Alternatively, you could use release version numbers rather than code names:

0.6.3-1.3-1~Debian7 (rather than wheezy), and
0.6.3-1.3-1~Debian8 (rather than jessie)

After some attempts, I discovered the html tree of the working demo is
not the same as the html generated by buildone.sh.
I don't want to change the html generated (no skills, too risky, not
enought time, etc.)
So there will be no hover effects or even/odd colored lines.

However, I improved lightly the CSS in order to have better looking
 (in my opinion). You can compare:
- current table: http://stephane.yaal.fr/tmp/installationguide2/ch03s03.html
- new table: http://stephane.yaal.fr/tmp/installationguide3/ch03s03.html

A patch writted against svn (#69699) is attached to the e-mail.

If everyone thinks it's ok, feel free to commit it.

Cheers

Awesome, thank you!

You're of course right. Didn't think about that.

I don't really know how to solve that though. If one have chosen to
run latest on Wheezy, but wants to run released on Jessie, I probably
have to force a manual downgrade.

Thanx for the help! This sounds like a very good plan!

Ok, since Kibi is offline a while, I could commit something to the
website. So please provide some detailed info.
Into which category of the announcement should that be added:
Improvements in this release of the installer
or
Hardware support changes
I guess the first, right?

Exact wording:
  * Add i386 UEFI support
  * Create *non*-UEFI i386 netinst images for old Mac machines

Correct?

This wasn't integrated into the errata for RC1, so is it worse to
integrate it now for RC2?
If yes, please provide me with some wording, since I am not a native english

I suppose the big problem you have is that jessie is alphabetically lower than
wheezy.

> My question now is: How do I setup/change the versioning so that all
> of these upgrade paths work?

Well you can solve the wheezy to jessue upgradesm but I don't think you
can solve wheezy-daily => jessie, since that really is a downgrade.

> Doing this in intermediate steps isn't a problem, but I prefer not
> to use epochs if possible (even if that would be the simplest
> solution :)...

If you were to do this:

Change 0.6.3-1.3-1~wheezy to 0.6.3-1.3-2~wheezy
Change 0.6.3-1.3-1~jessie to 0.6.3-1.3-2
Change 0.6.3-38-7d90f5-wheezy to 0.6.3-39-7d90f5~wheezy
Change 0.6.3-35-7d90f5-jessie to 0.6.3-39-7d90f5

So always use ~wheezy suffix when building for wheezy and use no suffix
when building for jessie, and bump the main packaging version up to make
the new versions higher than they were before.

UPGRADE PATHSTATUS  VERSION COMPARE
wheezy => wheezy-daily  = YES   0.6.3-1.3-2~wheezy lt
0.6.3-39-7d90f5~wheezy
wheezy => jessie= YES   0.6.3-1.3-2~wheezy lt 0.6.3-1.3-2
wheezy => jessie-daily  = YES   0.6.3-1.3-2~wheezy lt 0.6.3-39-7d90f5
wheezy-daily => jessie  = NO0.6.3-39-7d90f5~wheezy lt 0.6.3-1.3-2
wheezy-daily => jessie-daily= YES   0.6.3-39-7d90f5~wheezy lt
0.6.3-39-7d90f5
jessie => jessie-daily  = YES   0.6.3-1.3-2 lt 0.6.3-39-7d90f5

So by only using ~wheezy on the wheezy versions and using nothing
on jessie, the jessie version is ALWAYS higher, since ~anything is
automatically less than nothing (this is why backports and such use that
in their version suffix).

The only unsolvable case is the one that is an actual downgrade, which
there is no way to solve automatically. If someone wants to do that
they will have to force downgrading to the older version.

Bug#781289: swap on encrypted volume not mounted

2015-03-27 Thread Kevin Price
Hi Karsten:

Am 27.03.2015 um 15:57 schrieb Karsten Merker:
> Could you provide further information that would enable us to
> reproduce the problem?

Yes. Sry for having submitted this in a hurry without having taken a
closer look. Meanwhile I figured out what went wrong:

I installed from a cdrom iamge on a KVM/QEMU virtual machine with cdrom
as well as target storage connected via a virtio-scsi controller.

(Snippets from the libvirt vm definition xml:
[...]

[...]

[...])

The early installer stage does not find the CD it's installing from nor
the target storage, until I connect a virtual USB drive containing
virtio-modules-3.16.0-4-amd64-di_3.16.7-ckt2-1_amd64.udeb. The USB drive
then becomes sda, then the virtio-scsi ctrl is found, including the
cdrom and making the target storage become sdb. The installer generates
(fs|crypt)tab referencing sdb, but on next reboot w/o the USB drive,
target storage becomes sda.

Not sure if it would work O.K. with LVM, b/c I partitioned like this:
/dev/sda1   ext4 /boot
/dev/sda2 (encrypted with /dev/urandom) swap
/dev/sda3 (luks encrypted)  ext4 /

I fixed my vm by rewriting (crypt|fs)tab, referencing partitions in the
/dev/disk/by-id/... style, and running update-initramfs -u using a
rescue system (called grml, fwiw).

Probably I could've worked around this installer bug using a floppy
drive for the udeb instead of a usb drive, at the cost of having to add
a virtual floppy drive. Does anyone voluntarily use floppies (even
virtual ones) in 2015? Not sure if win. ;)

I suspect that every machine is affected whose storage controller is not
included in the installer if it's installed with encrypted partitions
when the user chooses to use a /dev/sdx drive that is detected before
the fixed storage. (Or just when some sdX drive happens to be present
prior to the /dev/sdX target storage for any reason, probably even if
installing from USB)

A good fix would be to make the installer generate (crypt|fs)tab
referencing all drives in a better suitable way; I'd recommend by-id.

Do you still need any of that? I'd reproduce IOT help troubleshoot.

> Could you also provide the exact URL of the installer image that

Sry I can't recall that, but I'm now trying rc2 from
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/jessie_di_rc2/amd64/iso-cd/debian-jessie-DI-rc2-amd64-netinst.iso

Package versioning and upgrades

2015-03-27 Thread Turbo Fredriksson
Since ZoL (ZFS On Linux) isn't yet in Debian GNU/Linux, I've been
doing my own packages for ZoL in that package repo.

This include changes to the installer (debian-installer, base-installer,
grub-installer, partman-target and partman-zfs). But because the Debian
GNU/Linux git repo refuses force pushes, they latest versions is now
in the ZoL GIT repo (https://github.com/zfsonlinux/debian-installers).

But I think I've painted myself into a corner regarding the upgrade
path.

I have four repos:

wheezy => The released ZoL version for Wheezy
wheezy-daily=> The GIT master releases of ZoL for Wheezy
jessie => The released ZoL version for Jessie
jessie-daily=> The GIT master releases of ZoL for Jessie

So basically, the packages in 'wheezy' and 'jessie' are identical,
except they're compiled on the different versions of Debian GNU/Linux.

Same for 'wheezy-daily' vs. 'jessie-daily'.

Identical, in the meaning that it uses the exact same codebase/version
and patch set of ZoL, just compiled for different libraries
on two different platform version.

But certain upgrade paths isn't working (which isn't much of a
surprise actually - didn't quite think this through I guess):

UPGRADE PATHSTATUS  VERSION COMPARE
wheezy => wheezy-daily  = YES   0.6.3-1.3-1~wheezy lt
0.6.3-38-7d90f5-wheezy
wheezy => jessie= NO0.6.3-1.3-1~wheezy lt 0.6.3-1.3-1~jessie
wheezy => jessie-daily  = YES   0.6.3-1.3-1~wheezy lt
0.6.3-35-7d90f5-jessie
wheezy-daily => jessie  = NO0.6.3-38-7d90f5-wheezy lt
0.6.3-1.3-1~jessie
wheezy-daily => jessie-daily= NO0.6.3-38-7d90f5-wheezy lt
0.6.3-35-7d90f5-jessie
jessie => jessie-daily  = YES   0.6.3-1.3-1~jessie lt
0.6.3-35-7d90f5-jessie

The versions here is the actually versions currently in the repository,
and the result (YES/NO) is the status of "dpkg --compare-versions".

My question now is: How do I setup/change the versioning so that all
of these upgrade paths work?

Doing this in intermediate steps isn't a problem, but I prefer not
to use epochs if possible (even if that would be the simplest
solution :)...

Bug#781344: debian-installer: Enable entering a local mirror name in 'mirror URL' menu as well as 'country' menu'

2015-03-27 Thread Wookey
Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

Currently it is possible to select 'Enter Manually' from the top of
the country list when choosing a debian mirror to netinstall from. A
user quite reasonably looks for this option when given the list of
mirrors, not when given the list of countries, so it should be
available there too.

Late, I know (sorry :-(), but we should also add some mention of:

 * i386 UEFI support
 * *non*-UEFI i386 netinst images for old Mac machines

in our docs. It's not the end of the world if it doesn't make the
announcement doc for RC2, though, and I'm still trying to map out
exactly which x86 Mac machines work and don't work with our UEFI
stuff. We'll need to add an extra link for the i386 Mac netinst too in
the web pages, and that'll be a PITA. :-/

I've just verified that #775235 (llvmpipe crash on i386 kvm) is still
a problem.

Priorities are set by the FTP team. A package's control file is only a
hint as to what its priority should be.

Bug#781309: libdebconfclient0: Priority is 'Optional' although being a dependency of base-passwd

2015-03-27 Thread Benoit Allard
Package: libdebconfclient0
Version: 0.192
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy 2.5

Dear Maintainer,

I believe the priority of the package libdebconfclient0 should be raised as it
is a hard-dependency of the base-passwd package.

Relevant part of the Debian Policy:

Packages must not depend on packages with lower priority values (excluding
build-time dependencies). In order to ensure this, the priorities of one or
more packages may need to be adjusted.

I believe a patch is not required, let me know otherwise.

Package: flash-kernel
Version: 3.33
Severity: normal

Hi,

I just installed flash-kernel but didn't have u-boot-tools installed. I
believe it's the initramfs trigger that failed with the following:

Generating boot script u-boot image... /usr/sbin/flash-kernel: 348:
/usr/sbin/flash-kernel: mkimage: not found
run-parts: /etc/initramfs/post-update.d//flash-kernel exited with return code
127
dpkg: error processing package initramfs-tools (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 initramfs-tools
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

That's easily resolved by installing the u-boot-tools package, but I would
have expected that do be a dependency in that case. I see that it's a
Suggests, but looks rather essential to me.

Thanks for considering.

Regards,
Martin
