modify existing menu.lst instead of creating a new one

2007-03-28 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Hi all,

as far as I know the default behaviour of d-i when the user answers
yes to the question "Do you want to use GRUB as boot manager", is to
first search for other operating systems, generating the menu.lst file
accordingly, and then install is own instance of grub (possibly
overwriting an existing instance).

That was always fine for me, but recently I was asked by a couple of
users if it is possible to make the d-i detect if a GRUB instance
already exists, and possibly addan entry for the system being
installed to the relevant existing menu.lst, without generating its
own instance.

Would this be possible at the state of the art?

Ciao!

It simply tries to boot from the CD-ROM reader (I can see the led
flashing), but it fails and skip to the next device (hard disk), as
for example an audio CD disk with no boot sector was inserted.

  FP> Any messages at all?

No messages.

No.

As said, I don't even get to that point.

I'm not sure, replacing the SATA CD-ROM with a IDE one, makes d-i
happy and boot painlessly. I don't know exactly if there something to
set in the BIOS.. has somebody some experience here?

FP> Does a Sarge installation CD boot correctly (which release did you try)?

I did test it, but I'll check 3.1r4 out.

FP> Does an Etch RC1 installation CD boot correctly?

No, it fails as well, same behaviour.

daily builds with 2.6.18-3 fail to boot on SATA cdrom

2006-12-04 Thread Free Ekanayaka
both i386 and amd64 images of the latest daily builds will fail
booting (the BIOS try to boot from CDROM, but fails and skips it)
on this CDROM:
scsi1 : sata_via
Vendor: ATA Model: Maxtor 6V200E0Rev: VA11
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 05
  Vendor: TSSTcorp Model: CD/DVDW SH-W163A Rev: TS01
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 05
The funny thing is that if I boot from the hard disk a Debian etch
system (that I've installed with another cdrom device), and try to
mount a disk with this SATA cdrom, then it works perfectly. I'm using
kernel 2.6.18.
Any idea?

How to set yaird as initramfs generator

2006-02-16 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Hi,

how do I set yaird as default initramfs generator? I've looked to
base-installer.postinst and tried to preseed:

d-i base-installer/initramfs/generator select yaird

and to add yaird plus its dependences to .disk/base-include.

The yaird package is properly installed and the debconf value properly
set, but still base-installer wants to use initramfs. Debconf priority
is set to "high".

The pcmcia modules are not installed by default, because only laptops

It seems that cdrom-retriever does care about both main and local:

Release="$CDMNT/dists/$suite/Release"
[...]
components="`grep ^Components: $Release | cut -d' ' -f2-`"
ret=1
for comp in $components; do

and my debian-cd generated Release file is ok (both main and local are
listed).

The strange thing is that I know for sure that it was possible to load
home made udebs from the local component (that's what I did for
A/DeMuDi 1.2.0, but I do not need extra udebs anymore), and I believe
it's still possible to do it. I don't understand why this doesn't
apply to the base-installer udeb too..

Anyway the simplest thing is that #254996 gets fixed, is there any
chance to get it into Sarge? I can work on it, just tell what approach
should implement.

local base-installer is ignored

2004-11-10 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Hi,

inorder to workaround bug #254996 I've prepared a custom
base-installer with a slightly modified postinst script.

The custom version of package resides in the "local" component of the
repository on the CD-ROM, that means it's Package entry is in:

/cdrom/dists/sarge/local/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages

and the file is located in:

/cdrom/pool/local/b/base-installer/

while the official version of the package is not included in the
"main" sections, that means it's not listed in:

/cdrom/dists/sarge/main/debian-installer/binary-i386/Packages

nor present in:

/cdrom/pool/main/b/base-installer/

The /cdrom/.disk/base_components file includes both components:

main
local

However anna and the menu complain that base-installer is not present:

Nov 10 08:34:17 anna[3217]: DEBUG: resolver (base-installer): package doesn't
exist (ignored)

Nov 10 08:34:21 main-menu[347]: DEBUG: resolver (base-installer): package

change xdebconfigurator menu item number in base-config

2004-10-11 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Package: xdebconfigurator
Version: 1.10
Severity: normal

I think xdebconfigurator should be run *after* pkgsel. This way
xdebconfigurator triggers itself if the xserver-common package (which
contains dexconf) was installed, and does nothing otherwise.

Probably the right number would be 90, but it is currently used by
localization-config. Actually I think that also localization-config
should change its number, as the the keyboard layout should be
injected in the debconf database *before* running xdebconfigurator,
which runs dexconf.

force it to silently go on even in case of failure? I'd like the
process to be non-interactive..

xdebconfigurator menu item number in base-config

2004-10-11 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Hi,

currently xdebconfigurator base-config menu item has number 76, while
pkgselhas 80. Isthere any particular reason for running
xdebconfigurator *before* tasksel?

Running it running it *after* would make it trigger itself basing on
the user choice (with or without X).

Cheers,

Free

Just a note: maybe 99debian-tasks.desc is better..

That's fine for me, but if you change your mind of course it would be
handful for demudi. However nothing to kill nothing to die, if it's
not possible I'll temporary workaround it.

The patch works nicely :)

For example I can hide the Desktop task with a couple of lines, in a
separate file:

-- /usr/share/tasksel/00override.desc ---

Task: desktop
Test-standard: skip

The "standard" test is the one I posted in my other bug report.

Maybeit would be usefulto rename debian-tasks.desc in
10debian-tasks.desc, in order the to get a neater evaluation sequence.

Uhm, the way I see it there is no translation needed, as the procedure

As this feature would not affect the regular behaviour by any mean,

xdebconfigurator support in base-config

2004-10-07 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Hi,

what do you think about including xdebconfigurator support to the
finish item of base-config?

We can use the code from debian-br-cdd and skolelinux, and trigger it
with an hidden debconf question like:

db_get debian-installer/xdebconfigurator || true

if [ "$RET" = "true]; then
   ...
fi

so that it won't affect the current behaviour of base-config at all,
but at the sametime it would be available for who needs it
(e.g. CDDs).

This seems a good option to me. I'd not provide another Desktop or

Yes, I see your point.

So what do you suggest me to do if I want to keep all the automatic
language related tasks and get rid of Desktop, Mail server, etc?

Should I copy all the language related file to my custom task list and
divert debian-tasks.desc entirely?

Is there a way to get the Unix login name that the user chosen using

Automatic root password setting

2004-10-05 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Hi,

what about automatic root pw setting?

In Joey's preseed.cfg [0] I reed:

# To preseed the root password, you have to put it in the clear in this
# file. That is not a very good idea, use caution!
# (XXX: In fact, this won't work, because passwd clears the settings
# before asking for a root password. This may not be fixed before the sarge
# release, if it's fixed at all.)
#passwd passwd/root-passwordpassword r00tme
#passwd passwd/root-password-again password r00tme

has this been fixed?

Furthermore I'd like to be able to set it to the same password chosen
by the user for his personal account. This imply that the user account
must be set up *before* root password. Is this possible?

Bug#274936: tasksel: Split the debian-tasks.desc

2004-10-04 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Package: tasksel
Version: 2.12
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I propose to split the debian-tasks.desc file in several
parts:

 * lang-tasks.desc:for language related tasks which get
   automatically installed or excluded

 * server-tasks.desc: for server related tasks (Mail server,
   File server, etc.)

 * desktop-tasks.desc: for desktop related task (currently
   only Desktop)

This way it's simpler for CDDs to divert only part of the tasks
(typically server and/or desktop), while leaving untouched the others.

For example A/DeMuDi would let lang-tasks untouched, while it would
divert the server-tasks including a "Audio streaming server", and the
desktop-tasks too with "Recording studio", "Live performance", etc.

Hi,

I've tried to create a test task which is automatically marked for

Here's the definition of the task, included in debian-task.descs:

Task: test
Section: test

Description: Test
 Test task.
Key:
 joe
Test-prova: test
Packages: test

/usr/lib/tasksel/test simply exit 2
/usr/lib/tasksel/packages/test simply echo joe

If joe *is not* installed the Test task is displayed in the list, but
*not* marked.

On the opposite if joe *is* installed the task is displayed *and*
marked.

Using kbd-chooser

2004-06-30 Thread Free Ekanayaka

Hi all,

I'd like to use the kbd-chooser package for the custom installer I'm
preparing for A/DeMuDi.

I had a look to the source but I can't figure out how to use it
exactly. Should I simply list it in the udeb_include file?

Moreover it seems to me that the kbd-chooser configures only the

Thanks a lot for your fast reply.

I temporary worked around the problem, by introducing my own
kernel-image-2.4-XXX packages, but I'd like to try the experimental
branch too.

How much experimental is it? Is it safe to grab it and replace the
version which comes with the beta4 d-i?

Package: base-installer

It seems that the postinst code currently chooses the right
arch for a kernel only if the kernel packages are named like:

kernel-image-(2.4|2.6)-(386|586tsc|686|k6|..)

For custom made CDs with a possible local pool, holding custom
kernels, it would be nice that the script recognises also names
like:

kernel-image-(2.4|2.6)-myflavour-(386|586tsc|686|k6|..)

Yes true, and that's fine for me.

I'm closing the bug.

Bug#254312: base-config: add a suffix to the file names of the menu items

2004-06-14 Thread Free Ekanayaka
Package: base-config
Version: 2.21
Severity: wishlist

It would be useful to add a special suffix to the executable
files in /usr/lib/base-config/menu which will be considered
as menu entries.

For example we could have:

mta.cfg mta.mnu mta.tst

and then change the code in prep-menu accordingly:

find menu \( -type f -or -type l \) -perm -700 -printf '%f\n' | grep .cfg

This way it would be easier for other packages to customise base-config. For
example a package could provide a custom mta.cfg diverting the original file
to mta.cfg.distrib, and prep-menu will not include the .distrib file in the
menu.

Custom grub titles

2004-06-13 Thread Free Ekanayaka

Hi,

which is the cleaner way to change the title of the grub menu entry
generated by the first stage installation, just before the rebboot?

For example I'd like to turn "Debian GNU/Linux" in "aGNUla/DeMuDi"..

Yes I've read it and I'm currently use that approach. But this
solutions sounds me a little bit hackish, and I'd like something
specifically designed for this porpoise.

Anyhow thanks a lot for you document and scripts, which I found quite

I'm almost done in preparing a customised d-i for the aGNUla/DeMuDi
CDD, and I have to say that this new d-i is sooo beautiful and easy to
tweak.

I'm basing on the beta4 release, and I decided not to use debian-cd for the moment.

I simply replaced the pool/ and dist/ trees, which include:

1) all the packages needed by debootstrap
2) all the main/debian-installer section
3) an home made udeb which installs a package which customise
   the base-config menu
4) the optional packages used by DeMuDi

Everything is running fine..

I still do not understand which is the proper way to autoconfigure
XFree86, by now I'm using xdebconfigurator and dexconf.

Moreover it would be nice to have a tool which builds a minimum Debian
mirror with just the packages needed by debootstrap and the most
important udebs. I think that this way we could use debian-cd with a
bottom-up approach, without downloading a whole debian mirror.

ciao,

Do I really need a full Debian mirror to use debian-cd?

2004-05-21 Thread Free Ekanayaka

Hi,

I'm going on experimenting with debian-cd.

I'm wandering if I do really need a full debian mirror in order to
build the ISO. I guess that the only relevant part are the packages
belonging to the base system and the debian-installer section. Isn't
it?

Ideally I'd like to build the ISO out of a partial debian mirror
generated using apt-move plus the main/debian-installer tree.

Has anybody tried something like this?

bye,

free

Including additional packages on the Debian base CD

2004-05-20 Thread Free Ekanayaka

Hi all,

I had a look to the beta4 installer, which works really well :)

I'd like to use it for the next release of aGNUla/DeMuDi [0], which is
a Custom Debian Distribution devoted to audio work.

I've seen that the ISO image contains an ordinary pool/dists debian
APT repository to hold packages, so I guess that simply replacing it
with a custom archive would make the trick.. isn't it?

Furthermore it would be nice to have a way to tell to the installation
system to automatically install a certain set of packages after it
finishes to install the base system.

AFAIK Skolelinux folks already went through this way, and my task
would be very similar.

Thanks,

Free Ekanayaka
