Status of l10n uploads....

2014-09-21 Thread Christian PERRIER
As requested by Cyril on IRC, sending this by mail:

I might upload a few more packages for l10n in the upcoming
daysunless that interferes too much with release plans.

These are the ones that recently got a few string changes so it's hard
to really anticipate when translators send updates. My rough plan is
to leave them a few days and then upload .

affected packages are: partman-basicfilesystems partman-iscsi
partman-efi partman-lvm plus tzsetup but, there, chances are lower
than updates come on

Yeah, that works for me too. I wasn't in a hurry to push this until
someone had actually tested the patch either (and I got buried again
and didn't get to that myself), but I know that what it was _intended_
to do really works, so if it's been tested now, getting it into the
dailies for wider testing seems like a good plan.

  Cheers,
  Ron

Yup, I think that would do it.

I can do additional sanity testing of the daily build after the patches
are applied, but already did pretty extensive testing on the netboot
image yesterday with the patches applied.

Thanks!

Do you have numbers about this? Perhaps we could do something to make GNOME fit
on a CD.

Ok, thanks for the explanation.

I understand your dilemma.
Since this is outside my knowledge of expertise I can't asses the consequences
of switching to a different glibc implementation nor offer a better idea.

For my specific use case I can probably switch to the non-static version of
busybox, although that doesn't resolve the issue reported here.
I'd still be willing to test whatever solution you decide to implement.

Cheers,

Bug#712907: grub-installer: No longer installs automatically on a normal machine with one hard drive

I got feedback from one of these normal people doing a wheezy install.
The dialog instructed him to use /dev/sda if he wants to install GRUB
to the first hard disk. But that was wrong! Since this was a USB-
booted install, /dev/sda was the install media and /dev/sdb his first
hard disk.

grub-installer actually pre-filled the dialog with "/dev/sdb", meaning
the code to not-install to USB media and guess something else, had
worked correctly in this instance.

There's a possibility that this has led to install reports implicating
grub-installer, in which the code perhaps worked as intended but it was
only the user's responses to wrong information that caused an issue.

On 14:22, Cyril Brulebois wrote:

Yes, in jessie d-i there's now a preceding dialog that shows a list
of devices and their identity. I think this is a great solution to
the above problem.

The problem here, affecting Debian Edu and AFAIK any preseed install,
was that the new dialog defaults to 'Enter device manually' and the
automated installer chooses that option. Therefore we see the original
manual input dialog.

During manual installs, *sometimes* something other than 'Enter
device manually' is selected by default. We just need to figure out
why that didn't happen in Petter's situation.

Was /dev/sda the first hard disk in this case? Does grub-mkdevicemap
in /target call it (hd0)? What is the full conents of /proc/partitions?
grub-installer can log extra stuff to syslog if you uncomment some of
the debug options at the top of the file.

(We really should have jenkins.d.o redirect syslog to the virtual serial
port, log it to a file and include it among the build artifacts. I
think some of the Jenkins jobs do that, but not this one).

This _is_ a glibc problem, and it can be trivially demonstrated by writing
a tiny program that calls, say, getaddrinfo() on its argument. When built
statically it always returns NOTFOUND, without any attempt to load any
nss modules or make dns queries or even do a /etc/hosts lookup.

More, I don't think reassigning it to glibc will do any good either, because
static linking has been discoraged there for ages.

I'm thinking about building busybox-static against uclibc. This means
compiling uclibc from uclibc-source during build time, but it is not much
more work than, say, compiling qemu (which also needs to link statically,
but has additional prob because it links with glib which can't be mixed
with uclibc). But anyway it will be a much bigger change than I'd like
to implement here.

If anyone has better idea please share.

Thanks,

/mjt

Any news on this bug?

When I look at the diff from 1.22.0-6 to 1.22.0-7 it indeed doesn't seem likely
that the issue is in busybox itself.
But when you look at the changelog of (e)glibc since 1.22.0-6 was released
there has been a new upstream release (2.19) and various patches relating to
dns resolving (as far as I can understand it).

Maybe this should be reassigned to (e)glibc?

Well, I don't know anything about Debian Edu, but I'm pretty sure
there's another prompt before that in non-Edu, where devices are

This is very bad from a usability point of view, as normal people are
not expected to know device paths.

Bug#762342: task-cinnamon-desktop: Please turn on display of Cinnamon desktop task

Please turn on display of the Cinnamon desktop task. I have tested
building Jessie live images with Cinnamon included and it seems to
already provide a usable desktop. It would be useful for testers to
be able to see Cinnamon so they can try it and help shake out any
remaining bugs between now and the freeze.

Thanks,
Ben

Looks like I could just blindly apply both patches, squashing them and
crediting both of you then?

It was low-priority (especially since untested) and I wasn't too keen on
spending time on it, but if we have success reports, merging looks like
a good idea.

No, it looks like you did everything right afaics :)

That was a blind and untested patch, working backward from what I'd
hand-hacked in place to get it working for me, at the end of a long
day, and the first time I'd ever even looked at this code ...

It looks like I read $(TEMP_NETBOOT_DIR)/$(BOOT_SCREEN_DIR) wrong in
the surrounding code and assumed BOOT_SCREEN_DIR only had the
"/boot-screens" part in it. Or at least that's the only thing I can
think I must have done, since now that you've pointed, and I'm looking
at it again, your version of that link definitely looks like the right
one to me.

Indeed amd64/netboot.cfg has:
BOOT_SCREEN_DIR = $(NETBOOT_PATH)/boot-screens/

Only the ia64 version appears to define or use it how I used it there.

Thanks for actually testing this and sending a fixed patch!

  Ron
