Yeah, you're right. oldsys-preseed has the following comment about
this. I guess the question is whether the new localechooser deals
properly locale not being preseeded in this situation.

Should all work fine. Just drop the preseed.

Okay, I can select the language now. However, most text still stays
in English, although some things show up in the chosen language.

That must be because anna has already been run before localechooser and
thus unused translations have been deleted to save memory.

To keep translations you'll have to unset DEBCONF_DROP_TRANSLATIONS. See
src/lib/debian-installer/menu in rootskel.

Can you try with 2.6.26 from unstable?

Only possible problem during installation I hit was that I wasn't
able to choose Finnish as installation language. Maybe a feature of
this installation method, not a bug? At one point there was
possibility to choose language, I think - it asked for the
continent and country but then continued when I selected Finland
without giving a choice of language. After the installation, I ran
  dpkg-reconfigure locales manually.

Christian, can you comment on this? I always forget what the
implications of exluding localechooser from the initrd are.

Normally, when localechooser is added, you should then get the prompt
for language+country. Which is partly what Timo had, as he mentions
being prompted for continent+country.

(IIRC, this happens at a later step while in normal installs this
happens at the very beginning of course)

localechooser was quite deeply revamped during the etch-lenny
release cycle so it could be likely that, for some reason, the
language question is not askedwhich is probably not really
intended but just something not enough tested when localechooser was
modified.

I tried this a bit more now. I couldn't reproduce the hang anymore when
attaching an USB disk, only when using the eSATA connector. eSATA problems
could be easily addressed to the experimental sata support, but I don't
know why I had the same problem with USB before (I think I tried it two
or three times back then).

Anyway, the directory access problem is still there. I now checked with
both a 1TB disk and 300GB disk, and both had the same sort of problems:

d? ? ??? ? Ø - Metri
etc.

Is this a vfat filesystem?

All are ext3.

The HDD enclosure used is Icy Dock MB-664US-1S.

There are no implications other than that it is run later. The problem is
more likely that you are preseeding language?

Yeah, you're right. oldsys-preseed has the following comment about
this. I guess the question is whether the new localechooser deals
properly locale not being preseeded in this situation.

# localechooser yet needs a way to run after network-console;
# in the meantime, preseed this information. However, don't preseed
# countrychooser/country-name in order to force the installer to
# prompt the user for a country when configuring the clock. Note
# that for this method to work, localechooser must not be included
# in the installer image.
add $FILE debian-installer/locale string C

* Timo Jyrinki [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008-07-21 21:53]:
After installation I did encounter problems with using external disks:
 - System hang whenever either eSATA disk or USB disk was connected or
 disconnected

I'm away from my QNAP right now but I'll test this next week.
However, I believe this worked for me.

Can you reproduce this 100%? i.e. plugging in an USB disk will hang
the machine?

 - However, some directories were not accessible. All unaccessible
directories seemed to (at a casual look) have special characters in
their names, but many similar named directories worked without problems.
For example (from my FLACd CD collection):
 d? ? ??? ? Björk - Telegram
 d? ? ??? ? Ø - Metri
 etc.

Is this a vfat filesystem?
