I follow the instructions using dd to transfer the image to the USB drive, and all goes well. I can install, and it does so nicely. Okay As I try to copy a preseed.cfg file *to* the USB drive after dd the isohybrid image, it tells me variously that it's a read-only file system (ISO9660), or that it is write protected. The (error) messages that you get, boil down to You can not copy a file _into_ a single file. Anyone ever started from the netinst ISO image and added a preseed.cfg file? Yes. It is safe to assume that. After all the Internet is large. So the question Where is it documented? remains. Do a web search on How to modify a ISO 9660 image If it returns something that should go in the installation manual, let this mailinglist known. Re: Debian Installer Jessie RC 3 release
Hi, Christian PERRIER bubu...@debian.org (2015-05-25): Quoting Hideki Yamane (henr...@debian.or.jp): Hi, On Sun Apr 19, 2015 at 16:25:30 +0200, Cyril Brulebois wrote: Improvements in this release of the installer = * apt-setup: - Stop enabling backports by default (#764982). I've sent a patch to re-enabled it but comment out by default. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=785614 I'd be no harm for sane install and handy for users, IMO. Can we adopt it for point release? I'm not sure why dd@ and dr@ would be a better place to discuss this than the bug report itself. If that's for the lack of a reply, surely a week isn't that much a delay… I noticed that and first thought hey, that could be a good compromise between the pros and the cons. Still, I think we should also add a warning to users pointing them to the potential issues of enabling backports (see arguments developed in the relevant bug reports). Adding -boot in the loop so that Cyril gets better chances to see thisand then we decide what to do with Yamane-san's patch. I'll follow up to the bug report. Vagrant Cascadian vagr...@debian.org (2015-05-24): On 2015-05-24, Cyril Brulebois wrote: Vagrant Cascadian vagr...@debian.org (2015-05-20): The version of u-boot in experimental requires some changes for debian-installer to generate appropriate u-boot images. The mx6_cubox-i target which was not previously upstream, is now named mx6cuboxi upstream; I've updated the u-boot package accordingly with patches from mainline u-boot. It also supports the hummingboard-i1 and hummingboard-i2ex, not sure how to make that clear. I suppose I'm a bit surprised that there are no added lines for hummingboard-*? Both hummingboard and cubox-i use the new mx6cuboxi u-boot target, not sure where exactly to document that. They're nearly identical hardware, largely differing in physical form-factor; cubox-i is crammed into a tiny cube, hummingboard is your more typical dev board (in fact, virtually identical footprint to the raspberry pi). Sorry, I was a bit lazy yesterday… Now that I've looked at board/solidrun/mx6cuboxi/mx6cuboxi.c it seems one is supposed to distinguish between boards by toying with GPIOs (mx6cuboxi.c in u-boot), so nothing for d-i to worry about, as long as the user picks the right bits for the relevant device (e.g. the right SD-Card concatenateable images)? This means this list (including board → devices mapping) should be kept uptodate: https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/armhf/ch02s01.html#armhf-armmp-supported-platforms Does that make sense, or did I just lose myself in (h)arm-land? Re: Netinst with preseed
Charles Chambers ccha...@gmail.com writes: Hi, All: I'm trying to add a preseed.cfg to USB install media created with one of the isohybrid images. I follow the instructions using dd to transfer the image to the USB drive, and all goes well. I can install, and it does so nicely. As I try to copy a preseed.cfg file *to* the USB drive after dd the isohybrid image, it tells me variously that it's a read-only file system (ISO9660), or that it is write protected. The error message is actually about the fact that ISO 9660 is, by design, read-only. We use ISO 9660 because it's the standard format for CDs, so that's what ensures maximum compatibility. We could produce separate images for writing to USB sticks, using writable file systems, but the current approach gets us most of the usefulness of an image for USB sticks without needing double the resources for mirrors etc. When you copy one of our ISO images to USB, there's a bit of magic on the front that makes it look like you have a partitioned disk, but the data is still in ISO 9660 format, and that's how you access it, so it will not be writable. Anyone ever started from the netinst ISO image and added a preseed.cfg file? Look here: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Modify HTH Cheers, Phil. P.S. It occurs to me that one should be able to get away with adding a partition after copying it to the USB stick. Actually, I just tried that, and it seems to work (in that I have a new partition consuming the rest of the USB stick, while the ISO9660 partition is still intact, and check-sums check). I don't have a spare machine to try a test install on right now. Perhaps we should look into adding an extra partition to our images so that people can easily add files, such as preseeds and non-free firmware. That, combined with a check to see if such files exist, would let people preseed without all the bother of remastering the image. Of course, that would need us to choose a size and format for the partition, so perhaps just adding the check and letting people choose their own partition size would be enough -- we're not already doing that are we? -- |)| Philip Hands [+44 (0)20 8530 9560] HANDS.COM Ltd. |-| http://www.hands.com/http://ftp.uk.debian.org/ |(| Hugo-Klemm-Strasse 34, 21075 Hamburg,GERMANY signature.asc Description: PGP signature

It was hard to tell when to type s to bring it up, since I did not get the second beep that occurs when I boot up the Debian live CD and that I heard on the other machine I tested with. I used alt-f2 to get to another console, as mentioned in the installation guide. I tried raising volume and unmuting the sound card using amixer, but this id not work. I know that terminal worked because the poweroff command shut down the machine. I tested the same CD on our other computer and did get speech output. I note that I have been able to use a Debian Jessie live CD by first bringing up Orca, though I first find it useful to raise the volume via Gnome's sound settings. I can then bring up Speakup by going into the graphical terminal and using the relevant commands. This machine now runs Arch Linux, so I was able to run dmesg, lspci, lsmod, and amixer, as mentioned above. I shall apend the resulting output to this text. Uploaded 2015.04+dfsg1-2 to unstable, with one more change required to fix PandaBoard, updated patch: diff --git a/build/boot/arm/u-boot-image-config b/build/boot/arm/u-boot-image-config index 7e59b38..4d81b9d 100644 --- a/build/boot/arm/u-boot-image-config +++ b/build/boot/arm/u-boot-image-config @@ -5,12 +5,12 @@ # # Images from u-boot-imx MX53LOCO /usr/lib/u-boot/mx53loco/u-boot.imx 2 -MX6_Cubox-i /usr/lib/u-boot/mx6_cubox-i/SPL 2 /usr/lib/u-boot/mx6_cubox-i/u-boot.img 84 -Wandboard_Quad /usr/lib/u-boot/wandboard_quad/u-boot.imx 2 +MX6_Cubox-i /usr/lib/u-boot/mx6cuboxi/SPL 2 /usr/lib/u-boot/mx6cuboxi/u-boot.img 138 +Wandboard /usr/lib/u-boot/wandboard/SPL 2 /usr/lib/u-boot/wandboard/u-boot.img 138 # # Images from u-boot-omap BeagleBoneBlack /usr/lib/u-boot/am335x_boneblack/MLO 256 /usr/lib/u-boot/am335x_boneblack/u-boot.img 768 -PandaBoard /usr/lib/u-boot/omap4_panda/MLO 256 /usr/lib/u-boot/omap4_panda/u-boot.bin 768 +PandaBoard /usr/lib/u-boot/omap4_panda/MLO 256 /usr/lib/u-boot/omap4_panda/u-boot.img 768 # # Images from u-boot-sunxi A10-OLinuXino-Lime /usr/lib/u-boot/A10-OLinuXino-Lime/u-boot-sunxi-with-spl.bin 16 live well, vagrant signature.asc Description: PGP signature

Bug#784709: issue with os-prober

The extended partition looks different from the other, but the result of blkid under 3.2 is the same as 3.16. Yep, as explained by upstream, this bug in os-prober is due to a new feature in blkid from newer util-linux versions where it can now get info from partition tables as well as filesystems, so it succeeds getting information from the partition but the returned information does not contain the filesystem type so it returns an empty string. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=784709#44 -- bye, pabs https://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
