Will not install! Returns the error "Depends libstlport4.6c2 but is not not installable." I installed all of the libraries that did not install during initial installation, but keeps reporting the same error! So ... how is the OpenOffice supposed to work? Where is this "libstlport4.6c2" file found? How do I obtain, download, and install this library? What is the fix to OpenOffice? Do I install an older version of Debian in order to have a working OpenOffice? Seems like this is a major problem, beings that this is a major software package that users would be using. Furthermore, I use OpenOffice on my Xandros box and need a common (standard) office package to use. I will be on a business trip next week and would like to have a working laptop for the trip. I will install Xandros on the laptop if need be since the OpenOffice is working in that distributions. I have several plans for Debian in the future, but need a working office package as well.

Bug#283184: debian-installer: Lilo fails when configuring LVM over raid during installation
Package: debian-installer Severity: important This is an older Dell Dimension desktop with Bios version A05 and a PIII-450. I am using the Sarge RC2 net-installer. Using the expert26 install, attempting to use LVM on top of raid-1. Install raid-1 across two IDE hard drives, raid device md0, configured as two physical raid partitions of 6GB each (hda1 and hdb1). info: /bin/report-hw: discover: ;;;Unknown;Maxtor 90650U2;/dev/hda (6GB - ide1 master) info: /bin/report-hw: discover: ;;;Unknown;WDC WD84AA;/dev/hdb (8GB - ide1 slave) Make md0 an lvm partition, configure volume group vg00 and four logical volumes: info: /bin/report-hw: df: /dev/mapper/vg00-root_lv 575813 64563480530 12% /target info: /bin/report-hw: df: /dev/mapper/vg00-home_lv 1965459 8239 1852363 0% /target/home info: /bin/report-hw: df: /dev/mapper/vg00-usr_lv 1965459 82778 1777824 4% /target/usr info: /bin/report-hw: df: /dev/mapper/vg00-var_lv 1074853 48619968890 5% /target/var Write changes. Error on console #4: "grub-installer: /boot is a lvm partition (dev/mapper/vg00-root_lv), cannot install grub". Lilo is given as an option in the installer menu. I choose to install to the MBR of /dev/md0, this pops up a nag box saying the partition is not marked active ("/dev/md/0 doesn't contain a valid partition table"). If I mark it active, lilo-installer fails with: sfdisk: ERROR: sector 0 does not have an msdos signature /dev/md/0 unrecognized partition sfdisk: 0 no such partition Not marking the partition as active makes the lilo-installer fail with an "error code 1" So I can't get a boot-loader onto this system. (Note that if I create another raid-1 container just for /boot, and leave /root and the others configured as LVM partitions on a separate raid container, the install works great, using grub this time). The 32MB install using 2.6 does work now, with the exception that an additional reboot is needed before the package installation is done. The additional reboot is needed because the normal reboot is stopped, showing these errors: Unable to handle NULL pointer dereference at initial address 000c <6>note: mount[187] exited with preempt_ count 1 After stopping at that error, and initiating another reboot, the install proceeds normally. I would be happy to provide any further information or testing that you request. Please note however, that the machine does have 48MB of RAM available, so I'm as happy as could be with the installer as is :). Just as additional trivia, the machine does seem to respond better (faster) to 2.6 than 2.4, which is a nice bonus. Sorry for not testing this sooner, I noticed you were doing some lowmem work and had intended to test prior to recieveing the bug closed report. -- Doug Jensen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I have never used grub before, I do not > see a config file, how do I tell grub now to write the MBR to sda? I did an install very similar to yours and had similar results, but with two IDE drives. When writing the MBR, I was thinking that just the one drive was plugged in, or that the new drive was the first. Have you had a chance to look at the grub-doc package? There are a couple of ways to get your SCSI drive booting and I think grub-doc will help you determine what to do. I've had good experiences when using grub, it's easy to have lots of booting options, once you get it setup the way you like. > I can not mount the CD-Rom. mount /cdrom can not find /cdrom. /media/cdrom > does not work either, /media/cdrom0 say the mount point does not exist. > /media/cdrom is a link to cdrom0, but this does not exist, which is what > gnome tells me when I try to mount the CD-Rom from gnome. Since you didn't quite have a sucessful install, I'm assuming that this part of your comment is referring to your original IDE drive (not the new sarge install). If that is the case, have you tried adding the /cdrom mount point back into your /etc/fstab? That's what I needed to do to get dselect working again, after my install that was similar to yours. -- Doug Jensen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". *2: After the installation and reboot, the two network adaptors were detected in the opposite order, so that the wired card (that was eth0 during install) was now eth1, and the wireless card (that was eth1 during install) was now eth0. This problem was easy to fix with appropriate entries in /etc/modules (so the drivers are forced to load in the proper order). Hmm, don't know if this is still present. Reassigned, too. Can you test this with Beta 4? Sorry, I can't re-test this problem. Hardware detection was certainly nice to have. *1: This system has two network adaptors, one wired and one wireless. Both were detected and had their drivers set up properly. In the installer screen, I chose the wrong device and had to start over to correct this mistake -- both adaptors were identified with the same text ("10/100 Ethernet" or something like that). Any one change out of the following list would have allowed me to continue the installation without that reboot: * in the list of network adaptors, further identify them (by MAC address and/or by which driver controls the adaptor) * detect what network adatptor has a link (via the mechanisms used in package 'ifplugd' or something similar) and default to that one * Once DHCP has failed to negotiate a lease, present the user with an opportunity to re-select which network adaptor to use * If the chosen device is a wireless adaptor, present the user with an opportunity to enter a WEP key *2: After the installation and reboot, the two network adaptors were detected in the opposite order, so that the wired card (that was eth0 during install) was now eth1, and the wireless card (that was eth1 during install) was now eth0. This problem was easy to fix with appropriate entries in /etc/modules (so the drivers are forced to load in the proper order). One other problem -- not sure if this belongs here or as a bug for base-config: upon selecting a mirror for apt, it went off and did its apt-get update magic, then prompted me once again for a mirror. Thinking it did not like the mirror I had chosen, I chose another. And another. Only upon manually editing my sources.list file was I allowed to proceed. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Apt finishes the other packages and lets me know about one package not being fully installed. Apt says somethign to the effect that I can try again if I would like or skip it knowing that a package is broken. I tried again, maybe it's my slow comp and installing a billion packages so I try again when it's just one package. It still fails and I had to switch to another terminal and kill it again. Once installation is complete, I did a dpkg-reconfigure wvdial which works just fine and doesn't get stuck, although the end result is it says no modem found. Bootp is a lot easier to get going using a dhcp server rather than a bootp server. Much better log messages. Or did you mean the SRM end? > > The bad news? Re: Alpha Boot Floppies: new version
I have used the boot floppy images from ftp://134.2.15.134/boot-floppies/disks-alpha/ to attempt an install from scratch on a Bret (AlphaStation 500/500). The good news? bootp/tftp boot works great! In SRM, you need to select bootp via console variable ('set ewa0_protocol bootp' or something like that) rather than via a flag to the boot command ('boot -proto bootp ewa0' does not work, failing with "Block FFF2 is not in any zone" messages). The bad news? The installation hangs during/right after installing the libc6.1 package. It hangs so solid that the shell on the second virtual console will not respond. I even tried floppies rather than tftp and it stops in the same location. Is this a known problem? Also, when trying to write aboot to the disk, it looks like the installer is trying to swriteboot to the partition where the root filesystem is (/dev/sda) rather than directly to /dev/sda . -Doug -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#96237: boot-floopies problem
Package: boot-floppies Version: 2.2.23 flavor:vanilla architecture: i386 model: Toshiba Tecra 510CDT (laptop) memory:148 megs scsi: none cd-rom:Toshiba XM-1502B (ATAPI compatible) network card: 3Com 3CCFE574BT (PCMCIA) pcmcia:The network card is the only PCMCIA device on this machine Immediately before the main menu appears, I see a whole bunch of messages that look like this: "modprob: modprob: Can't open dependencies file target/lib/modules/2.2.19pre17..." I'm trying to install over a network. At the "Select Installation Medium" screen, my network card does not appear in the list. Recognizing that I probably need to set up PCMCIA first, I select "Configure PCMCIA support" from the main menu. After answering all the questions, I receive the following error message: "An error encountered while trying to load and configure the PCMCIA modules" Very informative. At this point I am thoroughly confused. I select "Configure Device Driver Modules" from the main menu. After answering "yes" to the question, I receive the following error message: "Problem: No modules were found in /target/lib/modules/2.2.19pre17 that could be configured. Please install the modules first." I have some vague notion that the modprob errors I got at the beginning are somehow related to the absence of device driver modules on the root disk I downloaded. I tried downloading the root disk again, but the same thing happened. I have read the installation manual, but I couldn't find the answer to my problem. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
