You need to boot these machines with 'pci=noacpi' in the kernel

Detect hard drives: [O]
Partition hard drives: [O]

Comments/Problems:

I only have very minor comments:

(o) I hope the auto-partitioning logic varies between platforms
because 10Mb is far too small for /boot on hppa[1] at least and
possibly others?

(o) yaboot asked me what partition to use. It'd be nice if it could
have been told that by the auto-partitioning stuff?

(o) Wah, someone reversed order of username/user question in
base-config.

(o) Ho hum. Automatically trying to connect to security.d.o is kind
of evil. It wouldn't work in my environment, so I'd had to either
Control-c it (fairly unfriendly to the new user) or get bored
waiting for it to timeout (also not great). On the other hand, I
can see why it's desirable and stuff, and maybe overall it's a
good idea. Who knows.

Conclusion: Great work, you guys. :-)

--
James

[1] I happen to know this because I created a 15Mb /boot for sarti.d.o
and it's always running out of space on there, even with just 2
kernels.

o Chose 3c59x for my network card and got the "Ethernet card not

o Was then dropped into the "Configure the network" dialog box. "Go

o devfs. eww.

o There was no dialog/progress bar while creating partitions which
  took quite some time.

o The system ejected the CDROM and gave me the "System Reboot" dialog;
after I pressed "Continue", it dropped into the "Configure debconf"
dialog, but I wasn't able to do anything with it as the system was
  already rebooting.

* On reboot, the network didn't come up. I got the message below (by

Bug#178073: libdebian-installer: d-shlibs considered harmful

Hi( Martin),

FWIW, d-shlibs has been "fixed" (see followup bug on d-shlibs if you
care for details); you could fix this bug by b-d-ing on the latest
version, if you like.

Yeesh. This isn't the first time either. Could whoever is building
the powerpc builds please do it properly (i.e. so that 'source' (and
'all') doesn't end up in the Architecture: line of the .changes file).
dpkg-buildpackage -B will do this for you.

Bug#120480: boot-floppies: pcmcia removal problems

2001-11-21 Thread James Troup

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.17 (udma100-ext3)

While installing the udma100-ext3 flavour of 3.0.17 boot-floppies on a
Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300, I ran into some problems with the PCMCIA
support.

I configured PCMCIA support which worked fine (correct modules loaded
etc.), I then went to configure the network which also went okay until
at the end when it tried to reload the pcmcia modules. This failed.
In the syslog, I got (rough transcription):

| dbootstrap: ds: device or resource busy
| dbootstrap: i82365: device or resource busy
| dbootstrap: pcmcia_coure: device or resource busy
| insmod: insmod: a module named pcmcia_core already exists
| user.err dbootstrap: an error encountered while trying to load and configure the
|pcmcia modules

cat /proc/modules showed (again, rough transaction):

| serial_cs 0 (unused)
| 3c574_cs 0 (unused)
| ds 0 [serial_cs 3c574_cs]
| i82365 22704 2
| pcmcica_core 0 [serial_cs 3c574_cs ds i82365]

I removed the modules byhand in the correct order and reran the
'configure pcmcia support' step which got me working networking.

This is reproduceable (this is my second install since I didn't take
notes first time round), and if you need more info, I can probably
reinstall again to get more details if you tell me what you need.

Bug#120482: boot-floppies: nitpicks (initial install lacks border + network reconfigure forgets gateway)

2001-11-21 Thread James Troup

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.17 (udma100-ext3)
Severity: minor

[Installing on Tosh Satellite Pro 4300]. Two minor nits:

(1) The initial install is ugly, most of the borders from boxes appear
to be missing. It's fixed once you reboot.

(2) While mucking around with pcmcia stuff, I reconfigured my network
and it managed to remember everything except my gateway which
seems inconsistent?

Woah, that's Really Bad, 2.2.18pre21 has security holes and some nasty
bugs (e.g. MegaRAID incompatibility). What's the problem with pcmcia
modules?

Err, unless there's something special/different about the 2nd CD, that
won't help. It's basically the kernel MegaRAID bug; the only solution
AFAIK is to boot using an older (<= 2.2.14) or newer (>= 2.2.19preX)
kernel[1].

[1] At least those are the versions boundaries we've used that worked;
I don't recall exactly when the bug was introduced or when it was
fixed. The latter at least is probably easy to determine from Alan's
changelogs, if necessary.

 [ ] busybox_0.48-1_i386.deb13-Dec-2000 13:46 238k
 [ ] busybox_0.48-1_i386.udeb 13-Dec-2000 13:4665k

You can't have a .udeb with the same name as a .deb; this is enforced
by katie (i.e. the package will be REJECTed) at JoeyH's specific
request. Also; you could upload them to an upload queue
(e.g. samosa).

Err, woops, typo.

They will be, sorry for the confusion.

.udeb and pools

2000-10-28 Thread James Troup

Hi,

I've added .udeb support to 'da-katie' and tested it (with a test
.udeb from Joey). I'm waiting for Jason to fix apt-ftparchive to
handle .udeb's but that (like the alterations to 'da-katie') is
trivial and shouldn't take long. Just to reiterate, here is how
things will look:

  Actual .udebs + source:

[..]/pool/m/main-menu/main-menu_0.001.dsc
[..]/pool/m/main-menu/main-menu_0.001.tar.gz
[..]/pool/m/main-menu/main-menu_0.001_i386.udeb

  Packages.gz + Sources.gz:

[..]/dists/unstable/main/debian-installer/i386/Packages.gz

The last ("debian-installer/$arch") is pretty much random choice of
various possibilities that have been suggested. It is of course
changeable to anything similar and sensible that you guys want
(e.g. another possibility is: unstable/main/disks-$arch/debian-installer/)

As to the actual implementation of package pools.. that's not going
quite so well. I still hope to be ready for the 2nd, but I've already
lost one weekend to illness, and it seems to be aj's turn this
weekend[1]. If you guys want to get a pile of .udeb uploads ready for
then (assuming you haven't already), feel free. As soon as 'da-katie'
is in place, '.udebs' will Just Work(tm) (at least from an archive
perspective).

--
James

[1] For those wandering how this matters, aj controls 2.2r1, and I'm
not implementing 'da-katie' until we get that out the door.
