I don't see any permission problems in here, but indeed, mdadm is
unable to complete the process.

Since this has nothing to do with the installer really, -- you're
trying to assemble the array manually using mdadm and it fails,
I'm reassigning this bugreport to mdadm package.

However, since I don't have hardware where I can test this, I'm
tagging this as "help", -- because I can't debug it myself. Maybe
someone with the hardware will be able to understand what's going
on.

BTW, does /dev/md/ directory exists?

Thanks,

/mjt

Doh. That one escaped my attention when this message was added.

We usually avoid hardcoding "Debian" and this is probably one of the
very rare cases where we failed. The message was added in a bit of a
hurry recently and that failed to be catched by the review:-(

Sadly, I'd prefer us not to change this now.as it will require
Yet Another Round of translation updateswhich takes weeks to
achieve.

I'd prefer something like "If you continue to install in UEFI
mode, it might be difficult to reboot the machine into any BIOS-mode
operating systems later" and avoid "the distro" or anything like
that. The output of "lsb_release -si" is likely to not work.

But even just dropping "Debian" does not guarantee we can easily fix
translations as it is likely that, for some languages, dropping the
distro name wouldn't be enough.

Bug#777166: Please consider not hard coding the name "Debian" into error messages

This machine's firmware has started the installer in UEFI mode but
it looks like there may be existing operating systems already
installed using "BIOS compatibility mode". If you
continue to install Debian in UEFI mode, it might be difficult to
reboot the machine into any BIOS-mode operating systems later.

Please consider replacing "Debian" with `lsb_release -si` or similar
so that people installing other distros based on debian don't get a
message about a different operating system than the one they are
installing.

Package: console-data
Version: 2:1.12-2 (wheezy & jessie)

Package: console-setup
Version: 1.88 (wheezy), 1.116 (jessie)

The following bug can be reproduced on Debian Wheezy and Debian Jessie, tested
on AMD64.

Preamble:
I've set up a clean system via debootstrap and want to set it up using chroot.
For configuring, I'd like to use debconf (the backend database, not the
conference of course).
For setting up the correct keyboard on TTY (not ssh), in my case it's
"de-latin1", I figured out "two and a half" way to do it the correct way with
correct handling of debconf backend. I'll explain the ways and the problems
below.

Helpers:
- check and fix database for consistency: /usr/share/debconf/fix_db.pl
- manual package reconfiguration: dpkg-reconfigure -plow
- export of manual selections: debconf-get-selections | grep ^console >
selections.txt
- import of manual selections: debconf-set-selections < selections.txt
- cleanup and purge package: apt-get purge

===

Way 1: console-data
1. apt-get purge console-data console-common
2. /usr/share/debconf/fix_db.pl
3. apt-get install console-data console-common
4. dpkg-reconfigure -plow console-data
5. debconf-get-selections | grep ^console > console.txt
6. apt-get purge console-data console-common

Then I preload the manual settings to the database (with checking the DB for
consistency first):
1. /usr/share/debconf/fix_db.pl
2. debconf-set-selections < console.txt
3. apt-get install console-data console-common
Result: "Looking for keymap to install: NONE"

Okay, that didn't work... Even after this didn't work:
"DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive dpkg-reconfigure console-data"

===

So here's the work-around, which I call "and a half":

Way 1.5: console-data with console-common
1. echo console-common console-data/keymap/policy select Select keymap from
full list | debconf-set-selections
2. echo console-common console-data/keymap/full select de-latin1 |
debconf-set-selections
3. DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive dpkg-reconfigure console-data
Yep, this one works... Is this acceptable or bad a work-around?

===

Way 2: console-setup
After installing console-setup, exporting the selection and purging the
package, I've preloaded the settings again:
1. debconf-set-selections <<\EOF
 console-setup console-setup/codesetcode string Lat15
 console-setup console-setup/codeset47 select # Latin1 and Latin5 - western
Europe and Turkic languages
 console-setup console-setup/fontsize-fb47 select 8x16
 console-setup console-setup/fontsize string 8x16
 console-setup console-setup/charmap47 select UTF-8
 console-setup console-setup/store_defaults_in_debconf_db boolean true
 console-setup console-setup/fontsize-text47 select 8x16
 console-setup console-setup/fontface47select VGA
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/unsupported_config_layout
 boolean true
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/store_defaults_in_debconf_db
 boolean true
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/modelcodestring pc105
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/unsupported_layout
boolean true
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/layoutcode string de
keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/compose select No compose key
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/modelselect Generic
105-key (Intl) PC
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/variant select German
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/altgrselect The default
for the keyboard layout
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select de
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/switch select No temporary
switch
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/unsupported_config_options
 boolean true
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/unsupported_options
boolean true
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/toggle select No toggling
 keyboard-configuration keyboard-configuration/ctrl_alt_bkspboolean false
EOF
2. apt-get install console-setup
Wow, keyboard works, BUT: console-setup didn't read the correct font (wrong
face & size). I can reconfigure it ma

Buffalo Linkstation support in debian installer

2015-02-05 Thread Michael Walle

Hi,

Could you have a look at the issues #744714, #744715 and #744716? These
add support for the Buffalo Linkstation (ARM/kirkwood) to the debian
installer. There is already support for it in the debian kernel and in
the flash-kernel package in jessie. SO there is everything to run debian
on this box, but no installer image atm.

Unfortunately, the patches included in the issues never got merged. They
were already reviewed by Martin Michlmayr. Is there a chance that these
minor patches will still make it into the debian jessie installer?

Bug#777140: Using mdadm to install Debian on Intel RST RAID array stopped working between Wheezy 7.8 and Jessie RC1

2015-02-05 Thread Benjamin Black
Package: debian-installer
Version: used in Debian GNU/Linux Jessie-DI-rc1 "Jessie" - Official RC
amd64 CD Binary-1 20150109-01:06 image

My UEFI motherboard has an Intel RST chip on it, which I use to set up a
pair of SSD drives in a RAID-0 array. I have successfully installed Debian
Wheezy on this array in the past, using an expert set up and some manual
configuration during the install. I tried repeating that process using the
Jessie RC1 installer, and it failed.

For Wheezy, I used the image Debian GNU/Linux 7.8.0 "Wheezy" - Official
amd64 CD Binary-1 20150110-14:43

For Jessie, I used the image Debian GNU/Linux Jessie-DI-rc1 "Jessie" -
Official RC amd64 CD Binary-1 20150109-01:06

Both images were written to a USB stick, and both installers were booted in
UEFI mode.

To do the installation, I run through the first few steps of the expert
install, up to and including detecting disks. At that point, I switch to
the console (Alt-F2), to assemble and start the software arrays. First I
load the kernel modules for RAID, which also loads the md_mod module, and
then I execute mdadm to assemble and start the arrays.

When I do this in Wheezy, it successfully builds the arrays and starts them:

~ # modprobe raid0
~ # mdadm --assemble --scan --verbose
mdadm: looking for devices for further assembly
mdadm: /dev/sdb is identified as a member of /dev/md/imsm0, slot -1.
mdadm: /dev/sda is identified as a member of /dev/md/imsm0, slot -1.
mdadm: added /dev/sda to /dev/md/imsm0 as -1
mdadm: added /dev/sdb to /dev/md/imsm0 as -1
mdadm: Container /dev/md/imsm0 has been assembled with 2 drives
mdadm: looking in container /dev/md127
mdadm: found match on member /md127/0 in /dev/md127
mdadm: Started /dev/md/Boot_0 with 2 devices

However, following the same steps in Jessie, mdadm fails to start the array
because of some file permission problem:

~ # modprobe raid0
~ # mdadm --assemble --scan --verbose
mdadm: looking for devices for further assembly
mdadm: /dev/sdb is identified as a member of /dev/md/imsm0, slot -1.
mdadm: /dev/sda is identified as a member of /dev/md/imsm0, slot -1.
mdadm: added /dev/sda to /dev/md/imsm0 as -1
mdadm: added /dev/sdb to /dev/md/imsm0 as -1
mdadm: Container /dev/md/imsm0 has been assembled with 2 drives
mdadm: cannot open device /dev/md/imsm0: No such file or directory

However, following the same steps in Jessie, mdadm fails to start the array
because of some file permission problem:

Consequently, while I can proceed to the next installer step in Wheezy,
because the system sees the RAID array and I can create partitions on it,
in Jessie, the array is never started, no /dev/md/ device is created, and I
cannot continue.

Thanks for adding me to the group! I thought a bit about taking
caring about d-i-n-a, and I think I will do that indeed. :-)

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I want to install Debian/testing on a new computer.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I upgraded the PXE installer for testing using di-netboot-assistant,
then I tried to install with it.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

I expected the installer to run.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

The installer failed with the error "vesamenu.c32 is not a COM32R image"
(written from memory).

When I compare the vesamenu.c32 files in the testing and daily
installers with the same files from stable and some Ubuntu version there
are some differences:

* The working files have a size about 150kB and are "COM executable"
* The problematic files have a size of 26kB and are "ELF 32-bit LSB shared
object"

This is an example of a good file:
http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-amd64/20140316/images/netboot/debian-installer/amd64/boot-screens/vesamenu.c32

This is a bad file:

eventually sets the search path, so this is a catch-22 that somehow
needs to be broken.

pxelinux.0 should probably not need to load ldlinux.c32 at this
stage until the user made a selection in the menu.

If I symlink ldlinux.c32 into place, then it loads all boot-screen
files (according to the tftp logs), but before displaying a menu, it
then looks for libcom32.c32, which it does not
find, and hence fails to load
  ::/debian-installer/daily/i386/boot-screens/vesamenu.c32

Symlinking this file then exposes libutil.c32 as missing.

Note that the problem exists also with the pxelinux.0 file from the
pxelinux package (which you could be using instead anyway…)

Even if I skip the menu and tell clients to use
::/debian-installer/daily/i386/pxelinux.0 instead, the files
ldlinux.c32, libcom32.c32 and libutil.c32 are being sought from
::/debian-installer/daily/i386 instead of ./boot-screens, where they
live.

So far I have been unable to find *anything* to make
di-netboot-assistant produce a usable TFTP directory layout, even
for a single architecture, without having to hand-edit files for
specific clients. Hence I think this is release-critical.

Package: di-netboot-assistant
Version: 0.38a
Severity: serious

The pxelinux.0 file installed by di-netboot-assistant does not work.
Before it even asks for pxelinux.cfg/* files, it seeks ldlinux.c32
(cf. #750586), but the menu defined in pxelinux.cfg/default
eventually sets the search path, so this is a catch-22 that somehow
needs to be broken.

pxelinux.0 should probably not need to load ldlinux.c32 at this

then looks for libcom32.c32, which it does not
find, and hence fails to load
  ::/debian-installer/daily/i386/boot-screens/vesamenu.c32

Symlinking this file then exposes libutil.c32 as missing.

Note that the problem exists also with the pxelinux.0 file from the
pxelinux package (which you could be using instead anyway…)

Even if I skip the menu and tell clients to use

This is a bad file:
http://ftp.fr.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-amd64/20140802/images/netboot/debian-installer/amd64/boot-screens/vesamenu.c32

Kim Hansen

 .
   * Non-maintainer upload.
   * Fix package for jessie. The patch has been mostly provided by Jonas
Smedegaard and should fix all issues related to new syslinux:
 - Lookup pxelinux.0 in /usr/lib/PXELINUX (not only
   /usr/lib/syslinux).
 - Lookup only BIOS binaries (not accidentally include EFI binaries).
 - Install core modules in tftpd debian-installer dir.
 - Keep vesamenu and menu modules in sync with PXELINUX.
 - Enable jessie releases.
For details, see the discussion in the bugs closed. Thanks to Jonas
Smedegaard and Martin F Krafft. (Closes: #759424, closes: #776565)
