As the referenced mail mentions, this is generally about source
packages. Not speaking for -boot here, but in general terms. Britney
will continue to propagate new binary packages when migrating new
versions to testing. The release team has historically asked for some
updates not to be released from NEW, but that was mostly to avoid
uncoordinated transitions.

Bug#849278: zapps USB somehow

2016-12-24 Thread 積丹尼 Dan Jacobson
Package: os-prober
Version: 1.71

With os-prober installed and then running update-grub and grub-install
all I know is after rebooting I couldn't use any USB stuff after Debian
started the main boot choice.

As I depend on a USB keyboard, the only way to regain control of my
computer again was to hit the power button, and upon reboot quickly pick
recovery mode from the grub menu.

If I just instead sit there my computer starts X windows and the only
way out is the power button.

No I don't know why but it must have to do with those eerie kernel
messages you see,

grub-syslog.txt.gz
Description: log

Anyway I have now "aptitude purge"d os-prober and ran update-grub and
grub-install and now my computer is working again!

Yes there are a few less boot menu choices but it is worth it.

Did new tasksel break Debian Edu? (Was: Accepted tasksel 3.39 (source) into unstable)

2016-12-24 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

I just noticed this upload, which I suspect broken the package/profile
installation in Debian Edu, which depend on tasksel to install packages
listed in tasks outside tasksel-data.

I do not have time today to look into it, just wanted to make you all
aware of it.

Um, Jan 5th (i.e. upload by tomorrow-ish) is about uploads that are
NEW or about re-entry. Neither applies for laptop-detect, so deadline
is *Feb* 5th minus ten days for migration. Or I misread the message
horribly.

Now that laptop-detect has been orphaned I intend to do a QA upload in
about a week (aiming for stretch). So I found this old issue, it seems
sound, but I'm not sure whether it's is on the agenda, especially
since the related but #487404 was closed in the meantime.

Additionally, since Frans Pop stated in <200806281743.44118.elen...@planet.nl>:

| Also, adding a udeb is not up to Otavio as laptop-detect maintainer. Any
| new udeb needs to be approved by the D-I team and thus discussed on the

... a few mails were sent to debian-boot@ as well but AFAICS without a
reaction. So any ACK/NACK from their side is appriciated as well.

Analyzing the 'various bugfixes and fixed vulnerabilities' in Sid kernel

I realized I had to do a Jessie-backports for Reiser4 (SFRN) 4.0.1 AND test
neboot
installation in massive KVM Cloud instance of 12-cores / 48 Gig RAM.

"We also encourage installation reports to be sent even if the installation is

Smooth installation of Reiser4-enabled kernel 4.8.15-1 & reiser4progs
built/fetched for Jessie
netboot installer.

Only conflict is with nfs-commmon -- which hangs the newly installed Reiser4
Linux OS upon boot.
Accordingly this particular Debian netboot installer will purge nfs-common at
end of installation
so that GNU/Linux Debian Jessie OS boots without issues from its initial ext2
boot ~150MB partition
into Reiser4 root file system.

Dear Maintainer,

the name of the desktop environment developed by the KDE community is
Plasma, and it should be used when the manual talks about the desktop.
The attached patch (against current trunk, revision 70415) fixes this.

It is possible to run a graphical desktop environment on older or
low-end systems, but in that case it is recommended to install
a window manager that is less resource-hungry than those of the
