While on the subject, I've written some notes (see bottom of [1]) about
changes
Involved when building test images based on the new packages.
It's my intention to test and see which of the currently open bugs still
reproduce,
So that once we'll do the switch, we'll also know exatctly what gets
fixed.

While we're on the subject, I'd like to point out an interesting
Discussion [1] which took place on the dejavu mailing list; what's
Interesting in particular, are the fontconfig patches included by
Nicolas Mailhot
And Jay Hobson (Fedora team) which should make It possible to fine
tuning the fonts
On an installed system.
It should be possible to decide which font should use and/or should not
use
A particular language.

While this may seem OT on this thread (I hope not too much), I think it
might be
Useful especially for languages where the default font installed by the
task
does not cover as many languages as Dejavu or freefont.

I'm not sure they need help on packaging; I might be wrong but
I don't think the gtk is not ready because of technical problems.

You are right, but why do you need a debian package to test the patch?
And again: have you tried to build a mini.iso based on the new set of
Libraries? Wouldn't it make sense to get confident with it before
concentrating
On making an udeb you would not know how to use and test?

> Note: I feel much anger in your writing...

Yes, your message did piss me off very much indeed.
You would delay things by saying "i think nothing should be done until
this issue is clarified" because you have not clear how the libraries
work.
Note that it's perfectly ok having doubts, but before telling that in
name of
The d-I team to the package maintainer, you could discuss it on irc/ml
and make
Sure there are some problems. IMO it just confuses things.

> I don't consider it my responasbility to fix those images, as

> I just have time for testing.

Huh?
What do you expect then?
You write on d-boot "hey, g-I is fucked on ppc" as you did with Cyrillic
fonts,
And then you expect within a couple of hours to find a hundred messages
on your
Mailbox asking for details or providing a fix?
Why don't you just try to provide proper reports so that the problems
can be fixed?
You lately reported that the crash on ppc happens because of the
touchpad fix, but you
Did not even try to revert the patch and see if that is the real
problem...
If that's your idea of testing things I'd say is not very effective and
as a consequence it
Takes a long time before problems get fixed.

The colour problem disappears: it's one of the first things we did
In Extremadura. Sven built the libraries and a test image and, apart
For a problem with some buttons (not used inside g-i), everything looks
Beautiful. I don't think you need a deb to see thet.

No, it does not exist yet; cairo is a requirement. Unofficial cairo
Could be used, true, but we'll need it officially anyway.
I think the gnome team have all the skills needed to package
gtk+-directfb,
So IMO it's not a technical problem and of course you can try to do it
Yourself, but I don't know how useful that would be.

Cairo is fine and, apart from the couple of things pointed out by Frans,
package can be
used for compiling gtk+: why should we delay things? why should the
library be
renamed? there's no such an issue and things have been handled properly
via
.pc file.
have you checked the packages? (yes, I have)
Would you please double check before sendig such messages to package
maintainers and
Multiple MLs?

The library builds fine already (see [2] and [3]).
Are you familiar with rebuilding all the libraries, the needed udebs and
the mini.iso
(I know you've rebuilt from source Dave's package)?
have you managed to rebuild the new libraries and to create a g-i image
based
on those? if so, can you please provide a link to a ppc mini.iso based
on the new libs?
>From one of your messages on d-boot ([1]) you say that current ppc g-i
is
broken, so shouldn't the crash be fixed before trying to use the new
libraries
or do you blindly assume that everythings will be magically ok with the
new libs?

your help is of course _very_ welcome, but to me it looks like you're
doing
the wrong thing at the wrong time: rebuilding the libs from scratch was
very useful
a while back (before and soon after Extremadura), when Mike needed the
support for putting
the dfb backend into cvs and at the time Attilio and myself spent alot
of time and effort
on doing this (see wikis).
now what is needed is testing the packages produced by the official
maintainers and not
duplicating their work or delaying other people' work.

Davide

I could have made it even simpler by saying that

Is the same as "libcairo2-dev_1.1.6-1_i386.deb" apart the compilation

That's excatly what I was about to write;
I'll rephrase it just in case it miight be useful :

1)non-directfb packages not needed by the installer (no udeb is needed)
- libcairo2_1.1.6-1_i386.deb
- libcairo2-dev_1.1.6-1_i386.deb

2) directfb packages

- libcairo2-directfb_1.1.6-1_i386.deb
Runtime library in case anyone will use directfb application on their
host
(actually this is not strictly needed for g-I itself)

- libcairo2-directfb-dev_1.1.6-1_i386.deb
This will be neede on the host to compile (link in particular)
cdebconf-gtk, will be used to
Compile gtk+directfb_2.8.17

- libcairo2-directfb-udeb_1.1.6-1_i386.udeb
This udeb will be installed in the g-I image and will be used as runtime
library

Please don't hesitate to ask if anything were not clear.

Taking a quick look, seems you have not compiled the
libcairo2-directfb-dev_1.1.6-1_i386.deb or whatever
it should be called (in a nutshell we also need a development deb
package compiled with directfb backend) : it is needed to compile the
cdebconf-gtk udeb.

In the meanwhile I think we can test the udeb you provided.

Hostname not updated

2004-10-08 Thread Viti Davide
Hi,
I tried the pre-rc2 installer on my laptop (Toshiba a30-303); apart from
the bug #265183 regarding my adsl connection, I had problems starting
the Gnome session.
During installation I was asked to choose a hostname and I accidentally
choosed the default one ("debian").
Later on, when given the chance, I scrolled trought the main menu and
used another name ("slurp"); it turns out that /etc/hosts does not
contain "slurp" but still has "debian" as hostname. Haven't found such
report in the mailing list, so if this is a known problem I'm sorry.

Hope this helps,

More infos for D-I testers

2004-07-06 Thread Viti Davide
Hi,
I thought that it could be useful both for developers and for testers if
the d-I images were associated to a file explainig which features
testers should focus on: occasional testers would probably send
installation reports as usual without paying too much attention to this
file, but more experienced testers or people willing to help could focus
on particular aspects of the release.
Don't know if it could make sense but since I was reading this:

"Your name sounds french: did you install in French or English? We
don't have that much install reports for Sparc in languages other than
English."

As an answer to an installation report I thought it could be really
useful...
If the file existed the user cuold point out the details without being
asked to do so.

Installatio report. base-config problems

2004-07-01 Thread Viti Davide
Hi,
I tried to install sarge using tc1 (sarge-i386-netinst.iso) on my new
laptop (Toshiba A30-303) with pppoe. I'm not a guru (I'm a newbie)

Everything went pretty smooth; when I got to configuring apt sources in
the 2nd stage and I pressed "back" and exited from the installation
system. Run pppoeconf from a shell and I got a perfectly running
connection.
At this point I run "base-config" by hand, selected an italian mirror,
choose tasksel to select some stuff (I whish I could select only gnome
components instead of wasting band to fetch kde debs) and started
downloading debs... About 2 long hours.

The last deb fetched was "mozilla-browser" wich could not be retrieved
properly: complained about wrong md5. First I tried to select a couple
of different mirrors with no success. Every time base-config warned me
about the problem and brought me back to the main menu: I didn't know
how to proceed with the unpacking and configuration of all those debs I
downloaded previously. Given my poor knowledge of apt-get, dpkg and that
sort of tools, I had the idea of running dselect: I managed to remove
mozilla from the packages and I managed to go on with the installation.

I finally got gdm running but something must be missing because the only
session that brings me to something usable is a poor failsafe xterm: if
I try to run a gnome session or a kde session the background debian
image is loaded, I can move the pointer but nothing else happens.
What should I configure/install in order to use the graphical interface?

Thanx in advance for your help

Davide

PS: the installer is definitely getting there!

PPP(oe) problem and installation report

2004-06-17 Thread Viti Davide
Hi,

I'll soon have an ADSL in my flat and I'm playing with d-i on a
Windoze machine running VMware just to get confident with the
installation process in order to get Debian up and running ASAP. I saw
a few threads discussed lately on this list about PPPoe and from what
I got it should be possible to use the businesscard image. Here's a
sort of diary of my tests; in the netinst installation I found a bug so
read on if you're interested. Sorry if I haven't reported a bugreport
but I'm a newbie and at the present I have limited access to the
internet.

---
I tried using the businesscard (tc1) image;
---

1) I booted with "expert" parameter
2) choose languae
3) choose country or region
4) Select kb layout
5) detect and mount cdrom
6) load installer components from CD:
 ppp-modules-2.4.26-1-386-di
7) detect network hardware

now I'm offered to configure the network (pppoe has not been even
mentioned yet). If I choose to go on with network configuration I can
choose between DHCP or static IP addr so I try to go back and see if I
can do anything about pppoe using a shell...

8) befor running the shell I set up my disk partition
9) i finally run the shell and press p but nothing about
pppoe comes up.

/cdrom/pool/main/l/linux-kernel-di-i386/ppp-modules-2.4.26-1-386-di_0.62

/lib/modules/2.4.26-1-386/kernel/drivers/net/ppp_deflate.o
/lib/modules/2.4.26-1-386/kernel/drivers/net/ppp_async.o

so I "modprobe pppoe" but now I don't know what to do to set up a
connection with the provider

10) I try to install the base system hoping to get installed the
necessary
to set it up but it (obiouvsy) fails getting the Release file from the
network.

I give up because as a newbie there's nothing more I can do so
maybe there's a way to set up the pppoe connection but I haven't found
it.

--
now I try with the netinst tc1 iso
--

point 1-8 are the same of the previous installation
9) instead of running the shell this time I install the base system
   ( I choose kernel 2.4)
10) I install GRUB (probably out of the scope of the test but...)
11) I finish the installation and reboot the machine
12) setup users and pwds as to have at least a root account
13) configure and enable ppp
even if i don't think that this has to do with pppoe I give it a try...

"Create Create a connection named provider"
 "Quit Exit this utility"

to me it doesn't look very good... I think
"Create a connection named provider"
"Exit this utility"

would be much better and intuitive, anyway...

* here' the bug **

I opt for "Create a connection named provider" and when I have to
configure dns I decide to go back with "cancel" then i try again to
select "Create a connection named provider" and nothing happens.
Instead of having the chance to configure dns as I did before nothing
happens.

As for the pppoe connection I open a new terminal and there are
commands like pppoeconf so it should be possible to set up the
connection.

I hope this message hasn't been too long and boring!
Could anyone please formulate which steps should be followed in order
to perform a pppoe installation (maybe a link or just a list of files to
be
modified would be more than enough)

thanx a lot in advance,

Davide

Re: Bug#249766: PCMCIA 3c589B ethernet card NOT DETECTED

2004-05-19 Thread Viti Davide
Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 1690CDT and I've had so many troubles with a
PCMCIA Digicom Palladio Dongless ethernet card.
To get it working with Woody it took me a long time.
I tried almost every version of the installer so far at sometimes it was
properly detected and installed and sometimes not; beta4 does not detect
it.
After the installer told me it couldn't detect an ethernet card I just
unplugged it, re-plugged in and asked the installer to detect it It
worked.

I hope it works for you too.
Ciao
