Crosswalk - Every Day Light: At-One-Ment , December 18, 2004
AD| Do You Have the New Holman CSB? http://l.salemweb.net/holman0804m/devo/ E V E R Y D A Y L I G H T Daily readings to help you see Jesus' light in your life by Selwyn Hughes At-One-Ment God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. (v. 25) -- For reading meditation: Romans 3:21-31 Herbert Spencer, whom we quoted earlier, wrote: The task of religion is at-one-ment: atonement. If it fails to do this it fails at the vital point. Its ritual may be beautiful, its sanctions may be ancient, its precepts may be good, but if it fails to bring men and women into correspondence with God it fails vitally and irretrievably. All else is useless, for if the problem of evil is ignored or passed over, we are like the person who dreams about and plans next year's happiness while an incurable disease is eating at his vitals. The wonderful distinctive of Christianity is this - Jesus Christ has done something about the problem of being out of correspondence with God. He puts the hand of a penitent sinner into the hand of a pardoning God. Because of the nature of the problem - the problem of evil - no other solution is possible. Salvation is a task which only God could engineer. As one theologian puts it: It is a task worthy of God. The ancient Greek playwrights used to warn their students that when writing a tragedy they should not bring a god onto the stage unless there was an entanglement worthy of a god. The presence of evil in this world, I suggest, presents an entanglement worthy of God. But it is no mere stage affair. It is a tragic fact. To deliver men and women from evil was a problem that challenged God's power and made the deepest claim upon His love. The cross is the answer. If we don't take God's way of salvation, then nothing else will do. PRAYER: Father, I rejoice that You have brought me to Your way -t he only way. Help the millions who strive to earn their salvation see that the penalty for sin has been fully paid. And all they have to do is humbly receive. In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen. Crosswalk - Spurgeon's Morning Evening Devotions, September 22, 2003
Crossguide.com - Christian Search and Directory http://www.crossguide.com Spurgeon's Morning Evening Devotions Morning, September 22 I will rejoice over them to do them good. - Jeremiah 32:41 How heart-cheering to the believer is the delight which God has in his saints! We cannot see any reason in ourselves why the Lord should take pleasure in us; we cannot take delight in ourselves, for we often have to groan, being burdened; conscious of our sinfulness, and deploring our unfaithfulness; and we fear that God's people cannot take much delight in us, for they must perceive so much of our imperfections and our follies, that they may rather lament our infirmities than admire our graces. But we love to dwell upon this transcendent truth, this glorious mystery: that as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so does the Lord rejoice over us. We do not read anywhere that God delighteth in the cloud-capped mountains, or the sparkling stars, but we do read that he delighteth in the habitable parts of the earth, and that his delights are with the sons of men. We do not find it written that even angels give his soul delight; nor doth he say, concerning cherubim and seraphim, Thou shalt be called Hephzibah, for the Lord delighteth in thee; but he does say all that to poor fallen creatures like ourselves, debased and depraved by sin, but saved, exalted, and glorified by his grace. In what strong language he expresses his delight in his people! Who could have conceived of the eternal One as bursting forth into a song? Yet it is written, He will rejoice over thee with joy, he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. As he looked upon the world he had made, he said, It is very good; but when he beheld those who are the purchase of Jesus' blood, his own chosen ones, it seemed as if the great heart of the Infinite could restrain itself no longer, but overflowed in divine exclamations of joy. Should not we utter our grateful response to such a marvellous declaration of his love, and sing, I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation? Evening, September 22 Gather not my soul with sinners. - Psalm 26:9 Fear made David pray thus, for something whispered, Perhaps, after all, thou mayst be gathered with the wicked. That fear, although marred by unbelief, springs, in the main, from holy anxiety, arising from the recollection of past sin. Even the pardoned man will enquire, What if at the end my sins should be remembered, and I should be left out of the catalogue of the saved? He recollects his present unfruitfulness-so little grace, so little love, so little holiness, and looking forward to the future, he considers his weakness and the many temptations which beset him, and he fears that he may fall, and become a prey to the enemy. A sense of sin and present evil, and his prevailing corruptions, compel him to pray, in fear and trembling, Gather not my soul with sinners. Reader, if you have prayed this prayer, and if your character be rightly described in the Psalm from which it is taken, you need not be afraid that you shall be gathered with sinners. Have you the two virtues which David had-the outward walking in integrity, and the inward trusting in the Lord? Are you resting upon Christ's sacrifice, and can you compass the altar of God with humble hope? If so, rest assured, with the wicked you never shall be gathered, for that calamity is impossible. The gathering at the judgment is like to like. Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. If, then, thou art like God's people, thou shalt be with God's people. You cannot be gathered with the wicked, for you are too dearly bought. Redeemed by the blood of Christ, you are his for ever, and where he is, there must his people be. You are loved too much to be cast away with reprobates. Shall one dear to Christ perish? Impossible! Hell cannot hold thee! Heaven claims thee! Crosswalk - WOW The Big Picture: Healing Spiritual Blindness, September 22, 2003
Crossguide.com - Christian Search and Directory http://www.crossguide.com W O W - T H E B I G P I C T U R E by Thomas Nelson Publishers Healing Spiritual Blindness -- John 9; Psalm 106:35-38; Proverbs 19:1 Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When He had said these things, He spat on the ground and made clay with the saliva; and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And He said to him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam (which is translated, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing. Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, Is not this he who sat and begged? Some said, This is he. Others said, He is like him. He said, I am he. Therefore they said to him, How were your eyes opened? He answered and said, A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight. Then they said to him, Where is He? He said, I do not know. They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see. Therefore some of the Pharisees said, This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How can a man who is a sinner do such signs? And there was a division among them. They said to the blind man again, What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes? He said, He is a prophet. But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see? His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself. His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. Therefore his parents said, He is of age; ask him. So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, Give God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner. He answered and said, Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see. Then they said to him again, What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes? He answered them, I told you already, and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become His disciples? Then they reviled him and said, You are His disciple, but we are Moses' disciples. We know that God spoke to Moses; as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from. The man answered and said to them, Why, this is a marvelous thing, that you do not know where He is from; yet He has opened my eyes! Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him. Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing. They answered and said to him, You were completely born in sins, and are you teaching us? And they cast him out. Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said to him, Do you believe in the Son of God? He answered and said, Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him? And Jesus said to him, You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you. Then he said, Lord, I believe! And he worshiped Him. And Jesus said, For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may be made blind. Then some of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these words, and said to Him, Are we blind also? Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, 'We see.' Therefore your sin remains. John 9 WORSHIP: But they mingled with the Gentiles And learned their works; They served their idols, Which became a snare to them. They even sacrificed their sons And their daughters to demons, And shed innocent blood, The blood of their sons and daughters, Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; And the land was

Without him, you might not find anything to connect Roy's rock to rock 'n' roll, bikinis to the breastplate of St. Patrick. But log on to his Web log at www.thunderstruck.org and you'll find links to those topics and dozens more. Together, they serve as Beard's so-called truckstop for the soul. Web logs, best known as blogs, are online journals dedicated to particular subjects that often offer legions of links to relevant news or other Web sites. While it's unclear just how many blogs are out there, it's evident that spirituality -- and the intersection of faith and culture in particular -- saturates many of them. Beard said he started his blog five years ago, when he wanted a place to post some articles he had written, along with others that were of interest to him. * * * * * * * * * * * * ADVERTISEMENT * * * * * * * * * * * Do you want to help the victims of Hurricane Isabel? There's as much stuff on there about surfing and punk rock as there is about theology, explained Beard, one of the authors of Spiritual Journeys: How Faith Has Influenced Twelve Music Icons. For me, faith includes all areas of life. Beard, the 38-year-old vice president of Good News -- a network of conservative United Methodist evangelicals in Wilmore, Ky., -- said he spends between 3 and 4 hours every day maintaining his Web log. It was first just a hobby ... just a way for me to express myself, said Beard, who also edits Good News magazine. I live in a very small, conservative town and I'm from southern California. ... The two worlds are very, very different. It ends up being a better way for me to maintain my sanity here. Now, he said, I'm addicted to it ... and feel this weird responsibility. It's a blast for me, and I'm stoked when other people like it. While many may appreciate the diverse nature of Beard's blog, surfers seeking religion seem to gravitate toward like-minded believers. Richard Flory, a sociologist at Biola University in La Mirada, Calif., said surfers are adept at using the Internet to create and solidify networks they already have. Through the blogs, Christians have formed international communities, Flory said, noting that it seems like they all know of each other. But Flory doesn't think the congregation of these virtual networks means the end for traditional religious communities. I don't think it's one replacing the other, Flory said. People are never going to want to lose the human contact. Kathy Shaidle, the Toronto-based founder of the blog www.relapsedcatholic.com, said the Internet will never supplant the sacramental nature of Catholicism. What it's done, she said, is help many to discuss difficult issues and clarify their thoughts. It can't replace it, but it's a wonderful adjunct, she said. Shaidle, who started her blog in July 2000, said she noticed a proliferation of sites when the sexual abuse scandal within the Catholic Church began garnering national attention. Today, the number of sites seems to have leveled off, she said. I think it really was a wonderful way for people to let off steam, she said. It was probably a very healthy thing. Many seem to sense a certain security online and may feel comfortable engaging in conversations they might shy away from in person. Brenda E. Brasher, author of Give Me That Online Religion and a sociology professor at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, said she believes one reason individuals feel comfortable turning to the Internet for answers about their religious questions is due to the feeling of privacy many people associate with computer communications -- even though it is not especially a private way to communicate. Through their online dialogues, Shaidle said, many Catholics had the opportunity to debate

Chances are good that even you have fallen into the debt trap at least once in your life, or perhaps you or a loved one is struggling to get out right now. Take comfort. There is a way of getting - and staying - out. Don't overestimate the importance of wealth. Learn discipline - the ability to postpone pleasure. You get into financial and spiritual difficulty when you cannot postpone pleasure until the proper time. The desire for instant gratification leads to impulse-buying - the easiest path to the debt trap. Interestingly, men are worse than women about spending money they don't have. Don't spend money on sin. Think of the millions of dollars that are wasted on alcohol consumption and drug use each year, as well as pornography and gambling. What seems like a trivial pursuit can lead to addiction and the devastation of lives. If you have that pattern in your life, admit your problem and seek help. Don't overspend. Live within your means. Don't get drawn into the credit card trap of spending more than you intend, or paying off less than the full amount. Simplify your life so that you can live comfortably within your means. Accept responsibility. When you find yourself headed for the debt trap, don't look to quick fixes (lotteries or get-rich-quick schemes) or others to bail you out. Learn to be disciplined and willing to do the difficult things necessary to break your habits and get out of the trap you're in. Develop a plan. You can't go on living the same way and expect results other than what you have. Write down a better plan for living. Submit to the Father's will. Listen to what God is saying to you: in scripture, in sermons, in the comments of friends. Humble yourself before the Father and ask for forgiveness and guidance. Start immediately. Once you have resolved to fix the problem and devised a plan, don't wait to put it into action. Although it may take a long time to recover fully, you will feel better knowing you are beginning to get things under control. Credit Cards and College Students Crown Financial Ministries QUESTION: I'll be going to college in the fall, and I've already heard about the credit card marketing that takes place on some campuses. I'd like to have my own credit card, but I don't want to repeat the mistakes made by my friends who are already in college. Do you have any advice? ANSWER: In his book, The Complete Financial Guide for Young Couples, Larry Burkett says he believes every credit card should come with this warning: Danger! Use of this card can be injurious to your marriage. In your case, the warning might tell you that misuse of credit cards could severely hinder your efforts to fulfill your educational and career goals. * * * * * * * * * * * * ADVERTISEMENT * * * * * * * * * * * Dont spend a dime on books, seminars, classes other expensive no-name lessons until youve tried one of my amazing computer training lessons FREE! - John W. As a result, it also gives you the potential for a lot of consumer debt, which is the last thing you need at this point in your life. After you begin college, you may be approached on campus by marketers from credit card companies. A number of colleges have banned these marketers, who may use high-pressure tactics to sign you up or try to entice you with free gifts. Some students who sign up are unable to control their use of credit cards and wind up with thousands of dollars of debt. To counter this problem, some credit card issuers are offering secured cards to students. These cards have $300 limits, and before using them students must have a certain amount of money in the bank. On the opposite end of the spectrum are marketers who deceive students into signing up for more than one credit card. How? These students simply sign every piece of paper they're asked to sign without reading the fine print. Remember that you always have the option of obtaining a credit card this summer at a local bank. But if you decide to obtain a card on campus, make sure you sign up for only one card. In addition, set some rules for using your credit card and stick to them. here are some suggestions. 1) Obtain a card with restrictions and a low spending limit. 2) Get on a budget and use your card only for budgeted items. In other words, if it's not in your budget for the month, don't buy it on credit. 3) Pay your credit card bill off every month. 4) The first month that you find you cannot pay off your credit card bill, destroy your card. You can always get another one later. In today's edition: 200 Police Halt Church Construction in Vietnam 83-Year-Old Ten Commandments Plaque Can Stay Police Use Lure of Registration to Arrest Chinese Church Leaders Pope Warns Against 'Loss of Europe's Christian Heritage' 200 Police Halt Church Construction In Vietnam Compass Direct For the second time in three years, authorities in Thu Thiem district of Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) halted the construction of a church building. This time, however, they did not destroy the initial construction, as Christians involved showed increased sophistication in their organizational skills. At 4 a.m. on June 9, Christian believers transported building materials to the construction site and, while one group gathered to pray, another constructed the temporary building's frame. At 7 a.m., an estimated 200 police arrived on the scene, but left after realizing they could not legally stop the building project. Police then sent a gang of troublemakers to the site, but efforts to provoke the praying Christians failed. The incident ended when authorities seized and hauled away all the building materials. Two weeks later, Catholic priests Peter Nguyen Huu Giai and Peter Phan Van Loi published an unprecedented Letter of Solidarity with the Protestant Church in Vietnam in which they expressed strong support for Christians involved in the Thu Thiem building project, as well persecuted Montagnard believers in the central highlands. * * * * * * * * * * * * ADVERTISEMENT * * * * * * * * * * * Bible Discovery Center is a unique Bible study program that teaches you a new process of studying God's Word. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that a reasonable person acquainted with the plaque's history would consider a ruling to leave it there as religiously neutral, not evangelical. The plaque has been attached to the Chester County Courthouse in since 1920. We cannot ignore the inherently religious message of the Ten Commandments, wrote Judge Edward R. Becker. However, we do not believe that there can never be a secular purpose for posting the Ten Commandments, or that the Ten Commandments are so overwhelmingly religious in nature that they will always be seen only as an endorsement of religion. Margaret Downey, a member of the Freethought Society of Greater Philadelphia, an atheist group that considers the plaque to be a violation of church-state separation, said she might appeal the case to the Supreme Court. Chester County Commissioner Andrew Dinniman, who is Jewish, disagreed, saying the commandments may be inspired by religion but have a place in the history of secular law, too. Police Use Lure Of Registration To Arrest Chinese Church Leaders Voice of the Martyrs Church leaders in Yunnan Province, China, were thrilled when police said they could get government registration for their church group. The group had sought registration, which would give legal sanction to their church meetings, since the Chinese government changed the church registration law in 1994. They were told to bring their leaders to a meeting to sign the needed documents, but when 12 leaders arrived, officers of the Public Security Bureau (PSB), the Court Marshall's office and the prosecutor's office awaited them. The 12 were arrested without warrants or required documentation. Police say these are law-breakers, said a spokesman. But this clearly shows that these are patriotic citizens trying to follow their country's laws if they can do so in good conscience. Eight of the leaders were sentenced to three years of laogai, so-called re-education through labor. This sentence can be given in China without filing formal charges or a formal trial. The other four leaders were indicted and held for trial, which likely means they will face sentences longer than three years. During a 1997 anti-cult campaign, eight of the group's leaders were sent to a labor camp. Some were put on public display, where police encouraged passers-by to spit
