Bug#765976: aiming for 8.2: tzsetup: please don't offer time zone selection for Germany
Holger Levsen hol...@layer-acht.org (2015-08-10): On Montag, 10. August 2015, Cyril Brulebois wrote: Looking at the bug log, I see a patch, I see it applied in git, and all I see about this bug's not being fixed is: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=765976;msg=55 it's also mentioned in http://www.heise.de/open/artikel/Debian-8-0-Jessie-im- Kurztest-2620923.html and probably elsewhere. where you didn't exactly explain anything about why this patch is not or no longer sufficient, or what a new patch should look like. I have no idea, the only thing I know that Büsingen and the rest of Germany had a different time zone in 1983, for six months. Since then, the last 32 years, the times were always aligned. And that in spring 2014 I pointed this mistake out before it was in sid and then it was still uploaded - as Büsingen is obviously the correct german spelling of it(!)... since then, I kinda gave up and just whined on irc. Then you asked me to file this bug, I did, nothing happened, so I thought I'd ping this bug… So you have no idea why the patch you supplied in not sufficient, yet you're repeatedly laughing at us and pointing how much we're sucking for not fixing an issue that should have been fixed by your patch, which was applied? And you still call this “trivial”? I'm very much not following you here! So I suggest you stop bitching about how “trivial” and “hillarious” this bug is will do. I just cannot promise to not laugh, sigh, cry or giggle a bit when I see it or am being pointed at. But I'll promise to not mention this bug online in Debian forums anymore. Nice to see how you cut off the other part… you know, where one is supposed to be *contributing* when one wants to see something fixed. I'm really at a loss for words. It's not like you're a stranger to how an issue should be dealt with in Debian. I'm not sure why you're behaving this way… Maybe that's your way of trying to get someone to do the debugging and fixing for you. But I can assure you this is not motivating at all, quite the opposite! KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Then you asked me to file this bug, I did, nothing happened, so I thought I'd ping this bug… This appears to be a misunderstanding. Holger seems to be working on the assumption that the patch was not applied, whereas when I look at the git log I see that Christian committed that change on Oct 22 last year, and that the change was in the changelog as version 1:0.60 I've not checked when that got into an installer, but I guess it did quite a long time ago. The version in the current installer is 1:0.66 Presumably (judging from the fact that Holger's still talking about it) the patch didn't work for some reason. OK, so I just tried it with the debian-8.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso image, and Holger is certainly right (see screenshot attached). I note that there is only Berlin listed if I run this on the console: # grep DE /usr/share/tzsetup/tzmap DE Europe/Berlin Whereas there is mention of both in /var/lib/cdebconf/templates.dat in tzsetup/country/DE in the Choices: and Choices-C fields. I guess that's the cause of this bug. In tzsetup there is a line: zone=$(grep ^$CC /usr/share/tzsetup/tzmap | cut -d ' ' -f 2) which I suppose we were expecting to do the trick, but that's in an if's else branch, so I guess we're actually using the then branch instead. tzsetup has not been touched since 2009, so it's not been introduced recently there. Did anyone actually test that the patch did what we had hoped after Christian's commit? Bug#795100: os-prober: It hangs on kernel package upgrade, making impossible to generate a correct ramdisk
Package: os-prober Version: 1.65 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, today upgrading the kernel on a server having many FC connected disk I got grub-mount stuck when trying to mount a logical volume used by another machine. I got a process in D state, the ramdisk was not created, I had to stop apt-get by means of kill -9 and I was risking to have an unbootable server. I had to remove it to correctly complete the kernel upgrate. The server was installed selecting just SSH server in tasksel and I do not uderstand why this package is installed. I cannot understand why a server installation has to probe all available disk for other operating systems, a server is never installed as dual boot, and there is no reason to check for other OS, that's a desktop/laptop feature. Holger seems to be working on the assumption that the patch was not applied, whereas when I look at the git log I see that Christian committed that change on Oct 22 last year, and that the change was in the changelog as version 1:0.60 Holger commented on the patch Christian pushed: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=765976#45 so I /think/ he saw the patch had been applied… I've not checked when that got into an installer, but I guess it did quite a long time ago. The version in the current installer is 1:0.66 Certainly. In any version past [2014-11-02] which is the date where 1:0.60 entered testing. Those can be checked here: https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/News/2014/ https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/News/2015/ Presumably (judging from the fact that Holger's still talking about it) the patch didn't work for some reason. Presumably, given the silent reopen both Christian and I mentioned already: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=55;bug=765976 but with no explanations whatsoever. Holger's dancing around my questions in today's mails doesn't make it easier to understand what his point actually was… Did the patch get tested at the beginning? Did it work at some point? Regressed later? I have no idea at all (other than best guessing based on when components were updated as you did further down in your mail). OK, so I just tried it with the debian-8.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso image, and Holger is certainly right (see screenshot attached). Did anyone actually test that the patch did what we had hoped after Christian's commit? Presumably the bug reporter who submitted the patch, and tagged it as such? I'm also wondering: this will make all the corresponding translation bits out of date, thus disabling the translation here and there in the manual. I'm thus wondering who should work on updating them. It's not nice for translators to see a flurry of fuzzy entries just because of a CD - CD-ROM update which could have been processed more or less automatically for all languages. In most languages, CD-ROM has been kept as such, so it'd make sense to apply the same change in all those languages more or less automatically. A few others have translated the term, I guess we want the same standardization process there, possibly handled by translators themselves? The decision on which places should get the standard term is probably to be homogeneous across translations, though. Bug#795139: debian-installer: Softlink target path for /initrd.img is different from /vmlinuz
Package: debian-installer Severity: minor Dear Maintainer, This is a bug so minor, that I am embarassed to report it. It has, however, bugged me for some time now. After a fresh install of debian jessie, the softlinks from /initrd.img and /vmlinuz points to different locations: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Aug 10 22:20 initrd.img - /boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-4-amd64 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 Aug 10 22:20 vmlinuz - boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-4-amd64 Notice how one is to /boot (absolute path) and one is to boot (relative path). I would expect these to refer to the exact same boot path. Now, this shouldn't have any relevance unless one actually moves those links, but the difference could eventually make a difference (no pun intended). I don't know which one is more correct: /boot or boot. I also do not know exactly which package creates those links. I tried to search for them but I could not find any better package which is why I report it to debian-installer. -- System Information: Debian Release: stretch/sid APT prefers testing-updates APT policy: (500, 'testing-updates'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.0.0-2-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.utf8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I thought the ~/standardize_on_CD-ROM_as_cover-term.patch that I attached was the same file as I'd included in the body. I don't know where the other version comes from - I don't even know what kind of svn diff I'd need to do to get it. Re: Proposal: Drop ttf-cjk-compact, get fonts-droid
Hi! Kenshi Muto km...@debian.org (2015-07-22): This is a proposal to replace ttf-cjk-compact with fonts-droid for next (Stretch) debian-installer. Introduction: DroidSansFallback.ttf of fonts-droid package appears best choice for graphical debian-installer to show CJK - Chinese, Japanese, Korean -, because it is scalable font, quite small footprint (3939852 bytes), and enough legible. ttf-cjk-compact was born in 2005, to display CJK characters on graphical debian-installer. Due to lack of small scalable CJK font at 2005 and limited RAM disk size, I made a workaround font package ttf-compact-fonts (former name). This font package made a list of may use characters from d-i po files and some other packages, then rebuilt reduced font with the list by modifying other font packages; vlgothic, unfont, and arphic-uming. (ja.ttf: 197392 bytes, ko.ttf: 152000 bytes, zh.ttf: 1258276 bytes. total: 1607668 bytes.) Thanks for the detailed history, which matches what I've gathered while trying to update this package once in a while. :) After some tests, I believe it's time to use fonts-droid instead of ttf-cjk-compact. Test: - - screenshots: http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i-font/sc/ - - graphical netboot mini.iso: http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i-font/mini.iso (50MB) Step: 1. Modify fonts-android to provide fonts-android-udeb which has only DroidSansFallback.ttf. patch: http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i-font/fonts-android.diff → Uploaded to sid, reached stretch already. 2. After fonts-android-udeb is installed to the mirror, Modify d-i/installer to use fonts-droid-udeb instead of ttf-cjk-compact-udeb. patch: http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i-font/installer.diff → I've just performed some tests, and building + comparing a few screens for C, J, and K looks good to me. To be inexperienced eyes, the old glyphs for all 3 languages look a bit thiner and new ones a bit sharper, but sizes are similar. As usual, we can adjust the size if desired, on a per-language basis. (I find it a bit difficult to distinguish all details in Traditional Chinese for example, while Korean and Japanese don't seem that hard to “read” ;)). I'm seeing a size increase similar to what you're quoting: building netboot-gtk on amd64 means initrd.gz grows from 35 MB to 36 MB; unpacked, it goes from 105 MB to 108 MB. I agree this increase in worthwhile as maintaining the ttf-cjk-compact hack is quite a burden, and doesn't provide us with reasonable results, as some glyphs can regularly go missing… 3. Remove ttf-cjk-compact from unstable and testing. → We can ask for a removal from unstable once the next debian-installer upload is performed. I've added a note on my side. As usual, the removal will propagate to testing once it has happened on unstable, and once there are no more reverse dependencies. Pros: - d-i code gets smarter way. - most CJK characters will be shown correctly. - replacing ttf-cjk-compact with DroidSansFallback doesn't break other languages. (as far as I saw) - Chinese gets sans-serif. Cons: - increases +2MB for each graphical initrd. jessie-amd64/cdrom/gtk/initrd.gz: 25557641 - 281535694 hd-media/gtk/initrd.gz: 27747025 - 30340894 netboot/gtk/initrd.gz: 34425758 - 37539446 netboot/gtk/mini.iso: 49283072 - 52428800 - Some Japanese characters look bit funny. (I believe it is negligible for installer.) Note: - Noto family, brand-new Google's free and well-designed font, is too big. For example NotoSansCJK-Regular.ttc is 17MB. - DroidSansFallbackFull doesn't include Korean Hangul characters. Thanks for the detailed pros cons notes, that's much appreciated! Patch for debian-installer pushed a few minutes ago, it will be used for daily builds starting with the 2015-08-12 ones. (If anyone wonders, I've just removed the /git/d-i/ttf-cjk-compact.git repository from alioth, as it's not going to be used at all.) Mraw, KiBi. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#765976: aiming for 8.2: tzsetup: please don't offer time zone selection for Germany
Dear debian-boot people, this is a ping about applying the trivial patch to fix this hillarious bug. I'm hoping the fix will be uploaded to sid soon to make it possible to push it into the 8.2 point update, thus cc:ing the stable release managers, to make them aware of the issue too. You also might use DebConf15 as an opportunity to talk to people affected by this bug. I'm refraining from cc:ing debconf-discuss@ though ;-) cheers, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Oh well… apparently, the firmware setup screens don’t signal the watchdog either, so you can’t use that one for five minutes while the watchdog is enabled. This all points to buggy firmware. Again, details would have to come from Nik. Then I think this should be fixed in the firmware. Ben. -- Ben Hutchings I say we take off; nuke the site from orbit. Bug#765976: aiming for 8.2: tzsetup: please don't offer time zone selection for Germany
Sehr geehrter Holger, Holger Levsen hol...@layer-acht.org (2015-08-10): Dear debian-boot people, this is a ping about applying the trivial patch to fix this hillarious bug. I'm hoping the fix will be uploaded to sid soon to make it possible to push it into the 8.2 point update, thus cc:ing the stable release managers, to make them aware of the issue too. Looking at the bug log, I see a patch, I see it applied in git, and all I see about this bug's not being fixed is: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=765976;msg=55 where you didn't exactly explain anything about why this patch is not or no longer sufficient, or what a new patch should look like. Initial patch was at: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=765976#5 and tzmap.override was last touched in: | commit 6fe0cece30e4f93917f169a5c6d8d70ab0d5d11e | Author: Christian Perrier bubulle@Êebian.org | Date: Wed Oct 22 08:05:10 2014 +0200 | | Use Europe/Berlin as timezone for Germany, skipping the Büsingen question. Then you asked me to file this bug, I did, nothing happened, so I thought I'd ping this bug… So I suggest you stop bitching about how “trivial” and “hillarious” this bug is will do. I just cannot promise to not laugh, sigh, cry or giggle a bit when I see it or am being pointed at. But I'll promise to not mention this bug online in Debian forums anymore. mit vorzuüglichster Hochachtung, in Ergebenheit, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
