Comments/Problems:

Everything worked. I used a network cable instead of the non-free WiFi
firmware required. The installed system did not have working printing
in GNOME, but I'll report that separately.

For reference, to boot the Debian netinst from a USB stick with libreboot,
I had to type 'c' and then 'search_grub usb' in the libreboot menu.
Selecting 'Boot from USB' did not work, but I experienced the same with
other bootable USB images so I think it is a libreboot issue rather than
a problem with the Debian netinst ISO image.

Comments/Problems:

Everything went fine except that I was not able to boot the machine
from a RAID1 device, neither ext4-on-LVM-on-RAID1 or ext4-on-
RAID1.  This is likely a Petitboot BIOS issue rather than anything to
do with Debian.  I resolved the problem for now by using a separate
non-RAID /boot partition.

I will never have access to the console for these machines, so if it
stops during boot I would just kill the machine and create a new one.
The machines are created automatically and will do what it is intended
to do until it is destroyed. If it crashes or dies mid-way, then a new
machine will be created that hopefully will work better. I am SSH'ing
into the machines now, but that is just for debugging and testing things
out -- for deployment, I would probably never log into the machines.

Nice trick, thanks for sharing. I still believe it would be useful to
support this behaviour out of the box, it should be what most people
preseeding machines that never will be used through a console wants.

Bug#799976: wish: support passwd/root-login=false AND passwd/make-user=false

2015-09-24 Thread Simon Josefsson
Package: debian-installer
Severity: wishlist

On some system that I preseed-install, I don't want any root password
set nor do I want a normal user account. I get access to the system via
SSH, using a public-key that I populate using a late_command.

I have tried the following combination:

d-i passwd/root-login boolean false
d-i passwd/make-user boolean false

However, it still asks me for a normal user account name. So I reckon
that what I want is simply not support, hence this wishlist report.

Is there any reason why this is a bad idea?

/Simon

After install, the machine couldn't boot. First I booted the CD in

Bug#776329: installation-reports: Jessie RC1 on Dell Vostro 550

2015-01-27 Thread Simon Josefsson
Hi. Thanks for reply.

For the record (I forgot to mention this), the internal mouse works
fine after installation though.

Re -5, I believe the kernel is requesting it even after loading -6
(which appears to be sufficient). I can get the actual log entry when
I get home.

Don't worry about spending any time fixing the firmware issues -- I'd
rather have you work on stuff related to free software and getting the
release out. Thought I'd just send an install report so my experience
was documented, in case the documentation of my problem is useful for
anyone else.

/Simon

 Hi Simon,

 and thanks for your report!

 Simon Josefsson si...@josefsson.org (2015-01-27):
Installation went fine, but some nits:

  1) I tried a graphical install, but the builtin mouse did not work
well: moving the cursor didn't work, but clicking buttons did.

I really should get my hands on some such laptop to debug this issue.

Since we have several of those already, I'm not sure cloning a
separate bug report is needed here.

  2) It queries for IWLWIFI firmware and mentions the following
 firmwares:

iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode
  iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode

Note how the filenames are duplicated. This seems like a cosmetic
problem?

Deduplicating shouldn't cost much, yeah. $files and $modules in the
 check_missing() function of check-missing-firmware.sh (package
hw-detect), if somebody wants to take a look. Can be cloned away.

  3) After inserting a USB stick with firmware, it loads
iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode fine (and wifi works). However, it still
 complains about missing firmware files:

 iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode

I click 'No' and continue installation. The -5 firmware file is
not included in the firmware-iwlwifi package -- should it be?

ISTR there's some kind of versioning here, and without knowing about
it much, I'd guess -6 obsoleted -5 and is sufficient there.

Wifi appears to be working fine without it, though. Or should
the installer be tought that the firmware isn't needed?

I'm not familiar with these components, but: maybe the firmware check
doesn't distinguish between early and later requests? I'd expect the
kernel not to complain anymore about a missing -5 if it's presented
with -6 in the meanwile. That should be easy to check in your
 installer logs (/var/log/installer/syslog).

If the kernel indeed complains about -5 on the second attempt, I'm not
sure how we can deal with that; if it doesn't, chaning check_missing()
to only look at later kernel logs shouldn't be hard; in which case
 that can be cloned away.

  4) The machine also requires firmware for the builtin NIC
 (rtl_nic/rtl8168e-2.fw) but I don't get a question about it.
While this may be intention (there is just one global
 load-non-free-firmware-yes-no?), it is a bit sub-optimal. Maybe
I only want to load firmware for one of the hardware pieces in my
machine and not the others? This doesn't seem possible. So this
is a feature request to prompt with explicit filenames for every
 different hardware separately.

Again, not familiar with these components, so I'll stick don't know
 for now, sorry.

 Mraw,
 KiBi.

Installation went fine, but some nits:

1) I tried a graphical install, but the builtin mouse did not work
well: moving the cursor didn't work, but clicking buttons did.

2) It queries for IWLWIFI firmware and mentions the following
   firmwares:

  iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode
iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode

Note how the filenames are duplicated. This seems like a cosmetic
  problem?

3) After inserting a USB stick with firmware, it loads
iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode fine (and wifi works). However, it still
   complains about missing firmware files:

   iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode iwlwifi-6000g2b-5.ucode

I click 'No' and continue installation. The -5 firmware file is
not included in the firmware-iwlwifi package -- should it be? Wifi
appears to be working fine without it, though. Or should the
installer be tought that the firmware isn't needed?

4) The machine also requires firmware for the builtin NIC
(rtl_nic/rtl8168e-2.fw) but I don't get a question about it. While
this may be intention (there is just one global
   load-non-free-firmware-yes-no?), it is a bit sub-optimal. Maybe I
only want to load firmware for one of the hardware pieces in my
machine and not the others? This doesn't seem possible. So this
is a feature request to prompt with explicit filenames for every
   different hardware separately.

Thanks,
Simon

Comments/Problems:

Installation went fine overall. This was a graphical GNOME installation
with the default tasksel's plus ssh server.

One thing that hit me was the 10GB default root partition size. The
initial installation took around 4GB. After installing a couple of
packages I'm using [1] I had used around 11GB of the root partition.

A root of 10GB seems too little these days, especially for a desktop
installation, and considering that I have a 1TB disk in the system.

I decided to re-install the system and partition different due to this.

Re clock/timezone setup: I don't recall any question around clock. ntp
is running, so I guess I'm fine.

Jessie beta1 on Dell PowerEdge T410 installation was successful. I had to

Comments/Problems:

Without manually copying the bnx2 firmware files, installation would fail
once the installer try to access the network to download packages.
Configuring network appeared to work, but didn't, and looking at the
kernel log suggests missing firmware.

Bug#700834: +1 to hide passwords by default

2013-04-07 Thread Simon Josefsson
Hi. I recently reported a similar issue in #704853. I would prefer if
the default was to mask out WLAN passwords displayed on screen. A
toggle to display/hide password would be nice, but pending that I
believe it is safer to hide the password instead of displaying it.

I can't find a pointer right now, but that was discussed on this list

Yes, there is something somewhere else. Can't find it either, though.

Yes, thanks for the pointer. Se let's keep this bug (#704853) open to
track auto-detection of WEP vs PSK. Btw, #700924 is about my bonus

This was a graphical install of debian-wheezy-DI-rc1-i386-netinst.iso on
a Dell Precision M65 laptop, using Swedish localisation, and with
non-free iwl3945 wireless drivers loaded from a USB stick during
installation.

The installation completed fine but I had two minor issues/concerns:

1) The WLAN password is displayed on screen. User account passwords are
not displayed on screen, so presumably it is a bug for WLAN passwords to
be displayed. Bonus points for a Display password button to toggle
display of the password.

2) Wouldn't it be possible to auto-detect WEP vs PSK2 instead of asking?

With same ISO and same mirror (and the fact ftp.se.d.o DNS entry didn't change
between the initial report and this mail), I cannot reproduce this report.

Could a temporary network issue cause the error above? I'm not sure
what the error really means. Or maybe the mirror ran some mirror'ing
script so the site was temporarily invalid?

Bug#601381: installation-reports: lenovo x201 laptop with d-i 20101025-09:05

2010-10-25 Thread Simon Josefsson
Package: installation-reports
Severity: normal

Installation went fine except for these issues:

* No wireless WPA2 support. I understand this won't be supported until
squeeze+1
* DHCP configuration did not work, I had to supply IP address manually
* My Windows 7 partitions were not available in the grub boot menu, even though
it recognized that win7 was installed. Running 'update-grub' manually resolved
this.

Bug#410087: SATA+PATA on MS-6728 Neo2 865PE leads to oops on boot

2007-02-07 Thread Simon Josefsson
Package: installation-reports

Hi! I wanted to install etch on my old desktop PC, so a few hours ago
I downloaded the 20070207-1 image from:

http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso

This machine is an i386 MSI Neo2 motherboard with SATA and PATA. For
more system details, see the BIOS outputs in the images below. There
is one 74GB SATA disk and one PATA NEC CD-ROM.

To reproduce my problem, I followed these steps:

1) Enter bios, chose 'Reset to high-performance defaults'. (Choosing
'BIOS defaults' leads to the same, I think.)
2) Enter 'integrated peripherals' and change 'PATA only' to 'SATA+PATA' and
change 'Legacy mode' to 'Native mode'.
3) Change device boot-order, to make it boot of the CD.
4) Boot the debian installer, press enter on the first prompt.

Then I get a kernel oops. I don't know how to write the details down
for you, so I took some pictures, uploaded to:

http://josefsson.org/etch/

The last two images include BIOS version information stuff. Note that
the CD is 'Secondary slave' and the HD is 'Third Master', which seems
rather odd.

There is a simple work-around: In the BIOS, chose 'Native mode', 'SATA
only', and toggle the 'Keep PATA enabled' option. This makes
SATA+PATA and the installer work. Btw, with these changes, the CD is
still 2nd slave and the HD is still third master.

Even though there is a workaround, I thought you'd might be interested
in hearing about this. My configuration looked rather basic, and the
error message I got was not pretty.

Thanks,
Simon
