Good news is that with anything I can build or test now, keyboard
switching works. Only beta2 stands out as not-working.
Only uneasy feeling left from that is that I cannot seem to figure out
why. Differences between Beta2 and current testing are minimal, but
enough so I can no longer reproduce problems with keyboard switching.

I want to do some more testing, but it looks like enabling the directfb
keyboard module is the way to go.

Commenting out the following line from /etc/directfbrc (after boot with
BOOT_DEBUG=3) makes the keys work again:
disable-module=keyboard

The reason that line was added is #395257, which is mainly about switching
keyboards not working. I have tested changing keymaps does work now
without disabling the keyboard module, so apparently the root cause of
that issue was in the kernel.

BUT...
Changing keymaps works fine when using udebs from 2008-03-25 and the .24
kernel, but is broken again when the keyboard module is not disabled for
D-I Lenny Beta 2 (essentially same kernel), which leads to the question
"what changed?". Was directfb later "fixed" for the kernel change maybe,
breaking things for us again?

Other info gathered along the way...

Dead keys still do not work, at least combining them doesn't.
If I select the Dutch keymap and press "'" (dead acute) followed by "e",
nothing happens.

Hmmm, hang on. It does kind of work.
' + space -> ´
' + ' -> ´
' + e -> nothing
' + ' + e -> ´é (i.e. gives accent _followed by_ accented character)

Very strange is that this does work:
' + s -> ś
' + c -> ć

I think I'll open a new bug report for this (later).

With the Dutch keymap alternate keys work too if I use the Windows key
as "shift", e.g. (all correct):
normal/shift/windows + 1: 1 ! ¹
normal/shift/windows + 2: 2 " ²
normal/shift/windows + 3: 3 # ³
normal/shift/windows + 4: 4 $ ¼
normal/shift/windows + 5: 5 % ½
normal/shift/windows + 6: 7 & ¾

Cheers,
FJP

I've just, with the help of snapshot.d.n, traced this regression to the
switch from the 2.6.22-3 kernel to the 2.6.24-1 kernel.

This can be easily reproduced by anyone by creating a
sources.list.udeb.local with the following line in it:
deb http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2008/03/25/debian sid main

And then building netboot-gtk images using both kernels by updating
config/i386.cfg (see below for minor additional changes needed). Udebs
for both kernels are available on that day, which also means there are
absolutely no other changes.

Although the direct cause is the switch to 2.6.24, I would think that the
actual problem is likely to be in directfb which apparently does not work
with whatever changed in the kernel.

I'll see if I can identify likely changes in the kernel, either the kernel
config or functionality.

Cheers,
FJP

OK. I have just confirmed the regression.
As VT2 is correct, it is unlikely that this is an issue in the keymap,
although that should be checked for changes.

Most likely the regression is in either cairo or directfb, but reassigning
to cdebconf until we can trace it more exactly.

It would be good if someone could confirm whether the same problem also
affects other languages that have similar keys.
I checked the Dutch keyboard and that is also affected: the ± and ˚ keys
(first gives +, second is dead).

I have just checked and Lenny Beta1 was still good.

No, this has nothing to do with dead keys or characters composed by
typing an accent and then the letter. The german umlauts öäüß are
own characters as oau. There are lower case and upper case forms of
them, while the upper case are created with the normal shift key.

In VT2 all keys work correctly.

And: I just tried with a 4.0r1 installation DVD: no problems, all
keys work correctly.

This is probably the same as #394871 which is listed in the errata and as an
open issue in the installation guide.

Are these symbols typed by typing the accent separately using a "deadkey" or
are they typed using a special "shift" key (alt-gr)?
Do the keys work correctly if you switch to a debug console (VT2) and use
them there?

Comments/Problems:

In graphical installer I chose
"Language - german"
"Location - Germany"
"Keyboard - german"
and the logs say, that keymap de_DE was loaded, but
umlauts did not work (äöü) and also the ß.
This all works fine in text mode installer.

Additionally "Shift" + "3" didn't worked correctly:
in graphical installer output was "3", in text mode
installer output was a blank space.

Feel free to ask for logs, if needed.

Kind regards
Holger
