The reason is that on Arch Linux /bin is not in the path. And chroot inherits this path. When calling chroot the variable PATH should be set explicitly and not be inherited. A good idea would be to use chroot -i to clear all environment variables and to set explicitly those that are needed like PATH. And, on fedora, root's default path does not contain /bin: [root@alien /]# echo $PATH /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin So, chroot tries each of those directories, does not find mount in them in the debian chroot, and fails. Suggested fix: Before chrooting into the debootstrapped chroot to run commands, debootstrap should ensure that the PATH includes all directories it does on a standard debian system. But the code to bootstrap the distribution is exactly the same and I would like it to be shared with Debian (so that we get fixes and improvements too). I don't think there's a way to achieve this right now. It might be possible to just move the code out in some separate files that can be sourced from all the "script" files? Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 718632: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=718632 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: debootstrap Version: 1.0.64 Severity: normal W: Failure trying to run: chroot /debian mount -t proc proc /proc This is because mount is in a different location in fedora than in debian. On Debian, it's in /bin/mount, while on fedora, /usr/bin/mount. Eg: PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin This way, the host system's chroot etc will still be found whereever it's PATH has them, and the debian system's commands will likewise be found. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: debootstrap Source-Version: 1.0.93+nmu3 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of debootstrap, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.
