Bug#788384: installation-reports: Boots into black screen due to modesetting on nVidia card
Package: installation-reports Severity: important Dear Maintainer, See below. -- Package-specific info: Boot method: USB stick Image version: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/8.1.0/amd64/iso-cd/debian-8.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso Date: jun 8 22:49 Machine: Custom PC from 2008 Partitions: Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [E] Detect network card:[O] Configure network: [O] Detect CD: [O] Load installer modules: [O] Clock/timezone setup: [O] User/password setup:[O] Detect hard drives: [O] Partition hard drives: [O] Install base system:[O] Install tasks: [O] Install boot loader:[O] Overall install:[O] Comments/Problems: 1. Everything seemed to go fine, except the first (and subsequent) boots. The system booted into a black screen and was thus not usable at all. I had only installed the base system, as I unselected everything in tasksel, as I wanted to upgrade to testing later. After some searching on the web, I found that it may be caused by nouveau and kernel mode setting. So, I tried booting with 'nomodeset' in the kernel options and then it booted fine. After that I could upgrade to testing (which was my goal) and installing the proprietary nVidia drivers fixed the issue. I'm writing this report after having fixed it and upgraded to testing, so attached information may be wrong. 2. After installing GNOME, it appeared that gnome-terminal was not working. After trying to start it up, it gave the following error: Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.gnome.Terminal exited with status 8 I was able to fix this by editing /etc/locale.gen (I uncommented the locale that I selected with the installer ("en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8") and also one for "nl_NL.UTF-8 UTF-8"). After that, it worked fine. I have no idea why this file is not properly updated by the installer (or actually, how that file is supposed to be created at all). But clearly, something had gone wrong there. Bug#413354: debian-installer: Boot screen should have notification about graphical installer
Package: debian-installer Severity: wishlist I think the initial boot screen should mention somewhere how to start the graphical installer. The text installer is the default, but without any kind of notification, a user would never use the graphical installer, unless he happens to know about it or reads the manual (most don't, of course). -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-4-k7 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". If you can't provide the necessary information, I will have to close this report without actually knowing if it's really fixed. I expected a partition table there, obviously. Since there was none, I thought the RAID controller was somehow not detected or at least the kernel module was not loaded. I rebooted with a Knoppix cd to find out that the kernel module that fits the controller is 'aacraid'. Rebooted again with the d-i cd, and went to the console with CTRL-ALT-F2 in the partition menu to load the aacraid driver ("modprobe aacraid"). This didn't help. Rebooted, and did the same during the network-config menu. This did the trick: apparently the partition menu doesn't 'refresh' for the new situation. After this, installation went on as expected. One minor thing: the graphics card was not detected. The xfree86 dialog suggested 'vesa'. I changed it to 'mga', which worked, but it set a resolution of only 800x600, while 1280x1024 would have been ideal. Another minor thing: maybe it should install an SMP kernel if more than one CPU is detected. All in all: the installer definately needs improvement for the case of a non-detected disk controller. Maybe the cause was that there is also an ATA controller onboard. On the other hand: I'm impressed with the d-i as it is now! Keep up the good work, people!
