The changelog we send to d-d-a is probably not really > suitable for d-n, but a shorter version with a bit more explanation and a > link to [1] could work. note that in my "master plan" i would like to see such snapshots somewhat stabilized (as in "not too badly broken, usable", not as in "debian full blown release") and announced them publicly. the reasoning behind this is that a certain group of people seem to like to update and reinstall as often as they can to get the feeling of maximum up-to-date-ness. And debian (as it has testing, anyway) can satisfy their demand easier, as in passing. I envision drop-in artwork packages that gives those snapshots a new look even, featuring a consistant suite of themes between stable releases. bottomline: make those snapshots vaguely predictable, ask the release team to prevent testing to be too badly broken, drop in a new look and feel and announce it much better, more visible. /andreas -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Simply extract this tarball into the tftpd >boot image directory. netbooting d-i on i386
i read this http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/manual/en.i386/ch04s06.html and looked at the files here: http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-i386/current//images/netboot/ and it is not clear to me how the given files are supposed to fit into the given description/process. what is the kernel image to boot? (vmlinuz, i assueme?) and what is the image to pass along? the mini.iso? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(refund-)books closed on d-i development meeting in oldenburg
we now closed the books on the d-i development meeting in oldenburg. money transactions were done last week, (with two exceptions), and except petter, who`s bills i let collect some additional dust, everyone who sent in their bills should receive their money shortly or have it allready. those who did not send in their receipts by now dont need to bother. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". travel to oldenburg, and the event itself
this is an attempt to supply some more information about the oldenburg linux developers meeting and the d-i event. i did not talk to joey, he is busy. but i talked to people who were there allready and most of the following info is from them. it is not the most reliabel, though. handle with care! the events starts on friday, but one can show up and use the rooms allready on thurday evening. it usually ends on sunday noon/afternoon. (plan to leave the uni around 13.00?) untill now there were two seminar rooms at the oldenburger uni, one for hacking one for sleeping. you should bring your own box/notebook. there are computer pools nearby, but it is doubtfull that you get a login or even permisson to test d-i on one of those boxes. breakfast will be provided, for lunch there is the cafeteria of the uni (which is one of the three best in germany!), which is open at least on friday, most likely on saturday. if you come by plane, there are three airports that you might want to use: hamburg, bremen, and from the UK with ryanair: groningen. transportation from groningen takes three hours, which is longer then 1.5h from hamburg, even if it is only a fraction of the distance. joey did pick up people at bremen airport in the past, and it can be expected that he does so this year, too. of cause it makes sense to coordinate travels so that he can pick up several people at once. you could make arrangements to arrive at bremen international airport around 16.00, perhaps. an other option is to use the train from bremen or hamburg to oldenburg. but there you should probably try to be picked up by joey (or someone else, there is an active lug there) websites to use for train tavel is www.bahn.de. you can book tickets there, if you want and make reservations. Oldenburg is a beautifull town, and i recommend the cafeteria. there are lovly pubs and restaurants where you can eat and drink close by (from the uni). the whole event was not geared towards international attendance up untill now (which explains the sparse website). but those who were there describe it as "really relaxed and cool, not so organized". please contact me if you need more info, i try to collect the questions and answers. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". yesterdays boot floppies work perfectly
Yesterday afternoon I updated my cvs tree and compiled a set of bootfloppies for a new notebook I installed today. It is a Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook s series s-4546. I installed testing, and expected trouble. but everything worked smoothly; not only the the download but also the installation and configuration. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". actual status and action items?
the other day I had a conversation with joey on irc regarding the status, but also the aims of b-f. From what he said, the mail target was to get b-f out of the door as quickly as possible. for me that did not correspond with lots of items on the todo list, which partly do beauty-care and partly add features (partitioning, reiserfs). either way, could the todo list be streamlined and ajusted to reality? Right now I have problems finding a point where I can really dig in. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
lilo gets downloaded but not installed
After downloading all the packages (and seemingly installing most of them) lilo's executable is not installed. The package is downloaded and resides in the right dir. so it is not possibel to create a bootable system. when I tried to install lilo (using /target/usr/bin/dpkg -i /target/ --root=target dpkg complained, that the status area was empty. and in fact the staus file of debian is size 0. (as well as all other dpkg files and dirs). so extracting fails somehow for some packages, and information gets lost for all. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". design problem when installing base system
Right now, packages are downloaded from the web, stored in /var/cache/apt/archives/...deb and later simply unpacked. this causes a problem, if someone wants to install potato, after a testing installtion failed/was not finished: Both flavours of all packages are in given directory and are unpacked; due to higher verson numbers and sort on unpack, allways the newer package gets installed. the user who has two sets of packages will allways end up with the newer one. we need to - remember what he wanted to install and have a list which packages belong to his choice *OR* - erase the archive/ directory on every installation start -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". grmpf!
I am annoyed: Whatever I fix in bootfloppies if fixed allready when I want to check it in. I basicly spend a hole evening + half a night on 'getting to know the system' whithout any practical value. Efficiency could improve. What I do not find is the filelist or command that generates the 'required' list of files for download from the ftp/http servers during basesystem install. Lilo is missing there and I can not find the list where it needs to be added to be downloaded, too. A lilo config is generated and is in place. I am not on this list. But I guess I will read the archive someday before I spend time on this again. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
