OK, I remembered about skipping debian-installer, but wasn't sure about
debian-installer-netboot-images

Bug#1007037: debian-installer: please consider upgrading to 3.0 source format

2022-03-10 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
Source: debian-installer
Version: 20210731+deb11u2
Severity: wishlist
Tags: bookworm sid
Usertags: format1.0 format1.0-kp-nv

Dear maintainer,

This package is among the few (1.9%) that still use source format 1.0 in
bookworm. Please upgrade it to source format 3.0, as (1) this format has many
advantages, as documented in https://wiki.debian.org/Projects/DebSrc3.0 ; (2)
this contributes to standardization of packaging practices.

Please note that this is also a sign that the packaging of this software
could maybe benefit from a refresh. It might be a good opportunity to
look at other aspects as well.

This mass bug filing was discussed on debian-devel@:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2022/03/msg00074.html

Thanks

Lucas

Bug#999249: discover: missing required debian/rules targets build-arch and/or build-indep

2021-11-09 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
Source: discover
Version: 2.1.2-9
Severity: important
Justification: Debian Policy section 4.9
Tags: bookworm sid
User: debian...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: missing-build-arch-indep

Dear maintainer,

Your package does not include build-arch and/or build-indep targets in
debian/rules. This is required by Debian Policy section 4.9, since 2012.
https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html#main-building-script-debian-rules

Please note that this is also a sign that the packaging of this software
could benefit from a refresh. For example, packages using 'dh' cannot be
affected by this issue.

This mass bug filing was discussed on debian-devel@ in
https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2021/11/msg00052.html .
The severity of this bug will be changed to 'serious' after a month.

Best,

Lucas

But aren't all those other reports from either the buster installer, or

I don't understand:
does this mean that the issue that you reported in

considered fixed? And that the situation improved between buster and

Would you be in a position to check a debian 10 install on the same
hardware, and fetch the dmesg output and /var/log/Xorg.0.log after
installation, as well as the list of installed packages (to understand
if firmware packages were installed somehow)?

And then maybe do the same with the bullseye RC1 image?

Also can you confirm that just switching to another console and
installing the firmware package there was enough to fix the issue?

I don't understand whether this is a regression from Debian 10 or not.
For example,

Hi,

Disclaimer: I read the "[AMD/ATI graphics] Missing firmware not declared
/ kernel modules not included in initrd" thread. While my understanding
of the issue is not complete, I'm trying to summarize what I undertood
so far in the hope that others can jump in and fill in the blanks or
correct me.

There are graphic cards whose in-kernel drivers require non-free
firmwares. Typically AMD/ATI cards that require firmware-amd-graphics[1]
to work with the radeon, amdgpu and r128 drivers; or NVIDIA cards that
require firmware-misc-nonfree to work with the nouveau driver.

[1] https://packages.debian.org/unstable/firmware-amd-graphics

With Debian 10, the behaviour was that the installation succeeded
without installing firmware-* packages, and then, and the first boot, X
would start in a "degraded" mode (using, for example, the vesa driver).
The user would generally then install the firmware package (or, in the
case of NVidia, switch to the proprietary drivers).

With Debian 11, the installation also succeeds, but then at first boot,
X fails to work correctly. What happens here is unclear: reports vary
between "black screen" (but does the system works if the user switches to
console mode?), "garbled screen", "system crash" (but maybe the user did
not notice that the system works in console mode).

It looks like the three open paths for resolution are:

A) understand and restore the behaviour from Debian 10, that is, get X
to work in a degraded mode after installation. How it worked with Debian
10 (and why it doesn't with Debian 11) is unknown.

B) In the installer, detect that firmware-amd-graphics or
firmware-misc-nonfree should be installed, and either install it (?),
or redirect the user to the unofficial installer that includes them.

C) Do nothing and document this in the release notes

The main blocking factor for progress seems to be that not enough people
have both hardware that is not supported (laptops/desktops with AMD or
NVidia graphic cards), and the knowledge and time to investigate this.

Hi,

After further investigations, it seems that the bug is related to:

> Jan 21 08:02:09 kernel: [0.00] Command line:
> BOOT_IMAGE=/install.amd/vmlinuz vga=788 initrd=/install.amd/initrd.gz ---

Which is a bit stupid: instead of passing many parameters on the
cmdline, we could just use 'auto url='

Still, there's a regression in d-i, when installing with
install preseed/url=https://blop.info/pub/preseed.cfg

With debian-buster-DI-alpha4-amd64-netinst.iso, the installer asks
questions about language, location, keyboard, hostname, and domainname,
but then proceeds until the end of the installation (which is expected).

With the current debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso, the installer asks
the same questions, proceeds with the installation, but then, near the
end, asks the 'Use a network mirror?' question as described in this bug.

Well, FTR it's exactly the kind of hardware I was using yesterday (with
the current jessie installer)

After encountering this problem again, I understood something that
wasn't clear to me before (but is quite obvious when you think about
it).
What you put in the preseeding file has no effect for network detection
(at least in the case where this file is fetched over the network).

For me, setting netcfg/choose_interface=auto on the kernel command-line
(in amd64/boot-screens/adtxt.cfg, in my case) did the trick.

So it's possible that this bug could be closed, but I wasn't the
original submitter. Paul, do you have a way to check again?

Bug#700292: netcfg/choose_interface=auto fails to select eth1 when eth0 has no link

 If you or anyone else needs a way to test this, you can use a libvirt
 based virtual machine and run this command after setting up the VM:

 virsh domif-setlink machine mac down --persistent

Hi,

I'm hit by this bug. My case is simple: two interfaces, only one with link (and
netcfg correctly detects the link only on one interface, so the expected
behaviour of just pick up the interface with the link would work).

So the known workaround for this bug is:
Still set:
  d-i netcfg/choose_interface select auto
add IPAPPEND 2 in debian-installer/amd64/boot-screens/adtxt.cfg, so
that it looks like:

label auto
menu label ^Automated install
kernel debian-installer/amd64/linux
append auto=true priority=critical vga=788
initrd=debian-installer/amd64/initrd.gz --- quiet
IPAPPEND 2

However, even with that, it doesn't select automatically the bootif interface:
- I get BOOTIF=mac in /proc/cmdline
- the installer detects it (I get the Found interface eth2 with link-layer
address mac)
- but I still get prompted for the interface

After booting with DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer DEBCONF_DEVELOPER=debug (Cyril
wasn't sure which one was working), I see that:
- netcfg/choose_interface gets SET to eth2: Intel Corporation [ rest of
desc]
- I see the SUBST netcfg/choose_interface ifchoices eth2: [desc], eth3: [desc]
- I see the INPUT critical netcfg/choose_interface

So I think that the bottom line is: why did I get prompted by this INPUT since
netcfg/choose_interface was already SET before? Shouldn't the priority be lower
than critical?

For reference, the code is in netcfg-common.c, in netcfg_get_interface.
The corresponding code for the input is:

else if (num_interfaces  1) {
*numif = num_interfaces;
/* remove the trailing , , which confuses cdebconf */
ptr[strlen(ptr) - 2] = '\0';

debconf_subst(client, netcfg/choose_interface, ifchoices, ptr);
free(ptr);

asked = (debconf_input(client, critical, netcfg/choose_interface)
== CMD_SUCCESS);
ret = debconf_go(client);

/* If the question is not asked, honor preseeded interface name.
 * However, if it was preseeded to auto, or there was no old value,
 * leave it set to defif. */
if (!asked  strlen(old_selection)  strcmp(old_selection, auto) !=
0) {
debconf_set(client, netcfg/choose_interface, old_selection);
}

free(old_selection);

if (ret)
return ret;

debconf_get(client, netcfg/choose_interface);
inter = client-value;

if (!inter)
netcfg_die(client);
}

I also tried with d-i netcfg/choose_interface select eth2 and BOOTIF in
/proc/cmdline, and I still get prompted.

With d-i netcfg/choose_interface select eth2 and no BOOTIF in /proc/cmdline,
I also get prompted! So this is more severely broken than I thought.

 fr(oss) is not a selectable option. Only fr(latin9) is. Also, simply
 use

 d-i keymap select fr(latin9)

 as documented in the installation manual.

Where is that documented, actually?

https://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/amd64/apbs04.html.en#preseed-l10n
says:
# Keyboard selection.
d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select us
# d-i keyboard-configuration/toggle select No toggling

Same for http://www.debian.org/releases/jessie/example-preseed.txt

Also, is there a way to find the list of valid values?
d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select fr
did not work for me. I haven't tried fr(latin9). I guess it would have
worked...

Thanks,

Lucas

status of d-i development -- call for help?

2013-08-15 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
Hi,

It has been suggested to me that the work on d-i could use more
manpower. AFAIK, the current active maintainer is Cyril Brulebois, but
I've been told that he could use some help for the jessie cycle. :)
Cyril, am I correct?

I think that something that is worth trying is to write a call for help
with a job description, outlining what are the required skills to
contribute to d-i.

What usually works great is to provide a micro-task that allows
prospective contributors to check that they have the basic skills
required (that also has the advantage to detect people that don't have
the required skills, and avoid losing time mentoring them). For
example, adding one's name in an 'About' box.

We could then ensure that that job description gets wide coverage (dpn,
dda bits).

Could someone write such a job description, or help me write it? I'm
totally clueless about d-i development, so I would need some help,
unfortunately.

  Hi,

  During a rebuild of all packages in sid, your package failed to build on
  amd64.

 Can you test this again? Maybe there was something wrong with your
 build environment?

   ./xmlreader KeyboardNames.pl
   Couldn't open ckb/rules/xorg.xml:
   No such file or directory at ./xmlreader line 67

 The file ckb/rules/xorg.xml exists in the source package and it is a
 static file - nothing removes or changes it.

Please post your build log (including dependencies installation) so we
can diff it with mine.

 Those packages will be synced when rc1 is out and then they'll all
 build again in lenny.

it's not really easy to do, but it would be possible if absolutely
necessary. I've added this to my TODO list, but probably won't do that
for a while, so this might happen again in the future. Will try to be
careful when the package name rings a bell, though.

This rebuild was done with gcc 4.3 instead of gcc 4.2, because gcc 4.3

 It's not set anywhere, so I expect the intention is that the person who does
 the mass build does an 'export ONLINE=n' if he knows that a network
 connection is not available and still wants to test building choose-mirror.

It worked fine for a long time, and started failing recently...

Bug#408228: cdebconf: uninstallable under some conditions because of dependancy cycle

  Recommended packages:
libft-perl libatk1.0-data libglib2.0-data hicolor-icon-theme libgtk2.0-bin
libfribidi0 perl-doc debconf-utils
  The following NEW packages will be installed:

[...]
  E: Couldn't configure pre-depend x11-common for libxft2, probably a
dependency cycle.

I could reproduce it outside piuparts. If debconf is not installed, and you try
to install cdebconf, you run into a problem:
cdebconf depends on libxft2
libxft2 pre-depends on x11-common
x11-common pre-depends on debconf | debconf-2.0

For some reason, apt doesn't understand that it can solve this by installing
first debconf, then x11-common, then cdebconf...

Bug#395262: Arch: all package FTBFS due to test needing network access - RC?

  Some packages (e.g choose-mirror) fetch a newer version of a file during

  since the file is not missing from the package if the network is not
  available.

 In general, I strongly suspect that fetching updated source during build
 is RC due to a violation of the Social Contract: the source we are
 shipping intentionally does not correspond to the binary package.

 I'm not sure if the above applies to choose-mirror. In particular, if
 the file shipped in the binary is its own source, then it doesn't.
 However, I'd still say it's bad idea, and a bug (maybe even RC). Some
 more general reasons (not all necessarily apply to choose-mirror)

 * changes to the package are not reflected in the changelog
 * random network or remote server issues can cause a broken (or
   worse) build. What happens if the file on the server is corrupted?
 * builds are no longer repeatable. Different source may even wind up
   built on different architectures.
 * the package is much harder to NMU. What should be a spelling fix
   suddenly becomes a large change (due to the automated source
   pull), unbeknown to the NMU-er. Same problem for the security team.
 * the supposedly-signed source package isn't really; it's pulling
   unsigned source for the build

 Also, depending on what is being downloaded from the network, there
 could be security issues. What happens if the server is compromised?

While I fully agree with you on all points, I think that this should be
discussed post-etch with the general question of in which environment
are packages supposed to build ?. There are other similar issue, like:
- should packages allow to build as root ? (aegis, bazaar, subversion
  don't)
- should packages build the same if they are built in a minimal debian
  environment only satisfying their b-dep, and in a system with lots of
  useless packages installed ?

There are RC bugs to fix now ;)

Bug#395262: choose-mirror: requires internet access to build

2006-10-25 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
Package: choose-mirror
Version: 2.08
Severity: serious
Justification: Requiring network access during build causes lots of problems

Hi,

Building choose-mirror seems to require network access, since it
retrieves a file found on cvs.d.o:
if [ $ONLINE != n ]; then \
  if wget -nv
'http://cvs.debian.org/*checkout*/webwml/english/mirror/Mirrors.masterlist?rev=HEADcvsroot=webwmlcontent-type=text/plain'
-O -  Mirrors.masterlist.new  \
test -s Mirrors.masterlist.new; then \
mv Mirrors.masterlist.new Mirrors.masterlist; \
   else \
  rm -f Mirrors.masterlist.new; \
   fi; \
fi

Quoting from #393900 (against libwww-myspace-perl):
Accessing the network during build is bad for these reasons:
- It's a privacy concern: without being asked, some information about
  the system is being sent to a remote host;
- It should be possible to autobuild the package on a buildd with no
  network access.
- The test has a high probability to fail lateron because of the
  referenced host (temporarily) disappearing.

Making ONLINE default to n would probably solve the problem.

Thank you,

 This doesn't cause a build failure, because all errors are checked and a
 failure in wget is ignored. Downgrading accordingly.

Agreed, but one problem with wget is that it tries extremly hard to
download files (retries 20 times by default, with a 900 seconds timeout
each time !).

I would recommend changing the wget call so that it runs wget
--timeout=60 --tries=2, which would be much more tolerable than waiting
for 20*900=18000 seconds.

Tagging +patch, even if this is just a workaround to make the situation
slightly better.

 Please explain in which specific case this is needed.

 AFAICT wget fails immediately if it cannot resolve the host name it is
 looking for, so AFAICT you are talking about a setup here where an
 address does resolve, but cannot be accessed.
 I don't know if we want to make any changes to defaults to allow for that
 sort of (broken) setup.

I run archive-wide tests on a HPC cluster where DNS resolution works,
but it's not possible to reach the outside world to protect it from
possible DDOS attacks. Building choose-mirror just takes hours on this
cluster because of this. I agree that this setup is probably not
perfect, but I'm not in a position to change it currently.

If you don't want to add a workaround for this now, please at least
reopen the bug and set severity to wishlist. I will try to work on it
post-etch.

Building debian-installer

2004-10-31 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
Hi,

I am working on a custom Ubuntu distribution, making changes both in the
installer (I'd like to backport debian's partman) and in the packages
list.

I've downloaded Ubuntu's branch of debian-cd, but can't understand how
to build debian-installer so that debian-cd scripts can use it. The only
info I've found is on
http://wiki.debian.net/index.cgi?DebianInstallerBuild, which doesn't
seem to be up to date.

Could somebody point me to relevant documentations, or describe the
process of building debian-installer, then building a CD with it ? (Do I
need to actually build debian-installer if I'm only backporting debian's
partman to ubuntu ?)

Thank you,
