Bug#506252: success: d-i lenny rc1 on nslu2 armel
On Tue, Jan 06, 2009 at 05:03:54PM +0100, Martin Michlmayr wrote: Devin, I'm inclined to close this bug report since I believe that d-i is doing the right thing. There are reports that the clock sometimes gets stuck on the NSLU2, but I don't think Debian/debian-installer can do anything about this. As I say, d-i's detecting the hang properly and doing almost the right thing; my only suggestion would be to turn off HWCLOCKACCESS when a hang is detected to prevent future hangs on boot. Fixing hwclock would be a better workaround, so I'm fine if you want to close this one or downgrade/reassign. The most plausible root cause for the issue I've heard is that the clock needs software intervention to start, which the vendor firmware does but our own kernels don't. Clean install otherwise. Nice job on all that. -- Devin \ aqua(at)devin.com, IRC:Requiem; http://www.devin.com Carraway \ 1024D/E9ABFCD2: 13E7 199E DD1E 65F0 8905 2E43 5395 CA0D E9AB FCD2 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

On Thu, Nov 20, 2008 at 08:40:59AM -0200, Otavio Salvador wrote: Could you give a try in current daily installer since it has a new kernel version and see if RTC looks OK? If it doesn't it looks like a kernel issue to me. Devin, don't waste your time - nothing has changed in the kernel in this area. This should be reassigned to kernel then? Or you believe it is our fault somewhere? From what I've seen on this issue elsewhere, the installer's already doing pretty much the right thing by detecting hwclock hangs. The only other thing it might do would be to set HWCLOCKACCESS=no in /etc/default/rcS or to disable /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh after detecting such a hang. Or util-linux could stop waiting forever for a stopped RTC to move -- Bug#494817 has a patch for that. -- Devin \ aqua(at)devin.com, IRC:Requiem; http://www.devin.com Carraway \ 1024D/E9ABFCD2: 13E7 199E DD1E 65F0 8905 2E43 5395 CA0D E9AB FCD2 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Installed files were timestamped correctly, but on post-install reboot the clock was wrong (also if the clock isn't running the hwclock access on boot will stall, taking hours for the first boot, but I'd disabled that before the reboot.) I let tasksel proceed with the default Standard system task, which was a mistake -- it took over an hour to install those packages, most of which I then had to remove manually. -- Please make sure that the hardware-summary log file, and any other installation logs that you think would be useful are attached to this report. The worst problem was a hang on the reboot. Only small quibbles otherwise. Booted off CD made from sarge cdrom images, via OF. Made some mistakes laying out the CD fs (put yaboot and friends in a subdir and blessed that, but the resulting CD couldn't be booted; had to tell OF what bootloader to use. I suggest the PPC installation manual mention how to use the OF 'dir' command, since it's not that self-explanatory. No significant issues at all on initial pass through the installer. DHCPed, pulled base over http with Squid proxy. Found the partition tool somewhat confusing -- there wasn't an option for I've already done the partitioning, and I was leery of writing a partition table I hadn't edited. Worked out okay, though. On first boot of base system, had a soft-hang at module load time right after Detecting hardware: was displayed. Sleep light (used as HDD activity light in that kernel) was steady-on. Capslock worked, but no tty response. Rebooted, system came up just fine with a device or resource busy complaint from the parport_pc module (not even germane to this arch, I thought.) CDROM was detected, but it was the yaboot CD I've made, so the installer declined it. I suggest the this is not a Debian CD be revised to something a bit more specific like this is not a Debian Installation CD. Was confused by GECOS configuration for root, which didn't mention that the name being solicited was for root, not the initial user; I entered my own name since I thought I was being prompted for the initial user GECOS in advance. Didn't install popularity-contest because it's a laptop and sporadically connected. dpkg installed it anyway
Bug#241009: installation-reports: success with minor issues, 1ghz tibook
Slight clarification, since the reportbug data might be misleading otherwise. I went through the whole install for sarge, and the report is against that. I then took the machine up to sid before filing the report. (I did ask for unstable the first time around without thinking; base went in just fine, but on the reboot, fsck objected to missing dump-order fields in fstab and / came up readonly, which broke the install with an init-looped failure. Oh well.) -- Devin \ aqua(at)devin.com, 1024D/E9ABFCD2; http://www.devin.com Carraway \ IRC: Requiem GCS/CC/L s-:--- !a !tv C$ ULB+++$ O+@ P L+++ signature.asc Description: Digital signature
Bug#145469: [woody] installer went into infinite loop after rebooted
This also occurs on powerpc (new-powerpc on ibook) using this afternoon's Woody bootfloppies. Scripts from /tmp/base-config.$$/ are failing in association with db_* calls. After disabling a couple by inserting exit 0 at the beginning, I switched 50tasksel to be run with bash -x, yielding this (transcribing from another machine, typos are probably mine): [ various evals as the db_*() methods are loaded ] + db_title 'Debian System Configuration' + echo 'TITLE Debian System Configuration' + local 'IFS= ' + local _LINE + read -r _LINE + RET=0 + return 0 + '[' -x /usr/bin/tasksel ']' + db_fset base-config/run-tasksel seen false + echo 'FSET base-config/run-tasksel' seen false + local 'IFS= ' + local _LINE + read -r _LINE + RET=base-config/run-tasksel doesn't exist + return 0 [ base-config loops back to the beginning ] Assuming that the base-config/run-tasksel is trying to invoke a script somewhere, I looked for base-config dirs on the filesystem. Ignoring one each in /usr/share/doc and /usr/share/lintian/overrides, there's a /usr/share/base-config and /usr/lib/base-config. /usr/lib/base-config contains copies of the scripts found in /tmp/base-config.$$/. /usr/share/base-config/ contains only a file Mirrors.masterlist. -- Devin \ aqua(at)devin.com, 1024D/E9ABFCD2; http://www.devin.com Carraway \ IRC: Requiem GCS/CC/L s-:--- !a !tv C$ ULB+++$ O+@ P L+++ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
