Re: [PATCH 0/3] flash-kernel: support running in a chroot + local db overrides

2013-08-24 Thread Ian Campbell
On Thu, 2013-08-15 at 09:50 +0100, Ian Campbell wrote:
 Hello,

I wrote these ages ago, possibly even at dc12, but held off on them at
the time due to the Wheezy freeze. It's about time I got round to
 rebasing them!

First change is to honour FK_MACHINE in get_machine, IIRC it was bdale
who reported that the initramfs hooks weren't honouring this variable.
Moving the check from main() to get_machine() means that everything will
 pick it up.

Second is to add a capability to override the global db
via /etc/flash-kernel/db, for my purposes the reason is to be able to
override the boot device on systems (such as the dreamplug) which have
both internal and external mmc. Turns out I even filed a bug with this:
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=680900

I have push access to flash-kernel.git but I wanted to give folks a
chance to comment first. I also pushed the changes to gitorious, pull
 request output appended.

I've pushed these now.

Ian.

Comments/Problems:

I have an HPVM with Net, Disk, and a DVD ISO on host mapped as a DVD
drive

It appears as though the loader didn't hang but expected a GUI , had to
pass boot options to EFI loader
to tell it to use cmd line Debian install

EFI Shell fs0:
 fs0 bootia64 linux console=ttyS0

Or upon [Install} you can put Boot Option (linux console=tyS0 ) in
there..

Am able to get in-memory kernel from DVD but Debian installer wont see
CDROM emulation..
I will try this on native HW to see if it works..

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they were caused by broken hardware and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are quite old (and thus likely fixed today).

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - thats often better, as the bug log
will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

Comments/Problems:

Two problems. First, which minor, but seems to be a regression, is that when
doing LVM-on-Crypto-on-RAID, if you previous define a boot partition on RAID,
by the time you're done the main LVM etc partitioning and fs definition, the
boot partition on RAID loses it's information (i.e. no mount point is shown for
the /boot partition that's on RAID).

Second, is that if you create a new partition the default is GPT, but this
means tha the final step of installing the boot loader fails because there is
no BIOS boot partition which is required when root partition is LVM/Crypto.
Probably d-i should at least warn the user this might be a problem when they
define an LVM and/or crypto partition on RAID (IIRC that's the conditions where
GRUB complains).

Package: installation-reports

The installation process itself went really fine.

Juste one note about the feeling for partitioning : for what I've known
previously, the partitioning has been fairly improved ! However, I was
surprised when I chose the easy option (Assisted/guided partitioning), the
proposal got rid of all the existing partitions to provide a full installation
with Debian only. I think it might be confusing for newcomers to have the easy
option delete everything and install Debian only without clear notice. This
might not be what they expect.

So, I went back to manual partitioning and I could get through the whole
netinst installation : ethernet and wifi both recognized at install time
(Atheros devices).

After reboot, the system hung for a while at the following line :
[drm] Initialized nouveau 0.0.16 20090420 for :01:00.0 on minor 1

After some delay, I got the following repetitive message :
udevd[355]: timeout: killing 'usb_id --export
/devices/pci:00/:00:1a.0/usb2/2-1/2-1.2/2-1.2:1.0/video4linux/video0'
[650]

It lasts some time (117 s in syslog between 'initialized nouveau' and the next
init message) then the startup process continues until the graphical login
screen.
Despite the errors about video adapter, everything works fine with the display,
it's just annoying to have the delay and not very comforting to see errors ;-)

Comments/Problems:

Two issues:
1) Failed kernel install does not allow re-select of kernel:
I tried to install linux kernel 2.6-686 and it accepted that choice, then
errorer while installing the base system; it said 686 required PAE and my
CPU didn't support it, I needed to go back and install the 486 version.
However, after the base install failed, I could not change the kernel that I
selected. I went back to the partition menu and formatted the disk again,
then went to install the base system and it did not ask me what kernel I
wanted, but again tried to install 2.6-686.
Expected behavior: when a user selects install base system, it should
prompt to select a kernel image even if it has already been done.

2) Presented kernel options do not match installable options:
I rebooted and started over and tried to install linux kernel 2.6-486; it
instead installed linux kernel 3.0-486. It appeared that when I tried to
install 2.6-686 that it was also installing 3.0. If 2.6 is no longer an
option for wheezy, it should not be presented as an option. Also, the only
linux kernel 3.0 that was listed was 3.0-486, even though 3.0-686 is
installable by selecting the 2.6-686 kernel (and linux-image-686, I expect).
Expected behavior: drop the options for 2.6, add 3.0-686.

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

All hardware works well, including wifi (with no nonfree firmware needed),
brightness controls, audio, X, and even suspend/resume.

Had to manually run isohybrid on the CD to boot it from USB stick.

The lack of any desktop environment was an unpleasant quasi-surprise,
as it would have added an hour to the install to download it from a mirror.
Especially since I was already looking at getting home after midnight,
and snow was expected. The first CD thus seems basically useless compared
to say, a netinst. Ended up installing the desktop task after d-i, using
a handy mirror on a USB drive.

Here are some parition contents listings to possibly improve os-prober
to not call various OEM/recovery partitions Windows Vista

Comments/Problems:

I installed the system selecting 'dvorak' keyboard layout in the installer.
I selected encrypted lvm setup during partitioning
I entered a passphrase using dvorak keyboard layout

on boots of the machine, I need to enter the passphrase using qwerty keyboard
layout in order to get access to my root filesystem.

I guess some setting isn't fully transferred from the installer to the right
place in the installed system.

I do have dvorak layout when it reaches the login prompt.

Package: installation-reports

I installed debian squeeze from netinstall rc2-cd on a Lenovo ThinkPad
SL510. Both network interfaces (eth + wlan) are detected, but not
supported due to non-free drivers. Setup provides the possibility to
add the needed drivers using an usb-stick. Setup asked for the
following files:

eth: rtl8168d-1.fw
wlan: iwlwifi-1000-1.ucode iwlwifi-1000-2.ucode iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode

The files iwlwifi-1000-1.ucode and iwlwifi-1000-2.ucode don't exist,
setup though asks for all three. So I copied the following files on
the usb-stick:
rtl8168d-1.fw
iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode

and I copied iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode to iwlwifi-1000-1.ucode and
iwlwifi-1000-2.ucode

The files are successfully copied to /lib/firmware, but the
network interfaces still don't work.

I finally finished the installation without a network, and installed the
packages firmware-iwlwifi_0.28_all.deb and firmware-realtek_0.28_all.deb
using the usb-stick after the first reboot.

Everything worked fine up to the point of creating the root ext3
filesystem. Then a kernel BUG occurred, and the installer remained stuck
at a blue screen (with white underbar). The system is still responsive;
I can switch to the other terminals and poke around, but the installer
is horked.

The console log, recorded via serial cable, is attached.

Note that this error does not occur with testing/unstable installers.

Comments/Problems:

Initial boot was somewhat problematic, as the system appeared to freeze after a
few lines of kernel output. Since keys such as Caps and Num Lock still reacted
and the last message was about disabling the boot console, I surmised that it
switched to another output such as serial or ATI instead of the Creator 3D to
which the monitor was attached.

The solution was to retry with boot net video=atyfb:off. The rest of the
installation process worked flawlessly.

Booting into the installed system left me without a text console again, luckily
I had a X desktop installed which came up just fine. Then I was able to add the
above option to the SILO configuration which finally solved the problem.

Actually the network does not come up automatically, but that is a different
problem unrelated to the installation process (NetworkManager crashes on
startup).

Boot after installing wheezy results in scrambled screen. (unreadable, looks
like noise) (console, no xorg, or desktop options)

Installing from squeeze and upgrading results in the same problem. However
booting with the older 2.6 kernel worked fine, (3.0 didn't)

After installing xorg and fglrx (without gnome yet booting to console, or later
booting to gdm) 3.0 also works fine.

Possibly the radeon driver in the kernel is no good and when fglrx takes over
it works fine? (works fine to booting to console, or booting to gdm)

Comments/Problems:

Three issues:

=== #1 ===

There was an (I think) bogus error dialog that popped up
when partitioning the disks:

I asked the installer to use the entire disk and partition
it as it sees fits (LVM, encryption, no separate /home etc.).

It created:

  SCSI1 (0, 0, 0) (sda) - 80.0 GB ATA FUJITSU etc.
#1 32.3 kBApple
#21.0 MB B K bootuntitled
#3 256.0 MB F ext2untitled /boot
#4 79.8 GB K crypto untitled (sda4_crypt)
 25.1 kBFREE SPACE

Then when I confirmed that it looked ok to me and I
wanted to continue, the following error popped up:

NewWorld boot partition was found. The yaboot boot loader
requires an Apple_Bootstrap partition at least 819200 bytes
in size, using the HFS Macintosh file system.
Go back to the menu and resume partitioning?

This I found a bit confusing. There was a previous install
of OSX on the drive, but I asked the installer to wipe the
entire disk (which it did afaict) and just put debian on it,
so I didn't really know what to do with that dialog.

As it turns out, everything worked just fine if I ignore it.
yaboot boots perfectly into the kernel.

=== #2 ===

If I'm not mistaken, the ATI RV350 Mobility Radeon 9600 M10
graphics card on this machine should be perfectly capable of
running gnome-shell with free drivers. While there was no
problem booting into the system and starting X, gnome-shell
falls back into GNOME2-style fallback mode. It seems to me
that somehow the graphics card is not set up correctly from
the start. (I haven't had time to find out if it can be
configured right to make this work yet with the free driver,
so possibly there's no issue here at all; would appreciate
any comments regarding this if someone knows more).

=== #3 ===

The b43legacy wifi adaptor doesn't seem to work properly with
the latest wpasupplicant (works fine with WEP though). I guess
this is not an installer issue though.

Comments/Problems:

I used VirtualBox to install a Squeeze guest VM. The configuration had
three NICs: eth0 and eth1 are internal networks (with no DHCP) and
eth2 is NAT'd with DHCP. Even though I selected eth2 in the installer,
DHCP failed. I went back into the VM configuration and disabled eth0
and eth1, leaving eth2 with the NAT active. I was then able to
install. Afterwards I shut down, re-enabled eth0 and eth1, booted, and
fixed up udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and
/etc/network/interfaces and everything worked fine.

I wonder if there is something in the installer that prevents the
third interface from being able to successfully get an address via
DHCP. (I didn't try doing the same but with only two interfaces: one
with NAT and DHCP and the other without as I have successfully
installed in that configuration before on physical hardware.)

Hi,

thank you for submitting installation reports, much appreciated.

Comments/Problems:

steps to reproduce:
0. possibly required: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda count=1 to erase existing
partitions
1. load all components about partitioning
2. when partitioning select loop partition table
3. select /dev/sda as only root partition (no swap)
4. select ext4 filesystem
5. confirm everything untill the installer start to make the filesystem

As a result it freezes for a while, mkfs.ext4 on other virtual terminal didn't
help.
If you reboot the machine and select resulting partition without formatting,
you will end up unable to install the bootloader. (can't remember the error
message)

I guess, the problem is caused by mke2fs executable, than it must be
reproduceable on any hardware with same partition layout. The problem was
reproduced by other user on completely different machine.

There were several problems with my install using a testing netinstaller
method.

1. I selected expert gui install and once the gtk screen loaded, the mouse and
keyboard didn't work. I tried booting with the mouse connected into the ps/2
slot and usb. Neither worked. So, I reverted to expert install.

2. The install tasks screen was unreadable. Next to the selections, there were
just random characters.

3. My windows XP was not put into the grub menu even though it was detected and
I was asked if I wanted it added.

4. I have an nvidia video card and gnome 3 has missing letters on the screen
(see bug 636874)

Looks highly unlikely. The only proejct there that looks active is

Now maybe some components of it could be packaged and somehow be useful.
 No idea.

is IPFire also uClibc based?

Dear Maintainer,

I recently re-installed after replacing a drive on macmini3,1 which worked
nearly flawlessly except
that I needed to drop to a shell and install gptsync and run it during the now
we'll reboot dialog at
the end. I believe this is needed if anything was changed in partitioning. Of
course, one may run gptsync
from rEFIt or the Mac OS X installer instead, but since gptsync is packaged and
works fine it would be
great to just run it.

I note that guided partitioning used a biosgrub partition, which is needed for
bios compatibility mode
on mac hardware, from what I gather. The installer also selected grub-pc, which
would be correct for
bios compatibility -- however, the MBR needs to be correct for (at least) the
default Apple bootloader
to try. I had rEFIt installed on a USB key, and was installing from a
(different) USB key but wanted to do
away with rEFIt (and OS X) for this one.

Otherwise, the installer worked great, and continues to look better and better.

Hi,

thank you for submitting bug reports concering debian-installer, much
appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are very old and/or
- they are wishlist but rather special + exotic and not have been acted on for
years. (See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/wishlist-bugs/ why it's often useful to
close wishlist bugs.)

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - and that's often better, as the bug
log will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger

When asked to enter the root password, I chose 'Go back' to be able
to load the network-console. The menu item 'Download installer
components' is present, but selecting it eventually just causes d-i
to ask me for the root password — confusing unless you know what's
going on.

I suggest that the menu item be hidden if the debconf priority is
'high' and only shown if it's set to 'medium'. Or maybe the
installer components could be temporarily lowered from high to
medium if selected explicitly?

Dear Maintainer,

I try to install Wheezy on a new machine, I downloaded the
debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso [1] build at 29-May-2012 17:31

During the base system installation I get an error on installing busybox
(I don't know if there is a problem on the CD or CD-drive or there is a
problem on .iso image building fase, I have only one rw CD and I have
only try to do a remastering of it without new results).

I have try more time to do the installation but I have always the same
error. I have try to pass to next step: configure the apt system, but
without the base system you cannot do that... or better you can do that
if you push the Previous button when you get the message like this
You must install the base system before to proceed, so if you push the
Previous button at that point the apt system configuration start and
you can also go to download the system from the net... until something
go in error (because the base system is not installed completely).

Finally I have download the Squeeze net CD, and installed testing
starting from stable.

Ciao
Davide

Debian installer will allow you to complete an install without ever visiting
the configure users section and no warning. This will result in a system
installed with no way to log in except booting with init=/bin/sh

I would suggest that there be a warning, and perhaps have NO password for root
under this situation rather than root:*: in shadow -- the warning would be
particularly nice, as I had begun an install in a location that has slow access
and I can not stay at for an extended period of time and enabled the remote-ssh
method to continue. when I resumed, I thought I had already visited the users
section but had not. I found this out after I rebooted, which resulted in the
necessity of scheduling another trip to the location simply to set a root
password and allow logins to the system.

Package: debian-installer
Version: all versions

Environment: - Dell Latitude 8100
 - Dell Latitude C640

 - Debian Wheezy (testing) / Debian Squeeze (stable) / Debian Lenny
(oldstable)

The Dell Latitude 8100 and C640 provide an optional floppy drive to be
installed in the drive bay or connected to the parallel port.
Nevertheless, if the floppy drive is not installed/connected, the
debian-installer will hang forever at the network detection, despite the fact
that the floppy drive is disabled in the BIOS.

end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0 is reported in /var/log/syslog

This behavior shows in all tested versions of debian-installer, regardless if
the installation is started via the network or cd/dvd.

This leaves the user unable to install Debian if now floppy drive is available!

Rgds,
Klaus

(where it works). I have put vmlinuz, initrd, preseed file and iso image in
root. During installation, first everything works well: hd-media is mounted,
preseed file is found etc. But soon i get error failed to mount /dev/sdb:
Device or resource busy. Trying to mount it manually yields same error. This
is no good as I have a late_command in preseed that copies some files from
hd-media that need to be on target.

This worked fine in squeeze, with the same physical stick formatted the same
way from the same computer (ofcourse replacing files to match wheezy).

Hi,

thank you for submitting bug reports concering debian-installer, much
appreciated.

I read through all the bugs mentioned here (and I'm sure they were read by
several people at the time they were submitted) and am closing them now as/if
- they (finally) indicated success and/or
- I know from first hand experience that the functionality is working in
Wheezy and/or
- they only contained very little information and/or
- they contained user errors and/or
- they have been from a development phase where things were not stable and/or
- they are very old and/or
- they are wishlist but rather special + exotic and not have been acted on for
years. (See http://blog.liw.fi/posts/wishlist-bugs/ why it's often useful to
close wishlist bugs.)

If I've closed a bug incorrectly please do reply (it's easy to reopen and I'll
do if requested) or just file a new one - and that's often better, as the bug
log will be clearer and shorter and not contain cruft.

cheers,
Holger
