked just fine, so I
guess it's i386 specific.

Changes:
 libdebian-installer (0.88) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   [ Colin Watson ]
   * Drop the nonnull function attribute from di_mem_chunk_new and
internal_di_mem_chunk_compute_size; it is meaningless on functions none
of whose parameters are pointers, and clang warns about this.
   * Switch from INCLUDES to AM_CPPFLAGS in Makefile.am files.
   * Restore handling of pipe errors, since this is now a build failure in
 Debian due to -Werror=unused-result.
   * Convert to multiarch. (libdebian-installer4-dev cannot currently be
Multi-Arch: same due to differences in doxygen output.)
 .
   [ Dmitrijs Ledkovs ]
   * Set debian source format to '3.0 (native)'.
   * Bump debhelper compat level to 9.
   * Set Vcs-* to canonical format.
 .
   [ Christian Perrier ]
   * Update Standards to 3.9.4 (checked)

I am trying to install Debian 5.0.3, and decided to download the netinst iso to
burn. I downloaded it twice via this link:

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.3/i386/iso-cd/debian-503-i386-netinst.iso

Found here:

http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst

That iso had a md5sum of a7f128ff45efc3094b59889b1dbdd256 both times.

I then tried downloading that file from two different mirrors listed here:

http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/

Those files had md5sums matching the MD5SUMS file, which is
52794007fa5cc7b90d18943e867f05de.

Files from both sources have identical filenames: debian-503-i386-netinst.iso

I'm just curious why the main download link file has a different md5sum than
the mirrored version.

Thanks in advance.

Attempted to install to PERC3 raid PCI device, this worked on Debian 4.0 but
wont detect on 5.0.3.
attempted to install the megaraid_mbox module manually, no success.

Tried an adaptec raid controller type "I20" 2100S this also failed in disk

It appears to be compatible,

Version: 5.0

The installer hangs when the packages are downloaded.

Debian 5.0 installer used:
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0/amd64/iso-cd/debian-500-amd64-netinst.iso

Mirror selected: The only one in Norway.

Computer tried to install on: Lenovo ThinkPad T61 (model 6463 with 4GB RAM,
120 GB SDD)

Using the text mode installer I eventually select the default packages
suggested (desktop, laptop, standard) and the installer downloads. After a
while it writes "Retrieving file 808 of 808" and then just stops. I can
still use ctrl+alt+Fx to get extra console windows, and ctrl+alt+f4 shows
the last command as the "get"command to download a file. I'm sorry I do not
remember which.

I hope this can help you get this bug out of the way. It is a frustrating
way to learn about Debian.
If you need more info I am happy to assist.

Sincerely,
Stine

Package: installation-reports

Boot method: Network install using a boot CD
Image version: debian-Lenny-DI-rc2-386-netinst.iso
Date: Feb. 10, 2009

Machine: Micron Millennium Xku
Processor: Pentium II
Memory: 384 MB
Partitions: The machine won't boot, but then entire 8 GB disk was being
used for Lenny & swap
Output of lspci -knn (or lspci -nn): not available

Base System Installation Checklist:
[O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it

Initial boot: [O ]
Detect network card:[O ]
Configure network: [O ]
Detect CD: [O ]
Load installer modules: [O ]
Detect hard drives: [O ]
Partition hard drives: [O ]
Install base system:[O ]
Clock/timezone setup: [O ]
User/password setup:[O ]
Install tasks: [O ]
Install boot loader:[O ]
Overall install:[E ]

Comments/Problems: After the install (graphical), the dialog asked that
the CD be removed, then click Continue to reboot. Did that, and the
machine complained about some thermal devices failing (I doubt that they
exist), then everything stopped, just a blank screen. I rebooted, tried
both boot options (multi & single user), but the results were the same.
Previously, the machine had Etch, which booted fine, although there was
a small video problem. Etch detected the Voodoo 3dfx card and the
viewsonic monitor, but got some of the settings wrong, which I
corrected.

Let me know if there are any debug suggestions and I'll try them.

I kept some notes on the install from the boot CD and would like to
share them for your thoughts.

1. The install from a netinstall CD takes a long time -- over two
hours! Perhaps that could be cut down a little?

2. I used the graphical installer because I assume that is the
direction Debian is headed. Personally, a good text installer is fine
with me as long as enough information is presented to make good
decisions.

3. The graphical installer is hard on the eyes because it uses a
default video setting. I understand why this is done, which is why I
like text installers better.

4. Before installation really gets going, the installer should detect
all the key hardware such as video card, monitor, audio, disks, etc.,
then present the information to the user for correction of each. In
addition, it should flag the user if there is a conflict such that
something may not work (like the video card for example). Doing this
would save a lot of time and aggravation.

5. The installer needs either a help function, or just more descriptive
text so the user can make matter decisions. For example, why use one
partition instead of one for the OS and one for the home dir. I already
have the answer to that, but a lot of people may not.

6. A printable installation guide is needed because it is often not
possible to be online while installing. The guide needs troubleshooting
information in it. This information is on the Debian web site, but
HTML, not a PDF that I have found (let me know if I missed one).

All said, I do like Debian and will try again when Lenny is released.

I booted the installer from a CDRom that I burned after downloading the
image from the Debian site. Sorry I can't provide the full download
url because I down- loaded it about 10 days ago, to test the RC2 of the
installer.

Here are the details of the image I installed:
7e1d4e59a3cdcc5e1d4c8769aa082c6b debian-Lenny-DI-rc2-i386-netinst.iso

I installed it on new equipment on Feb 12, 2009 around 4-5 pm.

The machine is a home built desktop:

This needs a brief explanation. I have a small installation at the
front of the disk I use as a grub host and fallback. It is debian
lenny now, just a base installation - what you get when you "unselect"
everything on the "choose software" list. I even clear "standard
system". On this installation, I select to install grub, and install
grub to the MBR too. The only other changes to this partition are to
install file-rc, mc and gpm. I edit the grub menu.lst on this partition
to allow for my "main" lenny install on sda2 (not done yet). I don't
mess around with sda1, it is just there to host the grub files, and I
never change them because I aim each boot choice at /vmlinuz which is
the link in the root directory. That way, if I change kernels in sda2
(my main install) the menu.lst in sda1 doesn't have to be changed.

So when I started the main install (sda2) I had something similar to
the first 3 partitions, plus an extended partition with a couple of
small logical partitions to use for swap, but I wanted to change the
sizes.

I selected "graphical expert" install on the installation for SDA2 (the
subject of this report). Everything went fine and when I got to the
partitioning part I deleted all the partitions except for SDA1, then
added 75 megabytes for SDA2 and did the installation confirming that I
didn't want to add a swap file.

Later, after I booted into SDA2 and got things organized a bit, I used
fdisk to add some more partitions, namely sda3 and sda4 (extended).
Also, sda5 and sda6.

The idea is that I would have one "homebase" in sda1 that I never
changed and always allows me to boot the machine. In addition, I have
a main lenny install in sda2 and another partition (sda3) in case I
want to install "squeeze" in a few months. sda5 and sda6 are to
provide minimal swap for these two installations if I feel like it. The
rest - sda7 will be for misc use, maybe to backup some stuff.

I don't know why I get so wordy, but I think the issue I'm getting to
is that it would be nice to have access to fdisk at an early stage,
just to set the disk up the way you want. If that is possible by
switching to another tty during the installation but I never thought to
check that. If I could have done that, I wouldn't have followed the
convoluted process I followed, I would have just done it and then
rebooted the install cdrom and proceeded.

That's the only criticism I have of the installation cd. I don't like
the feeling I get from the "manual" partitioning tool. You can create
either primary or logical and there is no mention of "extended", so did
it get created a

I had some problems installing RC2 on my Sparc (SunBlade 1000), when I
chose the Guided partitioning with LVM option. The machine failed to
boot after reboot at the end of the installation. It looks
like the LVM volumes are set up correctly, however the initramfs script
scripts/local-top/lvm2 which is supposed to start the volumes up is
not getting invoked. If I run it by hand, the device nodes in
/dev/mapper get created, and I can exit initramfs shell to
successfully complete the boot.

This machine needs firmware loaded from the USB stick, and this causes
(known?) issues: if I insert the stick to load the firmware, and then
remove it immediately after the loading step, the real disk is still
detected as /dev/sdb, and that's what gets written to the
configuration. So if I later boot without the stick, the disk is
detected as /dev/sda, causing problems. Amusingly, I can boot
when using LVM, because /boot is a separate (non-LVM) partition and is
only used to only read kernel and initrd, however filesystem check for
/dev/sdb1 (which is /boot) fails, as device does not exist.

Cheers.

After a smooth installation it fails to write Grub to the MBR. A manual

keep a lot of "normal" users from using Debian 6.

   [ Cyril Brulebois ]
   * Specify three arguments for all AC_DEFINE{,_UNQUOTED} calls, since
autoheader doesn't like having only 1 or 2 arguments there. Use
“[1]” as the second argument when there was only one, since that's
the default when it's not specified.
   * Run autoreconf as build time:
 - Add dh-autoreconf as a build-dep.
 - Call dh_autoreconf before dh_auto_configure through an extra
configure target and dependencies from */config.status.
 - Call dh_autoreconf_clean in the clean target.
   * Remove the following files from git accordingly:
 - aclocal.m4
 - configure
 - src/config.h.in
   * Wrap Build-Depends and Uploaders fields.
   * Add myself to Uploaders.
 .
   [ Colin Watson ]
   * Ignore some automake-related configure options, silencing warnings from
 dh_auto_configure.
 .
   [ Christian Perrier ]
   * Fix spelling error in a former changelog entry in "Explicitly".
This will save us from a lintian warning.
   * Update Standards to 3.9.4 (checked)
 .
   [ Dmitrijs Ledkovs ]
   * Set Vcs-* to canonical format.
   * Simply use (>= 9) version specifier for debhelper.
 .
   [ Regis Boudin ]
   * Link with -Wl,--as-needed, avoiding many indirect dependencies from GTK.
   * Explicitly link the passthrough module with libdebian-installer.
   * Use @DI_LIBS@ instead of -ldebian-installer in Makefile.in.
   * Check that the return of getenv() is not NULL before trying to use the
result. Thanks to the Mayhem Team for running their tests.
   * Let dpkg-preconfigure only run as root, just like dpkg-reconfigure.
   * Rework database saving to store the old versions.
   * Fix a typo to correctly recognise password options.

I use Dvorak and every time I install Debian I have to hunt down keys
on a completely different layout in order to complete the region
etc. settings.

Since a keyboard is a prerequisite to operate the rest of the
installer the very first question it should ask is which keyboard
layout you'd like.

Comments/Problems:

Grunb installer offers to install grub-pc into a partition instead of
the disk itself. When I selected this option, installation failed.
In the log window (Alt-F4) it said among others:
"grub-installer: Attempting to install GRUB to a partitionless disk or
to a partition. This is a BAD idea."
grub-installer: /usr/setup/grub-setup: warn:"
grub-installer: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be"
grub-installer: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed
in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE
and their use is discouraged"

The installer should not offer to install grub-pc into a partition if
he later refuses to do it, so the user knows he got to use grub-legacy
or lilo if he needs this kind of setup.

Everything else worked flawlessly. Thanks!

Regards,
  Herbert

partman hung at either 50% or 54% during the "Partition hard drives"

switching to a vt, i was able to see that it appeared to be hung
during 35dump.

killing parted from a vt was successful, but each time i tried to
re-run partman, it hung on 35dump again.

I ultimately installed manually, thanks to parted-deb and debootstrap
:(

The mdadm process hangs, which also occured in the bug report  #683849.

I could continue with the installation after adding "exit 0" at the

beginning of the file /lib/partman/init.d/25md-devices

(package: partman-md).

On the same machine the Squeeze mdadm command

exits  successfully:

retitle 637784 Please support installing on partitionless drives.

Dear Holger and everybody,

I think that it would be great if somebody could extend debian-installer to
install Debian on partitionless drives (like /dev/xvdb instead of /dev/xvdb1).

This would open the possibility to use debian-installer for preparing some
preseeded cloud images in a very simple way. Currently, this is done with
ad-hoc tools developed from scratch. Using debian-installer would also
ease the convergence between cloud images and standard installations, which
is wanted (see ).

(and please forgive me if partman is not the best package to hold this bug
report)

Have a nice day,

Bug#641172: unable to install on a system with Windows 7 and GPT partition table

2013-07-17 Thread ancow

I'm having the same problem, as I understand the original report:
I installed Win7 on a GPT drive and tried to install wheezy, which only saw a
blank hard drive (using both the KDE live disk and the netinstall iso in
expert mode).
I just went ahead and booted Knoppix to see if I could see a problem. gdisk on
the hard drive tells me that there are both a valid MBR and GPT.

To reproduce (hopefully), install win7 on a GPT disk (which came with the win8
computer) and look at the mess it produces...

  --Reinhold

PS: Since I actually want to use this system, I'm switching to MBR only now,
so I won't be able to do any more tests on the actual hardware.

Comments/Problems:

I started the network installer through GRUB in the Amazon Elastic Comptuter
Cloud, and connected to it through a network console launched via preseeding.

I gave a couple of details on my website:
http://charles.plessy.org/Debian/debiâneries/nuage/

While the detection of hard drives apparently went well (see attached
partman log), the partition step fails with the following error.

  ┌┤ [!!] Partition disks ├─┐

│ No root file system │

Despite being in expert mode with ‘low’ Debconf priority, the above is
the only thing I get at the Partition disks step. I need to press Escape
to return to the main menu, as otherwise it loops.

I tried to format the virtual drive on its first partition or without
partitionning, but it did not make a difference.

Do you have any idea ?

By the way, this is the first time I made such an advanced usage of the
installer
and I must say that I am very impressed.

Have a nice day,

Dear Maintainer,

I choosed guided partitioned, first option (use largest partition
available) and Debian wanted to create partitions (/ and swap) in my
usb stick.

There was another partition larger and unused (well, I'm not sure if
gparted formated it, that could be the reason of this 'issue', now
that I am thinking it is more than probable that the partition was
used (but empty)) than the usb in the first disk available.

Finally I changed partition schema manually, and it worked fine.

Another issue is that if you does not choose swap partition, warning
is ok, but a file should be created instead (or at least be asked if
user want to create).

Thank you for all your effort making Debian the best OS in the world.

When installing Lenny using debian-505-i386-CD-1.iso downloaded via
bittorent from
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.5/i386/bt-cd/debian-505-i386-CD-1.iso.torrent
to install into a VM using VirtualBox 3.2.0_OSE r29652 running on Ubuntu
Lucid which had previously had gNewSense deltah successfully installed
and running on it. I encountered the problem:
"
[!!] Select and install software
Installation step failed

An installation step failed. You can try to run the failing item again
from the menu, or skip it and choose something else. The failing step
is: Select and install software

"
A similar error occurred when installing using both the normal text
installer and the graphical installer.

Examining the debug logs the first error is:
"failed in buffer_write(fd) (12, ret=-1): backend dpkg-deb during
`./usr/lib/openoffice/program/libcui680li.so': No space left on device"

I suspect that this is due to my choosing of the guided partitioner
(separate / and /home partitions) which though it had 8GB to use only allocated
2.5GB to / and used the rest for /home.
Unfortunately this is probably not enough disk space to do a graphical
installation of debian. It may therefore not be a sensible default to
use when more disk space is available as when someone selects guided
partitioning they are probably operating on the basis that they think
that the installer knows more about how their disk needs to be
partitioned to install debian.

As a workaround I configured the partitions manually to use 4GB for /
and this worked.

The full debug logs are available at:
http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~drt24/debian/debian-lenny-select-and-install-software.debug.logs.tar.gz

Hopefully fixing this would only require a couple of lines in the guided
partitioner code to say something along the lines of "If I can fit the
recommended / partition size for Desktop in and still have 2GB left for
home then do that else use only 2.5GB". I suspect there will be similar
code which goes "If there is not 2.5GB available then bail with 'not
enough disk space'".

#415830 appears similar but the symptoms were very different (it
actually installed) and so the proposed solution much more complex.

Best regards,

Daniel

Comments/Problems:

I choose the tasks for desktop install, web server, sql database, ssh
server, and basic utilities. Things download okay, and I believe
start to install, but shortly thereafter I get the red error screen of
"an installation step failed". Upon switching VTs and poking around,
I discovered in /var/log/syslog that dpkg was failing due to running
out of disk space. 'df' confirms that the tmpfs on on
/dev/.static/dev and /dev/mapper/debian--testing-root on /target were
both full, with a size of 2.2G. I had granted 8GB of total disk space
to the VM. 5.1G were being used for /dev/mapper/debian--testing-home
on /target/home.

In short, I think the "automatically partition the disk" option isn't
giving itself enough space to work with in this admittedly unusual
configuration.

I ran through a second time only choosing the desktop and basic
utilities tasks, and that went through without a hitch. While this is
a fairly outside case that doesn't necessarily need to succeed, it
would be nice to at least have some logic to fail more gracefully /
informatively, whether that be saying that it failed due to
insufficient disk space, or better yet, telling the user after they've
selected tasks that they won't have enough room for those selections.

Comments/Problems:

linux-image-2.6.32-5-sparc64 was selected for installation.

System would not reboot. It ended up in openboot at the “ok” prompt.
Last message was “Fast Data Access MMU Miss”
(WOW. This STILL has not been fixed).
I assumed this was the same problem as with the 02-08-2010 build.
The problem was ameliorated then in terms of “fixing” bugs(569719, related =
565639 & 562594).
Did so again:
Did rescue into an installer shell within hda2.
>chroot /target
>mount /dev/hda1 /boot
>silo -u -f

Then attempted to reboot.
The boot process could not find “/dev/hda2” for root. It had been renamed
“/dev/sda2” in the boot environment.
But it was still /dev/hda2 on the disk. I changed hda2 to sda2 in
/boot/silo.conf . This allowed the boot sequence to complete.
Now I am left with disk partitions named sda* instead of hda*.
What is up with this? Are we changing naming conventions?
Will this inconsistency be fixed?
Thanks.

i di something very stupid, instead of 8G, i made my root partition only
8M large. the install fails of course, but it does so in a less than
desirable way: "debootstrap warning file://. corrupt". i think it
should really say "no space left on device"

Comments/Problems:
I have pb to partitioning with LVM

Hard disk is clean, no partition, space is 160G
Partitioning method, i'm select Manual.
I'm select FREE SPACE and enter
I create a new partition of 250M, primary, beginning, use as Ext3 and mount
point /boot
I create another partition of 15Go, primary, beginning, use as physical volume
for LVM
I create another partition with free space, primary, beginning, use as
physical volume for LVM
Now i configure the Logical Volume Manager
write the changes to disks and configure LVM? -> yes
 select Finish
Delete the two lvm partition
Recreate it with a partition of 20Go and another partition with free space
Now i configure the Logical Volume Manager
write the changes to disks and configure LVM? -> yes
Display configuration details show old partitioning...

I must use on Partition disk and select Detect disks, now LVM show
good size...

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the ("partman" related) bugs mentioned here and am closing
them now as
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they were (very) old.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply or just file a new one -
thats often better, as the bug log will be more clear.

cheers,
Holger

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the ("partman" related) bugs mentioned here and am closing
them now as
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they were (very) old.

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply or just file a new one -
thats often better, as the bug log will be more clear.

cheers,
Holger

Package: other (installation)
Version: lenny/squeeze/...

I tried to reinstall my whole system keeping my older /var and /home
partitions where there was some data I'd liked to keep.
When "installing the base system", deboostrap crashed (at "chroot /target
dpkg --install base_files"), the error console stating that there was no
user "root" in stateoverride file.

Using another console, "whoami" returned an "unknown user ID 0".

When I tried the reinstallation *without* mounting the /var and /home
partition immediately (and doing it by hand later), things worked smoothly.
This bug was present with both the netinst and buisnesscard installer in
both lenny and squeeze.

My guess is that /var kept info about the existence of root, hence
debootstrap did not recreate the user thus causing troubles later...

Installation of Debian/unstable failed at "Select and install

I could start a shell. The problem is the following: "df" says that
there are 516040 KB only on /dev/sda1. The end of the partman logs

Comments/Problems:

Creating partitions with partman in the graphical install causes random
crashes with Gtk errors about assertion failures. partman restarts with
a set of unpartitioned disks, making it impossible to ever finish
partitioning. I filed another bug for that one. Text install seems to
create partitions fine, but RAID fs creation hangs.

"physically located" or more specific than where somebody lives

I also included "physically accessed" given the fact people are
installing so many VMs these days - the VM may be physically running in
the US but accessed almost exclusively from Europe, for example.

Comments/Problems:

I chose "guided partitioning - use whole disk and set up LVM", the
system asked me to confirm destructive repartitioning, I did, but then
I got a red screen with an LVM error (could not find partition or
something like that). I made the exact same choice in the menu (guided
whole disk with LVM) and then it worked.

I chose "belgian" as keyboard. The installer and linux console (in the
installed system) indeed had the keyboard configured correctly; but
X11 was using layout "us". The /etc/X11/xorg.conf file was empty and
/var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum indeed has the hash of an empty file.

master@doggy:~$ md5sum /dev/null
d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e /dev/null
master@doggy:~$ cat /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum
d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Running "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" indeed had the "be" layout by
default, but still left the xorg.conf file untouched. Running
"dexconf" by hand solved the problem.

It would not be hard to ask 1000 questions just to make sure we give
each and every option one might possibly want to tweak.

Picking a different timezone in her clock settings in whatever
environment would work. Like, say, click the date/time area in Gnome,
choose “parameters” and select a different timezone.

(Also, last I checked, d-i isn't here to accomodate every convoluted
scenario you can come up with.)

I'm not sure that's an improvement.

I do hope people can understand that "where you live" then means "where
the PC will live".

Let's not make things more complex for 99% people just because 1% people
can't figure out this. People already say Debian has too many questions.

I agree it is not fundamentally broken and for people who know
Debian/Linux it is not hard to change later, but I still feel it is
rigid and it would not be hard to let people alter the timezone after
choosing a country

To give another example, consider a British person setting up a PC in
their holiday home in France: "country where you live" does not help
them make the system work the way they want.

Another option may be changing the text: "Normally this should be the
country where the computer is physically located or physically
accessed. This will not limit you to using the language or locale of
the country you choose and the installer will proceed in the current
language."
