Bug#770829: installation-report: Font too small on UltraHD screen

2014-11-24 Thread Eugen Dedu

Package: installation-reports
Version: 2.57
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I am installing debian on a laptop with 3840x2160 resolution.

The first screen, allowing to choose Install, Graphical install etc. is
fine.

Afterwards, the following screens, in both text (newt) and graphical
install, font is too small, almost unreadable on the screen.

I put a video at http://eugen.dedu.free.fr/2014-11-24-130034.webm. It
is not of so good quality, since I have not had a camera with me, and
used the webcam, but allows to see the problem.

I attach three files about the system.

This is a somehow important problem, since nothing can be done to
workaround it. The installer is also the first program a new user sees
when installing linux.

Dear Maintainer,

I choose graphical install. On subsequent screens mouse is not working:
it is just shown in the middle of the screen, but cannot be moved.

I attach Xorg.0.log, hardware-summary and syslog files.

(Also, be aware that the first line Package: as completed by reportbug
contains reports with s, whereas the package name is without s.)

UltraHD installation: font too small

2014-11-21 Thread Eugen Dedu

Hi,

I am installing debian amd64 on a Lenovo Y50 with UltraHD 3840x2160
resolution. I use today's debian-testing...iso from
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd.

I am using the default newt. The text size is very small on such
screen, from the very beginning (language selection). Would it be
possible to detect the resolution and increase font size if needed?

UltraHD installation: partitioning step shows installation media too

2014-11-21 Thread Eugen Dedu

Hi,

I am installing debian amd64 on a Lenovo Y50 with UltraHD 3840x2160
resolution. I use today's debian-testing...iso from
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/amd64/iso-cd.

I chose for partitioning: guided – use entire disk. It shows there
choices: the disc, and the two partitions/discs of the USB stick. As I
am installing debian from the USB stick itself, I think it should not
show the USB stick as disc to install linux on (or at least show them in
grey).

Re: Re: UltraHD installation: mouse not working in graphical install

2014-11-21 Thread Eugen Dedu

I don't think we can do much about the font size issues;

except making the graphical install the default :) Ain't that the case?

I tested also with graphical install. The very first screen, presenting
Install, Graphical install etc. is shown graphically and at visually
good size. After choosing graphical install, the screen goes indeed
graphical, but the fonts are as small as the newt frontend, i.e. very
hard to read!!

This is a somehow important problem, since nothing can be done to
workaround it. The installer is also the first program a new user sees

Graphics glitches during installation and partman

2010-04-22 Thread Eugen Dedu
Hi,

Yesterday I installed a Dell Latitude E6500 computer with SSD and
1920x1200 resolution. I successfully installed gnome and it rebooted
well. But there were some graphics artifacts during installation, I
made photos of them, http://eugen.dedu.free.fr/di, see below.

- The boot screen does not display correctly the background image, see
first image (on the contrary, the blank line of the menu is ok, this is
the fault of photo camera).

- Choose Choose language, afterwards English, and come back: the
menu item at the bottom contains weird characters, see second image.
  - the same after choosing English and Paris, see third image (bottom
left and right)
  - the same for many other screens

- I do not know what to choose on the next screen: Select a keyboard
layout (PC-style or Do not configure keyboard). I have chosen expert,
but I think a brief sentence about what means PC-style (AT or PS-2
connector) is useful here. I choose Do not configure keyb and it worked

- During creating partition (partman), it went instantly to 50%,
afterwards nothing was printed for about 1 minute, afterwards 100% and
the next menu item. I thought it will not work, maybe it is better (if
possible) to make several graduations instead of 0, 50 and 100%

Re: [D-I] Localization status for Debian Installer

2010-04-19 Thread Eugen Dedu
The situation for D-I translations is currently the following. It is
not that brilliant, I have to say. And I limit details to level 1.

 In very short:
33 languages are in good shape.
*26 languages are in danger of being deactivated*

 More details

 The safe side
 -
 16 languages are complete:
ar bg cs de es fr ga it ja lt nb pt ru sk th vi

14 languages were complete before changes to sublevel 5 and only have
5 fuzzy strings to very seldomly used packages:
ast bn el eo et eu fi gu mr pl sl sq sv tr zh_TW

3 languages have a few strings to update in sublevels 1 to 3 but have
active translators who will probably easy cope with them:
 be nl zh_CN

 The unsafe side
 ---
12 languages had random updates since lenny but not on a regular
 basis.
These languages are at risk of being deactivated for Squeeze if they
are not complete for sublevels 1 and 2:
da gl ko pa ro he hi hu ka pt_BR ml tl

If no one steps in for ro language, please contact me 1-2 weeks before
the release, I will do it as much as I can.

No kernel modules found on today amd64

2007-10-07 Thread Eugen Dedu

Hi,

I have a MacBookPro, last version (June 2007). During installation from
CD debian-testing-amd64-businesscard.iso, vesion oct7-0905UTC (today
last version), md5sum d054222ff8db483c9f273015dda3d7b0:

1. I receive the following error:

Load installer components from CD:
No kernel modules were found. This probably is due to a mismatch...

However, if I press yes, I choose no other component, the installation
continue.

2. I have had deselected floppy during modules to load step, and now,
during network hardware detection, it prints that the floppy kernel
module was detected as matching my hardware, but I have no floppy in my
laptop! Maybe there is another module which needs it?

3. The installer afterwards prints Ethernet card not found on the
system, but I have an Ethernet card in my laptop... And the
installation stops by showing ... The failing step is: Detect network
hardware.

I can give more information very fast (today). I am very interested to
install debian on this machine :o)

Best regards,

Can you try with today's *netboot* image (not *netinst*)?

http://people.debian.org/~aba/d-i/images/daily/netboot/mini.iso

With the ISO from the link above, the network detection is ok.

However, it asks me about floppy module, but I have no floppy... I
unselect the floppy module, I say no to PCMCIA services, and the DCCP
(with Ethernet) works. I am doing the installation and keep you informed.

Sorry, what's the difference between netboot and netinst? Is there a
Web page explaining that? At
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/ netboot is absent... I
think it would be useful to explain at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/ in one sentence each of
the types of boot.

netboot is a very minimal image which leads you up to the network
settings, then downloads all remaining components from a network
mirror.

netinst is a CD image that allows installing a Debian *base* system
*without* the network. We all agree this is a kinda confusing name..:-)

And businesscard? Can this info be put on
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer? It takes only 2-3 lines,
but avoid all confusion (I imagine that many people put this
question)... I can write myself these sentences if you wish.

Now, pursuing the installation:

- In modules to load, live-installer (Install the base system) seems
bizarre. In fact, I AM installing the base system, so why proposing
this as module? I imagine live-installer means another thing, I propose
to explain better what is it.

- In modules to load, I have selected: eject-udeb, irda, cdrom-checker.
After configure the clock, it goes back to Detect and mount CD-ROM
instead of choosing the next item in the menu. Upon ENTER, it says that
The CD-ROM drive contains a CD which cannot be used for
installation... So I go myself after Configure the clock, i.e. to
Detect disks. After that, it goes back again to Detect and

mount CD-ROM and I manually change again to the item after Detect disks.

- The laptop has 2GB of memory, so it creates 4GB swap. This is a
kernel question, but is it really necessary to have 4GB of swap? 2GB of
memory is already sufficient to execute 2 linux systems in
parallel :o) My previous laptop had 512MB of RAM, and 512MB RAM + 1GB
swap it is still less than 2GB of memory of current laptop.

Bug#417749: installation-report: A few glitches when installing on Samsung M40 plus

If you carefully read the language/country selection, you did not
choose English/GB as language.

You did choose English as language and United Kingdom as location. So
you basically told the installer that you are located in UK. As a
consequence, the installer chooses the UK timezone which seems pretty
logical to me.

TO achieve what you want, you should have chosen Other on the
country selection screen, then proceed down the list to France, choose
it and then you would end up with the French timezone while the locale
would still be an English locale.

I'm afraid there's no bo bug or even glitch here. The country
selection screen clearly explains what are the consequences of
choosing a country.

You're right, sorry for this point.

Bug#417749: installation-report: A few glitches when installing on Samsung M40 plus

2007-04-04 Thread Eugen Dedu
Package: installation-report
Severity: normal

Hi,

I have installed debian (businesscard etch RC2) on a Samsung M40 plus
laptop. A few glitches I detected:

- detect network interfaces: I have a wired (with the cable plugged
into computer) and wi-fi with WEP network. The computer has noth a
wired and wireless interface. During detection, the installer shows
  eth0 as Ethernet ... and eth1 as Broadcom (4407 I think)
... (wi-fi). When I do DHCP on eth0 (wired), it receives no answer.
When I do DHCP on eth1 (wi-fi), the DHCP server responds. However,
because of the WEP is impossible that it has used wi-fi connection.
Conclusion: the two interfaces are interchanged (the Ethernet is in
  fact the wi-fi and viceversa).

- For any of the two interfaces it does not ask me about a WEP key.

- TimeZone: I have chosen English/GB as language (at beginning of the
installation) because I prefer to have English as language. So at
TimeZone the installer proposed me UK/London, but I cannot change it
to France/Paris. I propose to add a button such as Change proposed
  TZ.

- Upon installation of base system: at swsusp package I was asked The
swap is not active and suspend to ... is impossible. Continue
without it? What does yes and no buttons mean here? I choosed
No but the installation has continued!

- I chose to use sudo, and not to log in as root. Now, many
applications in GNOME-Administrator menu (changing Date/Hour too)
ask for root password. How can I start them from the menu if I do
  not know root password?

- There is no menu in GNOME to suspend to RAM. How can I suspend to
RAM (without executing echo mem /sys/power/state)? It is very
  useful for laptops!

Sorry to not be more precise, but I provide more information if
needed.

Thank you for your work!
Cheers,
Eugen Dedu

 - You say : Airport Extreme driver is reported to be broken in 2.6.16 (#358833)

This strikes me at odd, we have no had 2.6.16 kernels since age, and the
airport extreme (bcm43xx or something such) driver has been rumored to be
fixed in 2.6.18-3 or something such, and now working well. I have no such
hardware to confirm, but the return of the bug reporters seemed to indicate
   such.

In fact, the bug report quoted says (on june 2006) :

bcm43xx and softmac-snapshot got removed now. Please use 2.6.17 which
has a far newer and bugfixes version of both merged in anyway.

   So please drop this one.

You're right, AirportExtreme works with 2.6.17 and .18.

Comments/Problems:
(I have already installed debian linux 2.4 with d-i beta3 on this machine.)
I booted on the CD with 20040611 image. I tried the following boot options:
install-2.6, install-powerpc-2.6, expert-powerpc-2.6. All of them stops
at the same point during booting with the following message:
[...]
Freeing unused kernel memory: [...]
Setting up filesystem, please wait...
umount: /initrd: Invalid argument
cp: unable to link `/mnt/usr/share/discover/usb.lst': Operation not
permitted
cp: unable to link `/mnt/var/log/messages': Operation not permitted
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init'.
  0 Rebooting in 180 seconds..

I see on
http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/svn/debian-installer/installer/doc/TODO
that 2.6 support... sid_d-i works on powerpc, at least newworld.

Thank you,
Eugen

The computer is not connected to a network. It tried network card config,
and failed.
Now, the problems:

1. I have chosen Detecter et monter le cederom, but instead it entered in
network card config and tried DHCP, asked IP etc. After that, I have
chosen the next option.
You did not tell us exactly which image you tried. There are
businesscard and netinstall images for beta2 on cdrom. Both of these
images will not install a usable debian system without a network
connection. So it makes perfect sense to insist on network
configuration. If you only want the first part of the installation you
can configure a static network and the installation will continue
without further asking about network configuration.
As specified in the Method: line above, I tried the powerpc netinstall
CD image.

I tried again the installation without network, I put valid numbers (ip:
2.2.2.2, mask: 255.255.255.0, p 2.2.1, dns nothing, name debian, domain
toto.com) and it worked. Before, when the installation failed, I think
that I typed invalid entries for network (if I remember well) and passed
manually to the next menu choice (about CDROM detection). I did not
know that I *must* enter valid entries for network information, even if
I am not connected to a network. I did not know that I need a network
connection to install a usable debian system, sorry.

4. I have chosen Partitionnement. I have tape ctrl-c, and it exited and
printed the boot screen. Now the computer is blocked.
Where did you type ctrl-c? In the screen to select the disk to partition
or in mac-fdisk?
You can leave mac-fdisk by typing q
In mac-fdisk. Unfortunately, I do not remember *why* I typed ctrl-c,
since I might use q...

However, I tried again the installation and, instead of choosing the
normal exit with q, I typed ctrl-c. It shown again the boot screen
(Freeing unused kernel memory... Setting up filesystem..., and several
errors about modprobe after that) and it blocked. Shouldn't the signal
ctrl-c be caught?

Thank you,
Eugen

3. HW detection ok, but after that again it entered in network...

4. I have chosen Partitionnement. I have tape ctrl-c, and it exited and

I can provide further details if needed.

I have also tried an installation with network, more info in another
report.
